Outdoor storage
If indoor storage is impossible, Ford says the vehicle needs regular maintenance to guard against rust and weather damage. That means inspecting the body and exposed components periodically rather than parking the car and ignoring it. Keep the location well drained, avoid standing water, and follow the cover manufacturer’s instructions if you use a cover; Ford’s cited passage does not mandate a specific cover.
Prepare the car before it enters the space

Fill the tank correctly
That same manual says to fill the tank with high-quality fuel to the first automatic nozzle shutoff. “First shutoff” is the stated stopping point; do not continue topping off after the pump clicks. The retrieved Ford guidance does not establish that a fuel stabilizer, a particular dosage or a particular storage fuel is required for every GT500, so use one only if the exact vehicle documentation calls for it.
If you follow the manual’s periodic-running procedure
The 2025 manual instructs owners to start the engine every 15 days for at least 15 minutes during storage. It specifies running at fast idle with the climate controls set to defrost until the engine reaches normal operating temperature, then shifting through all gears while keeping the brake applied. These are instructions from that 2025 Mustang edition, not a blanket GT500 rule for every year.
- Move the car only where exhaust can disperse safely; never run it in an enclosed garage.
- Start the engine and use the fast-idle/defrost setting described by the manual.
- Wait until normal operating temperature is reached.
- With the brake applied, select each transmission range as directed by the manual.
- Shut the engine down after the required period and record the date.
If you cannot provide safe ventilation or cannot perform the complete procedure, consult the exact owner manual or a qualified technician before choosing an alternative. Do not invent a different interval and present it as Ford’s requirement.

For storage longer than 30 days, Ford’s 2025 Mustang manual gives two approaches: disconnect the 12V battery to reduce electrical loads, or use a trickle charger. It also says to check and recharge the battery as necessary and keep the connections clean.

It does not provide a universal storage overpressure in the cited material. Therefore, do not add an arbitrary number of psi for storage and do not copy a pressure from another Mustang, tire size or model year.
Record the cold pressure and reset all four tires to the same vehicle-label recommendations when the car comes out of storage, before driving at road speed.

The 2013 Mustang Shelby GT500 Owner Guide describes its D.O.T.-approved ultra-high-performance summer tires as track-capable and warns that the rubber compounds can lose flexibility and develop tread-surface cracks below 20°F (-7°C). Ford says those tires should be stored indoors above 20°F (-7°C).

If those tires have been exposed to 20°F (-7°C) or colder, the cited guide says to warm them in a heated space to at least 40°F (5°C) for at least 24 hours before installing them on a vehicle, moving the vehicle with them installed, or checking inflation. Inspect the tires after storage and before use as directed by the applicable Owner’s Manual.
This warning belongs to the cited 2013 guide and tire configuration. It must not be applied automatically to every GT500 year, replacement tire or winter-capable compound. Check the sidewall information, tire manufacturer documentation and the exact Ford manual for the tires actually fitted.
Flat-spot decision checklist
- Confirm the tire specification and temperature exposure.
- Set cold pressures from the vehicle’s Safety Compliance Certification label or Tire Label.
- Do not assume jack stands, tire-saver ramps or extra pressure are required; the retrieved Ford instructions do not establish a universal requirement for any of them.
- Before driving, inspect tread and sidewalls for cracks, deformation or other damage and reset pressures cold.
What to do while the GT500 is stored

- Verify that the tires remain at the recorded cold pressures and have not developed visible damage.
- Confirm that the storage location remains dry and ventilated.

For owners following the 2025 Mustang manual’s procedure, schedule the engine run every 15 days and document each run. Complete the fast-idle, defrost, normal-temperature and brake-applied gear-selection sequence rather than starting the engine briefly and switching it off. The interval is specific to that manual edition; your GT500’s documentation may differ.

Bring the car back into service in a controlled sequence
- Read the exact owner manual again, including any model-specific supplement, before reconnecting the battery or moving the car.
- Inspect the exterior, interior, hinges, latches, seals and exposed metal for corrosion or damage from the storage environment.
- Inspect every tire, including the tread surface and sidewalls. If the tires meet the 2013 guide’s cold-exposure condition, complete the specified 24-hour warm-up before mounting, moving or checking inflation.
