Store a Corvette clean, completely dry, protected from moisture and rodents, and connected to the correct battery maintainer for its battery type. Change the oil before parking, choose the fuel procedure for the planned storage period and exact model year, set and record the specified cold-tire pressures, and use a cover designed for the storage environment. Before driving again, inspect the car, restore the battery and fuel systems, and perform a controlled systems check.
There is no single procedure for every Corvette. Generation, engine, 12-volt battery chemistry, storage duration, climate, power reliability, and whether the car is indoors or outdoors all change the safest plan. Treat the VIN-specific Chevrolet owner manual as the final authority, then use the preparation sequence below to avoid the common damage caused by a car simply sitting.

1. Define the storage plan before touching the car
Write down the model year, generation, engine, battery type, intended storage length, storage location, likely temperature and humidity exposure, electrical-power reliability, and who will be able to access the car. These details determine whether you can use a maintainer, which fuel treatment is appropriate, and how often the cover and storage area must be checked.

Obtain the owner manual for the exact vehicle identification number. Confirm the specified engine-oil grade, cold-tire pressures, battery connection point, battery chemistry, fuel requirements, and any model-specific storage warnings. Product labels for fuel stabilizers, battery chargers, tire equipment, and covers are also part of the procedure; a product that is suitable for one Corvette or one battery chemistry may not be suitable for another.

2. Prepare a clean, dry car
Wash, dry, and remove attractants
Wash the paintwork, wheels, wheel wells, and underbody areas that have collected road salt, mud, or insects. Dry the car thoroughly, including door jambs, seams, the trunk, and the front compartment. Vacuum the cabin and remove food, wrappers, scented products, and anything else that could attract animals. A cover placed over dirt can abrade the finish; a cover placed over moisture can trap it against paint and trim.
Inspect before covering
Look for existing oil, coolant, brake-fluid, transmission-fluid, or water leaks. Check the condition of the weather seals and verify that the doors, windows, trunk, and front compartment close correctly. Photograph or record any scratches, warning lights, tire damage, or fluid stains so a new problem is not confused with an old one after storage.
Choose a low-moisture location
A secure, ventilated, low-moisture indoor space is the easiest environment to control. Outdoor storage requires a location that does not collect standing water and allows air to circulate around the car. Do not assume that an enclosed space is dry: condensation, damp concrete, leaking roofs, and temperature swings can still produce corrosion.
3. Change the engine oil before long-term storage
Corvette Action Center advises changing the oil and filter before long-term storage, even when the car travels only about 1,000 miles in a year. Used oil contains combustion by-products and moisture; leaving it in the engine for months gives those contaminants more time to contact internal surfaces.
Warm the engine to normal operating temperature before draining. Where the car is equipped with air conditioning, operate it during the final warm-up, then replace the oil and filter with the grade specified in the factory manual. Confirm the level on the correct, level surface and check for leaks after the service. Do not substitute a more convenient viscosity merely because the car will not be driven in winter; use the model’s specified grade.

4. Select the fuel procedure by storage length
Fuel ages while a car is parked, and the correct treatment depends on the time the Corvette will remain out of service. Corvette Action Center describes three planning bands. They are a framework, not a replacement for the exact model-year manual or the fuel product’s label.
| Planned storage | Corvette Action Center procedure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 9 months | Change the oil and filter; store with a full tank using winter fuel; disconnect the negative battery cable. | Confirm the fuel and battery instructions for the exact model year. |
| 9–18 months | Perform the previous steps, add fuel stabilizer, and carry out the stated cylinder-oiling procedure. | Use a product labeled for the Corvette’s fuel and follow its dosing and operating instructions. Cylinder oiling is a hands-on service task. |
| 18 months or longer | Change the oil and filter, preserve the cylinders, disconnect the battery, and drain the fuel system. | Fuel-system draining can create safety and emissions problems; use a qualified technician or dealer if you are not equipped for the work. |
Using stabilizer correctly
Use only a stabilizer whose label covers the fuel in the Corvette. Add the labeled amount to the intended quantity of fuel, then run the engine only as the product and owner manual direct so treated fuel reaches the system. Do not pour in an unmeasured amount, mix products casually, or assume that a short idle will circulate treatment through every component.
Very long storage
For storage beyond 18 months, draining the fuel system and preserving the cylinders is substantially more involved than filling the tank. Fuel can remain in lines, rails, pumps, or other components even after a tank is emptied. If the manual specifies a different method, follow it. If the procedure requires opening the fuel system and you lack the equipment, ventilation, and fire-safety controls, arrange professional service rather than improvising.
5. Maintain the 12-volt battery without creating electrical problems
Standard battery systems
The 2026 Chevrolet Corvette owner manual states: “Extended Storage: It is recommended that the battery maintainer package be used.” It directs owners to plug the maintainer into the underhood accessory power outlet. Use the connection point and maintainer package specified for the car, keep the wiring away from hot or moving parts, and confirm that the outlet and charger are compatible before leaving them connected.
If a maintainer is unavailable, the same manual says to disconnect the black negative cable. Isolate the disconnected cable so it cannot touch the terminal accidentally. When power is restored, memory settings will need to be reset. Disconnecting the cable is not equivalent to maintaining the battery: it prevents the car’s electrical loads from discharging the battery but does not recharge a battery that is already weak.

12-volt lithium-ion variants
For a Corvette fitted with a 12-volt lithium-ion battery, the 2025.5 Chevrolet owner manual says to attach a compatible battery tender or trickle charger and keep the remote key more than 3 m (10 ft) away. Use only a charger approved or identified as compatible with that battery chemistry, and follow the model’s connection instructions. A charger intended for a conventional lead-acid battery can be unsuitable for lithium-ion equipment.

Power reliability and supervision
A maintainer is useful only while it has reliable power and a sound connection. If the storage facility loses power regularly, inspect the charger and battery status when you visit and use the manual’s disconnect method when appropriate. Do not leave a temporary extension-cord arrangement where water, doors, rodents, or vehicle movement can damage it.
6. Protect tires and brakes while the car sits
Set and record cold pressures
Before parking, set all tires to the model’s specified cold pressures and write the values and date on your storage checklist. Inspect tread, sidewalls, age, uneven wear, and existing damage. A parked car can lose pressure, and rubber can take a set over time. The available guidance does not establish one universally correct pressure increase, jack-stand height, tire cradle, or flat-spot product for every Corvette generation, tire, and climate, so do not apply a universal number.
Inspect the tires again before moving the car. Correct pressure does not repair cracking, a bulge, severe flat spotting, or damage discovered during storage; those conditions require tire-service advice before driving.
Expect brake-surface oxidation
Brake rotors and other exposed brake surfaces can develop surface oxidation during humid storage. Light surface rust may be visible when the car is first moved, but you must verify normal braking on a controlled, low-speed test before returning to normal traffic. A soft pedal, grinding, pulling, warning light, or braking that does not improve with gentle stops is a reason to stop and arrange inspection rather than attempting to clean the surfaces with repeated high-speed driving.

7. Control rodents, condensation, and stored-energy hazards
Rodent inspection
Animals seek shelter in engine compartments, wheel wells, exhaust outlets, air intakes, and underbody cavities. Inspect those areas before covering the car and again before starting it. Look for nests, droppings, chewed insulation, damaged wiring, and stored food. Also inspect the cabin, trunk, and front compartment.
If you place any barrier, plug, desiccant, or reminder device in an intake or exhaust opening, write its removal on the start-up checklist and place a second reminder where you will see it before turning the key or pressing the start control. Never start the engine until every obstruction has been removed.
Moisture management
Ventilation and dryness matter more than simply closing the garage door. Avoid parking immediately after driving through rain or washing if the car cannot dry. Check the floor for standing water, keep drainage paths clear, and inspect for condensation after major temperature changes. Moisture trapped under a cover or around brakes, connectors, and seals can create problems even when the paint looks clean.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Match the cover to the storage environment
Indoor storage
For a clean, dry indoor space, Corvette Action Center says a simple cotton-based dust cover is sufficient. Choose a correctly fitted, clean cover with a soft inner surface. A loose sheet can move in drafts and rub the paint; a cover that is too tight can stress mirrors, antennas, or other projections.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOutdoor storage
Outdoor storage requires a weatherproof cover designed for vehicle use and the Corvette’s shape. The cited guidance identifies weatherproof Dupont Tyvek- or Evolution-3-type covers as examples of the category. The cover must shed rain while allowing the vehicle to dry; it cannot compensate for a wet or dirty car underneath.

9. A practical storage-day sequence
- Record the vehicle identity, battery chemistry, storage dates, tire pressures, fluid levels, and any existing damage.
- Wash and dry the exterior, wheels, wheel wells, underbody, door jambs, trunk, and front compartment.
- Vacuum the interior and remove all food, scented items, and loose objects.
- Inspect for leaks, damage, rodent evidence, and malfunctioning latches or seals.
- Warm the engine, operate the air conditioning during the final warm-up where fitted, and change the oil and filter with the factory-specified products.
- Apply the duration-appropriate fuel plan: full tank and winter fuel for the shorter band, labeled stabilizer and cylinder oiling for 9–18 months, or the prescribed fuel-system drain and cylinder preservation for 18 months or more.
- Set and record cold-tire pressures; inspect sidewalls and tread.
- Connect the correct battery maintainer at the specified outlet, or disconnect the black negative cable when the manual’s alternative is required. For lithium-ion variants, use a compatible tender and keep the remote key more than 3 m (10 ft) away.
- Inspect the storage space for moisture and rodents, then fit the clean indoor or outdoor cover.
- Place a dated checklist on the steering wheel or another visible location, including every plug, barrier, desiccant, and battery connection that must be removed or restored.
10. Recommission the Corvette before driving normally
Recommissioning is a separate maintenance operation, not merely removing the cover. Complete it in a ventilated area with the car on a stable, level surface.
- Remove every written reminder, exhaust plug, intake barrier, desiccant, and rodent deterrent. Confirm that nothing is inside an opening or near a belt, fan, pulley, or hot surface.
- Inspect underneath, in the engine bay, around air intakes and exhaust outlets, and throughout the cabin for nests, chewed wiring, leaks, corrosion, cracked belts, damaged hoses, and deteriorated seals.
- Reconnect or recharge the battery using the model-specific procedure. After a negative-cable disconnect, expect memory settings to require reprogramming.
- Restore the fuel system and add fresh fuel as required by the storage method and owner manual. For a drained system, use the specified professional or manual procedure rather than guessing at line connections.
- Set and verify cold-tire pressures. Check for cracking, bulges, severe flat spotting, or other damage, and confirm that the tire-pressure monitoring system reports normally.
- Start the engine in a well-ventilated area. Watch for warning lights, leaks, abnormal noises, smoke, or an exhaust blockage, and shut down if anything is abnormal.
- Test the brake pedal, steering, lights, windows, locks, climate control, and other essential controls while stationary.
- Perform a low-speed test in a safe area. Verify straight-line braking, steering response, transmission operation, and the absence of unusual vibration before normal driving.
11. Troubleshoot problems found after storage
The battery is flat or the car will not wake up
Check the maintainer’s power source, connection, and compatibility before attempting another start. If the negative cable was disconnected, reconnect it as the manual directs and allow for memory-setting resets. A battery that will not hold the required charge needs testing; repeated jump-starting does not correct a failed battery or a wiring problem.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A tire has lost pressure or developed a vibration
Inflate only to the specified cold pressure and inspect the tire for damage. If vibration, a visible flat spot, cracking, or a bulge remains, stop the test drive and have the tire evaluated. Do not assume that several miles will safely cure every storage-related condition.
Brakes feel abnormal
Surface oxidation can occur during storage, but a soft pedal, grinding, pulling, warning lamp, or persistent noise requires inspection. Check for leaks and damaged components before driving farther.
Rodent damage is present
Do not start the engine if wiring, air-intake components, or exhaust outlets are damaged or blocked. Photograph the evidence, remove nesting material only when safe, and have damaged wiring and safety-critical systems repaired before operation.
Moisture or mold is visible
Move the car to a dry, ventilated location if possible and identify the source of water before covering it again. Drying the cover alone will not solve a leaking seal, wet carpet, or condensation problem.
12. What the available guidance does not make universal
Corvette storage advice often includes fixed numbers for tire-pressure increases, jack-stand placement, humidity targets, monthly engine starts, or one “best” additive. Those details are not universal across Corvette generations, tire designs, climates, and battery systems. The cited guidance does not establish a single value for them, so use the exact owner manual, tire manufacturer information, storage-facility conditions, and product labels instead of applying a generic internet rule.
