On supported vehicles, you can create a profile, associate one vehicle key with it, save comfort and infotainment preferences, and synchronise eligible data through Mercedes me. The exact labels and sequence vary by model year, equipment, MBUX generation and country, so treat the menu paths below as documented examples rather than a universal procedure. Start by identifying your vehicle and opening its model-specific Digital Owner’s Manual.
What a Mercedes-Benz user profile does
A user profile is a collection of driver-specific settings stored in MBUX. Selecting a profile tells the vehicle which saved preferences to load. Depending on the vehicle, those preferences can include seat and mirror positions, seat-memory data, radio stations, recent destinations, climate settings, ambient lighting, an individual DYNAMIC SELECT configuration, display layouts, themes, suggestions and favourites.

Mercedes-Benz described MBUX in 2022 as supporting up to seven profiles and around 800 parameters. That is a corporate capability statement, not a promise that every Mercedes-Benz vehicle, market or model year offers seven profiles or all 800 parameters. The available functions depend on the vehicle, manufacture year, selected equipment and country. The company’s 2022 MBUX overview gives the broad capability context.
A profile is not the same thing as a Mercedes me account. The in-car profile controls what MBUX loads locally. Mercedes me can synchronise some profile information when the vehicle, account and service eligibility meet the required conditions. Removing an in-car profile also does not delete the Mercedes me account or all personal data held in the Mercedes-Benz ecosystem.

Check these details before you begin
- Identify the exact vehicle: note the model, model year, body style and market. A 2026 GLB and a 2025 CLA, for example, use different terms for related functions.
- Have the intended key available: key association is performed from inside the vehicle and requires the key you want to assign.
- Prepare your Mercedes me credentials: synchronisation in the cited CLA instructions requires a registered Mercedes me ID, accepted terms, a vehicle linked to that ID and a selected user.
- Park safely: complete setup while stationary. Menus can change as you move between MBUX screens, and some settings are unavailable while driving.
- Use the vehicle’s own manual: Mercedes-Benz provides digital manuals by market. If a label in this guide is not visible, search your manual for terms such as Profile, Change profile, Key recognition or Synchronise automatically.
Set up a profile in MBUX
The following sequence is documented for the 2026 GLB. Other vehicles may open the same functions from a user icon, a status line or a different settings page.
1. Open Profile
- Switch on the vehicle and let MBUX finish starting.
- Open Profile from the MBUX interface.
- If it is offered, select Set-up assistant.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to create and configure the user.
The setup assistant may ask for a profile name, identification or security information depending on the vehicle. Do not assume that every vehicle has this exact label; the GLB owner’s manual is the source for this documented path: Mercedes-Benz GLB SUV 2026 April MBUX Owner’s Manual.
2. Complete any authentication prompts
Some vehicles can use a PIN or biometric information as part of profile access. If MBUX asks you to create or confirm authentication, record it securely. A forgotten PIN can prevent profile selection even though the vehicle itself remains usable.

3. Save your preferences after the profile exists
Select the newly created profile before adjusting seats, mirrors, displays, audio, climate or navigation. Settings changed while another user or no user is active can be saved to a different profile or remain as general vehicle settings, depending on the system.

Associate a vehicle key with the profile
Key recognition is a separate step from creating the profile. In the documented 2026 GLB flow, the key is linked to the selected driver’s profile and can cause the profile’s light, mirror and seat settings to be pre-activated when that key unlocks the vehicle.
GLB example: Key recognition
- Open Profile in MBUX.
- Select Key recognition.
- Have the intended vehicle key ready.
- Follow the assistant’s prompts until the key is assigned to the selected profile.
- Lock the vehicle, then unlock it with that key to check whether the expected profile is selected or its comfort settings are prepared.
The GLB manual states that the key is stored for one driver and one user profile. This means you should not expect one physical key to hold several independent profile assignments at the same time. If several people share a vehicle, assign each available key deliberately and verify which profile each key selects.
Key recognition does not mean that every vehicle setting becomes personal. The functions triggered by a recognised key are equipment-dependent. The manual specifically describes light, mirror and seat settings for the documented GLB procedure; it does not establish that every infotainment, climate or driver-assistance setting will follow the key.

Activate or change the current profile
After profiles exist, the active user determines which saved settings MBUX loads. The 2025 CLA instructions describe selecting the user icon in the status line and then choosing a profile. The related action is labelled Change profile in that vehicle generation.

- Tap the user or profile icon in the MBUX status line.
- Select the desired user/profile.
- Authenticate if MBUX requests a PIN or biometric check.
- Wait for the system to load the profile before changing settings.
The CLA manual warns that continuing without selecting a user loads no specific profile settings. If the seat, display or favourites look different after startup, check the active-user indicator instead of immediately overwriting the settings.
Which driver preferences can be stored?
The exact list is vehicle-specific. The examples below come from Mercedes-Benz manuals and should be treated as illustrations, not a guarantee for every current model.

The older A-Class manual provides the clearest published examples of these categories: Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan 2018 March MBUX Owner’s Manual. Its statement that driver-assistance-system settings are not personalised is particularly important. A newer vehicle may organise those controls differently, but the older example cannot be used as proof that assistance settings are profile-based today.
Synchronise profile information with Mercedes me
In-car profile storage and Mercedes me synchronisation have different prerequisites. The 2025 CLA manual says synchronisation requires all of the following:

- Acceptance of the applicable Mercedes me terms.
- The vehicle linked to that Mercedes me ID.
- A user selected in MBUX.
Enable automatic synchronisation
- Register or sign in to the Mercedes me ID associated with the vehicle.
- Accept the terms shown for the Mercedes me service.
- Confirm that the vehicle is linked to that account.
- Select the intended MBUX user/profile.
- Open the profile synchronisation settings and enable Synchronise automatically, if that option appears.
Run a one-time synchronisation
If you do not want automatic synchronisation, or you have just changed a profile and want to send the current data, select Synchronise now where available. Keep the vehicle connected as required by the system and wait for the confirmation message before assuming the update completed.
Understand the Personalisation Digital Extra limitation
The CLA manual states that if the Personalisation Digital Extra is not activated, only basic profile data synchronises. The examples given are the profile name, profile image and, depending on equipment, the Mercedes me ID PIN. A profile can therefore work normally inside the vehicle while transferring less information through Mercedes me than a vehicle with the relevant personalisation service activated.
Service availability is not universal. Mercedes-Benz says connected services and functions depend on model, manufacture year, selected equipment and country. A missing synchronisation switch can therefore indicate an eligibility or configuration difference rather than a fault.

Use the manual for the vehicle physically in front of you, not the newest manual you can find online. Mercedes-Benz’s Digital Owner’s Manual FAQ explains access to the company’s guide system. Market-specific manuals are important because service availability and menu content can differ by country.
Removing a profile and protecting personal data
Before selling, returning or sharing a vehicle, remove personal profiles from MBUX. In the documented 2026 GLB behavior, removing a user profile deletes the associated PIN and biometric data in the vehicle and on its sensors. It does not delete the Mercedes me ID or personal data retained in the Mercedes-Benz ecosystem.
- Remove each unwanted in-car user/profile through the vehicle’s profile-management screen.
- Check that the PIN and biometric information no longer appear as selectable authentication methods.
- Separately review the Mercedes me account and vehicle linkage if the vehicle is changing ownership or leaving your control.
- Do not describe the in-car deletion as cancellation of the Mercedes me account.

Troubleshoot the common setup failures
The Profile or Set-up assistant option is missing
- Confirm that you are looking at the vehicle’s MBUX profile area rather than a Mercedes me app screen.
- Search the manual for Change profile or a user icon; another MBUX generation may use those terms.
- Check model year, equipment and country. Mercedes-Benz does not promise identical functions across all vehicles.
- If the vehicle is company-owned or restricted by an administrator, ask the owner or fleet manager whether profile functions are limited.
The key will not associate with the profile
- Use the exact key you intend to assign and keep it available during the entire Key recognition assistant.
- Make sure the intended profile is selected before starting key recognition.
- If the key is already associated with another user, review the vehicle’s key-management instructions instead of repeatedly starting setup.
- Remember that the documented GLB behavior stores one key for one driver and one user profile; it is not a multi-profile key container.
The vehicle unlocks but the wrong settings appear
- Check which user is shown in the MBUX status line.
- Verify that the key was assigned to the intended profile, not merely that the profile exists.
- Manually select the profile and authenticate. If the correct settings load manually, the issue is likely key association or an equipment-specific key-recognition limitation.
- Re-save the seat and mirror positions while the correct profile is active.
Synchronisation is unavailable or only basic data appears
- Confirm Mercedes me ID registration and terms acceptance.
- Check that the vehicle is linked to the same Mercedes me ID and that a user is selected.
- Look for Synchronise automatically or Synchronise now in the profile settings.
- Check whether the Personalisation Digital Extra is active. The cited CLA manual limits synchronised data to basic information when it is not activated.
- Consider market, model-year and equipment eligibility before treating the missing option as a software defect.
Driver-assistance settings do not follow the profile
That may be normal. The cited 2018 A-Class manual explicitly excludes driver-assistance-system settings from personalisation. Do not change safety-system settings repeatedly in an attempt to make them profile-specific; consult the exact manual to learn which controls are global, retained or reset at startup.
A profile was deleted but account data remains
This is expected under the documented GLB behavior. Removing the vehicle profile deletes local PIN and biometric data, while the Mercedes me ID and associated personal data remain in the Mercedes-Benz ecosystem. Account management and in-car profile removal are separate actions.
A practical setup sequence for a shared vehicle
- Identify every regular driver and give each person a distinct MBUX profile.
- Complete profile creation while the vehicle is stationary.
- Have each driver sit in the vehicle, select their own profile and set seat and mirror positions.
- Assign each available key through Key recognition while the correct profile is active.
- Save audio, navigation, climate, lighting and display preferences only after confirming the active user.
- Link the vehicle to the appropriate Mercedes me ID and configure synchronisation if the service is available.
- Test each key separately: lock the vehicle, unlock it with one key, inspect the active profile, then repeat with the other key.
- Before transferring the vehicle, remove in-car profiles and separately review the Mercedes me account and vehicle link.
This process avoids the most common mistake: changing a seat or display setting while MBUX is running without the intended user selected, then assuming the profile or key failed.
What to verify in your own manual
- The precise path to profile creation and switching.
- Whether your vehicle offers a setup assistant.
- Whether key recognition is fitted and which settings it can pre-activate.
- The number of profiles supported by your MBUX version.
- Which preferences are personal and which are global or reset.
- Whether Mercedes me services and the Personalisation Digital Extra are available in your country and on your vehicle.
- The correct procedure for deleting profiles, PINs and biometric data before ownership changes.
Mercedes-Benz’s manuals are the controlling reference because the documented GLB, CLA and A-Class flows use materially different labels. Set up the profile locally first, associate the key only after the correct user is active, and treat Mercedes me synchronisation as an optional, eligibility-dependent layer rather than a replacement for in-car profile setup.
