There is no universal “turn off all ads” switch for a car’s infotainment system. The fix depends on what is interrupting you: an advertisement inside an in-car app, a phone notification, a media app changing from music to an advert, or a promotion built into the vehicle’s own software. Identify that source first, then change the setting that controls it. Make changes while parked; many automotive systems restrict settings while the car is moving.
First identify what kind of interruption you are seeing
Several unrelated events look like “an infotainment ad.” A full-screen card inside a navigation or streaming app is controlled by that app. A banner or spoken alert that mirrors a phone notification is controlled by CarPlay, Android Auto, the phone, or the sending app. A message about connected services, a trial, or a vehicle feature is controlled by the automaker’s software and account system. Music that pauses when an advertisement starts is usually normal media-app behavior rather than a head-unit setting.
| What you notice | Most likely source | Where to look for a remedy |
|---|---|---|
| A visual card appears inside a navigation, music, podcast, or other in-car app | That app’s advertising or subscription system | The app’s own settings, account, or subscription terms |
| A text, calendar item, or alert appears when the phone connects | Phone notification mirrored through CarPlay or Android Auto | Driving Focus, notification permissions, or the sending app’s settings |
| Audio changes from music to an advertisement or an advert-related notification appears | Media-app playback and Android Auto app behavior | The media app and its notification controls; platform safeguards are not a universal ad blocker |
| A prompt mentions connected services, a subscription, a trial, or a vehicle feature | Original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) infotainment software or account | The exact owner’s manual, vehicle settings, or manufacturer support |
| An ad-personalization setting is offered in the car | Advertising identifier used for personalized ads | Google built-in’s advertising-ID controls, where supported |
Before changing anything, note the exact wording, the icon or app name, whether sound also stopped, and whether the event happens only after connecting a particular phone. A photo taken while safely parked can help support staff identify an OEM prompt, but do not photograph or operate the display while driving.

A safe troubleshooting sequence
- Park before investigating. Automotive interfaces can hide controls or block interaction while moving. Put the transmission in Park and follow local safety laws.
- Classify the event. Decide whether it is a visual in-app advertisement, a phone notification, a media playback change, or an OEM promotion. Record which app or screen was open.
- Test the phone connection. If the event disappears when CarPlay or Android Auto is disconnected, focus on phone notifications, the projection platform, and the originating app. If it remains on the built-in system, focus on the vehicle and its apps.
- Silence notifications first when appropriate. Use CarPlay’s Driving Focus or the phone and Android Auto notification controls for alerts that are not part of an app’s own screen.
- Check the app account. An advertisement inside a music, navigation, or podcast app normally requires that app’s ad, subscription, or notification setting. A vehicle-wide setting cannot reliably override an app’s business rules.
- Review advertising-ID controls. On cars with Google built-in, resetting or deleting the advertising ID changes personalization, not the existence of advertisements in car apps.
- Escalate OEM messages with exact vehicle details. Give support the make, model, model year, infotainment software version, country, connected-services account, and the text of the prompt. Menus from another trim or year may not apply.
Cars with Google built-in: control personalization, not every ad
Google provides an advertising-ID control for each user profile in cars with Google built-in. From the car display, open Settings > Google > Ads. You can reset the advertising ID or delete it, depending on the controls presented by the vehicle. Google describes this as controlling use of the advertising ID for personalized ads across apps installed in the car.
Deleting the ID does not remove every advertisement. Google’s support guidance states: “You can’t turn off ads on the apps in your car, but you can control the use of your advertising ID for personalized ads across apps installed in your car.” Read the full explanation at Google Support’s control-ad-settings guide.

- What resetting does: It replaces the advertising identifier, so future personalization can use a different identifier.
- What deleting does: It removes that advertising identifier from the profile’s use, subject to the vehicle and app implementation.
- What neither action does: It does not switch off advertisements supplied by an installed car app, nor does it cancel an app subscription prompt.
These controls are per user profile. If several drivers use separate profiles, each profile may need its own setting. Labels and availability can vary by vehicle, software release, region, and account configuration. If the Ads entry is missing, do not assume another model’s menu path will work; check the vehicle’s manual or support channel.
Apple CarPlay: use Driving Focus for phone interruptions
CarPlay can show or announce phone notifications, including messages and alerts from apps. Apple’s documented control is Driving Focus. On the iPhone, open Settings > Focus > Driving, then configure the Focus behavior and choose Activate With CarPlay when that option is available. Apple’s instructions are at Change settings in CarPlay.

Driving Focus is not documented as a blocker for advertisements rendered inside a CarPlay app. If a navigation, music, podcast, or other app displays an advert within its own interface, open that app’s settings or review its subscription terms. Focus settings cannot be assumed to remove that in-app content.
If a notification keeps getting through
- Check whether the alert is from Messages, a navigation app, a calendar, or another named sender.
- In the Driving Focus configuration, remove that sender from allowed people or apps if you do not need its alerts while driving.
- Check the app’s own notification settings on the iPhone; an app may generate a promotional alert even when its ordinary updates are useful.
- Reconnect CarPlay after changing the setting and test while parked. If the alert still appears as content inside the app, treat it as an in-app ad rather than a Focus notification.
Android Auto: understand the platform’s media and notification safeguards
Android Auto guidance is aimed at app developers and safe behavior, not at providing a driver-facing “remove all ads” switch. The official media guidance says a media app should not start audio through the car speakers unless the user starts playback. It also describes ad metadata that lets Android Auto suppress distracting notifications when a media app changes between music and advertisements. Read the implementation details in Android’s distraction-safeguard guidance.
Those rules can prevent a compliant app from announcing an ad transition as a distracting notification, but they do not delete the advertisement from the media stream. Whether an app follows the guidance, and what controls it exposes, depends on the app’s implementation and account features.

Android’s car-app quality guidance also says car apps must not present advertisements through notifications. That requirement concerns how apps use notifications; it is not a universal consumer control for an advert shown inside an app. The relevant requirements are listed in Android’s car-app quality documentation.
When Android Auto produces an unwanted alert
- While parked, identify the app name shown in the notification or on the phone’s notification history.
- Open the phone’s notification settings for that app and disable promotional categories if the app separates them from navigation, safety, or account alerts.
- Review Android Auto’s own notification and car-display settings on the phone. Menu names vary by Android release and phone manufacturer.
- In the media app, look for autoplay, notification, ad, or subscription controls. Do not disable safety-critical navigation prompts merely to suppress marketing.
- Reconnect Android Auto and test the same route or playback session while stationary. If the content is still embedded in the app’s screen or stream, platform notification settings will not remove it.
Android phone ad-privacy settings: useful for personalization only
Android includes phone-level ad-privacy controls that can limit or reset identifiers and affect how ads are personalized. Google cautions that advertisements may still be based on other settings and on each app’s policies. The official explanation is available in Manage your ad privacy settings on Android.
Changing these phone controls can reduce ad personalization across supported services, but it should not be presented as a way to remove in-car advertisements. A car app may use its own account data, contextual information, or subscription rules. If your goal is simply to stop a notification from interrupting navigation, change the sending app’s notification permission or use Driving Focus rather than changing every advertising preference on the phone.

OEM promotions and connected-service prompts require model-specific steps
A vehicle-brand promotion, trial-expiration message, connected-services renewal prompt, or feature upsell is not controlled by CarPlay, Android Auto, or a general phone ad setting when it originates in the built-in infotainment software. The remedy depends on the make, model, year, infotainment version, region, and sometimes the account associated with the car.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Start with the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle. Search its infotainment section for terms such as notifications, privacy, connected services, messages, offers, or personalization. If the manual does not describe a switch, contact the manufacturer’s support channel or dealer and ask whether the prompt can be disabled, whether it is tied to a trial or subscription, and whether a software update changes its behavior.
Do not apply a menu path copied from a different model. Two vehicles from the same manufacturer can use different software, and a setting may be available in one country or trim but not another. Android Automotive documentation notes that distraction-optimized car settings can restrict interaction while driving; make changes when safely parked. See Android Open Source Project guidance on distraction optimization in Car Settings.

Information to provide support
- Make, model, model year, trim, and country of registration.
- Infotainment software version and whether the car uses Google built-in, CarPlay, Android Auto, or another projection system.
- The exact wording of the prompt, its icon, and whether it appears at startup, after a route begins, or at a fixed interval.
- Whether the vehicle is signed into a connected-services account and whether a trial, subscription, or renewal is pending.
- Whether the event continues with all phones disconnected and whether another driver profile sees it.
Diagnose audio interruptions separately from visual ads
A sudden change in sound does not prove that the vehicle inserted an advertisement. A media app may be moving from a song to an ad, buffering, switching output, or honoring a playback rule. First check whether the app’s timeline or screen identifies an ad break. If it does, use the app’s account or subscription options; the car’s global notification settings will not remove content from the stream.
If audio starts without you pressing Play, Android Auto’s media safeguards are relevant: compliant media apps should not start audio over the car speakers without user initiation. Check for autoplay or resume-playback settings in the app and on the phone. If a spoken notification interrupts music, identify the announcing app and change its notification permission rather than muting all navigation directions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor repeated audio interruptions with no visible app or notification, disconnect the phone and run the built-in system briefly while parked. If the interruption disappears, investigate the phone app or projection connection. If it remains, document the built-in screen and contact vehicle support; an OEM message may be using the car’s own audio channel.
Diagnose navigation interruptions without losing safety alerts
Navigation apps can display promotional cards, sponsored destinations, account notices, traffic alerts, or route changes. Treat a card that is part of the map interface as in-app content. Treat a banner or spoken alert naming another phone app as a notification. These two cases require different settings.
- Keep turn-by-turn directions, hazard warnings, and emergency alerts enabled unless you understand exactly what you are disabling.
- Disable promotional notification categories in the sending app when Android or iOS exposes separate categories.
- Use Driving Focus to reduce nonessential CarPlay notifications while leaving navigation access configured as needed.
- Review the navigation app’s own settings for sponsored places, promotional messages, and account communications.
If the navigation display is built into the car and shows a connected-service offer, capture the wording while parked and use the vehicle-specific support path. A phone setting cannot remove a message generated by the OEM software.
What will not reliably solve the problem
- Deleting one advertising ID and expecting every ad to vanish. The Google built-in control changes use of that identifier for personalization; it does not turn off ads in car apps.
- Turning on Driving Focus for an in-app advertisement. Focus controls notifications and messages, not content rendered inside a CarPlay app.
- Changing Android phone ad privacy and assuming the car is ad-free. Apps can use other settings, account information, or their own policies.
- Muting the entire infotainment system. This can hide useful navigation directions and safety alerts while leaving visual promotions untouched.
- Installing a generic blocker or replacing hardware without identifying the source. No universal hardware replacement or generic device is established as a reliable fix for an unspecified vehicle and interruption.
- Using a menu path from another model year. Infotainment software, account features, and regional availability differ.
A compact decision tree
- Does the interruption have an app name? If yes, open that app’s notification, ad, or subscription settings. If no, continue.
- Does it occur only when a phone is connected? If yes, test CarPlay or Android Auto notification controls and the phone app’s permissions. If no, continue.
- Is it visible inside a map or media interface? If yes, it is probably in-app content; use the app’s controls. If no, continue.
- Does it mention connected services, a trial, or a vehicle feature? If yes, use the exact owner’s manual or manufacturer support route.
- Is the issue only ad personalization? On Google built-in, review Settings > Google > Ads; on Android, review phone ad-privacy settings, understanding that neither promises ad removal.
How to verify that a change worked
Test one setting at a time while parked so you know which control changed the behavior. Reconnect the same phone, open the same app, and reproduce the condition without driving. Check both the display and audio: a notification may disappear while an in-app card remains, or an audio alert may stop while a visual message continues. If the event returns after a profile switch, software update, account renewal, or reconnection, record that trigger for support rather than repeatedly changing unrelated privacy settings.
