Stay out of blind spots, pass promptly on the left when legal and clear, leave a large gap before merging in, and do not tailgate. A truck marketed as “driverless” still operates only within a defined set of roads, speeds, weather and other conditions; it is not an all-road, all-weather guarantee.
This U.S.-focused guide explains what motorists can realistically observe, how to position a passenger vehicle, what automation terms mean, and where current federal and state rules leave uncertainty. The advice applies whether a remote operator, a safety driver or an automated driving system is controlling the semi.

The safest default: treat the semi as a large commercial truck
Size, mass and maneuvering limits create the main hazard. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) says large vehicles have blind spots, take longer to stop at the same speed and may swing wide when turning. Those properties do not change because a computer is performing the driving task.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Do not linger beside the trailer or cab. An adjacent vehicle can be difficult for the truck to detect or avoid if debris, a stopped car or another hazard appears.
- Keep a generous following distance. A loaded combination vehicle needs more stopping room than an empty one, and wet, icy or uneven pavement adds more distance.
- Never cut directly in front and brake for an exit. Move over only after you can see substantial pavement between your rear bumper and the truck’s front.
- Expect wide turns. A truck may move left before turning right, or need more than one lane to complete a turn. Do not squeeze through the opening.
- Read turn signals as an intention, not a guarantee of immediate movement. Wait until the truck has completed the maneuver and the lane is clear.
The California DMV’s simple blind-spot cue is: If you cannot see the truck’s side mirrors, the truck driver cannot see you.
It is a useful rule for human visibility, but it does not map every truck’s exact camera, radar or lidar coverage. A truck may detect something you cannot see, or fail to classify a vehicle that appears visible to you.

Understand what “driverless” actually describes
In federal terminology, an automated driving system (ADS) is intended to perform the entire dynamic driving task within a defined operational design domain (ODD) without human driver involvement. NHTSA describes this as the mature-state goal for SAE Levels 3 through 5. The ODD can limit operation by roadway type, mapped route, speed, weather, visibility, traffic situation or other conditions.
Level 2 driver assistance is different: the system may control steering and speed together, but the human driver must remain fully engaged, monitor the road and be ready to act. A vehicle with Level 2 assistance should not be treated as driverless.
| Automation category | Who performs the driving task? | Must a human stay engaged? | What a motorist should assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 2 assistance | System controls steering and/or speed while the driver supervises | Yes, continuously | There is a responsible, engaged driver, but normal truck blind spots and stopping limits still apply |
| ADS (Levels 3–5) | System performs the full driving task inside its ODD | Not while the system is operating within that ODD; fallback arrangements depend on the system and deployment | You cannot infer the active mode by looking at the cab; leave space and avoid relying on eye contact or gestures |
NHTSA’s definition and reporting rules are on its Standing General Order on Crash Reporting. A truck’s external appearance, lighting or lack of a visible driver does not tell you which automation level is active. Do not wave to the cab, seek eye contact or assume a camera has acknowledged you. Communicate through lawful lane position, speed and signals instead.
How to pass a driverless semi
Before you move left
- Check mirrors and the blind spot, signal early and confirm the passing lane is legal and open for the distance you need.
- Look for the truck’s front wheels, turn signal and lane position. A signal may indicate a planned lane change or turn; give it priority over your own schedule.
- Accelerate enough to pass decisively without exceeding the posted limit. Do not begin if traffic ahead will force you to slow while alongside.
While alongside
- Keep a steady path and avoid drifting toward the trailer. Cross the truck’s blind area as quickly as traffic and the speed limit safely allow.
- Do not ride beside the cab to test whether a camera sees you. The truck may need to maneuver around road debris, a pothole or an emergency vehicle.
- If wind, spray or turbulence affects control, ease off and drop behind rather than staying in the truck’s lateral zone.
After clearing the front
- Continue until you can see the truck’s headlights and a meaningful length of pavement in your interior mirror.
- Signal, return smoothly and leave a buffer. Do not merge and immediately brake for an exit or congestion.
- If the gap closes, remain in the passing lane until a safe opening appears; forcing the merge is more dangerous than missing an exit.
Passing on the left is the California DMV’s recommended practice when it is safe. Local law may restrict passing on grades, near intersections or in marked no-passing zones; obey the signs and pavement markings in the state where you are driving.
How to merge in front of one
On-ramps and lane drops create short gaps, but a short gap is not a reason to cut in. Match speed, signal and enter a space that lets the truck maintain its course without braking sharply.
- Use the ramp to build speed. Entering far below traffic speed can leave you trapped beside the trailer.
- Choose a gap with room to absorb braking. The California DMV gives an example of about 300 feet for an average passenger vehicle at 55 mph and up to 400 feet for a large vehicle at 55 mph. These are handbook examples, not universal engineering constants; greater speed, weight, a heavy load and poor surface conditions require more room.
- Do not merge and stop. If congestion forces a stop, keep the truck visible in your mirrors and avoid occupying the narrow space immediately ahead of its bumper.
- At a lane ending, alternate predictably. Signal, maintain a steady speed and merge when the lane ends rather than making several abrupt moves.

Following behind: choose a gap that can absorb a stop
Tailgating removes the time you need to see a hazard, react and brake. There is no single number that guarantees safety for every combination of speed, load, weather and road surface. Increase the gap at night, in rain or snow, on downhill grades, in construction zones and whenever spray or glare reduces visibility.
What to watch for
- Trailer brake lights can be partly hidden by spray, glare or an intervening vehicle.
- A truck may obscure stopped traffic, a lane closure or an object until you are close.
- At an intersection, the trailer can track differently from the cab; do not use the apparent path of the cab as permission to pass on the right.
If another vehicle fills the gap in front of you, ease off and rebuild distance. Do not respond by moving closer to the truck. When approaching a queue, brake early and leave an escape path to an adjacent open lane if one exists.
Turning, intersections and ramps
Right turns
A semi may swing left before turning right and may need the adjacent lane to keep the trailer wheels clear of the curb. Stay behind the trailer until the turn is complete. Never pass between the truck and the curb, sidewalk or a triangular island.
Left turns and opposing traffic
Do not assume a gap beside a turning truck is a passing lane. The trailer can cut across the apparent open space, and the cab may block your view of pedestrians or cyclists. Wait for a full view of the intersection and a legal, clearly marked lane.
Freeway entrances and exits
Plan early. Changing lanes directly in front of a truck to reach an exit leaves little stopping room and can force the truck to brake. If you cannot establish a safe gap, continue to the next exit rather than making a last-second move.
Weather, roadworks and the truck’s operating domain
An ADS is designed for an ODD, not every condition a human might encounter. A deployment may exclude heavy rain, snow, unplowed roads, unmarked lanes, construction shifts, flooded pavement or roads outside a mapped service area. The truck may slow, stop, request remote assistance or transition control according to its system design. None of those responses is guaranteed to be visible in advance.
- Increase following distance when spray hides lamps or lane markings.
- Expect a truck to reduce speed or occupy a lane while avoiding standing water, debris or temporary barriers.
- Do not pass on a shoulder or through a closed lane because the truck is moving slowly.
- Give stopped or disabled trucks a wide berth and follow emergency-vehicle and work-zone rules.
Because ODD boundaries differ by operator, route and software version, motorists should not assume that a truck approved for one highway or weather condition is approved everywhere else. State and local deployment rules also differ; there is no blanket authorization for driverless semis on every U.S. road.

What you can and cannot tell from the truck
External markings, a roof sensor, warning beacon or an empty-looking cab may indicate equipment, but they do not prove the system is controlling the vehicle at that moment. Conversely, a visible person in the cab does not prove the person is actively driving; the vehicle could be using assistance or ADS.

If the truck’s behavior conflicts with a signal, lane marking or right-of-way rule, yield when necessary and avoid escalating the situation. Call emergency services only for an immediate danger, crash or disabled vehicle; do not approach the truck to investigate its automation status.
Oversight and current U.S. rules
NHTSA’s automated-driving guidance covers heavy-duty vehicles and is voluntary. It does not remove the agency’s authority over defects, recalls or enforcement. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) remains the lead federal agency for commercial-motor-vehicle operational safety, including hours of service, inspections and hazardous materials, according to NHTSA’s agency FAQ. State agencies regulate licensing, traffic rules and many deployment details.
A narrow example illustrates why a notice must not be generalized. A Federal Register notice published October 9, 2026, granted Aurora and other motor carriers operating Level 4 ADS-equipped commercial vehicles a limited five-year exemption from specified warning-device placement, steady-burning-lamp and device-type/number requirements, with prior notice to FMCSA. It permits cab-mounted warning beacons instead of traditional warning devices. The exemption took effect October 7, 2026 and expires October 7, 2031. It is not a general permission for every driverless truck and does not change how a motorist should pass, merge or follow.

What crash data can—and cannot—tell you
NHTSA’s Standing General Order requires specified entities to report certain crashes when an ADS was in use within 30 seconds of a crash, with different criteria for Level 2 systems. The public dashboard data run through August 17, 2026, but NHTSA warns that duplicate reports may occur, automation types have sometimes been misclassified, and differences in telemetry and situational awareness make the data unsuitable as a statistically representative crash rate for all automated vehicles.
Those limitations are especially important for a truck-specific question: the dashboard does not establish a representative national driverless-semi risk estimate. NHTSA reports 39,254 people killed in all U.S. motor-vehicle crashes in 2024, but that broad figure is not evidence about driverless trucks.

If a driverless semi behaves unexpectedly
The truck slows or stops in a travel lane
Brake smoothly, turn on hazard flashers if you are stopping in traffic, and change lanes only after checking mirrors and blind spots. Do not use the shoulder unless directed by law enforcement or required to avoid an immediate collision.
The truck drifts toward your lane
Reduce speed and create lateral space. If the adjacent lane is clear, move away without racing the truck. Sound the horn briefly if needed to alert nearby road users, but do not assume the horn will trigger a particular automated response.
You encounter a stopped truck at night or in poor visibility
Slow before you reach it, scan for warning devices and people outside the vehicle, and follow work-zone or emergency-vehicle requirements. Keep your headlights on low beam when approaching traffic and avoid staring into reflective equipment.
A collision or debris blocks the road
Move to a safe location, call 911 for injuries or an active hazard, and provide your direction of travel and nearest landmark. Do not stand in a live lane or walk up to the truck’s cab to determine whether someone is inside.

A pre-trip checklist for sharing roads with large automated vehicles
- Set mirrors so the vehicle beside you is visible before it reaches your rear quarter.
- Keep phones and other distractions out of reach; automation in another vehicle does not compensate for your inattention.
- Identify a safe passing window before entering a truck’s blind spot.
- Signal early, maintain a steady speed and avoid abrupt braking after a merge.
- Increase the gap for speed, load, rain, snow, darkness, grades and poor pavement.
- Expect wide turns and allow the truck to complete them.
- Follow posted state and local restrictions; do not infer legality from a beacon, logo or empty cab.
Frequently asked questions
Should I drive differently if I cannot see a person in the cab?
No. Use the same space, passing and signaling practices. The absence of a visible driver does not tell you whether ADS is active, whether a remote operator is involved or what the system can detect.
Can I trust a truck to stop if I merge in front of it?
Never treat the truck’s automated capability as a substitute for a buffer. Merge only with enough distance to let the truck continue or stop without sharp braking, and do not slow immediately afterward.
Is there a national crash rate for driverless semi-trucks?
No representative national rate is established by the current public NHTSA dashboard. Reporting coverage, duplicate records, classification errors and telemetry differences limit what the data can show.
