If Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) makes a move you do not expect or cannot confirm is safe, take control immediately. Keep your eyes on traffic, steer as needed, and use the brake or another listed vehicle control to disengage. Do not wait for a warning chime or a “Take over immediately” message: Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as requiring an attentive driver who is ready to act at all times.
What to do in the first seconds
The safest response is a driving response, not a software diagnosis. Look through the windshield, identify the actual conflict, and control the vehicle before trying to understand why FSD chose that path. The following sequence reflects the detailed controls in the U.S. Model 3 owner’s manual; controls and behavior can differ on another Tesla, in another market, or after a software update.

- Keep your attention on the road. Check lane position, nearby vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, traffic signals, road edges and the space you need to stop or steer. Do not look down at the touchscreen to investigate while the vehicle is moving.
- Take control as soon as the maneuver is unsafe, unclear or simply not the course you want. Steer manually and, if necessary, press the brake pedal or use the right steering-wheel scroll button. Tesla’s Model 3 manual says that when driver intervention is required, it is best to safely disengage as soon as possible.
- Do not rely on the turn signal to cancel an active maneuver. A signal may communicate your intention, but the manual says it may not stop a turn or lane change already under way. Use the steering wheel or another vehicle control to intervene.
- React immediately to an explicit takeover alert. If the screen says “Take over immediately,” take over steering immediately. The message is accompanied by a warning chime when the system is unable to steer.
- Stabilize the situation under manual control. Once you are safely controlling the car, verify on the driver display whether FSD or Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is still active. Do not assume every assistance function has switched off merely because you moved the wheel.
This is a practical response sequence, not a promise that every Tesla behaves identically. Your vehicle’s current owner’s manual takes precedence for the model, region, hardware and software installed in your car.

FSD (Supervised) is not an approval system that certifies an intersection, gap, turn or lane change as safe. Tesla instructs the driver to watch road conditions and surrounding traffic and to be ready for immediate action, with particular care around blind corners, intersections and narrow driving situations. If you can see that the vehicle’s planned path is wrong, waiting for the car to announce a problem gives you less time and distance to respond.

An alert is therefore a demand for immediate action, not a prerequisite for action. You may need to intervene when the vehicle is creeping toward a blocked lane, entering a confusing intersection, positioning too close to a curb, approaching a road user that the system has not handled correctly, or beginning a maneuver that is technically possible but unsafe in the real traffic situation.
Keep both the driving task and your escape options in mind. If a safe stop is available, braking may be the quickest way to create time. If stopping would create a hazard, controlled steering may be appropriate. The correct input depends on traffic, road geometry and available space; no single button sequence can replace that judgment.
Which vehicle controls disengage FSD?
The U.S. Model 3 manual reviewed for this guidance lists three direct ways to disengage Full Self-Driving: pressing the brake pedal, pressing the right steering-wheel scroll button, or steering manually. Treat these as Model 3 manual instructions rather than a universal control map for every Tesla.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Control | What it is used for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Brake pedal | Immediately slows the vehicle and is listed as a disengagement control. | Brake as traffic and road conditions require; avoid an abrupt stop if it would create a secondary danger. |
| Right steering-wheel scroll button | Listed in the Model 3 manual as a way to disengage FSD. | Button functions and hardware can vary by model, market, manufacture date and software version. |
| Manual steering | Taking the wheel and steering yourself disengages FSD according to the cited Model 3 instructions. | Keep control of the vehicle; a steering input may not leave all cruise assistance off. |
| Turn signal | Communicates an intended turn or lane change. | Do not treat it as a cancellation command for a maneuver already in progress. Intervene with steering or another vehicle control. |
Use the control that best manages the immediate hazard. Do not reach for a button or touchscreen if doing so would take your eyes or hands away from a developing traffic conflict.
How to respond to “Take over immediately”
When the vehicle displays “Take over immediately,” Tesla’s manual says to take over steering immediately. The warning appears with a chime when the system is unable to steer. Put the vehicle under your control first; investigate the message only after the traffic situation is stable.

FSD can also disengage when certain events occur, including an automatic emergency-braking event, an opened door or trunk, a released seat belt or the driver leaving the seat, driver inattention, or system unavailability. If the system becomes unavailable, Tesla says an alert appears and a chime sounds; take control of steering immediately.
Tesla describes a further fallback if a driver ignores repeated attention warnings and does not resume manual steering: the vehicle sounds a continuous chime, activates the hazard flashers and safely pulls over. That fallback is not a reason to delay taking over. It may occur later than the moment when you need to avoid a hazard, and it does not replace an attentive driver.
Does turning on the signal cancel a lane change or turn?
Not reliably. The Model 3 manual specifically warns that a turn signal may not stop a turn or lane change that is already under way. If the maneuver is wrong, unsafe or no longer appropriate, steer manually or use another listed vehicle control to disengage.
If the car has only just begun to move laterally
Check the adjacent lane and blind spot while keeping the vehicle in a controllable path. Apply a deliberate steering correction rather than relying on the signal stalk to reverse the maneuver. Brake if slowing is the safer way to create space.
If the vehicle is entering an intersection
Prioritize avoiding conflicting traffic and pedestrians. A signal does not give the vehicle right of way and does not make an uncertain gap safe. Take over steering and braking as needed, then complete only a maneuver you can verify yourself.

For the Model 3 procedure documented here, press the brake, press the right steering-wheel scroll button, or steer manually. Use the control that lets you handle the immediate traffic situation safely. Tesla’s wording favors disengaging as soon as possible when intervention is required, rather than continuing to let the system make decisions while you search menus.
After the vehicle is stable, look at the driver display and controls to confirm what is active. Steering may disengage FSD while leaving another assistance feature engaged on some configurations. The display is the reliable indication for your car at that moment; do not infer the status solely from the fact that the steering wheel is back in your hands.
Does cruise control stay on after you take over?
A 2024 Tesla manual document surfaced in search results says that manually steering to disengage FSD leaves Traffic-Aware Cruise Control active. That behavior is a qualified, model-specific lead rather than a rule for every Tesla or current software release. The underlying document was not independently verified here, and Tesla states that operation can vary with model, market, manufacture date, configuration, self-driving hardware and software version.
Accordingly, check the driver display immediately after taking over. If speed control remains active and you do not want it, disengage it using the control shown for your vehicle. Continue to supervise speed and following distance either way; taking over steering does not mean the vehicle has stopped assisting with acceleration or braking.

What to do in common unexpected-move situations
Unexpected lane change
- Check the lane the vehicle is entering and the lane you can safely occupy.
- Steer to maintain a safe path; do not assume the signal will cancel the move.
- Use the brake if reducing speed is necessary to avoid a conflict.
- Once stable, confirm on the display whether FSD and any cruise function remain active.
Uncertain turn at an intersection
- Take over before crossing a stop line or entering conflicting traffic if the intended route is unclear.
- Judge the signal, signs, pedestrians, cyclists and approaching vehicles yourself.
- Do not let the vehicle’s willingness to proceed stand in for your decision that the movement is safe.
Blind corner or narrow passage
- Reduce speed and prepare to stop if the sight line is limited.
- Keep the vehicle centered in a path that leaves clearance from parked cars, curbs and oncoming traffic.
- Be ready to use steering and brake controls immediately; Tesla specifically identifies blind corners and narrow driving situations as places requiring heightened attention.
Approach to a stopped object or blocked lane
- Do not wait for FSD to choose a detour if the path ahead is not clearly safe.
- Brake early enough to preserve stopping distance.
- Only steer around the obstruction after checking the adjacent space and yielding as required.
System suddenly becomes unavailable
- Respond to the alert and chime by taking over steering immediately.
- Keep braking and speed control under your direct supervision.
- Continue manually until you have deliberately decided whether any assistance can be re-enabled.
What may disengage FSD automatically
The Model 3 manual lists several events that can disengage FSD without the driver choosing a control:
- Automatic emergency braking.
- An opened door or trunk.
- A released seat belt or the driver leaving the seat.
- Driver inattention.
- System unavailability.
Automatic disengagement is not evidence that the preceding maneuver was safe. If the system drops out, keep steering and speed under control and respond to any alert immediately.
How to practice taking over
Tesla recommends becoming familiar with disengaging in a safe environment without other road users. Choose a place where you can concentrate on the controls and where a brief practice intervention will not expose pedestrians, cyclists or other drivers to risk. Follow local laws and your vehicle manual.
- Before moving, identify the brake pedal, steering-wheel controls and the display indicators for FSD and cruise assistance.
- With the vehicle in a controlled, legal setting, practice returning to manual steering without looking away from the road.
- Practice a smooth brake application appropriate to the available space, rather than rehearsing an emergency maneuver in traffic.
- After each intervention, look at the display only when the vehicle is stable and confirm which assistance features remain active.
- Repeat the exercise after a major software update or when driving a different Tesla, because controls and behavior can change.
Do not use practice as a reason to test the system around other road users. The purpose is to remove hesitation about the controls, not to provoke an unexpected maneuver.

Tesla states that feature availability and operation may differ by market, date of manufacture, vehicle configuration, options, self-driving hardware and software version. The company also evolves features through over-the-air updates. A control shown in a U.S. Model 3 manual may not have the same effect in another model or in a later release.

| Vehicle model | Steering-wheel layouts, buttons and disengagement behavior may differ. |
| Market or region | Availability and permitted operation can vary by jurisdiction. |
| Manufacture date and options | Hardware and installed options can affect which functions are available. |
| Self-driving hardware | Different hardware generations may support different feature behavior. |
| Software and manual version | Over-the-air updates can change operation, warnings or residual cruise behavior. |
Use your own vehicle’s current owner’s manual for the definitive control instructions. Keep the manual available before a trip, but never read it on the touchscreen while driving.
How this fits the broader automation picture
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes today’s highest level of consumer driving automation as requiring full driver engagement and undivided attention. Its description of Level 2 assistance includes steering and acceleration/braking support while the driver remains fully engaged and attentive.
That framework explains why “supervised” is a safety requirement, not a comfort label. The system can assist with parts of the driving task, but you remain responsible for observing the roadway, recognizing an unsafe choice and taking control without waiting for the vehicle to ask.
After you are safely stopped
Once you have pulled over or reached a safe destination, write down what you remember while the sequence is fresh: road type, weather, traffic, the maneuver you observed, any warning, and which control you used. Do not attempt to reconstruct an event by interacting with the vehicle while moving.
The sources used for these control instructions do not establish a single current Tesla procedure for reporting an unsafe FSD maneuver or preserving vehicle logs. For follow-up, use Tesla’s current owner-support materials and the instructions applicable to your vehicle after you are safely stopped. Avoid assuming that a procedure described for another model or software version will preserve the same information.
Essential takeaways
- Stay attentive and ready to take over throughout every FSD (Supervised) drive.
- Intervene when the maneuver is unsafe or uncertain; do not wait for an alert.
- For the cited Model 3 instructions, brake, press the right scroll button or steer manually to disengage.
- A turn signal does not reliably cancel a turn or lane change already under way.
- After taking over, check the display because another assistance function, including Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, may remain active on some configurations.
- Use the current manual for your exact model, region, hardware and software.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I wait for a chime before taking over FSD?
No. Take over as soon as the maneuver is unsafe, unclear or inappropriate. A chime and the “Take over immediately” message require immediate action, but an alert is not a prerequisite for intervention.
Can I cancel an FSD lane change by switching on the turn signal?
Do not rely on the signal to cancel a maneuver already under way. Intervene with steering or another vehicle control, using the road situation to decide whether braking is also needed.
Will steering manually always turn off every driving-assistance feature?
Not necessarily. A 2024 manual excerpt describes Traffic-Aware Cruise Control remaining active after manual steering disengages FSD, but that behavior is not verified for every model or software version. Check your driver display and current manual.
