How to Set Up Suspension on a Middleweight Adventure Motorcycle

A step-by-step method to measure sag, adjust preload, identify a mismatched spring and tune damping for pavement, gravel and loaded adventure riding.

Set up a middleweight adventure motorcycle in this order: measure sag with the actual rider and load, correct ride height with spring preload, decide whether the spring rate is appropriate, then tune compression and rebound damping in small, recorded steps. A useful starting point for adventure and touring bikes is 30–40 mm of rear rider sag and 10–15 mm of rear static sag, but the owner’s manual and suspension supplier’s specification for your exact model and year take priority.

The same procedure works for pavement, gravel and two-up travel. What changes is the load and the damping compromise—not the measurement method. Save separate settings for solo riding, luggage and passenger use, and restore the appropriate setting before each trip.

Why suspension setup starts with sag

Sag is the amount the suspension compresses under the motorcycle’s own weight and the weight of the riding combination. It establishes ride height and how much compression and rebound travel remain available. If ride height is wrong, changing clickers can hide a symptom without fixing the underlying spring or payload mismatch.

Rear rider sag of 30–40 mm and static sag of 10–15 mm are published by MotoGeneration in 2026 as a starting range for adventure and touring motorcycles. They are not a universal specification: use your motorcycle’s manual and the suspension manufacturer’s target when those figures differ. Front-suspension targets are also model-specific, so do not copy the rear numbers to the fork.

A 2018 Touratech-USA technical guide calls accurate sag measurement the single most important factor in an ideal ADV suspension setup. That priority is practical: sag is measurable, repeatable and directly affected by rider, fuel, luggage and passenger weight.

Prepare the motorcycle and record its baseline

Use the load you actually intend to tune

Wear your normal riding gear, including boots and a helmet. Add the fuel level, panniers, top case, camping equipment and other luggage you normally carry. For a two-up setting, include the passenger and the passenger’s gear. A setting measured with an empty bike will not represent a loaded trip.

Gather the right equipment

  • A stable motorcycle stand that fully unloads the wheel being measured.
  • A metric sag tape or a steel rule long enough to reach the chosen reference points.
  • A helper to hold the motorcycle upright and read the measurement.
  • A notebook or phone record of every measurement and adjuster position.
  • A flat-head clicker screwdriver if your adjusters require one.

Keep the motorcycle on a level surface. Confirm that the stand is secure before working around the wheels, and never rely on a side stand for a fully extended measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down the factory settings

Before turning an adjuster, record the owner’s-manual baseline, preload position and every compression or rebound click. Some manuals specify a number of turns, some use clicks from fully closed or fully open, and some use a visible collar position. Record the method as well as the number. Click directions and adjuster ranges differ by model.

Measure rear and front sag step by step

1. Measure fully extended length

  1. Put the motorcycle on a stand so the wheel is unloaded and the suspension is fully extended.
  2. At the rear, measure from the rear axle center to a repeatable fixed point on the tail or bodywork directly above it. Mark the reference point if necessary. Call this dimension L1.
  3. At the front, use a repeatable fork reference specified by your manual. Measure with the fork fully extended and record the dimension as the front extended reference.

Do not change the reference points between measurements. A different bodywork edge or ruler angle can create an apparent sag change that is only a measuring error.

2. Measure static sag

  1. Lower the motorcycle and hold it upright with no rider. Keep the wheels in line and let the suspension settle naturally without bouncing it.
  2. Have the helper hold the bike vertically while you measure the same rear points. Record this as L2.
  3. Calculate rear static sag as L1 − L2. Repeat the settle-and-measure process until the readings are consistent.
  4. Repeat the same process at the fork using the front reference points.

3. Measure rider sag

  1. Put on all riding gear and add the selected luggage, fuel and passenger combination.
  2. Sit in the normal riding position with both feet on the foot pegs. Do not support yourself with a foot on the ground or lean against the helper.
  3. Have the helper hold the motorcycle upright while the suspension settles. Measure the rear points again and record this as L3.
  4. Calculate rear rider sag as L1 − L3. Repeat for the front.

Take at least two readings. If they disagree, check that the motorcycle was vertical, the suspension was allowed to settle and the tape touched exactly the same points.

Interpret the measurements before adjusting anything

Measurement What it represents How to use it
Fully extended length (L1) Wheel unloaded on a secure stand Reference for both sag calculations
Static sag (L1 − L2) Compression from the motorcycle’s own weight Helps show whether the spring is in a sensible range before the rider sits on the bike
Rider sag (L1 − L3) Compression with the complete riding load Compare with the model-specific target; rear adventure starting range is 30–40 mm

If rider sag is outside the target, use preload first. A 2024 KTM 890 Adventure R manual describes its preload recommendations as guidelines and says the best setting accounts for rider, luggage and passenger weight. It also warns that incorrect settings can deteriorate handling, particularly at high speed. Treat those warnings as a reason to make changes methodically, not as a reason to copy KTM’s values to another motorcycle.

Adjust spring preload, then measure again

Preload changes the installed position of the spring. It changes ride height and the amount of available compression and rebound travel; it does not change the spring’s rate. Adjust preload in small steps and repeat the sag measurement after every change.

Fork preload

If the fork has preload adjusters, change the left and right legs equally unless the manufacturer explicitly specifies another procedure. Use the scale or turn count in the manual. Unequal settings can create an unintended difference between fork legs.

Shock preload

A rear shock may use a hydraulic remote adjuster or a threaded spring collar. Turn a hydraulic adjuster only within its marked range. For a collar, use the correct tool and avoid damaging the locking rings. Record the number of turns, visible threads or hydraulic clicks after each change.

More preload generally raises the loaded ride height by reducing spring compression at rest; less preload lowers it. Do not use extreme preload simply to force a mismatched spring into a target range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know when the spring rate is wrong

After reasonable preload adjustments, compare the measured sag with the motorcycle’s target. If the adjuster is near its limit and sag still misses the range, the spring rate or the total payload is wrong. Fit a correctly rated replacement spring rather than attempting to mask the mismatch with heavy damping.

  • Too much sag with preload nearly maxed: the spring is likely too soft for the rider and load, or the payload is beyond the motorcycle’s intended range.
  • Too little sag with preload almost backed off: the spring is likely too stiff for the load, or the motorcycle is carrying very little weight.
  • Static sag is abnormal while rider sag is forced into range: the preload position may be compensating for an unsuitable spring. Ask a suspension supplier to verify the rate.

Check the motorcycle’s maximum loading information before adding luggage or a passenger. A new spring cannot make an overloaded chassis, wheel or tire safe.

Set damping only after sag is correct

Compression damping

Compression damping controls resistance as the suspension compresses. More compression damping slows compression; less allows the suspension to compress more quickly. It can influence bottoming and support, but it cannot correct a spring that is too soft or a rider sag measurement that is wrong.

Rebound damping

Rebound damping controls how quickly the suspension extends after compression. More rebound damping slows extension; less allows a quicker return. Excessive rebound can prevent the suspension from recovering between successive bumps, while too little can allow a quick extension that feels uncontrolled.

A repeatable clicker method

  1. Start at the owner’s-manual comfort or standard baseline after setting sag.
  2. Count from the specified stop using the manufacturer’s method. Never assume that “clockwise” or “clicks out” means the same thing on another model.
  3. Change only one adjuster by one or two clicks.
  4. Ride the same short section at a controlled speed, using the same line and load.
  5. Record the change and the result before touching another adjuster.

Do not loosen, remove or disassemble a pressurized shock to make a clicker adjustment. Clickers are external adjusters; internal shock service requires the proper equipment and a qualified technician.

Choose a setting for each load

Load What to change first What to verify
Solo, minimal luggage Measure sag with your normal gear and set preload to the solo target Steering remains neutral and the bike does not feel nose-high or tail-low at low speed
Solo with camping luggage Add the complete luggage before measuring; increase preload only as needed Rider sag remains in range and the shock does not bottom on the test route
Passenger plus luggage Measure with both people and all gear; use the hydraulic adjuster or collar within its range Braking, steering, chain clearance and tire contact remain normal

Save each configuration as a simple note, such as “solo,” “solo plus panniers” and “two-up.” Include preload position and compression and rebound clicks. Restore the appropriate note before a trip, then perform a short low-speed confirmation ride.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Tune for the surface you ride

Pavement

Use the manual’s standard or comfort baseline as the starting point. A controlled test on familiar pavement makes it easier to identify a change in steering, braking support or wallow. Do not chase a single rough patch with a large clicker change.

Graded gravel

Keep the sag target appropriate for the load and make small damping changes. The goal is a controlled response over corrugations without using so much rebound damping that the suspension rides lower through a series of bumps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rough off-road terrain

Confirm that the spring and sag are correct before reducing damping. Less damping can allow quicker movement over repeated edges, but too little control can produce bottoming or an unsettled chassis. Test at low speed in a safe area.

Use symptoms to choose the next adjustment

Symptom Checks before changing damping Small test change
Bottoming Verify rider sag, payload and spring rate; inspect for a mechanical problem If sag and spring are correct, add one or two clicks of compression damping and retest. Do not use damping to conceal a soft spring.
Topping out or a sharp extension Check that rebound is not set too lightly and that the wheel is not losing contact from an incorrect ride height Add one or two clicks of rebound damping, then repeat the same section.
Wallowing or delayed recovery Check sag and confirm that the load has not changed Add one or two rebound clicks and test for improved control without harshness.
Harsh response on small edges Check excessive preload, tire pressure and compression setting Reduce compression damping one or two clicks if the manual permits, then test at the same speed.
Packing down in successive bumps Look for suspension that remains compressed because rebound is too slow Reduce rebound damping one or two clicks and verify that the chassis returns between bumps.

These are diagnostic starting points, not guaranteed cures. A worn component, incorrect tire pressure, damaged linkage or leaking seal can imitate a damping problem. Stop tuning and inspect the motorcycle if a new noise, oil leak or sudden loss of control appears.

Account for the motorcycle’s adjuster hardware

Middleweight adventure motorcycles do not share one suspension layout. Some have separate fork compression and rebound adjusters; others provide one or neither. Rear shocks may have a compression adjuster, a rebound adjuster, a hydraulic preload knob or only a threaded collar. Identify which adjuster you are turning from the manual, not from its appearance.

Exact click counts are model- and year-specific. KTM’s 2024 890 Adventure R recommendations are an example for that motorcycle, not a universal recipe for every middleweight ADV bike. Count clicks from the specified stop, write down the original position and stay within the published range.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Safety checks after every major change

  1. Ride slowly in a safe, open area before returning to traffic or high-speed roads.
  2. Apply the brakes progressively and confirm that the motorcycle remains stable and tracks straight.
  3. Check steering effort and low-speed balance for an unexpected nose-high or tail-low attitude.
  4. Inspect chain clearance, suspension travel and tire contact with the new load and ride height.
  5. Look for interference between luggage, bodywork, the tire and the suspension through the available travel.
  6. Recheck fasteners, adjuster positions and sag if the result feels different from the recorded setting.

The KTM 890 Adventure R manual specifically advises riding slowly after preload changes. The same practice is sensible on any motorcycle because a changed ride height can alter steering and braking feel.

Keep a setup record that you can reproduce

For each configuration, record the date, fuel level, rider and passenger gear, luggage contents, front and rear L1, L2 and L3 measurements, preload position, compression clicks, rebound clicks, tire pressures and the test surface. Note a symptom in concrete terms—such as “rear bottoms on the third gravel dip”—rather than “feels bad.”

When the motorcycle behaves well, stop adjusting and preserve that baseline. Make one change at a time on a later ride. This prevents a preload change and two damping changes from becoming an untraceable combination.

When to use a suspension specialist

Seek professional advice when you cannot reach the specified sag without maxing out preload, when static sag is clearly abnormal, or when the motorcycle continues to bottom, top out or pack down after sensible adjustments. Bring your measurements, load description and setup record. A correctly rated spring is the relevant upgrade when the existing spring cannot support the intended rider-and-luggage combination; a replacement shock or internal valving change should follow a diagnosis rather than a click-count guess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not open a pressurized shock yourself. A specialist can verify spring rate, inspect seals and linkage, and service internal components using the equipment required to contain high-pressure gas and oil.
