How to Switch From Conventional to Synthetic Motor Oil Safely

A safe conventional-to-synthetic switch needs no flush or break-in. Follow the owner’s manual, install a new filter, verify the level after 5–10 minutes, and shorten the first intervals on high-mileage or poorly maintained engines.

Yes. You can normally change from conventional motor oil to a full synthetic or synthetic-blend oil at your next scheduled oil change, provided the new oil has the SAE viscosity and API or vehicle-manufacturer specification required by your owner’s manual. No engine flush or special break-in procedure is needed.

Drain the old oil, replace the filter, add the specified synthetic oil, run the engine briefly, shut it off, wait 5–10 minutes, and verify the level. Keep the interval in the manual: synthetic oil does not automatically authorize longer service intervals. High-mileage or poorly maintained engines may benefit from one or two shorter initial intervals so deposits are removed gradually.

When switching is safe

ExxonMobil says conventional, synthetic-blend and full-synthetic motor oils are compatible, so moving to full synthetic at a normal oil change is acceptable. AAA gives the same practical guidance: a vehicle designed for conventional oil can use a full synthetic or synthetic blend when the oil meets the required viscosity and specification.

The decisive checks are printed in the owner’s manual, not the word “synthetic” on the bottle:

  • SAE viscosity: Use the exact grade listed for your engine and operating conditions.
  • API specification: Choose an oil carrying the performance category required by the manual.
  • Vehicle-manufacturer approval: If the manual calls for a specific OEM specification, the bottle must meet it.
  • Capacity: Add the amount specified for your engine and verify the dipstick or electronic oil-level reading after the change.
  • Service interval: Continue to follow the manufacturer’s time or mileage interval unless the manufacturer itself specifies otherwise.

A synthetic label by itself cannot compensate for the wrong viscosity or specification. Conversely, an oil that meets the required grade and approval can be used even if its formulation differs from the oil previously installed.

What the compatibility guidance means

Switching does not require the engine to be empty of every molecule of the old oil. A normal drain leaves a small amount in galleries and other passages, and that residual oil is compatible with the new formulation. The filter change removes the old filter’s captured contaminants and gives the new oil a clean filtering element.

“Engine flushing is not required.” — ExxonMobil guidance on changing from conventional to synthetic oil

AAA similarly states that cars calling for conventional oil can switch to full synthetic or synthetic blend “without issue” when the required viscosity and specification are met.

What to check before buying the oil

Read the maintenance section of the owner’s manual before purchasing anything. Manuals can list different grades for temperature ranges, engines, or service conditions, and they can specify an API category or an OEM approval in addition to the SAE grade.

Check Why it matters Where to confirm it
SAE viscosity The oil must flow and protect as required by the engine design and the temperatures covered by the manual. Owner’s manual and the oil container’s viscosity marking
API category The performance standard must match the engine’s requirement. Owner’s manual and API designation on the container
OEM specification Some vehicles require a manufacturer-specific approval in addition to an API category. Owner’s manual and approval statement on the container
Fill capacity Too little oil risks inadequate lubrication; too much can also be harmful. Owner’s manual
Change interval Synthetic oil does not automatically extend the permitted time or mileage. Owner’s manual, maintenance schedule or service reminder instructions

Buy a replacement filter that fits the vehicle and have a drain pan, wrench, and a way to measure the final level. Select the formulation—full synthetic or synthetic blend—only after the required grade and specification are confirmed.

Step-by-step: the normal switch at an oil change

  1. Confirm the manual’s requirements. Write down the SAE viscosity, API category, any OEM approval, the fill capacity, and the prescribed interval. Do not substitute a grade simply because it is advertised as synthetic.
  2. Drain the old oil completely. Follow the vehicle’s normal oil-change procedure and collect the used oil for proper recycling. There is no need to add a flushing chemical or perform a separate flush.
  3. Remove the old filter. The documented Mobil procedure is to drain the old oil, remove the old filter, install new motor oil, and install a new filter. Replacing the filter is part of the switch rather than an optional extra.
  4. Install the replacement filter. Use a filter compatible with the vehicle and fit it according to the filter and vehicle instructions.
  5. Add the full-synthetic or synthetic-blend oil. Pour in the manual’s specified grade and begin with the stated capacity. Avoid guessing from the amount drained; the correct fill is the amount and level specified for the engine.
  6. Run the engine briefly. This circulates the new oil through the engine and fills the replacement filter.
  7. Shut the engine off and wait 5–10 minutes. The pause lets oil drain back to the pan so the level can be checked consistently.
  8. Recheck the level. Use the dipstick or the vehicle’s specified electronic check procedure. Add small amounts of the same oil if needed, stopping at the indicated full mark rather than overfilling.
  9. Record the change. Note the date, mileage, oil grade and specification, and the next interval. The interval remains the one in the manual unless the manufacturer provides a different schedule.

This is the same basic process whether the old oil was conventional and the new oil is a blend or full synthetic. The change in formulation does not create a required break-in mileage or special driving routine.

Do you need an engine flush?

No. ExxonMobil’s published guidance specifically says an engine flush is not required when changing from conventional to synthetic. A standard drain, new filter and correct refill are sufficient for a normally maintained engine.

Skipping a flush does not mean skipping the drain. Let the old oil leave the crankcase, replace the filter, and verify the final level. A flush is a separate procedure; it is not a prerequisite for synthetic oil and should not be added merely because the formulation changed.

Can conventional and synthetic oil be mixed?

Generally, yes, if the mixed oil has the correct SAE grade for the vehicle. AAA says mixing brands or oil types is usually safe, but recommends using one type, brand and grade whenever possible because mixing can reduce the performance advantage expected from a synthetic formulation.

Situation Appropriate action
Planned oil change Drain the old oil, replace the filter and refill with one oil that meets the manual’s viscosity and specification.
Small amount of residual conventional oil after draining Proceed with the synthetic refill; a normal drain does not require a flush to remove every trace.
Emergency low-level condition Add a compatible oil of the correct SAE grade rather than driving with dangerously low oil. Return to a single specified oil at the next service.
Different brand but same required grade and specification Mixing is generally safe, although AAA recommends one brand and type when practical.
Vehicle that requires synthetic oil Do not change it to conventional oil. Continue using an oil that meets the required synthetic and specification requirements.

Mixing is a compatibility fallback, not a performance strategy. If the level is safe, there is no reason to combine products intentionally; use one correct oil at the scheduled change.

Switching a high-mileage or poorly maintained engine

A high-mileage engine can use synthetic when the oil meets the manual’s requirements. However, Mobil recommends a more cautious first interval for an engine that has never used synthetic or has been poorly maintained. Its guidance is to shorten one or two initial intervals so deposits are cleaned gradually.

For an engine whose normal interval is 5,000 miles, Mobil’s example is:

  1. Run the first synthetic fill for 2,500 miles.
  2. Change the oil and run the second fill for 3,500 miles.
  3. After that, return to the normal 5,000-mile interval if the vehicle’s maintenance schedule calls for it.

The figures are an example for a 5,000-mile schedule, not a universal interval. If your manual specifies a different interval, use that schedule and apply any shortened plan conservatively. The purpose of the shorter changes is gradual deposit removal, not a required synthetic-oil break-in.

Keep the filter replacement and level check at every change. If the engine has a history of neglected maintenance, use the maintenance records and the manual to decide the interval rather than assuming that synthetic oil alone resets the engine’s condition.

Conventional, synthetic blend or full synthetic?

The first decision is compliance: all three choices must meet the required SAE viscosity and API or OEM specification. After that, operating conditions, deposit and oxidation resistance, and cost can guide the choice.

Decision factor What the available evidence supports
Specification compliance Use whichever formulation meets the vehicle’s required viscosity and API/OEM specification. A vehicle that requires synthetic should not be changed to conventional.
Cold starts and extreme temperatures AAA’s 2017 testing included cold-temperature pumpability and related properties; the tested synthetic oils performed better on average than the tested conventional oils. The result does not guarantee the same outcome for every brand, vehicle or condition.
Deposits and oxidation AAA’s 2017 program tested deposit formation and oxidation resistance and reported better average synthetic performance across the tested oils. These are test results, not a promise for every formulation.
Service interval The owner’s manual still controls the interval. A synthetic label does not, by itself, permit longer use.
Cost AAA reported an average switching premium of $64 per year, or $5.33 per month, in its 2017 analysis.

AAA reported 47% average better performance for synthetic oil across eight industry-standard tests in 2017. The tests covered deposit formation, volatility, oxidation resistance, cold-temperature pumpability and related properties. The result describes the oils and test conditions evaluated; it is not a guarantee that every synthetic oil will deliver a 47% improvement in every engine.

Cost and interval expectations

Expect full synthetic to cost more than conventional oil. AAA’s 2017 estimate put the average additional cost at $64 per year, equivalent to $5.33 per month. That is an average switching premium from that analysis, not a current quote for a particular vehicle, retailer or oil grade.

Do not justify a longer interval solely with the higher price or the synthetic label. Follow the owner’s manual’s time and mileage limits, including any severe-service schedule. If the manual calls for 5,000 miles, switching oils does not change that number unless the vehicle manufacturer says it does.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most defensible way to compare annual cost is to use the vehicle’s required capacity, the prices available for the required grade, the number of changes specified by the manual, and the cost of a compatible filter at each service. Those inputs vary by vehicle and region, while the $64 figure is AAA’s 2017 average.

Checks after the first synthetic fill

  • Level check: Recheck after the engine has run briefly and rested for 5–10 minutes. Correct the level in small additions if necessary.
  • Specification check: Confirm that the container’s SAE, API and OEM information matches the manual before the next change.
  • Filter check: Verify that a new, compatible filter was installed at the switch.
  • Interval check: Put the manual’s next due date or mileage in your maintenance record; do not adopt a longer interval automatically.
  • Top-up plan: If the level becomes dangerously low before the next service, add a compatible oil with the correct grade rather than operating with too little oil. Use one specified product for routine service afterward.

These checks address the practical risks of the change: an incorrect specification, an incorrect level, a missed filter replacement or an interval that was extended without authorization.

A simple decision guide

Choose full synthetic now when

  • The manual permits or requires synthetic oil.
  • The bottle matches the required SAE viscosity and API/OEM specification.
  • You want the formulation that performed better on average in AAA’s 2017 tests, accepting the additional cost reported in that analysis.

Choose a synthetic blend when

  • The manual allows it and the blend meets the same required viscosity and specification.
  • You want a formulation between conventional and full synthetic while keeping compliance with the manual.

Stay with conventional when

  • The manual allows conventional oil and there is no specific reason to change formulation.
  • You prefer the lower purchase cost, while still meeting the exact viscosity, specification and interval requirements.

None of these choices removes the need for the correct grade, a new filter, a verified level and the manufacturer’s service schedule.

Bottom line

Switching from conventional to synthetic motor oil is normally a routine, safe oil change: use the manual’s SAE viscosity and API/OEM specification, drain the old oil, replace the filter, refill, run the engine briefly, wait 5–10 minutes and recheck the level. Do not flush the engine or extend the interval automatically. For a high-mileage or poorly maintained engine, use one or two shortened initial intervals—such as Mobil’s 2,500-mile and 3,500-mile example for a normal 5,000-mile schedule—before returning to the manual’s regular interval.
