Park the Equinox before pairing a phone, connecting a cable, or changing settings. The correct menus depend on the model year, trim, infotainment hardware, and phone. Identify your Equinox year first, then use that vehicle’s owner’s manual for the exact labels. The 2019–2022 vehicles described below use Bluetooth and, where equipped, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto; the redesigned 2025 Equinox adds an 11.3-inch infotainment screen with Google built-in and has different account and service requirements.
Start with the model year and equipment
There is no single Equinox infotainment procedure that applies to every year. Chevrolet’s 2019 guide, 2021 and 2022 owner’s manuals, and the announcement for the redesigned 2025 model describe different interfaces and capabilities. A feature can also be conditional on trim or equipment, so a missing icon does not automatically indicate a fault.

What to check before touching the screen
- Read the model-year information on the vehicle paperwork, driver-door label, or registration.
- Check whether the vehicle has the projection feature you want. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not guaranteed on every Equinox configuration.
- Note whether your phone is an iPhone or Android device and whether it has a current operating system supported by the phone-projection feature.
- Locate the USB port intended for data. A charging-only port will not provide the wired projection workflow described in the 2022 manual.
- Keep the exact owner’s manual open for your year. Screen names, icon positions, and whether a feature is listed as “if equipped” can change between model years.
Do all setup while stationary. Chevrolet’s 2019 infotainment guide states that Bluetooth pairing is disabled while the vehicle is moving. Once the phone is configured, use voice controls or steering-wheel controls where available rather than handling the phone on the road.

Understand the three phone connections
Bluetooth pairing, wired phone projection, and the 2025 Google built-in system are related but not interchangeable.

Pairing a phone over Bluetooth does not by itself create a CarPlay or Android Auto session. Conversely, a projection connection may handle calls and media without making every Bluetooth phone-book function available. Set up the connection that matches the way you drive.
Pair a phone over Bluetooth
The following menu path is documented for the 2019 Equinox. Later years may use different wording, so treat it as a year-specific example rather than a universal path.
2019 Equinox pairing from the screen
- Park the vehicle and switch the infotainment system on.
- On the Equinox screen, open Phone, choose Connect Phones, and select Add Phone.
- On the phone, open Bluetooth settings and select the vehicle name shown by the infotainment system.
- Compare the pairing code shown on both devices, approve the request, and accept the prompts for contacts or call history if you want those functions.
- Wait for the vehicle to finish connecting before leaving the Bluetooth screen. Depending on the phone, a phone book may download; that download is not guaranteed for every device.
2019 Equinox pairing by voice command
With the vehicle parked, press the steering-wheel voice-recognition button and say “Pair phone.” Follow the prompts on the infotainment display and phone. If the voice prompt is not recognized, use Phone > Connect Phones > Add Phone instead.
Chevrolet’s 2019 guide summarizes the prerequisite this way: “Before using a Bluetooth-enabled device in the vehicle, it must be paired with the in-vehicle Bluetooth system.” A paired phone can still have limited capabilities if its Bluetooth profile or operating system does not support a particular function.

Choose Bluetooth audio after pairing
To stream music on the cited 2019 interface, open the audio source list and select Audio, then Bluetooth. Start playback from the phone only after the vehicle reports that the device is connected. If calls work but music does not, return to the phone’s Bluetooth device settings and check that media audio is enabled, then select Bluetooth as the vehicle’s current source.
When to remove and re-pair
Delete the old vehicle entry from the phone and the old phone entry from the Equinox when a previously paired phone will not connect, when several obsolete phones compete for priority, or after a phone name or operating-system update. Then repeat the parked pairing procedure. Do not repeatedly tap pairing controls while driving; the system may intentionally block the operation.
Connect Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on supported Equinox models
The 2022 owner’s manual describes a wired setup. It requires a compatible phone connected to a USB data port. Chevrolet recommends the phone’s factory-provided USB cable and warns that some third-party cables may not work. A cable that only supplies power can charge the phone while leaving the projection icons inactive.
Prepare the phone and cable
- Use the phone’s factory-provided cable when possible. Chevrolet says a significantly worn cable should be replaced to maintain connection quality.
- Use the Equinox USB port identified for data in the vehicle’s manual, not a port intended only for charging.
- Unlock the phone before the first connection and leave it available for consent prompts.
- For Android Auto, install or update the Android Auto app if your phone and the 2022 manual require it. Apple CarPlay does not require a separate app according to that manual.
First connection on the 2022 workflow
- Park the Equinox, start the infotainment system, and connect the phone to the USB data port with the compatible cable.
- Accept the terms, consent, and setup prompts on the vehicle screen.
- Read and accept the corresponding prompts on the phone. Keep the phone unlocked long enough for the initial authorization to complete.
- Wait for the CarPlay or Android Auto icon to become active. Projection may launch automatically.
- If it does not launch, return to the vehicle’s Home Page and tap the relevant Apple CarPlay or Android Auto icon.
- Confirm that the projected map, phone, and media controls respond before selecting a route or playlist. Finish all typing and account sign-ins while parked.
The 2022 manual’s cable guidance is explicit: “For best performance, it is highly recommended to use the device’s factory-provided USB cable, which should be replaced after significant wear to maintain connection quality.” This is a recommendation for the documented wired setup, not a promise that every Equinox supports wireless projection.

CarPlay and Android Auto are conditional features
Projection depends on the vehicle’s equipment and the phone’s compatibility. A gray or missing icon can mean the trim does not include the feature, the phone is not compatible, the cable is power-only or damaged, the port is not a data port, or projection has been disabled in settings. Check those possibilities before treating the screen as defective.
Allow or restore phone projection in the settings
The 2021 Equinox manual documents a first-use Device Projection Privacy Consent prompt. Choose the option that permits projection if you want CarPlay or Android Auto. Choosing to disable projection prevents the icons from launching until the setting is changed.
Check the projection setting on the cited 2021 interface
- Park the vehicle and open Home.
- Select Settings, then Apps.
- Locate the CarPlay or Android Auto projection control and make sure the desired service is enabled.
- Reconnect the phone to the USB data port and accept any consent prompts again.
Exact labels can differ in other years. If your screen does not show these entries, use the owner’s manual for that year rather than guessing at a hidden menu.

Once the phone connection works, configure the audio controls while parked so you are not searching through menus later. Chevrolet’s 2022 manual recommends setting up audio by presetting favorite stations, setting the tone, and adjusting the speakers.

Save stations and adjust the sound
- Select the radio source used most often.
- Tune to a station and save it to an available preset location. Repeat for the stations you regularly use.
- Open the tone or equalizer controls and set bass, midrange, and treble to a comfortable level.
- Adjust speaker balance or fade if your interface provides those controls. A centered setting is a practical starting point for a single driver; passengers may prefer a different balance.
- Play a familiar track at a moderate volume and verify that the saved settings remain after switching sources.
Use Bluetooth audio without projection
If you only need music and hands-free calls, select the paired phone as the Bluetooth audio source. This avoids plugging in the phone for the documented projection features. The available controls may be more limited than the projected interface, and contact or message functions depend on the phone.
Prepare phone numbers and contacts
The 2022 manual recommends setting up phone numbers in advance for one-control or voice-command access. Add frequently called contacts to the phone first, allow contact sharing during Bluetooth pairing if you are comfortable doing so, and verify that the vehicle displays the names correctly. Do this before driving; do not enter numbers manually on the road.
Daily-use routine after setup
A short routine prevents most interruptions:
- Before moving, connect the phone if you use wired projection and place it where the cable will not interfere with the shifter, pedals, or steering wheel.
- Confirm the intended audio source and volume while still parked.
- Use steering-wheel controls or voice commands for calls, media, and navigation once underway.
- If the phone disconnects, pull over before inspecting the cable or changing settings.
- Keep a backup route or phone number available if a phone, network, or projection service becomes unavailable.
These habits matter because Bluetooth pairing and projection are convenience features, not substitutes for safe driving. The vehicle’s controls can reduce phone handling, but they do not make typing or troubleshooting while moving safe.

The vehicle cannot find the phone
- Park and make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone.
- Open the vehicle’s phone menu and start a new pairing session instead of waiting for an old connection.
- Turn the phone’s Bluetooth off and on, then search again.
- Delete an obsolete phone from the Equinox if its connection list is full or another phone is connecting first.
- Restart the phone only after stopping in a safe place.
Calls work but music does not
Call audio and media audio use different Bluetooth functions. Check the phone’s settings for the Equinox and enable media audio, then choose Bluetooth as the active source in the vehicle. If the phone is connected to another speaker or headset, disconnect that device.

CarPlay or Android Auto stays gray
- Confirm that the Equinox trim supports projection and that the desired service is enabled in the vehicle settings.
- Use the USB data port identified by the manual.
- Replace a worn or damaged cable with the phone’s factory-provided cable, as Chevrolet recommends for the 2022 procedure.
- Unlock the phone and respond to all consent prompts.
- For Android Auto, verify the required app is installed and current for your phone.
- Disconnect other USB devices temporarily and reconnect the phone by itself.
Projection worked once and then stopped
Check whether the phone’s permissions changed after an operating-system update. Reopen the vehicle’s projection setting, remove the vehicle from the phone’s saved CarPlay or Android Auto devices if necessary, and reconnect while parked. A damaged cable can produce intermittent operation, especially when the phone charges but the projection interface disappears.
The phone book or contacts are incomplete
Contact downloads vary by phone. Confirm that contact sharing was approved, that the desired contacts are stored on the phone, and that the phone is connected as the active device. Some devices support calls but not every contact or message feature. Use the phone manufacturer’s compatibility information and the Equinox manual for the exact year if the limitation persists.
What changes on the redesigned 2025 Equinox
Chevrolet’s 2024 announcement for the redesigned 2025 Equinox describes an 11.3-inch diagonal infotainment screen and Google built-in. That is a different technology story from the older Bluetooth-and-phone-projection menus. The announcement presents Google built-in for maps, media, and connected services integrated into the vehicle system.

Google built-in is not the same as phone projection
With Google built-in, some functions run through the vehicle’s infotainment system rather than mirroring a phone. You should still identify the exact trim and read the 2025 owner’s manual before following a menu path. Do not assume that a 2019–2022 Home Page or Apps path appears on the redesigned display.
Accounts, plans, and location affect availability
Chevrolet’s announcement footnotes say functionality varies by model, infotainment system, and location. Select connected services require a plan, and some actions may require a linked account. Therefore, the presence of Google built-in does not mean every service is included indefinitely, available in every market, or usable without account setup. Complete account linking and service enrollment while parked and verify the terms shown for your vehicle and region.

Before you drive: final setup checklist
- Safety: The Equinox is parked before pairing, consenting, entering information, or changing settings.
- Year: You have identified the model year and are using that year’s owner’s manual for screen-specific instructions.
- Bluetooth: The phone is paired, the desired call permissions are approved, and Bluetooth audio is selected when needed.
- Projection: CarPlay or Android Auto is supported, enabled, and tested with a compatible phone and USB data cable where the vehicle uses wired projection.
- Audio: Favorite stations, tone, speaker balance, and a comfortable starting volume are set.
- Contacts: Frequently used numbers are stored and voice access works without manual typing.
- 2025 services: Google built-in account and plan requirements have been checked for the vehicle’s location and trim.
- Recovery: You know where to pull over if a cable, phone, or projection session fails.
When the owner’s manual is the deciding source
Official instructions currently document specific Equinox years rather than every trim, market, and phone combination. Use the manual supplied with your vehicle whenever a label, icon, port, or feature differs from the procedures above. This is especially important for the redesigned 2025 Equinox, whose newest manual and connected-service availability may vary by configuration and location. The safest setup is the one completed while parked, verified on your exact vehicle, and simple enough to operate through the steering-wheel controls once you start driving.
