1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA Ford Bronco-to-Coyote V8 conversion is a systems-engineering project, not a universal bolt-in kit. First identify the Bronco generation, transfer case, intended use and jurisdiction; then select a specific Coyote donor and transmission as a matched pair. Only after those decisions should you buy a control pack, mounts, headers or fabrication parts.
Why a Coyote swap depends on the Bronco generation
“Ford Bronco” can mean several substantially different chassis generations. A 1966–1977 early Bronco has different frame, steering, engine-bay and drivetrain constraints from a later full-size Bronco. Parts advertised for one range cannot be assumed to fit another. The strongest specialist coverage in the available material is for 1966–1977 trucks: T&D Motion advertises a Coyote engine/transmission installation package for that range, and TOM’S Offroad lists Coyote-specific mounts and headers for early Broncos. Those offerings establish a year-bounded opportunity, not an all-generation recipe.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Some retailer categories use a broad “1966–1996 Bronco conversion parts” label. A category heading is not proof that every component fits every year in that span. Treat the exact chassis, engine, transmission and transfer-case combination as the fitment definition.
Define the project before buying parts
Write down the following information for the actual truck. This record prevents an attractive control pack or engine listing from driving incompatible decisions.

- Bronco identity: model year, generation, wheelbase and whether the chassis is stock, modified or heavily rust-repaired.
- Four-wheel-drive hardware: transfer-case model, front and rear axle assemblies, driveshaft layout and available tunnel space.
- Current powertrain: engine, transmission, clutch or torque-converter arrangement, transmission crossmember and shifter location.
- Steering and suspension: steering-box position, linkage, front-axle travel, oil-pan clearance and the intended ride height.
- Intended use: street registration, trail use, competition, towing or mixed driving. This affects cooling, gearing, noise, emissions and service priorities.
- Registration location: country, state or province and the vehicle’s model-year rules. A control pack that runs an engine is not automatically legal for public-road use.
Photograph and measure the engine bay, steering shaft, front axle, firewall, transmission tunnel and transfer-case position before dismantling anything. The available sources do not provide universal clearance dimensions, so your measurements and the component maker’s confirmation are the authority for a specific build.
Choose the Coyote engine and transmission together
Do not choose a control pack from displacement alone. Ford’s applications are bounded by engine year, engine origin, transmission type and, in some cases, transmission model. Record the donor year, Coyote generation, Mustang or F-150 origin, transmission model and whether the engine still has its original sensors, throttle hardware and accessories.
| Ford component path | Stated application | What it addresses | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| M-6017-M50A control pack | Specified 2015–2017 Coyote automatic engines with a 6R80 Mustang GT transmission | Ford PCM/calibration, harness, electronic throttle hardware and diagnostic functions for the stated application | Compatibility with another engine year, an F-150 engine, a different transmission or a Bronco transfer-case interface |
| M-6017-M50B control pack | 2018–2023 Mustang Coyote manual engines | Controls for the stated manual Mustang engine application | 2018-and-newer F-150 engines; the pack is explicitly excluded for those engines |
| M-12000-M50 upfit kit | 2015–2017 Gen 2 Coyote engines being installed with a manual transmission | Pilot bearing assembly, flywheel, bolts and engine harness listed by Ford’s 2020 catalog | A complete Bronco conversion, automatic-transmission control, transfer-case adaptation or chassis fabrication |
These examples show why the donor, transmission and controls must be evaluated as one package. A 2018–2023 Mustang manual engine and a 2015–2017 automatic engine are not interchangeable control-pack choices simply because both are 5.0-liter Coyotes. Likewise, an F-150-origin engine can require a different electrical and accessory strategy than a Mustang-origin engine.
Manual-transmission planning
For a manual build, establish the exact Coyote generation and bellhousing pattern, then confirm the clutch, flywheel, pilot-bearing depth, starter position, hydraulic-release arrangement and transmission tunnel clearance. Ford’s M-12000-M50 listing is an upfit path for 2015–2017 Gen 2 engines; it is not a complete Bronco kit. You still have to solve the transmission crossmember, transfer-case mating, shifter, driveshafts and clutch-pedal installation.
Automatic-transmission planning
Ford’s M-6017-M50A example names the 6R80 Mustang GT automatic and specified 2015–2017 Coyote engines. If your donor uses another automatic, confirm the transmission controller, output-shaft arrangement, bellhousing, flexplate, torque converter and transfer-case adapter before purchase. Do not assume that a control pack designed to run the engine will command a different transmission.
Understand what the control electronics include
A Coyote control pack is a major subsystem, not merely a bundle of wires. Ford describes relevant packs with a PCM and calibration, a custom-build engine harness, an electronic throttle pedal and diagnostic capability; the exact contents vary by pack. Ford’s marketing copy says, “Take the complexity and mystery out of wiring a late model 5.0L Coyote engine!” That is a description of the product’s purpose, not evidence that every Bronco wiring or integration problem disappears.

Before ordering, compare the pack’s included items with the donor engine. Verify crank and cam sensors, oxygen-sensor strategy, mass-air or manifold-pressure hardware, electronic throttle body and pedal, fuel-system controls, cooling-fan outputs, alternator wiring, starter circuit, data-link connector and calibration requirements. Ask the supplier whether the harness expects an automatic-transmission module, vehicle-speed input, clutch switch or other signals that your Bronco does not currently have.

Plan a protected location for the PCM, a serviceable route for the engine harness and a clean grounding scheme between battery, engine, frame and body. Keep diagnostic access reachable after the dashboard and glove box are assembled. Label every connector during mock-up; late-model Coyote troubleshooting becomes much harder when the harness is shortened before the final engine position is known.
Inventory the chassis systems that must change
Engine mounts and oil-pan clearance
The mounts must position the crankshaft, oil pan, exhaust outlets and accessory drive without compromising steering, front-axle travel or hood clearance. Early-Bronco-specific Coyote mounts are listed by TOM’S Offroad, but the cited material does not establish their fitment on later Broncos or provide universal dimensions. Confirm the exact mount part number, engine generation and transmission combination.
Check the oil pan against the front differential, crossmember and steering linkage at full suspension compression and steering lock. A static measurement at ride height is insufficient. Mock the engine with the springs or bump stops compressed and cycle the steering before final welding.
Headers and exhaust
Coyote-specific headers for 1966–1977 Broncos are described in the 2024 TOM’S Offroad catalog. Header fit is still dependent on engine position, steering type, frame modifications and transmission choice. Plan the complete exhaust route: collector clearance, oxygen-sensor locations, catalytic-converter requirements where applicable, heat shielding, muffler placement, service access and driveshaft interference. Do not cut the frame or steering components to force a header into place without engineering review.
Cooling and air management
The radiator, fan, shroud, upper and lower hoses, thermostat housing, expansion tank and heater connections must be designed around the selected Coyote and its final position. Check hood and grille clearance with the intake installed, not just with a bare long block. A mechanical fan may conflict with the radiator or front crossmember; an electric-fan plan needs adequate current capacity, relays, fusing and PCM control strategy. The available sources do not provide a universal radiator size or airflow specification, so size the system from the donor engine requirements and the Bronco’s intended use.

Fuel delivery
Confirm whether the engine and calibration require a return-style or returnless fuel system, the pump module’s pressure and flow, line diameter, regulator location and tank compatibility. Route lines away from headers and driveshafts, use abrasion protection and provide a serviceable filter arrangement. A carburetor-era tank and mechanical-pump plumbing should not be connected to a modern Coyote without a complete, pressure-controlled fuel plan.
Transmission, transfer case and driveshafts
The Ford control-pack examples do not solve the Bronco transfer-case interface. Measure the transmission output, transfer-case input, adapter length, crossmember position and front/rear driveshaft angles. A different transmission length can move the transfer case enough to require new shafts, floor surgery or altered exhaust routing. Verify shifter location, transmission mount strength, parking-brake access and underbody clearance at full axle articulation.
Check axle gearing against the chosen transmission’s ratios and tire diameter, but do not invent a “correct” ratio without the actual use case. Trail crawling, highway cruising and towing impose different priorities. Confirm that the axles, brakes and driveshaft joints are suitable for the torque and vehicle weight you intend to use.

Throttle, gauges and vehicle wiring
An electronic Coyote throttle requires the matching pedal and a safe, rigid pedal mount. Do not retain a cable pedal unless the chosen engine and throttle body are specifically designed for it. Integrate ignition power, starter control, fuel-pump control, cooling-fan commands, brake-switch input, clutch or neutral-safety logic and diagnostic access.
Decide how the Bronco’s gauges will receive oil-pressure, coolant-temperature, tachometer, speed and charging information. The donor PCM may use signal types unlike the original instruments. Use compatible senders or signal converters and retain warning-light functions that matter for safe operation.
Early-Bronco packages: useful starting points, not universal answers
T&D Motion installation package
T&D Motion advertises a Coyote engine/transmission installation package for 1966–1977 Broncos. Treat that year range as a hard boundary until the company confirms otherwise. Ask for the current contents in writing: mounts, transmission support, transfer-case adapter, headers, oil-pan solution, wiring or control electronics, hardware and any required donor restrictions. The listing demonstrates that a specialist package exists; it does not independently validate performance, legal emissions status or fitment on a different Bronco generation.

TOM’S Offroad mounts and headers
The 2024 catalog describes Coyote-specific mounts and headers for 1966–1977 Broncos. Verify current part numbers, engine-generation assumptions, steering clearance, transmission pairing and whether additional exhaust or oil-pan parts are required. Do not infer that an early-Bronco mount or header fits a 1978–1996 truck merely because a retailer uses a broad category label.

Road legality and emissions planning
Ford warns that installing certain control packs in a vehicle driven on public roads may violate emissions-related laws and regulations in the United States and Canada. That warning is not a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal ruling. Eligibility depends on the Bronco’s model year, registration location, engine configuration, emissions equipment, inspection program and how the vehicle is classified.
Check with the relevant state, provincial or national authority before buying the donor or calibration. Ask specifically whether an engine change is allowed, which emissions components must remain, whether catalytic converters and evaporative controls are required, how the vehicle is tested and what documentation an inspector needs. Keep donor identification, receipts, calibration information and component certificates with the project. A truck that runs correctly can still fail registration if its configuration is not accepted.

Assuming an early-Bronco part fits a later Bronco
Symptom: mounts or headers place the engine into the steering, axle or firewall. Prevention: treat 1966–1977 listings as year-bounded and obtain confirmation for the exact chassis before cutting or welding.
Leaving the transfer case until the end
Symptom: the engine and transmission fit, but the transfer case, shifter or driveshafts do not. Prevention: mock the complete powertrain, including adapter and transfer case, before finalizing mount locations.
Ignoring service access
Symptom: routine sensor, filter or spark-plug work requires removing the intake, exhaust or body panels. Prevention: install the actual accessories and plan tool clearance during mock-up.
Treating “starts” as “finished”
Symptom: the engine runs but overheats, loses diagnostic communication, has unsafe throttle behavior or fails inspection. Prevention: test cooling, fuel pressure, throttle fail-safe operation, charging, brake performance, emissions equipment and road legality as separate acceptance gates.
Three planning paths
1966–1977 manual Bronco
Start with a complete Coyote and manual transmission, then evaluate the M-12000-M50 path if the engine is a 2015–2017 Gen 2 unit. Pair the early-Bronco mounts and headers with a transmission crossmember, transfer-case adaptation, clutch hydraulics, driveshafts, cooling, fuel and a complete control strategy. Confirm every part against the exact steering and axle arrangement.
1966–1977 automatic Bronco
For a specified 2015–2017 Coyote automatic engine and 6R80 Mustang GT transmission, the M-6017-M50A application is the relevant Ford example. It still leaves the Bronco-side transfer case, crossmember, shifter, driveshafts, cooling and chassis integration to the builder. Verify that the chosen package supports the transmission controls and that the early-Bronco installation parts match the final engine position.
Later Bronco generation
Do not transfer the early-Bronco package assumptions to a later truck. Re-measure the engine bay, steering, front axle, firewall and tunnel; confirm mount and header availability for that generation; and obtain a control-pack solution for the selected donor and transmission. If a supplier cannot state the chassis and engine combination in writing, treat fitment as unproven and plan a custom design.

Acceptance checklist before the first road drive
- Engine and transmission identification matches the control-pack application.
- PCM, harness, throttle pedal, sensors and diagnostic connector are installed as specified.
- Throttle returns safely with the pedal released, and clutch or neutral-safety logic prevents unintended starting.
- Fuel lines, tank, pump and regulator have been leak-tested and protected from heat and abrasion.
- Cooling system is filled, purged and verified under load with functioning fan control.
- Oil pan, headers, steering, front axle, driveshafts and exhaust clear through full suspension and steering movement.
- Brakes, steering, tires, lights, charging system and parking brake meet the vehicle’s safety requirements.
- Emissions equipment and inspection documents match the registration jurisdiction.
- Transfer-case engagement, shifter positions, reverse lights and speed-signal behavior have been checked.
- Diagnostic communication is available for fault-code retrieval after the interior is installed.
Bottom line
A successful Coyote Bronco swap begins with a defined chassis and a matched engine-transmission-control package. Early Broncos from 1966–1977 have documented specialist mounts, headers and an advertised installation package, while later generations require separate fitment proof. Treat electronics, transfer-case adaptation, fabrication, cooling, fuel, safety and emissions compliance as equal parts of the conversion, and mock up the complete powertrain before committing to permanent cuts or welds.
