The correct Panigale V4 suspension setup starts with identifying the exact year and trim, then measuring sag before touching damping. A base V4 with a fully adjustable Showa Big Piston Fork (BPF) is adjusted mechanically; a V4 S with Öhlins NPX-30, TTX36 and Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES) is configured through a different hardware and software system. Settings for one cannot simply be copied to the other.
Use preload to establish the bike’s ride height, then tune compression and rebound in small, recorded changes. A street setup favors compliance and tire grip on imperfect pavement. A track setup can be firmer and more narrowly optimized for smooth asphalt, but it should be returned to a road baseline before public-road riding.

Panigale V4 S: Öhlins and DES
Documented V4 S generations use an Öhlins NPX-30 fork, TTX36 rear shock and Öhlins steering damper controlled by Ducati Electronic Suspension. Damping support is selected through the motorcycle’s electronic interface and riding-mode logic rather than by treating every function as a conventional fork clicker.
Ducati describes the system as using SmartEC control and event-based Öhlins intervention. Menu names, sensors, software behavior and available parameters vary by model year. Record the exact year, trim and software context before you write down a setting.
Why the distinction matters
A Showa manual fork’s click count is not an equivalent DES value. Applying a V4 mechanical baseline to a V4 S can produce an unintended damping level, and applying a V4 S electronic mode description to a base V4 leaves you adjusting the wrong controls. If the motorcycle has been modified, confirm what hardware is actually installed instead of relying only on badges or previous owner descriptions.
Prepare the motorcycle and your measurement record
Suspension changes are only meaningful when the conditions are repeatable. Before measuring, create a setup sheet for the motorcycle and rider.
Record these variables
- Exact model year and trim: base V4, V4 S, V4 R or another documented variant.
- Fork and shock hardware, including any cartridge, spring or shock replacement.
- Tire make, model, size and current cold pressure.
- Rider weight wearing the complete riding gear used for the intended session.
- Fuel load, passenger status and any luggage or track equipment.
- Current riding mode and every preload, compression and rebound position.
Use a level surface and support the motorcycle securely. Have a helper hold the bike upright while measurements are taken. Keep the wheels on the ground for normal sag measurements, and use the same reference points every time. A simple suspension sag tool or a tape measure can work if the method is consistent.
Measure free sag and rider sag
Sag establishes how much of the suspension travel is used by the motorcycle alone and by the motorcycle with the rider aboard. Measure both the fork and rear suspension; changing one end alters the motorcycle’s attitude and steering response.

Step 1: Establish an unloaded reference
- Extend the suspension fully while the wheel remains safely supported. Measure from a fixed point on the chassis to a fixed point on the wheel or axle line.
- Record the fork and rear measurements as your fully extended references. Do not change the reference points between tests.
Step 2: Measure free (static) sag
- Lower the motorcycle gently onto its wheels without applying the brakes or bouncing it aggressively.
- Let the suspension settle naturally, then measure the same distances again.
- Subtract the settled measurement from the fully extended reference. That result is free or static sag.
Step 3: Measure rider sag
- Dress the rider in the gear used on the road or circuit and place the rider in the normal riding position. Keep feet on the pegs and hands on the bars; use a helper to stabilize the motorcycle.
- Have the rider settle the suspension without forcing it down. Measure the fork and rear distances at rest.
- Subtract the rider-loaded measurement from the fully extended reference. Record rider sag at both ends.
Use the target ranges in the applicable Ducati manual or have a suspension specialist select targets for your weight, tires and use. There is no single sag number that is correct for every Panigale, spring rate or rider. If the target cannot be reached without excessive or nearly zero preload, the spring rate is probably unsuitable; changing clickers will not correct that fundamental mismatch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet preload first, then restore the geometry
Preload is the first adjustment because it establishes ride height and the starting position of the suspension in its travel. It does not make a spring intrinsically stiffer, but it changes how much travel is available in each direction and can alter steering geometry.
Front preload
Adjust the fork preload equally on both legs unless the manual specifies otherwise. Make small, equal changes, measure again and record the result. After reaching the desired front sag, check that the fork tubes, axle and handlebars remain correctly aligned and that no adjuster has been forced beyond its usable range.
Rear preload
Use the rear preload adjuster specified for your trim. The hydraulic rear preload adjuster is useful when the motorcycle’s load or intended use changes, but every meaningful change should be followed by a sag measurement at both ends. Do not set the rear in isolation: ride height changes affect rake, trail and the balance between corner entry and exit.
Recheck both ends
After preload changes, repeat free and rider sag measurements at the front and rear. Confirm that the motorcycle sits level for its intended use and that steering does not become unusually quick or slow. A setup that reaches a sag number but produces unstable geometry is not finished.

Establish a damping baseline
Once preload and spring suitability are addressed, set compression and rebound from the applicable Ducati manual baseline. Identify the specified reference direction—usually fully closed or fully open—and count every position from that reference. Write the original setting before making the first change.

Compression damping
Compression controls resistance as the suspension is compressed by braking, cornering load and bumps. Excessive compression can make the Panigale skip across broken pavement or lose grip over sharp edges. Too little compression can allow excessive dive, bottoming or a vague platform under hard braking. Change only one compression adjuster at a time and use the same test section to judge the result.
Rebound damping
Rebound controls how quickly the suspension returns after compression. Too much rebound can pack the suspension down over a series of bumps, leaving less travel and reducing grip. Too little can make the motorcycle feel springy or unsettled after a curb, bump or direction change. Evaluate rebound after compression changes because the two sensations are linked.
Log every change
Use a table or notebook with the date, track or road, air and track temperature when known, tire pressures, fuel load, rider comments and each adjuster position. Turn adjusters in small increments, count aloud and never rely on memory. If a change is worse, return to the last known setting rather than adding another change to compensate.

Street riding demands grip and compliance over patched pavement, expansion joints, potholes and changing temperatures. Start with the road-oriented or standard setting for your model and preserve enough suspension movement to follow imperfect surfaces.
Mechanical V4 street priorities
- Set sag for the rider and normal road load before chasing damping feel.
- Use the Ducati standard or road column as the initial compression and rebound reference.
- Test braking on a familiar, legal road section with representative bumps rather than judging the setup on a perfectly smooth surface.
- Prefer a controlled, compliant response over the maximum resistance to dive or squat.
DES-equipped V4 S street priorities
Select the road-oriented electronic mode documented for your model. Ducati’s electronic documentation identifies Street, Sport and Race behavior; Street is intended to preserve compliance, while Sport changes the support and response. Confirm the exact menu labels in your owner’s manual because the available parameters differ by generation.
Do not assume that a firmer mode is safer. A setting that supports braking on smooth circuit asphalt can reduce tire contact on broken public roads. If the motorcycle feels harsh, skips over bumps or steers unpredictably, return to the road baseline and investigate preload, tire pressure and spring suitability before increasing damping.

Build a track baseline
On a circuit, smooth pavement, repeated braking zones and higher cornering loads justify a firmer starting point. Begin with the track column in the applicable manual or the manufacturer’s Race baseline, then tune for tires, rider pace, temperature and surface.

- Braking support and whether the fork uses travel progressively without harsh bottoming.
- Corner-entry stability while releasing the brakes and turning.
- Mid-corner grip over curbs or surface changes.
- Exit grip and whether the rear squats or spins when power is applied.
- Tire wear patterns and any visible bottoming marks.
Make one change per session or test sequence. A track setting has a narrower operating window than a street setting, so temperature and tire pressure changes can alter the result. If the circuit is rough or the weather is cold, a softer setting may produce more usable grip than a nominally faster, firmer one.
Published Ducati example: 2023 V4 R fork settings
The following figures are from the 2023 Ducati Panigale V4 R owner’s manual and illustrate the difference between standard and track starting points. They are not universal values for every V4, V4 S or V4 R, and they do not translate directly to DES menus.
| Öhlins fork parameter | Standard use | Track use |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | 16 clicks from fully closed | 9 clicks from fully closed |
| Rebound | 12 clicks from fully closed | 9 clicks from fully closed |
| Spring preload | 10 turns | 12 turns |
Ducati explicitly qualifies these settings: “the indicated settings are mere suggestions since they depend on riding conditions as well as on the rider’s skills and needs in terms of comfort.” Treat the table as a documented starting point, not a promise of a correct setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand DES riding modes and Race settings
On a DES-equipped V4 S, damping support is coordinated with riding modes and suspension events. Ducati describes separate Race A, Race B, Sport and Street behavior. Race A is described as a very firm suspension setup for performance use.

You can select a Race mode only if your model’s manual permits it, but a race-oriented setting is not automatically appropriate for public roads. Smooth circuit surfaces let a firm setup support braking and acceleration without losing contact. Broken or crowned roads demand compliance, and a firm setting can transmit impacts or reduce grip when the tire encounters a bump while leaned over.

For a road ride, use the road-oriented baseline unless you have a specific, repeatable reason to change it. If you do test Sport or Race on the street, do so cautiously, avoid using public roads as a high-speed experiment and return to the documented road setting when the surface becomes rough or unpredictable.
Why electronic values cannot be copied between years
DES generations can use different sensors, software logic and menu labels. Record the exact model year, trim, selected mode and any user-adjustable parameter displayed by the motorcycle. A setting described as “Race A” on one generation may not expose the same damping adjustments on another.
Use symptoms to guide one-variable changes
| Observed symptom | Checks before changing damping | Likely direction for a controlled test |
|---|---|---|
| Harsh response over sharp road bumps | Confirm tire pressure, sag and spring suitability; verify that the adjuster reference was counted correctly. | Reduce compression damping slightly, one change at a time. |
| Fork dives excessively under braking | Check front sag, preload range and signs of bottoming. | Increase compression slightly only after sag and spring checks. |
| Front feels nervous after a bump | Check rebound position, tire condition and whether the fork is packing down. | Test less rebound damping, then reassess on the same section. |
| Rear loses grip over a series of bumps | Check rear sag, tire pressure and rebound; inspect for packing down. | Test less rebound damping and evaluate exit grip. |
| Rear squats or feels vague on corner exit | Check rear sag, spring rate and chain or tire condition. | Test additional support only after confirming preload and spring suitability. |
| Steering becomes unusually quick or slow | Recheck front and rear ride heights after every preload change. | Restore balanced geometry before adjusting damping. |
These symptom directions are diagnostic experiments, not guaranteed cures. A tire problem, unsuitable spring, incorrect pressure or mechanical fault can mimic a damping error.
Return to a safe road setting after track work
Before riding home, restore the recorded street baseline if the track setup feels harsh, reduces grip over bumps or changes steering behavior. Check both ends for the correct preload, compression and rebound positions, verify tire pressures for road use and inspect for bottoming marks, leaks or damage. Do not assume that a motorcycle that felt controlled on smooth asphalt is safe on public pavement.
Consider specialist Öhlins upgrades only after the baseline is correct
Öhlins lists a TTX GP shock for Ducati Panigale V4, V4 R and V4 S-family applications. The shock separates compression and rebound functions and is positioned for on-track performance. Öhlins also lists an NIX 30 cartridge kit for Panigale V4 applications with separate damping functions and external adjusters.
These are specialist upgrade paths, not universal replacements. Confirm model-year and trim fitment, spring rate, ride-height implications and compatibility with the motorcycle’s existing electronic suspension before purchasing. A cartridge or shock that fits the chassis may still require a different setup strategy, and electronic functions may not operate as expected after a hardware change. Have installation and initial setup performed by a qualified suspension technician when you cannot verify those details yourself.
Quick Recap
