INEOS quotes up to 3,500 kg for a braked trailer, but passengers, fuel, accessories, hitch load and cargo all consume the Grenadier’s permitted mass. Fit a market-approved towbar and trailer-electrical system, keep the combined vehicle and trailer weights within the handbook and registration limits, and use the exact roof-rack or load-bed ratings for your configuration. The procedure below covers the Station Wagon, Utility Wagon, Quartermaster and Chassis Cab without assuming that one model’s limits apply to another.
Start with the ratings for your individual Grenadier
The controlling figures are on the vehicle identification and registration documents and in the handbook for the exact market, model year, engine, body and equipment level. A brochure maximum is useful for planning, but it cannot override a lower rating printed for a particular vehicle.

INEOS immediately qualifies that statement: “The weight of passengers, cargo and options or accessories may reduce the amount you can tow.” The practical towing limit is therefore the lowest applicable value among the vehicle’s rated braked-trailer mass, gross train weight calculation, hitch rating, trailer rating and any local legal limit.

What each weight rating means
| Rating | Use it for | Grenadier evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Gross vehicle weight (GVW) | The maximum legal mass of the Grenadier itself, including occupants, fuel, accessories, hitch load and cargo | Read the exact number in the handbook and registration documents; it varies with configuration. |
| Axle ratings | Maximum load carried by the front and rear axles independently | Both axle limits must be respected even when total GVW is not exceeded. |
| Maximum braked trailer mass | The heaviest braked trailer the vehicle may tow | INEOS quotes 3,500 kg, but says vehicle-specific capacity can vary. |
| Gross train weight (GTW) | The combined mass of the loaded Grenadier and loaded trailer | The 2026 Chassis Cab specification lists 7,000 kg; do not assume that figure applies to another body. |
| Hitch or towbar rating | The permitted trailer mass and vertical load for the fitted attachment | Use the plate or approval document for the installed hitch and the local market. |
| Trailer and coupling ratings | The limits imposed by the trailer axle, coupling, brakes and drawbar | The trailer’s own rating can be lower than the Grenadier’s headline capacity. |
For a specific vehicle, the usable trailer mass is the lowest of these constraints. A loaded trailer can be below 3,500 kg yet still exceed the Grenadier’s remaining train-weight allowance or rear-axle limit.
How to calculate the available towing capacity
- Write down the Grenadier’s GVW, front- and rear-axle ratings, maximum braked trailer mass and GTW from the handbook and registration plate.
- Weigh or calculate the Grenadier in its towing condition: driver and passengers, fuel, tools, recovery equipment, roof gear, spare parts, hitch hardware and the trailer’s nose weight all count.
- Subtract that loaded vehicle mass from GTW. The result is the most the trailer and its load can weigh under the train-weight limit.
- Compare that result with the vehicle’s maximum braked-trailer mass, hitch rating and trailer rating. Use the smallest number.
- Check the front and rear axle loads. A trailer nose load can push the rear axle over its limit before the total GVW is reached.
As an arithmetic illustration only, if a Chassis Cab loaded for work weighed 3,180 kg and its listed GTW was 7,000 kg, the train-weight calculation would leave 3,820 kg. The 3,500 kg braked-trailer ceiling would then be the tighter limit. If the same vehicle weighed 3,650 kg, the GTW calculation would leave 3,350 kg, so towing 3,500 kg would be prohibited even though the headline figure is higher.
Choose the body style around the load you actually carry
Payload is what remains inside the Grenadier after the vehicle’s own specification, fuel, occupants and accessories are accounted for. More seats, heavier options, winches, protection equipment, larger wheels and roof systems reduce usable payload. The following published European examples show why a model name alone is not enough.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Configuration example | Published payload information | What it means for setup |
|---|---|---|
| Station Wagon, fully optioned diesel Trialmaster | 689 kg | A heavily equipped five-seat vehicle can have substantially less payload than a base Utility Wagon. |
| Utility Wagon, base two-seat petrol | 871 kg | This is the high end of the cited European examples, not a universal Utility rating. |
| Quartermaster | Up to 835 kg | Use the exact cab, engine, option and market rating; “up to” is not a guarantee for every pickup. |
| Chassis Cab | Payload value not stated in the cited specification | Use the body-builder or registration documents for the completed vehicle, especially after fitting a tray, crane or service body. |
The 689–871 kg range comes from 2026 European Utility and Station Wagon specifications. It is not a promise that every Grenadier sold elsewhere has those figures. If you add a 120 kg winch, 80 kg of underbody protection, 60 kg of tools and two 90 kg occupants to a vehicle with a 689 kg published payload, 460 kg is already committed before trailer nose weight or additional cargo. Perform this arithmetic with your vehicle’s actual weights.
Station Wagon setup
Use the Station Wagon when people, enclosed cargo and weather protection matter more than maximum payload. Count every passenger and their luggage. A full complement of occupants can consume a large share of the available payload on a highly optioned diesel model, leaving less capacity for the hitch load and recovery equipment.
Utility Wagon setup
The two-seat Utility Wagon can offer more payload in a base petrol configuration, but the advantage narrows as you add seats, storage systems, winches, roof equipment or protective accessories. Measure the completed vehicle rather than relying on the base-model figure.

Quartermaster setup
The Quartermaster combines a pickup load area with up to 835 kg of published payload. Keep heavy items low, forward of the rear axle where the body-builder guidance permits, and spread them across the load floor. Secure them to the four factory load-space tie-down rings; do not rely on the tailgate to restrain a sliding load.

Chassis Cab setup
A Chassis Cab is a platform for a body, tray or specialist equipment. The finished vehicle’s mass, axle distribution and GTW can change after conversion. Obtain the completed-body documentation and have the final axle loads checked before towing. The cited 2026 specification lists a 7,000 kg GTW, but that number does not establish the payload or hitch rating of every conversion.
Select an approved towbar or hitch
The Grenadier uses a bespoke vertical towing interface. INEOS describes support for several attachment standards, but availability depends on the market, body configuration and approval status of the specific vehicle.
| Interface | Typical use | Selection checks |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed towball | Conventional braked trailers, caravans and utility trailers | Confirm the approved ball size, vertical-load rating, trailer coupling height and local certification. |
| NATO pintle tow hitch | Military-style or heavy-duty lunette-eye trailers | Verify that the trailer eye, articulation range and safety equipment match the hitch approval. |
| 50 mm jaw/towball | Trailers using a compatible 50 mm coupling or combination jaw | Check coupling compatibility and whether the selected attachment is approved for your market. |
| Class III NAS hitch | North American-style receiver applications where offered | Confirm that the Class III receiver is available for the exact Grenadier and that the insert, pin and wiring meet local rules. |
Do not choose a hitch solely because it can physically bolt to the vehicle. The attachment, mounting hardware, towball or pintle, safety-chain points and electrical kit should be approved as a system. Ask the installer for the rating plate and installation documentation, then record the permitted vertical load alongside the vehicle’s own limits.
Install trailer electrics, brakes and safety equipment
A heavy trailer needs more than a towball. Fit the market-appropriate trailer wiring system and verify that it communicates correctly with the Grenadier’s lighting and stability systems. The trailer must have working service brakes where required, a breakaway system where required, safety chains or secondary coupling and legal lighting.
- Use the approved vehicle-specific trailer harness or interface. Avoid cutting factory wiring or using an unfused improvised splice.
- Connect every required lighting function—tail, brake, indicator, rear fog, number-plate and hazard circuits—and test them with the engine running and the trailer connected.
- Set the trailer brake controller, if fitted, according to the trailer manufacturer’s instructions. Test progressive braking at low speed before entering traffic.
- Attach safety chains or secondary coupling to the designated points, not to convenient suspension or bumper hardware.
- Fit and test the breakaway cable or device where local law and the trailer design require one. It must operate independently of the safety chains.
- Check that the trailer plug is latched, protected from water and supported so its cable cannot drag, stretch or contact the road.
Trailer Stability Assist may be offered in some markets, but the cited specifications do not establish universal availability. Treat it as an additional aid, not a substitute for correct nose weight, speed and loading. If the system is fitted, confirm that its warning and intervention behavior is described in your handbook.

Load the Grenadier and trailer correctly
Correct mass distribution improves braking, steering and stability while keeping axle loads legal. The following sequence is suitable whenever the load or trailer changes.
- Weigh the empty combination. Record the Grenadier’s front and rear axle loads and total mass, then record the trailer’s axle loads and total mass if scales are available.
- Add the occupants and fuel. Include the driver, passengers, child seats, luggage and the fuel level you expect on the trip.
- Add fixed and portable equipment. Count roof racks, awnings, winches, recovery boards, compressors, jacks, tools, spare wheels, coolers and tie-down gear.
- Measure the trailer nose weight. It counts as Grenadier payload and affects the rear axle. Keep it within both the vehicle’s and trailer’s stated limits; no universal Grenadier nose-weight number is supplied for every configuration.
- Place dense items low and near the centerline. On the trailer, keep the recommended proportion of mass ahead of the axle group without exceeding the coupling limit. On the vehicle, avoid concentrating cargo at the extreme rear.
- Secure every item. Use rated straps, chains or barriers attached to structural tie-down points. Chock wheeled equipment and protect straps from sharp edges.
- Recheck axle and total masses. A load that appears acceptable by total weight can still overload one axle. Move cargo or reduce the load until every rating is met.
- Set tyre pressures and torque wheel nuts. Use the handbook’s towing or heavy-load pressures and the specified wheel-nut torque. Recheck torque after the distance and interval specified by INEOS or the wheel manufacturer.
- Repeat the checks after fuel, water or cargo changes. A full auxiliary tank, a changed tool case or a different trailer can alter the axle balance.
Quartermaster load-bed practices
The Quartermaster has four load-space tie-down rings. Use opposing rings to prevent forward, rearward and lateral movement, and place a protective mat under dense or abrasive equipment. The open tailgate is rated to support 225 kg, but that is a support rating—not permission to carry an unsecured load or to exceed the vehicle’s GVW and rear-axle limit. Keep the tailgate closed whenever it is not specifically needed for a properly supported load.
Use the roof only within the exact rack and vehicle limits
Roof ratings distinguish between dynamic load—the mass permitted while driving—and static load—the mass permitted when parked. The rack, mounting hardware and vehicle roof all have limits; use the lowest one.
| Vehicle or system | Published limit | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Quartermaster with the specified Rhino Rack system | 420 kg static; 150 kg dynamic | These figures apply to that specified rack and Quartermaster setup, not automatically to another Grenadier or rack. |
| Chassis Cab | 120 kg dynamic | Use the exact Chassis Cab body, rack and mounting instructions; no corresponding static value is established here. |
| Station Wagon or Utility Wagon | Not stated in the cited material | Read the handbook and rack manufacturer’s rating for the individual vehicle. |
Count the rack, crossbars, tent, awning, cases, ladders and their mounting hardware in the dynamic mass. Keep the heaviest items low and centered, check that doors and emergency equipment remain accessible, and inspect mounts after rough-road travel. Never substitute the Quartermaster’s 420/150 kg figures for a Station Wagon, Utility Wagon or a different rack.
Power winches and work equipment safely
For specialist equipment, use the factory auxiliary electrical provisions rather than routing high current through a trailer socket or an unfused battery cable. The available arrangements include three standard 10 A circuits or an optional high-load panel with three 25 A circuits, one 500 A circuit and weatherproof roof outlets.
- Match each accessory’s continuous and peak current to the circuit rating.
- Use the factory fusing, relays, connectors and grounding points specified for the panel.
- Keep high-current cables protected from heat, abrasion, water and moving suspension parts.
- Isolate equipment before servicing, and follow the accessory maker’s instructions for battery protection and duty cycle.
- Do not interpret the 500 A circuit as permission to exceed the battery, alternator, wiring or vehicle-GVW limits; it is an electrical provision, not a towing or payload increase.
Roof outlets are useful for removable work gear, but their weatherproof rating does not eliminate the need for caps, strain relief and inspection after washing or water crossings.

Match the setup to common towing jobs
Caravan or enclosed travel trailer
Choose the approved fixed towball or compatible receiver, verify the coupling height, and allow for the caravan’s loaded nose weight in the Grenadier’s payload. Pack water, gas bottles, batteries and food so the caravan’s axle load and nose load remain within its plate limits. Test all lights, the brake controller and any stability-assist function before a long trip.
Plant, machinery or equipment trailer
Measure the machine’s operating mass, fuel and attachments—not just the trailer’s unladen figure. Keep the machine’s center of gravity low, use rated ramps and tie-downs, and check that loading it does not overload one trailer axle. A pintle or jaw may be more suitable than a ball for a lunette-eye trailer, but only when that interface is approved for the Grenadier and trailer.
Boat trailer
Include the boat, outboard, fuel, batteries, water, winch post and spare wheel in the trailer mass. Secure the bow and stern, keep the coupling locked, and inspect the trailer’s brakes and lights after launching. Salt water can corrode connectors and couplings, so rinse and dry them according to the component maker’s instructions.
Worksite or recovery trailer
Tools, compressors, generators, fuel cans and recovery gear often create a rear-heavy load. Spread them across the trailer floor, secure them against movement and account for every item in the vehicle payload. If a winch or hydraulic equipment is fitted, use the high-load electrical provision and confirm that the completed body or tray has not reduced axle or GTW margins.
Pre-departure inspection
- Confirm the hitch is the approved type, fully seated, locked and showing its positive-lock indicator.
- Check the towball, pintle or jaw for wear, cracks, missing pins and correct lubrication where specified.
- Attach safety chains and the breakaway cable to their designated points.
- Verify trailer coupling height, nose weight, jockey-wheel stowage and stabilizer operation.
- Test all trailer lights, brake-controller output, hazard lights and reverse functions.
- Inspect tyres for pressure, load index, damage and adequate tread; include the trailer spare.
- Check wheel-nut torque on both vehicles and ensure no cargo can contact tyres, suspension or exhaust components.
- Adjust mirrors and confirm that cameras or sensors are not blocked by the trailer or load.
- Close and latch doors, tailgates, toolboxes and roof-boxes; cover loose cargo against weather.
- Perform a low-speed brake and steering test, then stop and recheck the hitch, straps and electrical plug.
Troubleshoot problems before they become failures
Trailer lights work intermittently
Stop and inspect the plug for corrosion, water, bent pins or a loose ground. Check the harness connector and trailer fuse arrangement specified for the Grenadier. Test the trailer on another approved tow vehicle only as a diagnostic step; do not bypass the Grenadier’s protection with an improvised power feed.
The trailer feels unstable or sways
Reduce speed smoothly without abrupt steering or heavy braking. Check nose weight, tyre pressures, load placement and whether dense cargo has been loaded behind the trailer axle. Reweigh the combination and verify that the trailer, hitch and vehicle ratings are not exceeded. If sway persists, stop using the combination until the trailer setup is corrected.

The rear of the Grenadier squats heavily
Measure the nose weight and rear-axle load. Excessive squat can indicate too much cargo behind the vehicle axle, a trailer nose load beyond the permitted value or suspension components that are not approved for the load. Do not compensate by simply increasing tyre pressure beyond the handbook’s limit or fitting unapproved springs.
The hitch will not lock
Keep the trailer supported, clean the coupling and inspect the ball, jaw or pintle for mismatch or damage. Confirm that the insert, pin and safety latch are the correct approved parts. Never tow on a hitch that lacks a positive lock or whose indicator cannot be verified.
A warning appears after connecting the trailer
Stop safely and read the handbook’s trailer-related warning procedure. Check the electrical connection, trailer lamps, brake-controller wiring and any stability-assist requirements. If the warning remains, have the system inspected before towing at road speed.

Legal requirements remain jurisdiction-specific
INEOS specifications do not replace local licensing, trailer-brake, lighting, coupling, safety-chain or speed rules. The applicable requirements depend on where the vehicle is registered and operated, the trailer’s plated mass and the driver’s licence category. Confirm those rules with the relevant authority and keep the vehicle and trailer registration documents available.
Market differences also affect which towbar standards, trailer sockets, brake controllers and Trailer Stability Assist features can be supplied. A European 50 mm towball installation, a North American Class III NAS receiver and a NATO pintle are not interchangeable merely because the Grenadier platform supports several interfaces. Use parts approved for the destination market and exact vehicle.
Recheck the setup whenever the Grenadier changes
Repeat the weight and fitment review after installing or removing a winch, bull bar, roof rack, drawer system, auxiliary tank, larger tyres, suspension components, service body or tray. Recheck the handbook whenever wheels, tyres, suspension or body configuration changes. Keep a written load sheet with the measured vehicle mass, axle loads, nose weight, trailer mass and the ratings of the fitted hitch and rack. That record makes it easier to identify which limit changed and prevents a previous towing setup from being reused after the Grenadier has been modified.
