How to Set Up Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Safely Before Your First Drive

A practical, safety-first guide to preparing Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised), choosing a simple route, verifying activation and practicing takeovers before your first drive.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up Full Self-Driving (Supervised) while the Tesla is parked, confirm that your vehicle and region are eligible, clean every camera, buckle in, choose the most conservative available driving profile, and begin on a familiar road in clear conditions. After activation, a blue steering-wheel icon and blue route line indicate that the system is engaged. You remain responsible for speed, steering and every decision, and must be ready to take over immediately.

What must be true before you try Full Self-Driving

Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is a driver-assistance feature, not autonomous driving. Availability and controls vary with the vehicle’s configuration, Autopilot hardware, software version, model year, trim and region. Do not assume that a Tesla with the same model name as another car has the same menu or activation control.

Check What to verify Why it matters on a first drive
Eligibility Full Self-Driving (Supervised) appears in the vehicle’s controls and is available for that vehicle, software version and region. A feature may be unavailable even when another Tesla has it.
Software Install applicable updates; Tesla recommends keeping an eligible trial vehicle connected to Wi‑Fi. Controls and feature availability can depend on software.
Driver position You are seated in the driver’s seat and the driver’s seat belt is buckled. Tesla’s Model S Owner’s Manual says FSD will not activate without these conditions.
Vehicle state For Model 3, the car is in Park when you enable or disable FSD. The Model 3 manual requires Park for those changes.
Camera view Every camera is clean and unobstructed. Obscured cameras can make the feature unavailable or require an immediate takeover.
Road and weather The route is familiar, well marked, lightly trafficked and visible. Construction, narrow roads and complex intersections demand more frequent intervention.

Check your exact manual, not a generic video

Open the on-screen Owner’s Manual in the Tesla and search for Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla’s manuals differ by model, equipment and software. The manual is the authoritative source for your steering-wheel controls, gear selector, lighting requirements and any model-specific limitations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand trial eligibility

Tesla’s new-owner information describes a 30-day trial for eligible new owners. Eligibility varies by model and trim, so the presence of a trial offer is not proof that every Tesla qualifies. Treat the trial exactly like a purchased feature: the driver must supervise continuously and remain responsible for the car.

This is normal and does not indicate a product defect. Please see our dedicated crease recovery video in the main product video section for step-by-step instructions. Prepare the Tesla while it is parked

1. Enable the feature and accept the agreement

On Model 3, use Controls > Self-Driving > Full Self-Driving (Supervised), then read and accept the user agreement. The Model 3 manual says the vehicle must be in Park to enable or disable FSD. Other models may expose the same function through a different menu, so follow the controls shown in your car’s manual.

Do this before pulling away. Changing settings while moving creates an unnecessary distraction and may not be permitted by the vehicle.

2. Clean every camera

Tesla instructs owners to check the cameras before each drive and before using FSD. Inspect the lenses and their immediate viewing areas for dirt, water, snow, ice or anything else that blocks the image. A clean microfiber cloth is a practical way to wipe the lens surface. Do not cover, tape, relocate or modify a camera.

If a camera becomes obscured during the drive, take control immediately. Do not wait for the system to recover while the car is moving through traffic.

3. Set your seating position and restraint

Sit in the driver’s seat, adjust the seat and mirrors so you can see normally, and buckle the driver’s seat belt. Tesla’s Model S manual specifically states that FSD requires the driver to be seated and belted. Your hands, posture and view must let you take over without delay.

4. Set the headlights as your manual requires

Use the headlight setting specified by your model’s Owner’s Manual—typically On or Auto where required. Lighting affects what you can see and what the vehicle’s cameras can observe, particularly at dusk, at night or in poor visibility.

Choose settings that reduce workload on the first drive

Use the most conservative Speed Profile

Tesla describes profiles ranging from slower driving with fewer lane changes to faster driving with more frequent lane changes. Chill is the conservative example; Hurry and Mad Max represent progressively more assertive behavior where available. For a first familiarization drive, select the slower profile rather than testing the system’s most aggressive behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Profile choice Behavior Tesla associates with it First-drive decision
Chill Slower, with fewer lane changes. Best starting point while you learn the system’s prompts and takeover feel.
Hurry or Mad Max Faster, with more frequent lane changes. Leave for later; it increases the number of decisions you must monitor.

The exact profile names and available choices can vary by vehicle and software. Select only what your screen presents.

Review Brake Confirm

Some vehicles provide a Brake Confirm option. Read its on-screen description and decide whether you want an additional confirmation step before the car proceeds in situations covered by that setting. The available behavior is model- and software-dependent; do not assume another Tesla’s setting works the same way.

Review HOV-lane use

If your vehicle offers an HOV-lane preference, check it before entering a route that includes those lanes. Only use an HOV lane when you meet the applicable occupancy and local road rules. FSD does not transfer legal responsibility for lane restrictions to the car.

Choose an uncomplicated first route

Your first drive should be a controlled introduction, not a test of the most difficult roads. Choose a route you already know, with clear lane markings, good visibility and light traffic. Plan enough time that you are not rushing to an appointment or trying to learn controls while navigating an unfamiliar area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tesla’s manuals warn that driver intervention may be required on narrow roads with oncoming cars, in construction zones and at complex intersections. Blind corners, crossing intersections and oncoming vehicles deserve the same caution. For the first activation, avoid those conditions when you can. If your planned route immediately includes a work zone, an unprotected merge or a complicated junction, choose another route or drive manually.

Activate FSD and verify that it is actually engaged

  1. Remain parked and prepare navigation. Enter the destination before moving. Check that the route shown is the simple route you intended to drive.
  2. Start Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Press and hold Start FSD (Supervised) on the screen, or use the model-specific steering-wheel control described in your Owner’s Manual.
  3. Confirm the visual indicators. Look for the blue steering-wheel icon and a blue route line. These indicators show that FSD is active; do not rely on a sound or assumption alone.
  4. Scan the road before releasing your attention to the system. Check for pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, lane closures and anything the cameras may not classify correctly. You are still the driver even when the indicators are blue.
  5. Begin only when you can supervise continuously. Keep your eyes on the road and your hands and body ready to steer. If the indicators do not appear or the feature becomes unavailable, drive manually.

Tesla’s U.S. support page states that FSD can be engaged at speeds below 85 mph. That is an engagement limit described for the U.S. page, not a recommended speed and not permission to exceed a posted limit or local law.

Supervise every second after activation

“None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.”

Tesla’s support statement is the central safety rule. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) can steer, change lanes and manage parts of a route, but the driver remains responsible for speed and control at all times. Watch traffic, lane markings, signals and road users rather than watching the center display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Respond to attention prompts

The cabin camera monitors attentiveness. Respond promptly when the car asks you to pay attention. Repeatedly ignoring prompts can escalate the warnings and disable FSD for the rest of that drive. A disabled feature is a reason to continue manually, not to search for a way around the monitoring.

Do not use a handheld phone or any device intended to defeat attentiveness monitoring. Tesla warns that such behavior can lead to suspension or permanent loss of the feature.

Expect the system to need help

Tesla’s Model S Owner’s Manual says: “Full Self-Driving (Supervised) requires you to pay attention to the road and be ready to take over at all times.” Treat every blind corner, lane closure, narrow section, unusual vehicle movement and complicated intersection as a point where you may need to intervene.

Practice taking over before you enter traffic

Tesla recommends practicing disengagement in a safe environment without other road users. Learn the response while the car is stationary or in a controlled, empty area permitted for that practice. Do not create a practice exercise on a public road with traffic around you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know the takeover methods for your equipment

  • Brake pedal: Press the brake to disengage.
  • Gear stalk: On vehicles equipped with the applicable stalk, move it upward as described in the manual.
  • Right scroll wheel: On vehicles equipped with that control, press the right scroll wheel.
  • Manual steering: Take over and steer the car yourself.

The available method depends on the model and equipment. Confirm the control in your own manual before driving. When you take over, continue scanning the road; disengagement is not a substitute for braking for an immediate hazard.

Practice the decision, not just the button

Before entering a busier road, identify where you would move if the car hesitated, approached a blocked lane or misjudged another road user. Your goal is to recognize the need for intervention early, choose a safe path and use the control you already tested. If you are uncertain which control disengages your car, do not activate FSD in traffic yet.

Situations that commonly require intervention

Tesla explicitly warns that intervention may be required in several road situations:

  • Narrow roads with oncoming cars.
  • Construction zones and temporary lane arrangements.
  • Complex intersections.
  • Blind corners where traffic or pedestrians are hidden from view.
  • Crossing intersections and unusual right-of-way situations.
  • Oncoming vehicles or other road users whose movement is difficult to predict.

These are not exhaustive boundaries. A clear blue indicator does not mean the road is safe to delegate. If the system’s path, speed or lane position conflicts with what you see, take over immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot a feature that will not activate

The FSD control is missing

Check the vehicle’s eligibility, region, trim, model year, hardware and software version. Open the on-screen Owner’s Manual for the current controls and install applicable updates. If the vehicle is in an eligible trial, keep it connected to Wi‑Fi as Tesla recommends for applicable updates. A 30-day trial description applies only to eligible new owners and does not override model or trim restrictions.

The vehicle is ready but activation is refused

Confirm that you are in the driver’s seat, the driver’s seat belt is buckled and, on Model 3, the vehicle is in Park while enabling or disabling the feature. Check that the cameras are clean and unobstructed. Verify any headlight requirement in your model’s manual. If the car reports that the feature is unavailable, take control and continue manually rather than repeatedly attempting activation while moving.

The feature disengages during the drive

Look for an attention prompt, a camera-obstruction warning or another vehicle message. Respond to prompts, clean the cameras only when safely parked, and take over immediately whenever the feature becomes unavailable. Repeated ignored attentiveness warnings can disable FSD for the remainder of the drive.

You are unsure whether it is active

Do not infer activation from navigation alone. Verify the blue steering-wheel icon and blue route line. If either expected indicator is absent, assume you are driving manually and keep full control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for model, software and regional differences

There is no single universal FSD setup sequence for every Tesla. The menu label, steering-wheel control, gear-stalk behavior, available profiles, Brake Confirm, HOV preference and lighting requirement can vary with model, trim, hardware, software version and region. Use the controls displayed by your vehicle and the corresponding Owner’s Manual rather than instructions recorded for another model.

The 85-mph engagement figure comes from Tesla’s U.S. support page and should not be generalized to every country. Local speed limits, lane rules and road markings still apply. Likewise, a trial offer described on Tesla’s new-owner page is region- and vehicle-dependent.

Go or no-go decision before moving

Do not start the first drive until you can answer yes to all of these questions: Is the feature available for this vehicle and software? Is the car prepared while parked? Are the cameras clean? Are you seated and belted? Do you know which visual indicators confirm activation? Have you selected a simple route and a conservative profile? Can you disengage using a control you have practiced? If any answer is no, postpone activation and drive manually until that item is resolved.

Once you do begin, keep supervising as if no automation were present. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is an aid that can require immediate correction; it never replaces the attentive driver.
