A BMW M5 Touring can be factory-built as an M5 and later dressed or equipped as a police car. BMW’s own police-liveried G99 is exactly that: a show car based on a genuine current-generation M5 Touring, not proof that a production police-spec M5 Touring is in service. BMW says it could consider production if police authorities approved the vehicle and there were enough customer orders.
First, separate the car’s identity from its current equipment
“Factory M5 Touring” and “police conversion” describe different things. The first is the vehicle’s original model and build specification. The second describes police graphics, lights, communications equipment or other changes fitted afterward. A car can be both: a factory-built M5 Touring that was later converted, dressed for a show, or used in an official role.

That distinction matters because a police wrap and emergency lights show how a car is configured now; by themselves, they do not establish what BMW built. Conversely, the presence of police equipment does not mean the underlying vehicle is a regular 5 Series Touring. To identify an individual car, match its VIN to BMW factory vehicle data and compare that record with the car in front of you.

There is also a separate question: whether the vehicle is or was an authorized, operational police car. Its model identity and its service or legal status are not established by the same evidence. Do not assume either from its appearance.

Keep those questions separate when reading a listing or speaking with a seller. “It is an M5 Touring” is a claim about the base vehicle’s factory identity. “It was a police car” is a claim about its use or conversion history. “It is a police-spec car” may refer to later equipment, but the phrase alone does not establish that BMW built a special police model. Ask what the seller means and what records support each claim.
What BMW’s police-liveried G99 actually is
In an article dated 5 October 2026, BMW M describes its police-liveried G99 as a show car based on a genuine current-generation M5 Touring. BMW says the standard 5 Series police wrap did not fit the M5’s wider wheel arches and bumpers, so it had to be adapted. That account is direct evidence about this particular car, not a general description of every police conversion. BMW M’s account of the M5 Touring police show car.
BMW also identifies several choices that make the show car a creative interpretation rather than a fully equipped operational police vehicle:
- It has Merino Red/Black seats.
- The rear-door coat of arms contains a BMW emblem where the Bavarian state flag would appear.
- Its light bar is deliberately flatter, and BMW omitted a rear light-bar extension because of the boot’s different geometry.
- BMW says the car was not fully equipped for police work and had no weapons on board. Sascha Eifel, BMW M Head of Development Authority and Special Vehicle / Functional Safety, put it plainly: “Even though the vehicle certainly looks the part, there are no weapons on board.”
These details can help identify BMW’s show car if you are comparing it with photographs of that specific vehicle. They are not rules for authenticating all police cars. A different authority, conversion company or owner may choose different seats, insignia, lights or equipment.
BMW says German police wraps use blue, neon yellow and retro-reflective white. The show car uses those high-visibility materials in an adapted design. BMW also notes that sensor areas and their fields of view must remain clear when wraps are designed so they do not interfere with driver-assistance systems. A carefully fitted wrap may therefore demonstrate attention to the car’s design and sensors, but it still does not prove factory police origin.
BMW’s description also helps explain why a police-themed M5 can look convincing without representing a production service specification. The M5’s body differs enough from the regular 5 Series Touring that a standard police wrap required adjustment around the wider arches and bumpers. The flatter light bar and omitted rear extension address the Touring’s boot geometry. These are packaging and appearance decisions BMW reports for its show car; they are not a checklist of mandatory features for an operational vehicle.
BMW’s statement that it could consider producing a police version is conditional: police authorities would need to approve the vehicle, and there would need to be sufficient customer orders. That is not a claim that a production police version already exists, nor that a particular authority has ordered one. The show car’s existence should not be used to turn a future possibility into proof of current fleet use.

How to verify a specific M5 Touring
Use the VIN as the starting point. A badge, body part, interior detail or police accessory can be changed; a VIN-matched factory record is the strongest evidence of the original build. BMW notes that VIN locations vary by vehicle, market and equipment. Possible locations include a stamped location at the front of the vehicle, behind the windscreen and a type plate on a B-pillar. Confirm the correct identification points for the exact car and delivery market rather than relying on one label. BMW Group’s recall and technical-update information explains that vehicle identification is tied to the specific vehicle.
- Record the full VIN. Photograph or transcribe it from the vehicle’s identification points and compare it with the registration, title or other paperwork. If the numbers do not match, stop and resolve the discrepancy before relying on any specification claim.
- Ask a BMW-authorized retailer to check the factory record. Request the vehicle details and factory-installed options associated with that VIN. BMW technical training material describes dealer-system access to vehicle details and a complete list of factory-installed options; the access described is authorized and market-specific. BMW Technical Information System collision-repair training material.
- Compare the build record with the car as it sits. Check that the model and factory equipment in the record agree with the vehicle. Treat police lights, wraps, seats and other removable or replaceable items as evidence of its present configuration, not its original build.
- Ask for conversion and ownership documentation. If the seller says it was a police vehicle, request invoices, conversion records and vehicle-history documents that support that claim. These can explain later work, but they do not replace the factory record for establishing the original model.
- Arrange an independent inspection before purchase. A BMW specialist can compare the vehicle with its recorded build and inspect modifications, repairs and the condition of installed equipment. No single legal definition or universal inspection process for every country is established here, so confirm local requirements separately if police-service status affects registration, sale or use.
If a seller will not provide the VIN or allow a factory-record check, visual clues cannot fill that gap. For a purchase, treat the car’s original identity as unverified until the VIN-matched information is available.
What each check can tell you
The VIN check and the physical inspection answer related but different questions. The factory record can identify the model and options associated with the vehicle when built. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a later wrap or light bar was installed properly, whether those items remain on the car, or whether it served an authority. Conversely, a specialist’s inspection can document the present condition and visible modifications, but visual inspection alone cannot replace the factory data for establishing original identity.
Conversion invoices and history documents can help fill in the timeline after the original build. Check whether the documents identify the same vehicle and describe the work being claimed. A receipt for a light bar, for example, may support that equipment was installed; it does not show that BMW installed it at the factory or that the vehicle was used by police. The strength of the evidence depends on what the document actually records.

Body cues: an M5 Touring is wider and more specific than a regular 5 Series Touring
The G99 M5 Touring has flared wheel arches, model-specific side skirts, and M-specific front and rear aprons. BMW’s UK press kit says it is 75 mm wider at the front wheel arches and 48 mm wider at the rear than the standard 5 Series Touring. Those dimensions are useful when assessing whether the visible body configuration is consistent with an M5 Touring. They are not a substitute for checking the VIN: body components can be replaced, and photographs or viewing angles can make width difficult to judge. BMW Group PressClub UK, the all-new BMW M5 Touring.
Use these proportions as a plausibility check, not a shortcut to identification. A car that appears to have the M5’s arches and aprons is visually consistent with the model, but those parts do not independently establish the chassis’s original specification. Likewise, a police wrap may make the wheel-arch shape harder to see. The factory record remains the decisive route to confirming what the VIN identifies.

| What you are checking | Factory BMW M5 Touring | Police-liveried or converted car |
|---|---|---|
| Original identity | Established by VIN-matched BMW factory vehicle data. | May be an M5 Touring, a regular 5 Series Touring or another base vehicle; appearance alone cannot establish which. |
| Body specification | G99 M5-specific arches, skirts and front and rear aprons. | Police graphics and equipment may be added over the original body configuration. |
| Interior and details | Reflects the M5 Touring equipment recorded for that vehicle. | May include later changes or show-car choices. BMW’s show car, for example, has Merino Red/Black seats and a BMW emblem in place of a state flag. |
| Best supporting evidence | BMW factory specification or build data matched to the VIN. | Conversion records and vehicle history, considered alongside the original build data and an inspection. |
| Police-service status | Not determined by the model identity alone; it depends on the vehicle and jurisdiction. | A police appearance does not establish that it is an official or operational police vehicle. |
The table compares original vehicle identity with later equipment; it is not a guide to every police fleet’s livery. BMW’s account concerns its German show car and German livery conventions.
Which clues are useful—and which are not proof
Useful as consistency checks
- G99 M5 body details: the flared arches, model-specific skirts and M aprons are consistent with the factory M5 Touring body specification.
- BMW’s specific show-car details: the red-and-black seats, BMW rear-door emblem and flatter light bar can help distinguish the described show car from another vehicle when compared with BMW’s own account.
- A coherent VIN record: factory data that identifies the vehicle as an M5 Touring is the key evidence for its original model identity.
Not enough on their own
- Police graphics or reflective colors: they describe the current appearance and can be applied later.
- Emergency lights or a light bar: equipment can be installed, removed or replaced. BMW’s show car itself demonstrates that a genuine M5 Touring can receive police-themed equipment after it was built.
- M badges, trim or body panels: visible parts are not a VIN-matched factory record.
- Performance figures: the published output figures vary by market and do not authenticate an individual car. Use the factory record rather than an advertised number to establish its identity.
Even a number of matching visual cues add up only to a stronger consistency check. They do not become proof simply because they appear together: a well-finished conversion can combine the right body styling, police graphics and emergency equipment, while the underlying car could still be a different model. This is why the order of checks matters: establish the factory identity from the VIN, then use the car’s appearance and conversion records to understand what changed later.
Keep market-specific performance figures separate
Performance numbers sometimes appear in listings or discussions about the M5 Touring, but they are not provenance evidence. BMW’s UK press kit gives 727 hp and 1,000 Nm and marks its performance and technical figures provisional for its stated European-market offering. BMW’s US press material gives 717 hp and 738 lb-ft for the US-market car. These are separate market-specific figures, not values to combine or use as a visual authentication test.
| BMW source and market | Published figures | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| BMW Group PressClub United Kingdom | 727 hp; 1,000 Nm | 2024 press kit; figures marked provisional and stated for its European-market offering. UK press kit. |
| BMW Group PressClub USA | 717 hp; 738 lb-ft | 2024 US-market press material. US press release. |
Do not read the different units or numbers as a way to distinguish a police conversion from a factory car. The figures come from BMW’s separate UK and US press materials and refer to their stated markets. Even if a listing repeats one of those outputs accurately, it tells you about a published market specification, not whether the particular VIN left the factory as an M5 Touring or what happened to it afterward.
What the evidence can and cannot establish
BMW’s description establishes what BMW says about its own police-liveried show car: it began with a genuine M5 Touring, received an adapted wrap and show-car details, and was not fully equipped for police work. It does not establish that every car advertised as a police conversion has the same origin, equipment or service history.
No frequency figure is established here for factory-built M5 Touring police vehicles or for conversions, and there is no universal visual feature that authenticates every police vehicle. For an individual car, the defensible conclusion comes from combining the VIN-matched BMW factory record with the vehicle’s current condition and any later conversion documentation.
BMW’s account is a first-party description of its own show car, rather than an independent inspection of other vehicles advertised as conversions. It supports the details BMW gives for that G99 and its conditional comments about possible production. It does not supply a fleet count, a universal standard for police conversions, or a method for certifying service history across countries. Where those points matter, ask for the records specific to the individual car and relevant authority.

Frequently asked questions
Does BMW’s police-liveried M5 Touring prove that a factory police version is already in service?
No. BMW describes the G99 as a show car based on a genuine current-generation M5 Touring. BMW says it could consider production if police authorities approved the vehicle and there were sufficient customer orders. That conditional statement is not evidence of an existing production police specification or a particular authority’s fleet order.
Can police lights or a reflective wrap prove that a car is an M5 Touring?
No. Lights and graphics show the car’s current configuration, and they can be added later. Confirm the original model with BMW factory vehicle data matched to the VIN. Police equipment, conversion paperwork and vehicle history may help explain later changes, but none of them alone replaces that factory identity check.

How do I confirm the factory options on a specific car?
Record the full VIN and ask a BMW-authorized retailer to check the vehicle details and factory-installed options associated with it. BMW technical training material describes dealer-system access to those details, but the access is authorized and market-specific. Compare the resulting record with the actual car and its paperwork.
Are the red-and-black seats and flatter light bar standard clues for all police M5 Tourings?
No. BMW identifies those features on its own show car: it has Merino Red/Black seats, a deliberately flatter light bar and no rear light-bar extension because of the boot geometry. BMW also says its rear-door coat of arms uses a BMW emblem where the Bavarian state flag would appear. These details may help identify that show car, but they are not universal requirements for police conversions.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A police wrap, light bar or badge cannot establish what BMW built. Match the full VIN to BMW factory vehicle data to confirm whether the car began as an M5 Touring, then use conversion records, vehicle history and an inspection to assess later equipment and claimed service use. BMW’s police-liveried G99 is a genuine M5 Touring show car, not proof of an existing production police specification.
