Use your car’s own fuel changeover switch, then check the instrument cluster to confirm which fuel is active. The switch’s location, modes and behavior depend on the make, model, year, market and CNG system. Many factory-fitted CNG cars start on petrol and change to CNG automatically after warm-up; do not assume that a switch position or blinking indicator means the change is complete.
Before you change fuel, identify your car’s system
There is no universal button sequence for switching between petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG). First establish the car’s exact make, model, model year and market, and whether its CNG system was factory-fitted or installed as an approved conversion. Then consult the matching owner’s manual and, if supplied separately, the CNG supplement. A control that looks similar in another car may have different modes or behavior.

Find the manual’s instructions for the fuel selector, changeover switch or CNG system. Manufacturers place controls in different locations: the cited Hyundai Exter manual puts its switch on the driver-side crash pad, while the Volvo V70 manual describes a switch by the center console. These are examples, not locations to assume for another vehicle. Hyundai Exter owner manual (2026); Volvo V70 support page (2016 model; updated 2023).
Check that the manual applies to the car’s market and CNG installation, not just its nameplate. The examples in this guide come from different vehicles and editions: Hyundai’s Exter CNG manual is from 2026; Maruti Suzuki’s WagonR CNG supplement is approximately 2019; the Volvo page covers the 2016 V70 and was updated in 2023; and the XL6 CNG manual is approximately 2025. They show why one vehicle’s instructions cannot safely be treated as another vehicle’s instructions.

Read the active-fuel indicator
Use the cluster or fuel indicator described in your manual to verify the result. A selected mode, a switch light or a blinking indicator may show that a change has been requested or is in progress rather than confirming that the engine is already using that fuel. Indicator colors and meanings vary: the cited Volvo V70 page uses green for vehicle gas and orange for petrol. Do not apply that color convention to another car.
Look for the manual’s definition of each status rather than relying on color alone. The selector’s current position tells you what mode has been selected; the vehicle’s indicator is what the manual says to use to understand whether the fuel change has completed or whether the system is signaling a problem. If a light blinks or the status remains unclear, avoid repeated presses and consult the relevant instructions.
Keep petrol in the tank
Some CNG cars start on petrol before changing to gas, and petrol may also be needed if the CNG supply runs out. Keep enough petrol for your vehicle’s specified operation. The Maruti Suzuki XL6 CNG manual warns that insufficient petrol can contribute to stalling during automatic changeover from CNG to petrol. Its instructions are model-specific, but they illustrate why a CNG vehicle should not be treated as if petrol were unnecessary.

- Check the correct manual. Confirm that it applies to your car’s model year, market and CNG installation. Read the section describing the fuel selector and the meanings of its modes and indicators.
- Locate and identify the labeled control. Depending on the car, it may be on the dashboard, crash pad or center console. Do not press an unfamiliar switch based only on its appearance.
- Select the mode your manual describes. Some vehicles offer petrol and CNG selections; others also have an automatic mode. Use the control once as directed. Do not assume every car supports a manual change to CNG or offers a forced-CNG mode.
- Allow for the system’s changeover conditions. The engine may need to warm up, and the change may take time. Do not repeatedly toggle the switch while waiting unless the manual specifically tells you to do so.
- Confirm the active fuel on the instrument cluster. Wait for the indicator to show that the change is complete. If it does not settle as expected, follow the manual’s troubleshooting guidance instead of repeatedly trying the switch.
Make a selection when you can safely pay attention to the vehicle and its indicators. If you are unsure what the selected mode means, stop somewhere safe before consulting the manual rather than trying unfamiliar controls while driving. Do not use an accelerator press as a generic way to speed up changeover: Maruti Suzuki’s WagonR CNG supplementary manual specifically says not to press the accelerator pedal to change from petrol to CNG.
After selecting a mode, give the system the time and conditions the manual specifies. A changeover may depend on temperature or engine speed, and the switch may not instantly change what fuel is being used. Pressing several times can leave the driver uncertain about what has been requested and does not make the system’s transition immediate. Hyundai Motor India’s 2026 Exter manual states: “Do not press the fuel changeover switch several times as the changeover does not take place immediately.” That is an Exter instruction, but it reinforces the need to avoid guessing at a sequence for another vehicle.
What the modes mean—and why they differ
Mode names are not standardized across all dual-fuel cars. In particular, “Auto” does not necessarily mean that the driver can switch instantly between fuels, and “Forced CNG” is not a universal feature. Follow the definitions in the manual for your vehicle. If the control offers multiple positions, establish what each one does before selecting it; the label alone may not explain startup behavior or the conditions for changeover.
Petrol mode
On the cited WagonR CNG system, Petrol mode runs the car on petrol. A petrol selection may be useful when the manual calls for it, but its purpose and operation should be checked in the relevant manual for your own car. The existence of a Petrol mode on one system does not establish that all CNG cars use the same selector arrangement or allow the same choices.

Automatic mode
In the WagonR supplementary manual, Auto mode starts the engine on petrol and changes to CNG after a programmed warm-up condition is met. A driver may therefore select Auto without seeing an immediate change to gas. Hyundai’s Exter manual likewise describes starting on petrol when there is enough petrol and the petrol system is working normally, with the later change depending on coolant temperature and engine speed.
Cold conditions can also affect a system’s transition. The WagonR manual says that below-zero ambient or engine temperature may prevent automatic changeover until the engine warms. The Volvo V70 support page gives a different example: its car starts on petrol even when gas is selected, normally changing to gas within a few seconds after a warm start, while a cold engine can take longer. These are not competing universal rules; they are descriptions for different models.
Forced CNG mode
The WagonR supplementary manual and Hyundai Exter manual describe selectable behavior beyond an ordinary petrol-to-CNG automatic change, but their instructions are not interchangeable. In the cited Hyundai Exter manual, holding the switch for more than five seconds forces CNG mode. That is a model-specific instruction, not a general method to try in another car. The WagonR manual also describes Forced CNG as a separate mode, but recommends starting in Auto or Petrol mode. Do not choose a forced mode routinely or copy another model’s button timing.
In other words, “forced” does not mean “the normal way to switch.” It is a mode described for particular systems, with its own rules. If your manual does not identify a forced mode or tell you how and when to use it, do not try a long press or a repeated-button sequence based on instructions for a different CNG vehicle.
How the changeover works in specific cars
These examples show why the manual matters. They concern particular manuals and markets, not a universal sequence for all petrol-and-CNG cars. Compare the models by selector location and action, available modes, startup fuel, changeover conditions and delay, indicator behavior, response when CNG runs out, and warning or service instructions.
| Vehicle and manual | Control and modes | Startup and changeover | Indicator or warning guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai Exter CNG, 2026 manual | Changeover switch on the driver-side crash pad; CNG and Petrol modes are described. | The system starts on petrol when there is enough petrol and the petrol system works normally. Changeover depends on coolant temperature and engine speed and may take up to 60 seconds. Holding the switch for more than five seconds forces CNG mode. | Do not press the switch repeatedly; changeover is not immediate. Hyundai Exter owner manual. |
| Maruti Suzuki WagonR CNG, supplementary manual, approximately 2019 | Dashboard selector with Petrol, Auto and Forced CNG modes. | Auto starts on petrol and changes to CNG after a programmed warm-up condition. Below-zero ambient or engine temperature may delay automatic changeover until the engine warms. | The manual says not to press the accelerator pedal to change from petrol to CNG and recommends starting in Auto or Petrol mode. WagonR CNG supplementary owner’s manual. |
| Volvo V70 Bi-Fuel, 2016 model support page | Switch by the center console; the page describes changing between gas and petrol. | The car starts on petrol even if gas is selected. After a warm start it normally changes to gas within a few seconds; a cold engine can take longer. | Green indicates vehicle gas and orange indicates petrol on this model. A warning lamp and/or repeated acoustic signals mean service is needed. Volvo V70 support page. |
| Maruti Suzuki XL6 CNG, approximately 2025 manual | The manual describes automatic change from CNG to petrol when the CNG supply runs out while the engine is running. | The driver should keep sufficient petrol available to prevent stalling during automatic changeover. | If a CNG malfunction warning remains after the manual’s acknowledgment procedure, the manual directs the driver to an authorized Maruti Suzuki workshop. XL6 CNG owner’s manual. |
The Hyundai figure of up to 60 seconds applies to the Exter instructions and depends on coolant temperature and engine speed; it is not a general CNG changeover time. The Volvo’s “within a few seconds” description is also specific to its warm-start behavior. Neither number predicts how quickly a different vehicle will change fuels. The correct comparison is not simply which car switches fastest: startup fuel, temperature conditions, selector choices and warning behavior all affect what a driver should expect.
If the car does not switch to CNG
A delay alone does not establish a fault. First check whether your model changes fuel automatically, what conditions must be met and what its indicator should show. Then work through the manual’s troubleshooting instructions for that system. The starting question is whether the car is behaving as designed—not whether a different model would already have switched.

It is still running on petrol after startup
This may be normal if the car is designed to start on petrol and change over only after warming up. Check the manual for the required conditions and allow the system to complete its automatic changeover. The WagonR manual notes that below-zero ambient or engine temperature may prevent the automatic change until the engine warms; the Hyundai Exter manual says coolant temperature and engine speed affect the time needed. The Volvo V70 also starts on petrol even if gas has been selected, with cold starts taking longer to change over than warm starts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the conditions described for your own car, including any petrol requirement. The Hyundai Exter instructions describe petrol startup when there is enough petrol and the petrol system is working normally. Do not assume that selecting CNG overrides a vehicle’s startup sequence, or that an absence of immediate changeover means the selector is broken.
The indicator is blinking or the fuel status is unclear
Do not treat a blinking lamp or switch position as proof that CNG is active. Use the indicator definitions in the correct manual to determine whether the system is changing over, has completed the change or is reporting a problem. If you cannot tell which fuel is active, avoid repeated switch presses and consult the vehicle’s instructions. The Volvo’s green-for-gas and orange-for-petrol convention is specific to that V70 page; it is not a color key for other dashboards.
The switch appears unresponsive
Some systems do not change fuel immediately, and repeated pressing can make it harder to understand what the system is doing. Hyundai explicitly warns against pressing its Exter switch several times because changeover does not happen immediately. Maruti Suzuki explicitly instructs WagonR drivers not to press the accelerator pedal to change from petrol to CNG. Follow the instructions for your model rather than using the accelerator or rapid switch presses as a workaround.
Also check what the selector actually requests. A driver may have chosen an automatic mode whose system waits for warm-up conditions, rather than a mode that changes fuel at once. The WagonR and Exter examples both include conditions that can delay a transition. If the manual describes a status light or another indicator, use that information to tell a pending change from a fault.
A warning remains or changeover repeatedly fails
Use the manual’s warning and troubleshooting section. If a malfunction warning persists after any acknowledgment procedure described there, or the system repeatedly fails to change as specified, arrange service through the manufacturer’s authorized workshop where the manual directs you. The XL6 manual gives that instruction for a CNG malfunction warning that remains after its acknowledgment procedure; Volvo’s V70 guidance says a warning lamp and/or repeated acoustic signals mean the car needs servicing. Do not try to diagnose a CNG fault by borrowing another model’s changeover procedure.
If the CNG supply runs out
Do not assume every dual-fuel car handles an empty CNG supply the same way. The Maruti Suzuki XL6 CNG manual says its vehicle automatically changes from CNG to petrol if CNG runs out while the engine is running. It also recommends keeping sufficient petrol to prevent stalling during that transition. Consult your own manual for the expected response, and do not rely on the XL6 behavior as a promise about another model or conversion.

This is another reason to keep petrol in the tank even when CNG is your usual fuel. In the cited XL6 instructions, the warning is specifically about avoiding a stall during automatic changeover when the CNG supply runs out. The manual does not establish a universal reserve quantity, so use the guidance for your vehicle rather than applying an invented figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Instructions to avoid copying from another car
- Do not assume a selector’s location, button sequence, indicator color or mode names are shared across makes.
- Do not repeatedly press the changeover switch while waiting for a delayed transition unless your manual specifically directs you.
- Do not press the accelerator to trigger petrol-to-CNG changeover when the manual prohibits it, as the WagonR manual does.
- Do not assume that selecting CNG means the engine is already using gas; confirm the completed change using the cluster indicator.
- Do not assume that a factory-fitted CNG instruction applies to an approved conversion. Use the conversion system’s vehicle-specific documentation and service guidance.
- Do not assume all systems start on petrol, have automatic changeover, include a forced-CNG mode or automatically revert to petrol when gas runs out.
- Do not ignore persistent malfunction warnings or repeated signals; use the manual’s escalation instructions and authorized service route.
Which manual to use
Use the manual edition that matches the vehicle and its CNG installation, not merely a page for the same brand. The examples above come from distinct markets and model years: a 2026 Hyundai Exter manual, a WagonR CNG supplementary manual identified as approximately 2019, an XL6 CNG manual identified as approximately 2025, and a UK support page for the 2016 Volvo V70 updated in 2023. Their controls and procedures should not be combined into one universal sequence.
If the car has an approved aftermarket conversion, look for documentation covering the installed CNG system as well as the vehicle’s owner manual. If those instructions do not explain the changeover, or a warning persists, seek guidance from the conversion provider or the vehicle’s authorized workshop rather than experimenting with a switch sequence. A replacement selector or CNG component also needs to match the particular vehicle and system; the examples here do not identify a compatible part for an unspecified car.
Frequently asked questions
How do I switch from petrol to CNG?
Use the fuel selector or changeover switch specified in your vehicle’s manual, select the appropriate mode as directed, allow for any startup or warm-up conditions, and confirm the active fuel using the cluster indicator. There is no button sequence that applies to every dual-fuel car.
Does a CNG car always start on petrol?
No universal rule is established across all CNG vehicles. The cited WagonR and Hyundai Exter manuals describe petrol startup followed by changeover under programmed or temperature-related conditions. Volvo’s V70 also starts on petrol even when gas is selected. Check the instructions for your exact vehicle and installation.
How long does it take to change from petrol to CNG?
There is no shared duration. Hyundai’s 2026 Exter manual says its changeover can take up to 60 seconds depending on coolant temperature and engine speed. Volvo’s V70 page says a warm-start change usually happens within a few seconds, while a cold engine can take longer. These model-specific times should not be applied to other cars.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I press the accelerator or keep pressing the switch?
Do not use either as a general workaround. The WagonR CNG manual says not to press the accelerator pedal to change from petrol to CNG, and Hyundai warns Exter drivers not to press the changeover switch several times because the transition is not immediate. Follow your own manual’s instructions.

Can I force my car to run on CNG?
Only if the vehicle’s manual describes that mode and gives instructions for it. The Exter manual says holding its switch for more than five seconds forces CNG mode; that is specific to the Exter. The WagonR manual has a separate Forced CNG mode and recommends starting in Auto or Petrol mode. Do not copy either procedure for another vehicle.
What happens when the CNG tank runs out?
Behavior varies. The XL6 CNG manual says that vehicle automatically changes to petrol if CNG runs out while the engine is running and recommends keeping sufficient petrol to prevent stalling during the transition. Check your own manual rather than assuming another car will respond the same way.
When should I take the car for service?
Follow the warnings and troubleshooting steps in the car’s manual. Volvo’s V70 guidance says a warning lamp and/or repeated acoustic signals mean the car needs servicing and recommends an authorized Volvo workshop. The XL6 manual directs drivers to an authorized Maruti Suzuki workshop if its CNG malfunction warning remains after the stated acknowledgment procedure.
