For a Ford GT that will sit for weeks or months, follow Ford Motor Company’s 2022 owner’s-manual procedure: store the car indoors in a dry, ventilated space; clean and protect its surfaces; connect the supplied battery charger/maintainer for storage beyond two weeks; change the oil; fill and stabilize the fuel; maintain Tire Label cold pressures; move the car at least 25 ft (7.5 m) every 15 days; and complete Ford’s brake, fluid, leak, rodent and exhaust checks before driving again.
The details matter because a GT can suffer a discharged or damaged battery, tire flat spots, contaminated oil, stale fuel, corrosion, frozen coolant or blocked exhaust even when it is not being driven. The schedule below separates the tasks by timing and explains how to put the car back into service safely.

When Ford’s long-term-storage procedure applies
Ford Motor Company’s 2022 Ford GT Owner’s Manual treats 30 days or more as long-term storage. Ford warns that leaving the vehicle unused without preparation can degrade performance or cause a failure. Start the preparation before the car is parked, not after the battery has already gone flat or the fuel has aged.
Some steps begin sooner than the 30-day definition. Ford says to connect the vehicle to its supplied battery charger/maintainer whenever storage exceeds two weeks. If the engine will not be operated for more than 72 hours, Ford also specifies a wing-deployment procedure. Those shorter thresholds apply even when your planned storage period is less than 30 days.

Storage objectives
- Keep the 12-volt/lithium-ion electrical system supported with the correct maintainer.
- Prevent moisture, dirt, oil and solvents from attacking paint, trim, rubber and hinges.
- Keep engine oil, fuel and coolant in a condition suitable for the eventual restart.
- Reduce tire flat spots by maintaining pressure and changing the contact patch.
- Make the first drive a controlled inspection rather than an unexamined restart.
Choose and prepare the storage space
Ford’s preferred location is indoors, dry and ventilated. Protect the GT from direct sunlight whenever possible. A controlled indoor space limits ultraviolet exposure, condensation and temperature swings, while ventilation helps prevent trapped moisture and fuel vapors from accumulating around the car.
Prepare the car’s exterior
- Wash away dirt, grease, oil, tar and mud before parking the GT. Residue left on the paint, underbody or wheel areas can hold moisture and become harder to remove later.
- Dry the vehicle thoroughly, including seams and areas around the doors, hood and luggage compartment.
- Lubricate the hood, door and luggage-compartment hinges and latches as directed by Ford.
- Keep every rubber part away from oil and solvents. Do not allow lubricant or cleaning chemicals to migrate onto weather seals or other rubber components.
- After the car is clean and dry, fit a soft, breathable cover. A breathable material is important: an impermeable cover can trap condensation against the finish.
Protect the interior
Cover interior trim before the car is left for the season. The cover should keep dust and incidental light off the trim without trapping dampness. Ford’s instruction to use a breathable exterior cover and to protect interior trim is more useful than sealing the entire car in non-breathing plastic.
Battery: the two-week rule and correct maintainer setup
Ford’s 2022 manual states: connect the vehicle to the battery charger/maintainer provided with the vehicle whenever storage is more than two weeks. This is the primary battery-preservation step, not an optional convenience. The maintainer supports the vehicle while its systems are inactive and avoids relying on a battery that is slowly discharged by normal vehicle electronics.

Use the supplied unit first
Use the charger/maintainer supplied with the GT whenever possible. If it is missing or must be replaced, verify the connector, polarity and compatibility with the GT’s battery system before connecting anything. Ford’s guidance specifically calls for a unit suitable for the vehicle’s lithium-ion/12V requirements. Do not guess from a plug that happens to fit, and do not substitute a charger whose voltage or charging chemistry is unknown.
Connection checklist
- Park the GT in its final storage position with the ignition off.
- Inspect the maintainer, cable and connector for damage, contamination or exposed conductors.
- Confirm that the replacement unit, if any, has the correct connector and polarity and is rated for the GT’s lithium-ion/12V battery system.
- Connect the maintainer exactly as specified for the vehicle and then connect it to its power source.
- Check the unit’s status indication and confirm that it remains in its intended maintenance mode rather than reporting a fault.
- Route the cable so it cannot be pinched by a door, hood or luggage-compartment lid and cannot become a trip hazard.
Ford’s manual does not establish a universal alternative charger, a safe maximum extension-cord length or a particular replacement model. Those details depend on the equipment and installation, so treat the supplied unit and its instructions as the reference.

If the battery is already discharged
Do not assume that leaving a maintainer connected to a severely discharged or damaged battery will correct the problem. A fault indication, swollen battery, hot connector or unusual odor is a reason to disconnect power and obtain qualified service. Before storage, solve the battery problem rather than hiding it under a cover; after storage, Ford advises seeing an authorized dealer if you have concerns.
Engine oil, fuel and coolant
Change the oil before parking
Change the engine oil and filter before storage. Ford explains that used oil contains contaminants that may damage the engine while it sits. Performing the service before storage leaves fresh lubricant in the engine during the inactive period and avoids making the first restart depend on a deferred oil change.
If the GT remains stored for more than a few months, Ford recommends changing the engine oil again before driving. That second change is tied to the longer duration; it is not a reason to run the engine periodically just to make an oil change unnecessary.
Fill and stabilize the fuel
- Fill the fuel tank with high-quality fuel to the first automatic pump shutoff. A full tank reduces the amount of air space where condensation can form.
- Add a commercially available fuel stabilizer in the quantity specified by that product for the fuel volume.
- Run the engine for at least one minute so the treated fuel circulates through the fuel system. Ford’s one-minute figure is the minimum circulation time stated for this preparation.
- Shut the engine down normally and complete the remaining storage steps.
Fuel stabilizer does not replace the full-tank and circulation steps. Conversely, running the engine for one minute without stabilizer does not treat fuel that will sit for months.
Protect the cooling system
Protect the cooling system against freezing. The manual does not give a new coolant mixture or a temperature threshold in this procedure, so use the vehicle’s specified coolant and have its freeze protection checked if the storage space can reach freezing temperatures. A temperate indoor space still warrants a coolant-level and leak check before the car returns to service.

Wing deployment when the engine will not run
If the GT will sit without engine operation for more than 72 hours, Ford instructs you to deploy the wing before switching the car off:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Activate Track mode.
- Return to Normal mode.
- Turn the ignition off.
This is a separate control procedure from the battery-maintainer step. A car stored for several weeks needs both: the wing procedure when the engine will not operate beyond 72 hours and the supplied maintainer whenever storage exceeds two weeks.
Tires: pressure and movement to limit flat spots
Set cold pressures from the car’s label
Inflate all four tires to the recommended cold pressures shown on the Safety Compliance Certification label or Tire Label. Use those vehicle-specific values rather than a generic GT number, a hot-tire reading or a pressure printed elsewhere. Record the readings when the tires are cold so you have a reference for the return-to-service inspection.
Move the GT every 15 days
Ford’s 2022 manual says to move the vehicle at least 25 ft (7.5 m) every 15 days during storage. The movement changes the tire contact patch and allows working parts to be lubricated. Plan the storage space so that this distance can be traveled safely in both directions without moving the car into an obstruction.
Moving the car is not a substitute for maintaining pressure. Check the tires at the interval, move the GT the required distance, and keep the car on a clean, level surface. If storage is in low ambient temperatures, follow Ford’s summer-tire-care instructions; the manual specifically calls out that additional care for low-temperature storage.

A storage schedule by duration
The following schedule combines Ford’s thresholds. Every interval is from Ford Motor Company’s 2022 Ford GT Owner’s Manual; it is not a recommendation to extend a task beyond the stated conditions.
| Planned idle period | Battery | Engine, fuel and coolant | Tires and body | Before driving again |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 72 hours | Use normal shutdown practices; the long-term procedure is not yet triggered by duration alone. | Normal fuel and fluid checks still apply if a warning or leak is present. | Keep the car clean and protected from sunlight where possible. | Inspect the car if conditions changed while parked. |
| More than 72 hours but less than two weeks | Perform the ignition-on, Track-mode, Normal-mode, ignition-off wing procedure. | No special long-term threshold has been reached, but do not store with a known leak or coolant-freeze risk. | Use a dry, ventilated location and a soft, breathable cover. | Check for foreign material and leaks before driving if the car was exposed to contaminants. |
| More than two weeks | Connect the supplied battery charger/maintainer. Verify connector, polarity and lithium-ion/12V compatibility for any replacement. | For a full long-term preparation, change oil and filter, fill with high-quality fuel, add stabilizer and run at least one minute to circulate it. | Set cold pressures to the Tire Label values; move the car at least 25 ft (7.5 m) every 15 days. | Use Ford’s complete return-to-service inspection. |
| 30 days or more | All battery steps above apply. | Use the complete oil, stabilized-fuel and coolant-freeze preparation. | Indoor, dry, ventilated storage, cleaned surfaces, lubricated hinges/latches, protected trim and breathable cover. | Complete every brake, fluid, leak, rodent and exhaust check before the first normal drive. |
| More than a few months | Continue the supplied maintainer and monitor it for fault indications. | Change the engine oil again before driving, as Ford recommends for storage lasting more than a few months. | Continue the 15-day movement and pressure routine, including Ford’s low-temperature summer-tire guidance where applicable. | Do not skip the full inspection because the car was maintained while stored. |
Step-by-step long-term-storage procedure
Use this order for a GT being stored for 30 days or longer. It puts cleaning and fluid preparation ahead of the cover and electrical connection so the car is not disturbed afterward.
- Select the location. Choose an indoor, dry, ventilated space and protect the car from sunlight where possible.
- Clean the GT. Remove dirt, grease, oil, tar and mud, then dry the exterior and relevant seams.
- Lubricate specified hardware. Lubricate hood, door and luggage-compartment hinges and latches while keeping rubber parts away from oil and solvents.
- Protect trim. Cover interior trim and fit a soft, breathable exterior cover.
- Service the oil. Change the engine oil and filter before storage.
- Prepare the fuel. Fill to the first automatic pump shutoff, add commercial fuel stabilizer and run the engine at least one minute to circulate the treated fuel.
- Confirm coolant protection. Make sure the cooling system is protected against freezing.
- Deploy the wing if required. When the engine will not operate for more than 72 hours, turn the ignition on, select Track mode, return to Normal mode and turn the ignition off.
- Set the tires. Adjust all four cold tires to the pressures on the Safety Compliance Certification label or Tire Label.
- Connect the maintainer. For storage beyond two weeks, connect the supplied charger/maintainer and verify that it indicates normal maintenance operation.
- Record the schedule. Mark the next 15-day movement and inspection date, and plan for at least 25 ft (7.5 m) of safe travel.
What to do every 15 days
At each Ford-specified 15-day interval, inspect the storage area and move the GT at least 25 ft (7.5 m). Keep the charger/maintainer connected for storage beyond two weeks, and check its status before moving the car. Confirm that all four tires remain at their Tire Label cold pressures when they are cold.
Ford’s named figures also specify 15 minutes as the minimum periodic engine-running time. If you operate the engine as part of the storage routine, use that Ford figure and do so only in a properly ventilated environment; never run the engine in an enclosed space where exhaust can accumulate. The separate one-minute instruction is specifically the minimum run time to circulate treated fuel after adding stabilizer.
Returning a stored Ford GT to service
Do not simply unplug the maintainer, remove the cover and drive away. Ford’s return procedure is a short safety inspection followed by controlled brake bedding and fluid verification.

- Check levels and leaks. Verify coolant, engine oil and fuel levels, and look for leaks before leaving the storage area.
- Escalate concerns. If a warning, abnormal pedal, leak, blockage, damaged tire, battery fault or other concern remains, Ford says to see an authorized dealer.
Common storage mistakes and the correction
Leaving the battery disconnected or unattended
A disconnected battery can still lose charge, and a charger chosen only because its plug fits can be electrically wrong. For more than two weeks, use the supplied maintainer; if it must be replaced, verify connector, polarity and lithium-ion/12V compatibility first.
Parking with used oil and untreated fuel
Used oil contains contaminants that Ford says may damage the engine. Untreated fuel can age during a long idle period. Change the oil and filter before storage, fill to the first automatic shutoff, add stabilizer and run the engine at least one minute to circulate it.
Using a sealed cover on a damp car
Covering a wet or dirty GT can hold contamination and moisture against the finish. Clean and dry the car, keep it indoors in a dry, ventilated area and use a soft, breathable cover.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIgnoring the 15-day movement
Leaving the tires in one position for months increases the chance of flat spots. Ford’s remedy is to move the GT at least 25 ft (7.5 m) every 15 days and maintain the cold pressures shown on the vehicle label.
Skipping the under-hood and exhaust inspection
A car can look perfect under its cover while rodents or debris have entered the engine compartment or exhaust. Check both areas, along with wipers, brakes, fluids and leaks, before the first drive.
Freezing versus temperate storage
| Condition | Priority actions | What the manual does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Freezing or very cold ambient temperatures | Protect the cooling system against freezing; follow Ford’s summer-tire-care instructions for low ambient temperatures; keep cold pressures at the Tire Label values. | A replacement coolant formula or a single universal temperature limit is not stated in this procedure. |
| Temperate indoor storage | Still use a dry, ventilated location, clean and cover the car, stabilize fuel, support the battery beyond two weeks and move the car every 15 days. | Temperate conditions do not remove the need for the return-to-service brake, fluid, leak, rodent and exhaust checks. |
| Humid or poorly ventilated storage | Choose a better location if possible; ventilation and dryness are Ford’s stated storage conditions. | The procedure does not provide a humidity percentage or dehumidifier setting. |
A practical handover checklist
- Storage date and planned return date recorded.
- Indoor, dry, ventilated parking position selected.
- Dirt, grease, oil, tar and mud removed.
- Hood, door and luggage-compartment hinges and latches lubricated.
- Interior trim covered; breathable exterior cover fitted.
- Engine oil and filter changed before storage.
- Fuel filled to first automatic pump shutoff, stabilizer added and treated fuel circulated for at least one minute.
- Cooling-system freeze protection confirmed.
- Wing deployed using the Track-mode/Normal-mode sequence when engine operation will exceed 72 hours.
- All four cold tires set to Safety Compliance Certification label or Tire Label pressures.
- Supplied battery charger/maintainer connected for storage beyond two weeks.
- Next 15-day movement of at least 25 ft (7.5 m) scheduled.
- If storage will last more than a few months, an oil change before driving scheduled.
Bottom line for a Ford GT stored for months
The safest storage plan is a controlled routine, not simply parking and covering the car. Follow Ford’s 2022 thresholds: use the wing sequence after 72 hours without engine operation, connect the supplied maintainer after two weeks, treat 30 days as long-term storage, move the GT 25 ft (7.5 m) every 15 days, and apply the complete oil, fuel, tire, cleaning and inspection procedure. Before driving, inspect for nests and exhaust blockage, restore Tire Label pressures, verify the brakes, check coolant, oil, fuel and leaks, and consult an authorized dealer if anything is abnormal.
