Store water and shelf-stable food in sealed, secured containers that stay shaded and are inspected regularly. Treat medicines differently: keep them in their pharmacy-labeled original containers, protected from heat, moisture, sunlight, freezing, and unknown temperature exposure. Carry the medicine pouch indoors whenever the car is parked. Refrigerated medicines need a temporary cooler-and-ice plan that follows the product label; a cooler is not a substitute for labeled storage.
A practical starting point is FEMA’s three-day planning baseline: one gallon of water per person per day and a three-day supply of nonperishable food. Adjust that amount for the people, pets, medical needs, climate, route, and likely delay represented by your vehicle. The American Red Cross and CDC also include food, water, first-aid supplies, and necessary medications in vehicle emergency kits.

What belongs in the kit, and what should not stay in the car
Build the kit around three separate storage zones rather than one mixed box:
- Water zone: commercially sealed bottles or durable, leak-resistant containers inside a rigid tote.
- Food zone: compact, ready-to-eat, nonperishable food in sealed packaging, with a manual can opener if you carry cans.
- Medicine zone: a removable pouch containing only the medicines appropriate for the people who may use them, plus a current medication list and dosage information.
Water and shelf-stable food can remain in the vehicle as part of a regularly maintained kit. Medicines should normally travel with you into the building or home after every trip. A parked vehicle can become too hot, too cold, or wet for medication storage, even when the weather outside feels moderate. MedlinePlus states: “Do not keep medicines in the glove compartment of your car. Medicines can get too hot, cold, or wet there.” The CDC similarly tells clinicians to advise patients not to leave medications in a car or another place that can become excessively hot.

Keep the three zones physically separated. A leaking bottle should not soak medication labels, and food should not share a compartment with cleaners, fuel products, or sharp tools. Use a rigid, lidded tote or a secured trunk-side compartment so the kit cannot roll forward, become a collision projectile, or block access to the spare tire and other safety equipment.
How much water and food to plan for
Use the federal baseline as a starting calculation
FEMA’s Preparing for Disaster guidance recommends a three-day supply of water at one gallon per person per day and a three-day supply of nonperishable food. That is a household planning baseline, not a promise that every vehicle, passenger, or emergency will require exactly that amount. It also does not account for the space, payload, or carrying ability of a particular car.
To calculate a starting quantity, multiply the number of people who may rely on the car by three gallons. Then consider whether the vehicle routinely carries children, older adults, a person with a medical condition, or pets. A long rural route, a severe-weather season, or a commute where help may be delayed can justify carrying more. If the full amount cannot be carried safely, prioritize sealed drinking water, make the quantity explicit on the kit label, and review the plan when the route or occupants change.

Do not confuse emergency water with drinking convenience
Carry water intended for drinking, not an unmarked container of uncertain origin. Commercially sealed bottles provide a visible seal and date information. Durable reusable containers can work when they are designed to be leak-resistant, clean, and suitable for drinking water. Put either option in a rigid tote that limits rolling, puncture, and crushing.
How to store water in a car
Choose containers that survive movement
Select bottles or containers with intact seals, sturdy closures, and shapes that pack tightly. Avoid a loose bottle rolling under a brake pedal or shifting into the passenger compartment. The tote should have a lid or fastening method that keeps the contents together during abrupt braking. Do not stack heavy tools on top of thin bottles or place containers where they can be punctured by a jack, shovel, or other equipment.
Limit heat, sunlight, and freezing exposure
Place the water kit in a shaded, secured location such as a trunk-side compartment. Shade does not make a parked vehicle temperature-controlled, so inspect the containers rather than assuming they are protected. Keep water away from direct sunlight, especially through windows or a hatchback’s glass.

Freezing can expand water and split a container. In cold weather, check for cracked seals, bulges, or leaks before relying on the supply. If a bottle has frozen and thawed, inspect the closure and surrounding packaging; replace anything damaged or contaminated. Do not let leaking water sit against first-aid materials, electrical equipment, or medication packaging.

Inspect and rotate the supply
At least monthly, check every seal, cap, container wall, and tote. Look for leaks, swelling, odor, cloudiness, punctures, or other damage. Replace questionable containers rather than trying to salvage them. FEMA advises reviewing disaster supplies at least once a year or whenever family needs change. Use that annual review to rotate water according to the manufacturer’s date guidance and to confirm that the quantity still matches the people and routes represented by the kit.
How to store food that can tolerate a vehicle kit
Choose food that needs no cooking or refrigeration
The most useful car-kit foods are compact, sealed, ready to eat, and safe without a refrigerator, stove, or much added water. Examples identified in Red Cross and FEMA checklists include:
- Energy bars
- Trail mix
- Peanut butter
- Crackers
- Canned foods
- Canned juices
Carry a manual can opener for any can that does not have a reliable pull tab. Select foods that the intended users can actually eat: account for allergies, diabetes, swallowing difficulties, dental needs, religious restrictions, and age-appropriate textures. A food that is technically nonperishable but cannot be opened or tolerated is not a useful emergency serving.
Pack food to prevent damage and contamination
Keep packages sealed in a waterproof tote, separate from chemicals, fuel products, and tools. Use the original package so ingredients, allergen information, and dates remain visible. Organize the tote so heavier cans do not crush bars or pouches. Remove anything with a swollen can, leaking seal, mold, unusual odor, torn packaging, or a date that has passed under your rotation policy. Heat can accelerate quality loss even when a package remains sealed, so replace food that shows damage or deterioration rather than relying only on a printed date.
What lasts in a hot car?
No ordinary food should be treated as permanently safe in an extremely hot parked car. Choose shelf-stable products, keep them shaded, and rotate them. During a heat event, the Red Cross advises keeping an ice-filled cooler stocked with food, water, and medicine so they do not spoil. For a vehicle kit, interpret that as a temporary transport or active-emergency measure, not permission to leave perishable food or medicines in a cooler indefinitely. Ice melts, temperatures change, and the product label still controls safe storage.

How to store medicines in a car emergency kit
Use original labeled containers
Leave each medicine in its pharmacy-labeled original container. The label identifies the medicine, strength, directions, expiration information, and dispensing details that a responder or pharmacist may need. Do not combine different medicines in one bottle, even if doing so saves space. Keep a current medication list and dosage information in the removable pouch, and update it whenever a prescription, dose, or person’s needs change.
Carry only medicines that fit the intended users
Include medicines appropriate for the people who may use the kit, rather than collecting a general assortment. Consider regular prescriptions, rescue medicines, and other items a clinician has instructed the person to keep available. Keep controlled substances and other high-risk medicines under the person’s normal security and legal requirements. The emergency pouch is not a place to store unidentified tablets or old prescriptions.
Remove the pouch from the vehicle
Store the medicine portion in a clearly marked pouch that can be lifted out in seconds. Take it indoors whenever the vehicle is parked for an extended period, during work or shopping stops, and before a heat wave or winter storm. This routine avoids guessing how hot or cold the vehicle became. It also lets you inspect labels, expiration dates, and physical condition in a controlled environment.

FDA consumer guidance says medicines should be kept in a cool, dry place away from bright light, and that travelers should keep them out of heat and direct sunlight in their original containers. Do not store the pouch in a glove compartment, on a dashboard, in a door pocket, or under a windshield where sunlight can heat it. Keep it away from drink spills, condensation, wet clothing, and car-wash water.
Do not use a medicine that is expired, visibly altered, wet, damaged, or exposed to an unknown temperature excursion. Ask a pharmacist or the manufacturer whether a questionable supply can still be used and whether it must be replaced. There is no universal number of hours that ordinary medicines can safely remain in a parked car; the answer depends on the product and its labeled limits.
Refrigerated and temperature-sensitive medicines need a separate plan
Identify the labeled temperature range before an emergency
Insulin, certain liquid antibiotics, and other medicines may require refrigeration or a specified temperature range. Read the product label and patient instructions before placing anything in the car kit. Record the manufacturer’s storage directions with the medication list so another person can follow them during a stressful roadside delay.

Use a cooler only for temporary transport
FDA guidance says that when refrigeration is temporarily unavailable, have a cooler and ice or frozen gel packs available if needed, and follow the medicine’s labeled storage instructions. Pack the medicine in a way that maintains the required range without allowing direct contact with freezing ice packs when the product must not freeze. A cooler is a transport aid; it does not provide an automatic safe temperature, and it does not override the label.

Before travel, precondition the cooler as directed by the product instructions, use enough ice or frozen gel packs for the expected journey, and monitor the situation as far as the label and available equipment permit. Keep the cooler out of direct sun and open it only when necessary. Do not permanently store refrigerated medicine in a parked car.
What to do after a temperature excursion
If the medicine became hotter, colder, frozen, wet, or otherwise outside its labeled range, quarantine it instead of relying on appearance. Contact a pharmacist, clinician, or manufacturer before using it. Ask what evidence they need, such as the medicine name, strength, lot information, approximate time, and the highest or lowest temperature known. Replace the medicine if the responsible professional cannot confirm that it remains suitable.
Where to place the kit in the vehicle
Choose a location that balances shade, restraint, and access. A trunk-side compartment or another fixed cargo area is generally preferable to a loose bag in the passenger area. Secure the tote so it cannot slide during braking or cornering, but do not bury it beneath heavy luggage that would delay access. Keep a clear path to the first-aid supplies and water.
Do not use the glove compartment for medicines. Do not leave the medication pouch in the car simply because it is inside a second bag. Do not place the kit next to a heater outlet, engine-bay heat source, window with direct sun, or a wet floor. In a sedan, check that the trunk does not trap excessive heat; if the location becomes unsuitable, bring the food and water inside for inspection and take the medicines with you.
Build the kit in a repeatable sequence
- List the users and likely delays. Record the people, pets, medical needs, allergies, dietary restrictions, regular routes, and weather conditions the kit must cover.
- Set the starting quantities. Use FEMA’s three-day food and water baseline, then adjust for occupants and practical vehicle capacity.
- Pack water. Use sealed bottles or leak-resistant containers in a rigid tote. Check closures and prevent rolling or puncture.
- Pack food. Choose ready-to-eat, nonperishable items such as energy bars, trail mix, peanut butter, crackers, canned foods, and canned juices. Add a manual can opener for cans.
- Prepare the medicine pouch. Keep each medicine in its original labeled container. Add the medication list, dosage information, and any product-specific storage instructions.
- Separate the zones. Keep food away from chemicals and tools, and keep medicines in the removable pouch rather than the permanent vehicle load.
- Secure the kit. Place it in a shaded, accessible cargo location where containers cannot become projectiles.
- Label the inspection date. Mark the outside of the tote with the next monthly check and the annual review date.
- Test removal. Practice taking out the medicine pouch and first-aid supplies without unloading the entire vehicle.
- Review before severe weather. Before a heat wave or winter storm, remove medicines, verify their labels, and refresh food and water.
Maintenance schedule for a reliable kit
| When | Check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | Water seals, food packages, tote, cooler, and first-aid contents | Replace leaks, damage, contamination, or missing items; confirm the kit is accessible. |
| At least annually | Dates, quantities, household members, routes, and medical needs | Replace expired or damaged supplies and revise quantities. FEMA calls for an annual or needs-based review. |
| Before a heat wave | Medicine location, food condition, water containers, and shade | Remove medicines from the vehicle and refresh any supplies affected by heat. |
| Before a winter storm | Food and water condition, freezing risk, and medicine labels | Check supplies as CDC advises and keep medicines within their labeled limits. |
| After heat, freezing, flooding, or wetting | Any medicine or package exposed to the event | Quarantine affected medicine and ask a pharmacist or manufacturer whether replacement is required. |

| Storage solution | Temperature protection | Portability | Leak and impact protection | Capacity | Medicine suitability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rigid lidded tote | Provides shade and separation but does not control temperature. | Good when equipped with handles. | Better resistance to crushing and rolling than a loose bag. | Available in small to large sizes; choose one that fits the vehicle securely. | Suitable for carrying the removable medicine pouch, not for leaving temperature-sensitive medicine in the car. |
| Soft insulated bag | Slows temperature change for a limited period; it is not refrigeration. | Very portable. | Limited puncture and crush protection unless placed inside a tote. | Usually compact. | Only when the medicine label and transport plan allow it; do not assume insulation makes storage safe. |
| Cooler with ice or frozen gel packs | Temporary cooling when packed and monitored according to the product label. | Portable but heavier and dependent on ice or charged packs. | Good container protection; melted ice can create moisture. | Varies widely. | Useful for temporary transport of refrigerated medicines, never a waiver of the labeled temperature range. |
| Original pharmacy containers inside a removable pouch | Depends on the surrounding environment; the pouch itself is not climate control. | Excellent; designed to leave the vehicle with you. | Protects labels and organizes doses when kept dry and closed. | Limited to the medicines needed by the intended users. | Best routine approach for ordinary medicines because it supports inspection and indoor storage. |
Common failure modes and the fix
Leaving the medicine pouch in the glove compartment
Why it fails: the compartment can become too hot, cold, or wet. Fix: keep the pouch removable and carry it indoors after each trip.
Assuming a cooler makes every medicine safe
Why it fails: coolers warm as ice melts and can freeze products that must not be frozen. Fix: follow the exact label, use ice or gel packs only as directed, and ask a pharmacist or manufacturer after any excursion.
Using loose bottles or cans
Why it fails: they can roll, leak, puncture, or become projectiles. Fix: use a rigid tote with a lid and compartments or packing that keeps items fixed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPacking food that requires cooking or refrigeration
Why it fails: a stranded vehicle may have no safe cooking method, water, or power. Fix: choose ready-to-eat, nonperishable foods and include a manual can opener for cans.
Keeping supplies until they are visibly spoiled
Why it fails: damaged packaging, unknown temperature exposure, or an expired medicine may not be safe merely because it looks normal. Fix: inspect monthly, review at least annually, and replace questionable items.
Forgetting seasonal checks
Why it fails: heat waves and winter storms create different risks. Fix: remove medicines and refresh food and water before severe weather, then inspect again afterward.
Quick checks for common situations
If you are preparing for a long road trip
- Confirm the water and food quantity against the passengers and route.
- Place food and water in a secured, shaded tote.
- Carry the medicine pouch inside the passenger area only while actively traveling, then take it indoors at stops.
- Bring a cooler, ice, or frozen gel packs only if a medicine’s label requires temporary temperature control.
- Keep a written medication list and dosage information with the original containers.
If a heat wave is forecast
- Remove all medicines from the vehicle.
- Inspect water containers and food packages for swelling, leaks, or heat damage.
- Use an ice-filled cooler only as a temporary measure consistent with food and medicine labels.
- Replenish damaged supplies after the heat event.
If a winter storm is forecast
- Check emergency food and water supplies before leaving, as CDC guidance recommends.
- Inspect containers for freezing damage or leaks.
- Take medicines indoors and verify their labeled temperature limits.
- Prepare a cooler-and-pack plan for any refrigerated medicine that must travel.
If the car floods or the kit gets wet
- Separate wet or contaminated medicine from usable supplies.
- Do not use medicine with wet labels, damaged packaging, visible changes, or unknown exposure.
- Contact a pharmacist or manufacturer for product-specific advice.
- Replace food, water containers, and first-aid contents that were contaminated or damaged.
The practical rule to remember
Keep water and ready-to-eat food contained, shaded, secured, and rotated. Keep medicines labeled, dry, and out of the parked vehicle unless they are being actively transported under their product instructions. When temperature, moisture, or damage is uncertain, stop guessing: isolate the medicine and obtain product-specific advice from a pharmacist, clinician, or manufacturer.
