The safest way to share a road with a self-driving truck is to drive as if it has the same physical limits as any tractor-trailer: stay out of blind spots, leave ample stopping space, pass deliberately, never cut in, and give turning trucks room. Automation may change who performs the driving task, but it does not make a truck shorter, lighter, or able to stop instantly. Follow directions from law-enforcement officers and emergency crews, and remember that automated driving is limited to the roads, weather, maps, and other conditions for which the system is designed.
What “self-driving truck” means on a U.S. road
“Self-driving” is not one capability. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) describes driving automation from Level 0 through Level 5. Levels 0–2 are driver-assistance systems: the human driver remains responsible and must stay fully engaged and attentive. At Level 3, the system can drive in defined conditions, but a driver must remain available to take over when requested. Level 4 can perform the driving task within a limited service area or other defined operating domain. Level 5 is designed for all roads and conditions.

NHTSA says Levels 3–5 are not available for consumer purchase. A truck you encounter may instead be part of a state-authorized test, research project, or commercial pilot operating only in particular places and conditions. A passenger car’s lane-centering, adaptive cruise control, or highway-assistance package does not make that car autonomous; the driver still has to monitor the road and operate the vehicle as required by its system.

| Level | Who performs the driving task? | Human availability | Where it can operate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Human; warnings may assist | Human drives continuously | Road and conditions selected by the driver |
| 1 | Human, with one assistance function | Human remains engaged | System’s limited lane or speed conditions |
| 2 | System controls steering and speed together | Human must supervise continuously | System-defined conditions |
| 3 | System, within its conditions | Driver must be available to take over | Specific operational design domain (ODD) |
| 4 | System within a defined service area | No takeover expected inside that ODD; a person may still be part of the operation | Limited roads, geography, speed, weather, or other conditions |
| 5 | System in all conditions for which the level is designed | No human driving role is specified | All roads and conditions in the design claim |
The table describes NHTSA’s consumer-facing definitions, not a label you can reliably infer from a truck’s appearance. Treat every automated truck as a large commercial vehicle with a specific, possibly narrow ODD. Do not assume it can handle every road, detour, work zone, or unusual event.

Why a large automated truck still needs room
FMCSA’s June 2020 safety tip sheet states: “Large trucks and buses—also known as commercial motor vehicles, or CMVs—have large blind spots, long stopping distances, and limited maneuverability.” Sensors and software do not remove those physical constraints. A truck can obscure a car from mirrors or cameras, need more distance to brake, and require extra lane width to turn.
FMCSA’s road-safety campaign says 12 million large trucks and buses are registered to operate on U.S. roadways. The page, last updated in 2024, does not identify the count’s underlying reference year, so it should not be read as a 2024 registration total. NHTSA recorded 39,254 people killed in U.S. motor-vehicle crashes in 2024; that is overall crash context, not a measure of autonomous-truck performance.
Automation status also does not tell you how a truck will react to a particular hazard. Its behavior depends on its ODD, sensing and control design, mapping, communications, and the people supporting the operation. Your job is not to diagnose those systems. Make your own movements predictable and leave a margin that accommodates a truck’s size and limited maneuverability.
How do I share the road safely with self-driving trucks?
Scan early and choose a position with an escape route
- Look well ahead for a truck’s lane position, turn signal, brake lights, hazard lights, escort vehicles, cones, or changing traffic patterns.
- Avoid lingering beside the trailer or cab. If you cannot see the truck’s mirrors, assume its operator or sensing system may not have a clear view of your car.
- Keep an open lane or shoulder-side space where lawful and safe. Do not move into a gap that would disappear if the truck brakes or changes lanes.
- Stay focused. Do not drive while impaired, fatigued, distracted, or engaged in an attempt to get the truck’s attention.
Make your intentions obvious
Use your turn signal before changing lanes, merging, or passing, and keep it on for the complete maneuver. Avoid abrupt speed changes. A truck’s system may be planning around the traffic it can see; a predictable lane change gives both the truck and nearby drivers more time to respond.

How do you pass a self-driving truck?
Use the same disciplined procedure recommended for any large truck. Pass only when the lane, sight distance, pavement, and traffic leave a genuine margin; never pass simply because you are curious about the automation.
- Check the entire pass. Confirm that the passing lane is open far enough ahead and behind, with no oncoming traffic, merge, intersection, work zone, or obstruction that would force you back early.
- Signal before moving out. Check mirrors and the blind area over your shoulder. Do not begin beside the truck’s front or rear wheels.
- Use the mirror rule. FMCSA advises that you should be able to see the truck driver in the truck’s mirror before passing. With an automated vehicle, there may not be a driver actively steering, so use the practical equivalent: do not pass until you have a clear view of the truck’s relevant mirrors or other unobstructed front-quarter area and can confirm your lane is clear.
- Pass promptly at a legal, steady speed. Do not sit alongside the truck, pace it, or repeatedly accelerate and brake. Keep watching the road rather than the truck’s equipment.
- Clear the front before returning. Signal, check your rear-view mirror, and wait until the entire truck is visible in that mirror before moving back. This leaves braking and sensor-detection space between your rear bumper and the truck’s front.
- Abort if conditions change. If traffic closes the gap, the truck signals, or you lose sight of the lane ahead, remain in the passing lane only as long as lawful and safe, then return when a complete maneuver is available. Never cut in to avoid missing an exit.
If the truck is passing you
Hold a steady lane and speed, keep both hands available, and avoid accelerating into the truck’s path. If wind, spray, or turbulence affects your car, reduce speed smoothly after the truck has cleared you and maintain your lane. Do not move toward the truck to “help” it pass.
Following, merging, and lane changes
Do not tailgate
A close following position places your car in a truck’s forward blind area and removes the distance needed if the truck brakes. Leave a generous, expanding gap in rain, darkness, congestion, downhill sections, or whenever you cannot see far ahead. If you cannot see the roadway beyond the truck, change lanes only when you can do so safely rather than moving closer for a better view.
Do not cut in
A small gap that looks adequate from your seat can be too short for a heavy vehicle to stop. After overtaking, wait for the truck to appear fully in your rear-view mirror before returning. Entering the lane immediately in front of the cab, especially before an exit or lane reduction, is one of the most avoidable ways to remove a truck’s safety margin.

Merge without forcing a decision
Match traffic speed where lawful, signal early, and select a gap that does not require the truck to brake or swerve. If the only available opening would put you beside the cab or trailer, continue to a safer gap. Never use an acceleration lane to race an automated truck or test whether it will yield.
What should I do if an autonomous truck is turning?
Expect a wide turn and a slow, deliberate path. A truck may move left before turning right, swing across more than one lane, or need space that a passenger car would not. The trailer can track inside the cab’s path and may cross the curb line.
- At a signal or stop sign, remain behind the stop line and out of the truck’s turning envelope.
- Do not squeeze between the truck and the curb, parked cars, a median, or a cyclist.
- Do not pass a turning truck on either side unless a police officer or other authorized traffic controller directs you and the path is clearly separated.
- Keep intersections clear. Stopping in the crosswalk or in front of the truck can block its turn and trap cross traffic.
- If the truck pauses, give it time. A pause may reflect its ODD, a sensor check, a pedestrian, or a required human intervention; it is not an invitation to drive around it.
Work zones, disabled vehicles, and emergency responders
Treat flashing lights, cones, arrow boards, smoke, debris, and people in the roadway as immediate hazards. Do not assume an automated truck will interpret an improvised detour or a hand signal exactly as a human driver would.

In a July 8, 2026 release, NHTSA reported documented incidents in which driverless automated vehicles interfered with emergency response. Administrator Jonathan Morrison’s headline stated: “An Automated Vehicle That Cannot Safely Interact With First Responders is a Danger to the General Public.” The incidents justify extra caution around any automated vehicle, but they are not a truck-specific crash or failure rate.

When responders are present
- Slow down well before the scene and expect sudden lane changes by responders, workers, or other drivers.
- Follow police, fire, highway-worker, or flagger instructions even if they conflict with the truck’s apparent path.
- Move over or change lanes as required by the law in your state, only after checking that the new lane is clear.
- Never stop where you block an ambulance route, fire apparatus, a responder’s view, or an escape path.
- Do not approach, film, signal to, or challenge the automated truck. Give it and the responders a wide, predictable path.
How human operators and automation may share the task
FMCSA explains that automated commercial-vehicle operations depend on the technology and the stage of the journey. A truck may have an onboard driver, a person available at a transition point, remote support, or another staffing arrangement. Operating domains, inspections, maintenance, training, qualifications, and human-operator responsibilities are part of fleet safety management.
FMCSA research identifies several human-ADS arrangements—including a driver and automated system working together, platoons, and remote operation—as subjects for continuing study. These arrangements should not be ranked as safer or less safe on the basis of the available material. For another road user, the practical rule is unchanged: do not try to communicate with the truck or infer its staffing from an empty-looking cab. Drive in a way that gives the vehicle time and space to follow its authorized procedures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How will I know automated driving systems are safe?
NHTSA’s consumer guidance distinguishes a system’s claimed capability from the conditions in which it is authorized to operate. Ask what ODD applies: the approved geography, roads, speeds, weather, visibility, construction conditions, and fallback process. A pilot that operates on mapped highways in clear weather has not demonstrated universal capability on every U.S. road.
Recommended Free Tools
Public-road testing and pilot permissions can vary by state. A truck’s markings, escort vehicle, or company announcement may identify a program, but they do not give you a special right to enter its path or expect it to yield. Do not treat the absence of an onboard driver as proof that the vehicle is Level 4 or Level 5, and do not treat a human in the cab as proof that automation is inactive.

Situations that require a different response
| Situation | Best response | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Truck ahead brakes or slows unexpectedly | Brake smoothly, increase your gap, and change lanes only after a full mirror and shoulder check. | Passing through a narrowing gap or braking while looking at the truck. |
| You are beside the trailer | Either accelerate steadily to clear it or fall back smoothly; choose the option with a complete, open lane. | Pacing the trailer or drifting toward it. |
| Truck signals a turn | Stay behind the stop line and wait outside the turning area. | Squeezing between the truck and curb or median. |
| Truck stops at a work zone | Follow signs and flaggers, leave room for a restart, and expect workers or equipment to move. | Driving around cones or assuming a stopped truck has yielded. |
| Emergency vehicle approaches | Clear a path as state law requires and follow responders’ directions. | Stopping in an intersection, blocking a shoulder, or trying to alert the truck. |
| Truck enters a road outside your expectations | Maintain distance and let it complete the maneuver; use another route only when safe and legal. | Testing whether the truck detects you. |
Guidance for cyclists and pedestrians
Large trucks have blind areas that can hide a bicycle, wheelchair, or pedestrian. Make eye contact only when a human operator is visibly able to provide it; do not rely on it as a guarantee from an automated system. At driveways, crossings, and corners, remain visible, avoid the inside of a turning truck, and wait until the full vehicle and trailer have cleared. A green signal does not remove the need to check for a turning truck or an instructed traffic stop.
A practical pre-trip checklist
- Are your mirrors clean and adjusted so you can monitor traffic behind and beside you?
- Can you identify a safe passing lane and an escape space before you move?
- Are you alert, unimpaired, and free from phone or navigation distractions?
- Have you allowed extra room for rain, darkness, hills, congestion, and work zones?
- Will your planned merge or lane change force the truck to brake?
- At an intersection, can the truck complete a wide turn without your car entering its path?
- If emergency lights or a flagger appear, do you know where you can legally move without blocking responders?
What this guidance does—and does not—establish
The precautions above apply the general FMCSA guidance for sharing U.S. roads with large commercial vehicles to trucks that use automated driving technology. They do not establish that autonomous trucks are safer or less safe than human-driven trucks, and the cited sources do not provide an autonomous-truck-specific comparative crash rate. They do establish a sound road-user strategy: respect the truck’s physical limits, stay predictable, and give people and automated systems enough time to respond.
State laws, pilot permissions, and traffic-control instructions can differ. When a police officer, firefighter, highway worker, or other authorized controller directs traffic, comply with that direction and use ordinary defensive-driving judgment.
