How to store a gas golf cart safely when it’s not in use: put it in a properly ventilated location, keep every ignition source away from gasoline, and follow the storage and return-to-service instructions for the exact make, model, and year. Fuel treatment, draining, battery care, tire preparation, shutoff controls, and recommissioning steps are not universal.
The clearest published example in the available manufacturer material is a Yamaha Golf Car owner manual. It calls for fresh fuel, a specified stabilizer dose, and at least five minutes of operation to circulate the treated fuel. That procedure applies to the Yamaha manual that contains it—not automatically to every gas golf cart.

Start with the exact owner’s manual
Golf carts that look similar can have different fuel systems, batteries, controls, and storage requirements. Before doing anything, identify the manufacturer, model, model year, and any engine or vehicle identification information shown on the cart. Locate the owner’s manual for that exact vehicle and use its storage section as the controlling procedure.

What to find in the manual
- The approved fuel-storage method: stabilizer, draining, or another procedure.
- The approved stabilizer product and dosage, if one is specified.
- Whether the battery should be disconnected, maintained, or handled in another way.
- Any requirements for tires, parking controls, engine shutoff, or other storage settings.
- The inspection and starting procedure required before the cart is used again.
If the manual is missing, obtain the manufacturer’s manual before changing fuel-system settings or disconnecting components. A dealer can help identify the correct procedure when the cart’s model or year is uncertain.
Choose a safe storage location
A garage is the preferred location in Yamaha’s official FAQ because it can help extend golf-car life. The location must also be suitable for a gasoline-powered vehicle, not merely convenient.
Ventilation is a safety requirement
The Yamaha Golf Car owner manual states: “Ventilation is required to remove flammable vapors and fumes from gasoline powered golf car storage areas.” Treat that as a safety requirement for the covered Yamaha vehicles. Do not store a gas cart in a sealed room or any area where gasoline vapors and fumes cannot be removed.
Follow applicable local fire and building requirements for garages, sheds, and other storage areas. If you are unsure whether a location meets those requirements, ask the relevant local authority or a qualified professional before storing the cart there.
Keep ignition sources away
Smoking, sparks, and open flames must be kept away from the cart, fuel, and any fuel-system work. The Yamaha manual specifically warns against these hazards. Do not perform fuel-related work near heaters, pilot lights, welding equipment, grinding tools, or other possible ignition sources.
Do not work on a hot or running engine
Never drain fuel while the engine is hot or running. If your model’s manual requires fuel draining or another fuel-system operation, let the vehicle reach the condition specified by that manual and follow its exact safety directions. Do not substitute a different make’s procedure.

Prepare the fuel according to your cart’s instructions
Fuel preparation is the part of storage where copying another model’s dosage or method can create a problem. Read the manual’s fuel section and the stabilizer product label together. The product label does not replace the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.
The Yamaha procedure documented here
For the Yamaha Golf Car owner manual cited in the manufacturer material, extended storage uses fresh fuel plus Yamaha Fuel Stabilizer and Conditioner, or an equivalent product. The specified amount is 7.5 cc per liter of fuel (1 US fluid ounce per gallon). This is Yamaha’s instruction for the covered manual, not a universal golf-cart dosage.
- Check the manual to confirm that this Yamaha procedure applies to your exact cart.
- Use fresh fuel, as the manual directs.
- Add the specified amount of Yamaha Fuel Stabilizer and Conditioner, or an equivalent product accepted by the manual. Measure it according to the stated fuel volume and the product label.
- Start and operate the cart for at least five minutes so treated fuel is distributed through the system.
- Stop the cart using the normal controls and complete the remaining model-specific storage steps in the manual.
Yamaha says this procedure eliminates the need to drain the fuel system for the model covered by that manual. It also advises consulting a Yamaha dealer if draining is needed. Do not assume that a different Yamaha model, a different year, or another manufacturer has the same allowance.
Why the five-minute run matters
The manual’s five-minute operating period is part of the fuel-treatment procedure, not an optional warm-up recommendation. The purpose stated by the procedure is to distribute treated fuel through the system. Running the cart for less time, or adding stabilizer without operating it as directed, does not follow the cited method.
If your manual calls for draining
Some vehicles may specify a different storage method. If your exact manual calls for draining, use only that procedure and its safety precautions. Never drain a hot or running engine. Work in the ventilated location required by local rules, keep all ignition sources away, and use the containers, disposal method, and follow-up steps specified by the manual. If the instructions are unclear, stop and contact a qualified dealer rather than combining instructions from another cart.
Handle the battery and electrical system only as the manual directs
The available Yamaha material does not establish one battery-disconnection or battery-maintenance method for every gas golf cart. Battery type, charging equipment, wiring, and vehicle electronics vary. For that reason, do not disconnect a cable, connect a maintainer, or change a switch position solely because another cart owner did so.

Questions to answer before storage
- Does the manual require disconnection, periodic maintenance, or another battery setting?
- Does it specify a charger, charging interval, or storage state?
- Are there separate instructions for the starting battery and any accessory battery?
- Must a master switch, run/tow control, or other shutoff be placed in a particular position?
- What inspection is required before reconnecting or charging the battery?
Write down the setting you used and keep any removed hardware with the cart. This record helps prevent an incorrect reconnection when the cart returns to service.
Inspect tires, controls, and the vehicle condition without inventing specifications
Storage can be a useful time to perform the routine inspections listed in the owner’s manual. The Yamaha FAQ and owner-manual material direct owners back to the manual for these inspections, but the available sources do not establish a universal tire pressure, wheel-blocking method, or control position.
Tires and wheels

General condition check

- Select the location. Prefer a suitable garage when possible, and verify that ventilation and local fire requirements are satisfied.
- Remove ignition hazards. Prohibit smoking and keep flames, sparks, and hot equipment away from the cart and fuel.
- Read the fuel section. Determine whether the manual requires fresh fuel with stabilizer, draining, or another method.
- Apply only the specified fuel method. For the cited Yamaha manual, that means fresh fuel, 7.5 cc per liter (1 US fluid ounce per gallon) of stabilizer, and at least five minutes of operation to distribute it.
- Complete manual-specific inspections. Check battery requirements, tires, controls, and other routine items exactly as listed.

Plan for the length of storage

Short non-use
For a brief period, the manual may call for fewer actions than it does for extended storage. Do not assume that adding stabilizer, draining fuel, or disconnecting the battery is necessary unless the manual says so.
Extended non-use

Storage that lasts longer than expected
If the cart remains unused beyond the period you planned, reread the manual before taking new action. Draining fuel because it sounds safer
Yamaha states that its cited stabilizer procedure removes the need to drain the fuel system for the covered model and advises consulting a Yamaha dealer if draining is needed. Draining is not automatically safer or required; it is a model-specific decision.
Storing the cart in an unventilated room
A closed room can fail the ventilation requirement for gasoline-powered golf-car storage. Choose a compliant, ventilated location rather than treating a locked room as automatically safe.
Smoking or using flame during fuel work
Fuel-system work must be separated from smoking, sparks, and open flames. Do not use a work light, heater, torch, or other equipment that could provide an ignition source near fuel vapors.

Battery upkeep, tire pressure, control settings, and return-to-service checks can vary. The correct answer is the exact owner’s manual, not a generalized golf-cart routine.
How to compare storage instructions between carts
If you maintain more than one gas golf cart, compare their manuals rather than creating one shared procedure. A simple record can show where they differ.
