A festive “save £X” banner is not proof that you are getting £X off. To establish whether a UK car deal is genuine, verify three things in order: the exact vehicle and specification, the evidence behind the comparison (“was”) price, and the total amount you will actually pay after compulsory charges and finance costs.
Use the advert as a starting point, not as the conclusion. Save it, obtain an itemised written quote, ask how the higher price was established, and compare the same car with like-for-like alternatives before paying a deposit.
What a misleading festive discount can look like
A car advertisement can create a misleading overall impression even when each individual number appears technically accurate. The UK advertising rules focus on what a typical consumer is likely to understand from the ad, including omissions, emphasis, photographs and conditions that are difficult to notice.

An advertiser’s intention does not by itself settle whether an ad is misleading; the impression and likely effect on consumers matter.
Current ASA and CAP guidance should be read alongside the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCCA). Its unfair-commercial-practices provisions replaced and updated the former Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations, and related CAP Code amendments took effect on 7 April 2025. ASA advice and older rulings remain useful illustrations, but a historical ruling is not a universal formula for every present-day sale.

The headline saving may use a weak comparison
“Was £32,000, now £27,000” suggests that the same car was normally sold for £32,000. That implication is difficult to support if the vehicle was offered at the higher figure only briefly, was unavailable in practice, or repeatedly moved between inflated “full” prices and sale prices. The ASA expects advertisers to provide enough pricing history to assess the usual selling price; its current advice refers to at least three months of history as an evidence expectation, not as a fixed statutory number of days that automatically validates every promotion.
The photograph may show a better-equipped car
A picture of a high-trim model with metallic paint, alloy wheels or other options can make a lower headline price appear to cover those features. In a 5 March 2014 ASA car-ad ruling cited in price guidance, the featured vehicle’s metallic paint and alloy wheels were not included in the price shown. The lesson is practical: identify the stock number or registration and confirm every visible feature that costs extra.

CAP pricing rules require quoted prices to include non-optional taxes, duties, fees and charges that apply to all or most buyers. If a charge cannot be calculated in advance, the ad must say that it is excluded and explain how it will be calculated. Delivery, preparation, administration or mandatory protection products therefore need to be separated from optional extras and explained in writing.
A step-by-step check before you commit
1. Preserve the advert as it appeared
Take a screenshot or save a copy showing the date, seller, vehicle registration or stock number, model and trim, advertised price, conditions and any countdown or “limited stock” wording. Keep the page address and the version of the advert you saw. This record helps you ask precise questions if the page changes and avoids relying on memory after a salesperson gives you a different figure.
- Record whether the claim says “save”, “was/now”, “from”, “up to”, “cash price” or a monthly finance amount.
- Note whether the price is conditional on finance, a trade-in, a deposit, a particular customer group or buying another product.
- Capture small-print exclusions, stock limits, expiry dates and delivery statements, not just the large banner.
2. Identify what the comparison price means
Ask the seller to define the benchmark in plain language. It might be a previous dealer selling price, a manufacturer’s recommended retail price (RRP), or another reference. The basis must be clear and accurate, and a “was” or RRP figure should represent a genuine, established usual selling price for the relevant product.
Ask these questions in writing:
- Was this exact vehicle offered to customers at the higher price?
- Was it actually available to buy at that price, or was the figure theoretical or limited to an unavailable version?
- Does the comparison refer to this dealer, the manufacturer, or a different sales channel?
- What dates and selling prices make up the comparison?
A manufacturer RRP is not automatically the price customers usually pay. Conversely, a previous dealer price is not automatically reliable if the car was never genuinely available at that amount.

3. Examine the complete pricing history
Do not stop at the immediately preceding price. Ask how long the exact vehicle was offered at each price and whether buyers could complete a purchase during those periods. Look for repeated fluctuations, alternating sale and full-price periods, or a higher price that appears only long enough to create a saving claim.
The ASA’s current advice considers the particular pricing history, duration, sales evidence, advertising channel and context. There is no universal “28-day” or “30-day” rule that makes a comparison valid. A longer period at a higher price may still be unconvincing if sales evidence is absent; a shorter period may need especially clear evidence of genuine availability and demand.
Ask for the history for the exact stock number, not merely the same model name. Different trim levels, model years, registration dates and option packs can have different prices and different availability.
4. Match the exact car and specification
Compare the registration or stock number, model year, trim, engine, transmission, colour, mileage, condition and included equipment. For a used car, the age, mileage and service history are part of what makes it a particular product. For a new car, the build specification and delivery status matter.

Check every feature visible in the image or described in the text:
- Metallic or special paint
- Alloy wheels
- Panoramic roof, technology or assistance packs
- Upgraded infotainment or upholstery
- Fitted accessories and protection treatments
Ask the seller to confirm which of these are included in the advertised vehicle price. If the photograph is illustrative, the ad should make that clear rather than allowing a higher specification to carry the lower model’s price impression.

5. Obtain an itemised, all-in quote
Request a written quote for the exact car before paying a deposit. It should distinguish the vehicle price from charges and products so you can see what is compulsory and what you can decline.

CAP rules say a quoted price must include non-optional taxes, duties, fees and charges applying to all or most buyers. Where an amount cannot be calculated in advance, the advertisement must explain that it is excluded and how it will be calculated. A vague “plus fees” statement is not a substitute for telling you what the charge is or how it arises.
6. Test “from” and “up to” claims
“From £X” applies only to vehicles and circumstances that genuinely qualify for that starting price. “Save up to £X” describes a maximum benefit, not what every buyer will receive. Establish which model, trim, stock, customer type, date and conditions deliver the advertised figure.
Ask whether the lowest price requires a particular finance product, a qualifying trade-in, a deposit, a business purchase, a loyalty status or acceptance of a car that differs from the one pictured. If only a small portion of available vehicles qualifies, the ad should not create the impression that the benefit is typical or widely available.
7. Treat urgency and scarcity as claims to verify
A countdown clock, “ends tonight” message, “last few remaining” warning or “festive only” label can push you to decide before checking the figures. CMA online guidance identifies urgency claims and price-reduction claims as practices that can mislead or unfairly pressure consumers.
A seasonal deadline does not prove that the underlying saving is genuine. Check whether the same vehicle or promotion was advertised earlier, whether the clock resets, and whether the seller can explain the actual end date and stock condition. If you need time to read a finance agreement or obtain another quote, ask for the terms in writing rather than relying on a timer.

8. Check finance by total cost, not the monthly headline
A low monthly payment can result from a large deposit, a long term, a substantial final payment or fees that are not prominent in the banner. Request the complete finance terms and compare the total amount repayable with the cash price and with another finance quote for the same car.
Use this checklist:
- Eligibility restrictions and whether approval is guaranteed or subject to status
- Deposit required and whether a trade-in is assumed
- Annual percentage rate (APR) and any separate interest or administration fees
- Number and amount of regular instalments
- Any balloon or final payment
- Total amount repayable over the full agreement
- Consequences of changing or ending the agreement early
The US Federal Trade Commission offers a practical “out-the-door” and finance-question checklist. It is US consumer advice, not a statement of UK law, but the questions are useful: confirm that the advertised vehicle is available, obtain all charges in writing and compare the complete cost rather than only the monthly figure.
How to compare two festive offers fairly
Put both offers on the same basis. A bigger banner saving can disappear when one quote includes equipment or compulsory charges that the other leaves out.

Compare cars with the same model year, trim, equipment, mileage, condition and sales channel. A new car, a nearly new demonstrator and a used example may share a model name while representing different products. Treat the comparison as a buying check; it does not, by itself, prove that either advertisement breaches the law.

“Save £X” based on an inflated previous price
Ask for the exact vehicle’s price history and the dates it was genuinely available at the higher figure. If the seller supplies only a generic model RRP, ask why that is the appropriate comparison for this stock number.
“Was/now” after repeated price changes
Request the sequence of prices rather than only the last change. Repeated alternation between a high “full” price and a sale price can undermine the claim that the higher amount was the usual selling price.
A premium photograph beside a base price
Match the image to the specification and ask which visible options are included. A disclaimer hidden below the main claim may not cure a prominent impression that the pictured car costs the headline amount.
“From” pricing with little qualifying stock
Ask how many vehicles qualify, where they are located, and whether the advertised car is one of them. Confirm whether delivery or preparation charges apply to the lowest-priced examples.

“Up to” savings that require several conditions
List every condition needed for the maximum saving and ask what saving applies to the car you actually want. A maximum benefit should not be presented as though it were standard.
Trade-in value used to disguise the real price
Keep the new-car price and your current car’s valuation separate. A generous trade-in figure can make the “changeover” amount look attractive while the advertised vehicle price or mandatory fees remain high.
Finance payment used instead of a price
Ask for cash price, deposit, APR, fees, instalments, final payment and total repayable in writing. Compare those figures with a cash purchase and another quote for the same vehicle.
An illustrative way to calculate the real saving
Suppose an advert says “was £X, now £Y”. Do not calculate the saving as X minus Y until you have established that X was a genuine, available selling price for the same car. Build the calculation in this order:
- Identify the exact vehicle and specification.
- Confirm the evidence and dates behind X.
- Add every compulsory charge to Y.
- Remove optional products you do not want.
- For finance, add the deposit, all instalments, fees and final payment to obtain the total amount repayable.
- Compare that total with another quote for the same car and with the cash price.
If the seller cannot explain X, the meaningful comparison may be the all-in price against comparable cars elsewhere rather than the advertised saving figure. That does not automatically establish wrongdoing, but it tells you that the banner is not a reliable measure of value.
What to do when the advert still looks misleading
Before paying a deposit
- Ask for the exact car’s itemised offer, including mandatory charges and finance terms.
- Request the explanation and relevant period for the reference price.
- Confirm the promotion’s expiry, eligibility and stock conditions.
- Check a like-for-like alternative and allow time to read the documents.
- Keep copies of the advert, quote and messages.
If the seller will not clarify the figures
Do not treat an unexplained deadline as a reason to proceed. Ask the seller to identify the car, state the total price and put the conditions in writing. If the answers change between the advert, salesperson and paperwork, pause the transaction and seek independent UK consumer guidance.
Reporting an advertisement
Preserve the advert and supporting documents if you believe its overall impression is materially misleading. You can consider raising an advertising complaint with the ASA. ASA and CAP guidance addresses advertising principles; it does not, on its own, establish every remedy or procedure for an individual vehicle-sale dispute. For contractual, payment or wider consumer-law questions, consult current UK consumer guidance or an appropriately qualified adviser.
