The safest answer is to restore the missing mirror before driving on public roads. A shoulder check, rear camera, or blind-spot warning can help you detect nearby traffic, but none automatically recreates the continuous side-and-rear view provided by a properly fitted mirror. Until the vehicle is repaired or its configuration is confirmed lawful and adequate for the road where you drive, avoid unnecessary trips and maneuvers.
If you must move the vehicle briefly, use every available mirror or display, keep your speed and following distance conservative, make a quick shoulder check before each lane change or merge, and proceed only when the entire path is clearly open. The exact equipment requirement depends on your country or state, vehicle class, model year, and design.

Why a missing side mirror creates a serious visibility gap
A side mirror gives you a continuing view along the vehicle’s flank and toward traffic approaching from behind. Without it, you lose information that a single glance cannot fully recover: how quickly another vehicle is closing, whether a motorcycle is hidden beside the rear quarter, and whether a vehicle remains in the lane you want to enter.
Looking over your shoulder is useful for checking a blind spot immediately before a maneuver. It is not a substitute for monitoring the whole rearward scene. You cannot safely keep your head turned long enough to observe every vehicle while also controlling the car and watching the road ahead.

That is why the first response should be equipment repair, not a new scanning trick. If the mirror is loose, cracked, missing, or unable to provide a clear image, treat the vehicle as needing attention before normal driving.
Check whether the vehicle is roadworthy and permitted
Inspect the mirror and its mounting
- Confirm whether the complete assembly is missing or whether only the glass, housing, adjustment mechanism, heater, turn signal, or camera is damaged.
- Make sure any remaining mirror is firmly attached, unbroken, clean, and adjustable enough to show the required area.
- Look for damage that could make the mirror vibrate, fold unexpectedly, or lose its setting while moving.
- Check the owner’s manual for the correct mirror position and any calibration procedure for integrated cameras or driver-assistance systems.
California inspection guidance, for example, says mirrors must be secure, unbroken, and provide clear visibility. That is a state-specific inspection standard, not a universal rule for every jurisdiction.
Verify the rule for your exact vehicle
Do not assume that a rule for a passenger car applies to a van, bus, truck, motorcycle, three-wheeled vehicle, modified vehicle, or a different model year. The US federal rear-visibility standard sets requirements by vehicle class and configuration. For passenger cars, the provisions address an interior mirror and a driver-side exterior mirror, with additional passenger-side requirements in specified situations when the interior mirror’s field of view is insufficient. Other vehicle classes have their own provisions.
Canadian federal vehicle regulations separately describe mirror requirements for passenger cars and three-wheeled vehicles, including an exterior driver-side mirror and a defined field of view. Provincial or territorial operation and inspection rules can still affect what is permitted on the road.
Before driving, check the authority that regulates the vehicle where it will be used. Have the vehicle identification information, model year, body style, and the reason the mirror is absent ready when you ask. A vehicle that was manufactured with a particular mirror arrangement, a vehicle modified for a special purpose, and a vehicle with a temporary repair may be treated differently.

Choose a proper repair rather than relying on a temporary aid
Vehicle-specific replacement assembly
A vehicle-specific exterior replacement is normally the strongest repair because it is designed for the correct year, make, model, side, mounting points, adjustment range, and wiring. Confirm whether the original mirror included heating, a turn signal, power adjustment, folding, a blind-spot sensor, or a camera. A replacement that fits physically but removes a required function or blocks the intended field of view may not be an adequate repair.
Aftermarket alternative
An aftermarket assembly can work when its fit, adjustment range, visibility, wiring, and certification are suitable for the vehicle and jurisdiction. Verify all of the following before installation:

- Whether the resulting field of view meets the applicable vehicle requirement.
- Whether installation instructions require calibration or post-installation testing.
If ordering online, a phrase such as replacement side view mirror for car is only a starting point. Add the year, make, model, side, and equipment details; do not treat a universal stick-on mirror or a small blind-spot insert as a replacement for required equipment.
Temporary measures
Tape, a loosely attached housing, a handheld mirror, or an improvised extension may shift, detach, distort distance, or obstruct the view. Use such measures only to protect the vehicle while it is stationary or while arranging a proper repair, not as proof that the vehicle is ready for ordinary public-road driving.
Set up the remaining visibility before moving
- Adjust the driver’s seat first. Set your seating position, steering wheel, and head restraint before adjusting any mirror. Changing the seat afterward changes the field of view.
- Set the interior mirror, if fitted. Aim it to show as much of the rear window and traffic behind as possible without moving your head.
- Adjust the remaining exterior mirror. Use it for the side and rearward area it can actually show; do not angle it so far inward that it duplicates the interior mirror.
- Clean glass and camera lenses. Rain, dust, frost, glare, and condensation can turn a marginal view into no useful view.
- Learn the uncovered zones while stationary. With the car parked safely, identify where a vehicle disappears from the remaining mirror and where it becomes visible through a direct glance. This helps you understand the limitation without experimenting in traffic.
Do not begin a trip until you can identify what each available view shows and what it cannot show. If the uncovered area is too large to judge safely, stop and arrange repair or another vehicle.

Use a deliberate scan for every lane change or merge
Use the following sequence whenever you intend to move sideways. It is slower than an ordinary mirror check, so leave a larger gap and avoid unnecessary lane changes.
- Plan early. Read signs and lane markings well before the maneuver. If you wait until the last moment, you may feel pressured to move without a complete view.
- Check the road ahead. Confirm that traffic, pedestrians, signals, and pavement conditions allow the maneuver. Keep the vehicle centered and controlled.
- Check every available mirror or display. Use the interior mirror, remaining exterior mirror, and any factory display for the areas each one covers. Look for a vehicle closing from behind, not just a vehicle already beside you.
- Signal before moving. A signal communicates your intention; it does not give you priority or prove that the lane is clear.
- Make a quick shoulder glance toward the target lane. Turn your head, not your whole body, and look through the side window toward the rear quarter. California driver guidance describes this as turning the head quickly to look over the shoulder before changing lanes or merging.
- Return your eyes to the road ahead. Do not sustain a long look away from the direction of travel. Keep the steering steady so the vehicle does not drift during the glance.
- Move only into a clearly open gap. If another vehicle’s speed or position is uncertain, wait. Cancel the maneuver rather than guessing.
- Change one lane at a time where appropriate. After entering the first lane, stabilize the vehicle and repeat the full scan before moving again.
A shoulder check answers the narrow question, “Is something immediately beside the vehicle?” It does not answer, by itself, “Is the lane open far enough behind me for this speed?” Use the available mirrors and displays for that longer view, then use the shoulder glance as the final close-range check.
Adjust your driving style to compensate for reduced information
Leave more space
Increase following distance so you have time to identify traffic and make a safe decision without an abrupt lane change. A larger gap also gives a vehicle approaching from behind more time to become visible in the remaining mirror or through direct observation.
Reduce unnecessary lane changes
Choose the lane that lets you continue toward your destination without repeated merging. Enter the correct lane early when signs and road layout make it possible. Missing a turn is safer than crossing several lanes with an incomplete view.
Use a conservative speed in complex traffic
At higher speeds, a vehicle can travel a significant distance while your head is turned for a shoulder check. Slow to a safe, lawful speed for the conditions, but do not drive so slowly that you create a new hazard or violate a minimum-speed rule.

Expect smaller road users
Check specifically for motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, and pedestrians. Their smaller size can make them harder to detect in a mirror or through a brief glance, and they may be present beside the vehicle even when a larger car is not.
Approach turns, intersections, and bike lanes as separate checks
Do not use a lane-change routine as a substitute for a turn scan. Before turning or crossing a bike lane, inspect the intended path and the area beside the vehicle for vehicles, motorcycles, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Check the relevant blind spot shortly before the turn, then keep monitoring the crossing area as you slow.
At an intersection, scan in stages: the lane ahead, the crosswalk or bike crossing, the near side of the vehicle, and the far side. A vehicle that was hidden beside the missing-mirror side may enter the turning path while you are looking forward. If buildings, parked vehicles, darkness, rain, or glare prevent a clear view, stop where permitted and wait for a better sight line rather than edging forward blindly.

Use the camera as an aid, not the only view
A rear camera can show the area behind the bumper, but its screen has a limited field of view and may not show hazards beside or approaching the vehicle. California DMV guidance warns that cameras may not show all hazards and directs drivers to look back over the right shoulder while backing. That is California guidance for driving and testing; it should not be read as a universal camera rule.

- Press the brake, select reverse, and check the camera image if one is fitted.
- Look in the direction of travel over your right shoulder through the rear window where the vehicle design allows.
- Use the remaining mirror and side-window views to check the flanks.
- Back at walking speed or slower when conditions require it.
- Stop immediately if the view is interrupted, a person appears, or you are no longer certain what is behind or beside the vehicle.
- Ask a passenger to spot when one is available and can stand in a safe, visible position. The passenger’s signal is an aid, not a reason to stop looking yourself.
If you cannot see the intended path, do not reverse based on a camera outline or a previous assumption that the area is clear. Reposition the vehicle, get out and inspect again, or choose a different parking arrangement.
Use technology only for the function it actually provides
- Rear camera: useful for the rear area displayed on the screen, but unable to show every hazard around the vehicle.
- Blind-spot warning: helpful when a functioning, compatible system detects an object in its monitored zone; it may not detect every road user, may not cover the full missing-mirror area, and does not replace visual confirmation.
- Surround-view or side cameras: useful only if the lenses are clean, the display is working, and you understand each camera’s coverage and distortion.
- Interior mirror or digital rear display: provides the rearward field it was designed to show, not a complete view along the missing side.
Technology can fail because of dirt, snow, wiring faults, poor lighting, sensor limitations, or a blocked view. Treat alerts and screens as additional information. Never interpret a silent warning as proof that the blind spot is empty.
What to do when the view is still inadequate
Abort the maneuver. Keep the vehicle in its lane, maintain control, and wait for traffic to clear or for a safer location. If a lane change is not essential, continue in the current lane and reroute later. If the missing mirror makes ordinary traffic judgment unreliable, park legally and arrange a repair, roadside assistance, or another means of transportation.

Common mistakes and their safer alternatives
| Mistake | Why it fails | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Relying only on a shoulder glance | A glance covers an instant and a narrow angle, not the entire closing-traffic picture. | Use available mirrors or displays, signal, then make a quick shoulder check before moving. |
| Holding the head turned for several seconds | The vehicle can drift and the road ahead goes unobserved. | Turn only your head, keep the check brief, and return your eyes forward. |
| Treating the signal as permission | A signal communicates intent but does not make an occupied lane safe. | Signal early and wait for a confirmed gap. |
| Trusting a rear camera alone | The camera may not show hazards beside or outside its frame. | Combine the camera with direct observation, mirrors, and a slow walking-speed backup. |
| Using a stick-on blind-spot mirror as a legal fix | It may distort the image, detach, or fail to provide the required field of view. | Install a compatible replacement assembly and verify local requirements. |
| Changing several lanes at once | Each additional lane adds another blind area and another conflict. | Move one lane at a time, stabilizing and rescanning between moves. |
| Continuing when visibility is uncertain | Guesswork cannot identify a fast-closing vehicle or vulnerable road user. | Wait, stop, reroute, or repair the vehicle. |
A practical pre-drive checklist
- Is the mirror missing, loose, cracked, dirty, or unable to adjust?
- Have you confirmed the vehicle’s equipment requirement for the place where it will be driven?
- Is the replacement the correct year, make, model, side, and equipment configuration?
- Are the remaining mirror, windows, camera lens, and displays clean and working?
- Can you identify the uncovered area beside and behind the vehicle?
- Do you have enough time and space to avoid unnecessary lane changes?
- Will weather, darkness, glare, cargo, passengers, or window tint further reduce visibility?
- If you cannot answer these questions confidently, can you delay the trip or arrange another vehicle?
How to practice safely
Practice only in a legally permitted, low-speed area away from public traffic, such as a suitable empty lot with permission. Sit in your normal driving position and identify where a parked object disappears from the available mirror and where it becomes visible through the side window. Then practice the sequence of mirror or display check, signal, brief shoulder glance, and controlled steering while stationary or at very low speed.
Do not use public roads to discover the missing mirror’s blind area. Practice cannot make an incomplete view complete; it can only help you understand the limits and perform the required checks consistently.
When a missing mirror may be part of a permitted design
Some vehicles are built with unusual body layouts, camera-based systems, or special-purpose configurations. Whether such a design is permitted depends on the applicable standard and the vehicle’s approval, not on the driver’s ability to compensate with head checks. Ask the relevant vehicle authority, inspection station, or manufacturer for a vehicle-specific answer and keep any approval or repair documentation with the vehicle when appropriate.

For an ordinary passenger car that was designed and delivered with exterior side mirrors, assume that restoring the original coverage is the safest course unless the responsible authority confirms another configuration. The fact that the car can be moved without a mirror does not establish that it is roadworthy or lawful.
