How Montway’s car-shipping process works
Montway’s workflow has three practical stages: quote and booking, pickup and transit, and delivery and inspection. Keeping those stages separate makes it easier to know which decisions you must make and which details the assigned trucker will confirm.
1. Quote and booking
You provide the route, vehicle details, operating condition, preferred shipping date, and transport type. Montway then matches the shipment with an available carrier. Its process guide states that no payment is required until the shipment is scheduled for pickup.

2. Pickup and transit
After a carrier is assigned, the trucker contacts you to confirm a practical pickup location and time. At pickup, both parties document the vehicle’s condition on the Bill of Lading. The trucker then transports the vehicle and coordinates delivery.
3. Delivery and inspection
At delivery, compare the car with the pickup inspection, note any change on the delivery paperwork, and sign only after the condition has been recorded. Montway describes delivery dates as estimates because traffic, weather, mechanical issues, routing, and other conditions can change during transit.
What you need before requesting a quote
Have the following information ready. Accurate details reduce repricing, scheduling problems, and surprises when the carrier arrives.
- Pickup and delivery locations: Provide complete addresses when possible. If you do not yet know the exact address, Montway says a representative can provide an approximate city-based estimate.
- Vehicle identity: Give the year, make, model, body style, and any major modifications.
- Operating condition: State whether the car runs, rolls, steers, and brakes. A non-running vehicle may require special loading equipment and can change the quote.
- Earliest available shipping date: This is the first date the vehicle can be collected, not a guaranteed delivery date.
- Transport type: Choose open or enclosed transport based on the vehicle’s value, condition, and protection needs.
- Vehicle size and modifications: Oversize dimensions, lifted suspensions, lowered cars, roof racks, wide tires, and other alterations can affect equipment and price.

Call an advisor when details are uncertain
A representative can help when an address is unknown, a vehicle is inoperable, a street is difficult for a tractor-trailer to reach, or you need to discuss an expedited pickup. Tell the advisor about anything that could require a different truck or loading method.
Ask what the quote includes
Before booking, confirm the total price, the pickup window, the transport type, any expedited-service charge, payment timing, and the carrier’s requirements. Montway says its TruePrice Guarantee protects the booked price for 30 days. The guarantee applies to the booked shipment under the terms Montway provides; it does not eliminate the need to disclose changes to the vehicle, route, or service.

- Fuel prices
- Route length and how commonly carriers travel that route
- Vehicle size, weight, condition, and modifications
- Open versus enclosed transport
- Season and demand
- Pickup flexibility and whether the vehicle can meet the truck near a main route
Because these factors change, an old quote is not a reliable forecast for a new shipment. Request a current quote using the exact vehicle and route.
Open transport
Open transport carries vehicles on a standard open car-hauler. Montway describes it as the budget-oriented option and the choice most customers make for ordinary vehicles. The car is exposed to normal road and weather conditions, so discuss the vehicle’s existing finish and any concerns before booking.
Enclosed transport
Enclosed transport places the vehicle inside a covered trailer. It costs more, but provides additional protection from weather and road debris. It is commonly selected for luxury, classic, collector, restored, and other specialty vehicles where minimizing exposure matters more than the lowest price.

Flexible dates and meeting points
Montway says flexible pickup timing can reduce cost because it gives the carrier more opportunities to combine your vehicle with other shipments. Meeting the driver near a main route instead of requiring a difficult residential approach may also lower the price or make scheduling possible. The exact savings are not fixed; ask for a revised quote for each option.

Shipping more than one vehicle
Montway says two or more vehicles on one order may qualify for a multi-vehicle discount. Eligibility and the amount depend on the current quote, so have every vehicle’s details ready and ask the representative to price them together.
How to book the shipment
- Review the quote details. Check the route, vehicle description, operating condition, transport type, pickup date, estimated delivery range, and total price.
- Disclose changes. Tell Montway if the vehicle, address, access, dimensions, or running condition differs from the original quote.
- Confirm the service level. Ask whether pickup is standard or expedited and what “guaranteed pickup” means for your order.
- Follow the booking instructions. Complete the requested contact and payment information and save the confirmation.
- Keep the shipment documents accessible. You will need the booking details, contact information, and Bill of Lading at pickup and delivery.

Clean and document the exterior
- Wash the exterior, including wheels and lower body panels, so scratches, dents, chips, and paint transfer are visible.
- Photograph every side of the vehicle, the roof, wheels, glass, bumpers, interior, odometer, and any existing damage.
- Take close-up photos of each defect and include a wider image showing where it is located.
- Record the date and keep the images until after delivery and claim resolution, if needed.
Remove or secure items
- Remove valuables, documents, firearms, electronics, and anything you cannot replace.
- Remove loose accessories such as removable antennas, spoilers, ornaments, and roof attachments unless the carrier specifically approves them.
- Remove toll transponders to prevent charges while the vehicle is on the truck.
- Disable alarms and provide instructions for any immobilizer or special starting procedure.
Follow the personal-item limit
Montway’s current guidance allows up to 100 lb of personal items in one box or one piece of luggage placed in the trunk. Personal belongings may not have the same coverage as the vehicle. Use the current booking instructions, keep the load within the stated limit, and remove anything valuable or irreplaceable.

Set the fuel level and mechanical condition
Keep fuel at the low level specified in Montway’s preparation guide rather than filling the tank. A lower fuel level reduces weight and limits hazards. Check for leaks, make sure the tires are properly inflated, and disclose warning lights or mechanical problems. Tell the carrier clearly if the vehicle does not run, steer, or brake.
Prepare keys and paperwork
Have the ignition key, door key, trunk key, and any required fob available. Do not hand over irreplaceable keys. Keep registration, insurance, and identification documents with you unless the carrier gives a specific documented instruction.
Choosing a safe pickup location
Large car-haulers need room to approach, load, turn, and leave. A narrow residential street, low bridge, steep grade, dead end, or restricted neighborhood can make a promised address unusable.
- Discuss the address with the trucker before pickup day.
- Identify a nearby commercial lot, wide side street, or other legal location if the truck cannot safely reach the door.
- Confirm that you can legally wait there and that the vehicle will be accessible at the agreed time.
- Do not assume “door-to-door” means the trailer can stop directly in front of your house; it means the carrier aims to come as close as safely and legally possible.
Pickup inspection and the Bill of Lading
The Bill of Lading is the key condition record for the shipment. Walk around the vehicle with the trucker in good light. Compare the actual car with your photographs and point out every existing scratch, dent, chip, crack, wheel mark, and interior issue.

- Check the recorded mileage and fuel level.
- Ensure existing damage is marked in the correct location.
- Note missing parts, loose trim, warning lights, or special loading instructions.
- Read the document before signing and keep your copy.
Sign the pickup paperwork only after the condition record is accurate. If you disagree with an entry, ask the trucker to correct it before departure and retain photographs supporting your description.
What happens during transit
Once loaded, the carrier transports the vehicle according to its route and contacts you about delivery. The truck may be delayed by weather, traffic, mechanical problems, road restrictions, detention at other stops, or changes in carrier availability. Keep your phone available, provide a reliable alternate contact, and notify Montway promptly if your availability changes.

Transit time and pickup guarantees
Montway says a cross-country shipment can take up to two weeks, although many arrive sooner. The estimate begins with the actual carrier schedule and route, not simply the distance on a map.
Expedited service can provide a guaranteed pickup date. That guarantee concerns pickup, not an exact arrival time. Montway states that delivery dates remain estimates because conditions can change after the vehicle is collected.
Delivery: inspect before you sign
- Meet the trucker at the agreed location and ensure the area is safe for unloading.
- Inspect the car in daylight when possible, or use a strong light.
- Compare every panel, wheel, glass surface, accessory, and interior area with the pickup Bill of Lading and your photographs.
- Check the mileage and fuel level and confirm that the vehicle starts if it was running at pickup.
- Record any new damage, missing item, or mechanical issue on the delivery paperwork before signing.
- Take photographs of the condition and keep the signed copy.
Do not rely on a verbal promise that a discrepancy will be added later. The signed delivery record is the clearest evidence of the vehicle’s condition when the carrier handed it over.
Insurance and claims
Montway states that the assigned carrier’s cargo insurance covers the vehicle. It also describes contingent cargo insurance of up to $250,000 for qualifying claims when the carrier’s policy does not fully cover a valid claim. The stated limit is not an automatic payment and does not mean every type of loss is covered.
What to confirm before pickup
- The assigned carrier’s insurer and policy information
- Coverage limits and deductibles
- Exclusions for personal items, pre-existing damage, mechanical failure, acts of nature, or unattended belongings
- How and when to report a claim
- Which documents and photographs are required
If you find damage at delivery
Photograph the damage before moving the vehicle, write a precise description on the delivery Bill of Lading, and notify Montway and the carrier through the contact method in your shipment documents. Keep the pickup and delivery records, photos, repair estimates, and all correspondence. Follow the stated claim deadline; waiting can make a claim harder to evaluate.

Montway accepts major credit cards and PayPal for online payment, and cash at delivery. Its help-center guidance says cash bookings require a small partial payment, with the amount depending on shipment distance. Ask for the exact amount in the booking confirmation rather than assuming a standard deposit.

Common problems and how to prevent them
The truck cannot reach the address
Resolve access before pickup. Ask the trucker to approve a nearby wide, legal meeting point. Waiting until the truck arrives can cause a missed appointment or extra handling.
The vehicle’s condition differs from the quote
Tell Montway immediately if the car becomes inoperable, gains a roof attachment, receives oversized wheels, or otherwise changes. A carrier may need different equipment, and failing to disclose the change can delay loading.
Pickup is delayed
Contact the carrier first using the dispatch information, then Montway if you need help. Ask for a revised pickup window and document the communication. Standard pickup dates are windows, while expedited service may provide a guarantee under its terms.

Remove excess items before the trucker arrives. The stated allowance is up to 100 lb in one box or one piece of luggage in the trunk; belongings outside that arrangement may be refused or may not be covered.
A new mark appears at delivery
Do not sign a clean delivery record if you see new damage. Record the discrepancy on the Bill of Lading, photograph it, and start the claim process using the assigned carrier and Montway instructions.

Montway reports transporting more than 250,000 vehicles per year on its current service information. That company-reported volume does not remove the need to verify the specific carrier assigned to your order, its insurance, and the instructions in your shipment documents.
The most predictable experience comes from treating the quote as a detailed contract for a particular route and vehicle, allowing reasonable pickup flexibility, preparing the car carefully, and using the Bill of Lading at both ends. Open transport generally minimizes cost; enclosed transport buys additional protection; expedited service improves pickup-date certainty but cannot turn an estimated delivery into a guaranteed arrival time.
