A desert-ready side-by-side starts with the exact vehicle’s operator guide and the rules for the exact riding area. Before changing tire pressure or loading gear, identify the make, model, model year, tire size, expected occupants, cargo weight and terrain. Then work through this order: confirm access and route, inspect the machine, set tires conservatively, prepare restraints and visibility equipment, secure a recovery-oriented loadout, and apply the model’s sand or severe-duty maintenance schedule.
1. Start with the side-by-side and the destination
“Desert riding” covers hard-packed two-track, loose sand, dunes, rocky washes and remote public land. A setup that works for one surface, vehicle or load may be unsuitable for another. The vehicle’s operator guide, safety labels and tire-pressure label are the controlling sources for specifications.

Identify the configuration you are actually taking
- Record the precise make, model and year.
- Check the tire size, construction and load rating fitted to the vehicle.
- Estimate the total load: occupants, fuel, water, tools, spare parts and recreational equipment.
- Note whether the route is mostly firm desert, deep sand, dunes, rocky terrain or a mixture.
- Confirm which seats, restraints, doors, nets and cargo areas your model provides.
Read the operator guide before adjusting tire pressure, changing tires or altering suspension settings. Can-Am Off-Road’s dune guidance, published September 2, 2026, specifically advises following the guide, changing pressure gradually and considering both the vehicle and terrain. That advice does not establish a pressure that can be copied to another side-by-side.

Use current maps and notices from the land manager or riding-area authority. Confirm that side-by-sides are allowed, whether a permit or registration is required, which routes are designated, and whether seasonal closures, fire restrictions or weather-related closures apply. Can-Am advises staying within designated riding areas; Honda’s pre-ride guidance recommends planning unfamiliar areas in advance. General preparation advice cannot determine the current rules for a particular desert.

Save the route and a backup route offline if possible. Tell another person where you intend to ride and when you expect to return. Honda recommends riding with another person rather than treating a remote outing as a solo trip.
2. Perform a model-specific pre-ride inspection
Inspect the machine on level ground before loading it. Let hot components cool before working around the engine or radiator. A checklist is useful, but the exact inspection order and acceptable conditions come from your model’s manual.
| Area | What to check | What a pass looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Tires and wheels | Condition, cuts, punctures, bead area, wheel damage and pressure | No damage that the manual treats as unsafe; pressure matches the vehicle’s specified starting point for the planned load and use |
| Fluids and leaks | Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and other model-specified reservoirs; look underneath for fresh leaks | Levels are within the marked range and no active leak is present |
| Throttle and controls | Throttle return, steering, ignition controls and the engine stop switch | Controls move freely, return correctly and stop the engine as the manual describes |
| Brakes | Pedal or lever feel, parking brake and visible lines or components | Firm, predictable operation with no visible damage or fluid loss |
| Drivetrain | Drive shafts, boots, guards, transmission or gear selector and model-specific four-wheel-drive controls | No torn boots, loose parts or abnormal operation |
| Lights and electrical items | Headlights, brake lights, tail lights, turn indicators or accessory lighting fitted to the vehicle | Required and installed lights operate reliably |
| Fasteners and structure | Wheel nuts, suspension hardware, cage, seats, belts, doors, nets and cargo tie-down points | No loose, missing, cracked or visibly damaged components |
| Cooling area | Radiator face, intake areas and guards for sand, grass, mud or other debris | Airflow paths are clear, using only the cleaning method specified for the model |
Honda’s checklist specifically calls out throttle return, the engine stop switch, drivetrain, ignition cut-off, brakes, lights, fasteners, fluids and leaks. Polaris’ pre-ride inspection guidance dated May 15, 2026, warns that debris around the radiator can cause overheating. Do not reach into a hot cooling system, bend fins with high-pressure water or improvise a cleaning procedure; follow the matching manual.

- Pressure loss or tire damage: find the cause before riding. A plug, patch or inflation is not automatically an acceptable repair; use the tire manufacturer’s and vehicle manual’s limits.
- Soft brake pedal, control that does not return, or a stop switch that fails to work: do not enter the trail. Have the fault corrected.
- Loose wheel, suspension or cage hardware: tighten only to the specified procedure and torque where the manual provides one.
- Active fluid leak: identify the fluid and repair the source rather than relying on a top-up.
- Blocked radiator: remove debris using the model’s approved method, then recheck the cooling system before departure.
3. Choose a tire setup without guessing
Tire setup is where desert preparations most often go wrong because pressure, tire construction, vehicle weight and terrain interact. Start with the exact pressure shown on the vehicle’s label or specified in its operator guide. Treat that as the reference point, not as a number to replace with a friend’s setting or an internet recommendation.

Adjust pressure gradually
Can-Am notes that lower tire pressure may improve flotation by increasing the tire’s contact patch. That is a general principle, not a universal target. Lowering pressure can also change steering feel, sidewall support, bead security and the risk of damage. The safe adjustment depends on the exact tire, wheel, load, speed and surface.
- Measure pressure with the tires at the condition specified by the manual, recording the starting value.
- Confirm that the planned occupants and cargo are within the vehicle’s load limits.
- If the manual permits adjustment for the terrain, make a small change rather than a large drop.
- Check that the tire remains properly seated and that steering and handling are predictable at low speed.
- Recheck pressure as conditions, temperature, load or terrain change, and return to the specified setting when the manual requires it.
Never copy another side-by-side’s pressure. Two vehicles can use different tires, wheels, payloads and recommended pressures even on the same dune.
Decide whether a sand-oriented tire is appropriate
Can-Am identifies paddle or hybrid paddle tires as common choices for soft sand. Compare any tire option on the factors that can actually be established for your vehicle:

| Handling trade-off | How will the tire’s construction and tread affect steering, braking and sidewall protection on the non-sand sections? |
No independent comparative test or quantified performance gain establishes one tire as best for every desert. Use the tire and vehicle documentation together, and ask a dealer or qualified technician about fitment when the manual does not answer a compatibility question.

4. Prepare occupants, restraints and visibility
Use the protective equipment Can-Am specifies
Can-Am’s dune-riding guidance recommends a DOT-approved helmet, goggles, gloves, long sleeves, long pants and ankle-high boots. Choose equipment that fits securely and remains functional in dust and heat. A helmet and eye protection do not replace the vehicle’s restraint system.
Secure every occupant
Use the seat belts, nets, doors and other restraints required by the operator guide. Do not add passengers beyond the number of designated seating positions, and do not place people in cargo areas. Keep arms, legs and loose clothing inside the vehicle’s protected occupant area.
Make the vehicle visible on dunes
Can-Am recommends a safety flag or light whip and properly functioning lights to help other riders see a side-by-side, especially near dune crests. Before mounting an accessory, verify that the attachment point is structurally suitable, does not interfere with the cage or occupants, and complies with local requirements. Visibility equipment helps other users detect you; it does not give you right of way.
5. Pack for a remote desert ride
Honda recommends carrying water, snacks, a first-aid kit, the owner’s manual, a toolkit, tire-repair supplies and spare tires, with additional supplies based on distance, terrain, duration and rider experience. The farther the route is from assistance, the more your kit should support self-recovery or a safe wait for help.

| Item | Preparation detail | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Water and food | Carry enough for the planned time out, delays and the number of occupants; secure containers against movement | Do not let supplies exceed the vehicle’s cargo or total-load limit |
| First-aid kit | Keep it accessible rather than buried beneath luggage | It supports initial care; it is not a substitute for an emergency plan |
| Manual and route information | Carry the vehicle manual and offline maps or local terrain information | Use the current edition that matches the vehicle |
| Toolkit | Include the tools needed for the model’s wheels, fasteners and basic service points | Tools are useful only if someone in the group knows how to use them |
| Tire repair supplies | Choose a repair method compatible with the tire and carry inflation equipment | Practice the procedure and know when a damaged tire requires replacement or a spare |
| Spare tire or other spares | Base the choice on route remoteness, terrain and the vehicle’s carrying capacity | Confirm that the spare fits the wheel, brakes and available storage |
Make the repair kit match the tires
A tire repair kit is not universal. Confirm whether it suits the tire’s construction and the type of puncture you may encounter, and carry the correct valve, inflation and removal tools. Honda’s recommendation to carry repair supplies and spare tires does not mean every ride requires the same quantity; distance from help and the vehicle’s load limit determine the practical choice.
Secure cargo within the load limit
Use the vehicle’s designated cargo areas and tie-down points. Keep heavy items low and restrained so they cannot shift during braking or traversing uneven ground. Do not block radiator airflow, lighting, controls, occupant exits or access to the first-aid kit. Honda directs readers to a dealer for additional cargo guidance when the vehicle documentation does not answer a loading question.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Apply the correct sand and severe-duty maintenance plan
Frequent sand use can require more attention than ordinary recreational use. The 2026 Polaris RZR Pro R owner’s manual identifies frequent use in sand as severe duty and includes radiator and cooling-system inspection in its maintenance guidance. That classification belongs to that model’s manual; it is not a universal service interval for every side-by-side.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the exact manual’s severe-use schedule for oil, filters, drive components, cooling-system checks and other maintenance items. If your guide does not clearly classify desert or sand use, ask the manufacturer or a qualified dealer how the planned use maps to its maintenance schedule. Record the service date, engine hours and work performed so the next interval is not missed.

After a sandy ride
- Inspect the radiator and intake areas for new debris once hot parts have cooled.
- Check tires, wheels, suspension components, guards and drivetrain parts for sand intrusion or damage.
- Look for loose fasteners, torn boots, fresh leaks and changes in brake or steering feel.
- Clean the vehicle only as the operator guide directs; aggressive water or air can force debris into sensitive areas or damage components.
- Document any repair needed before the next trip instead of treating a symptom as normal desert wear.
7. Use a departure sequence that catches last-minute changes
Complete the following sequence after the vehicle is loaded and before entering the riding area:
- Recheck the current access notice, designated route, permit status and closures for the destination.
- Confirm that the group knows the route, meeting point, expected return time and emergency contact plan.
- Verify that the load is secured and remains within the manual’s occupant and cargo limits.
- Check tire pressure again after loading, using the vehicle’s specified reference and any permitted gradual adjustment.
- Test the throttle return, stop switch, brakes, steering, lights and four-wheel-drive or drive-mode controls that the route requires.
- Inspect the radiator and air paths for debris, especially if the vehicle was transported uncovered or loaded near loose sand.
- Put on helmets, goggles, gloves, long clothing and ankle-high boots; fasten every required belt, net or door.
- Confirm that the safety flag or light whip is secure, visible and permitted at the destination.
8. Troubleshoot common desert-preparation problems
The vehicle feels unstable after lowering pressure
Stop changing settings and return toward the manual’s specified pressure in small increments. Check load, tire fitment, bead seating and visible tire damage. A pressure change that improves flotation on one soft section can reduce control or protection elsewhere.
The temperature rises or a warning appears
Stop safely and allow the machine to cool. Inspect the radiator area for sand or other debris and clean it only according to the manual. If the warning remains, coolant is low, a leak is visible or the engine overheats again, end the ride and arrange service rather than continuing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA tire loses air far from the vehicle trailer
Move the group to a safe location, identify the puncture and use only a repair method compatible with the tire. If the damage is outside the repairable area or the tire will not hold pressure, install a correctly fitting spare or use the recovery plan. Do not exceed the tire’s or vehicle’s stated limits to reach base.
The destination’s rules are unclear
Do not rely on an old map, a social-media post or another rider’s assumption. Check the current land-manager notice or contact the responsible authority. If access, permit or closure status cannot be verified, choose a confirmed legal route.
9. Model-aware decisions at a glance
| Setup question | Use as the controlling reference | What the general guidance can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| What tire pressure should I use? | Your vehicle’s tire label and operator guide, considering load and terrain | Lower pressure may increase contact patch and flotation; no universal value is established |
| Which tire is right? | Vehicle and tire fitment information plus the route’s surfaces | Paddle or hybrid paddle designs are commonly considered for soft sand, but no single tire suits every desert |
| What must I inspect? | The exact model’s pre-ride checklist and manual | Core areas include tires, fluids, controls, brakes, drivetrain, lights, fasteners, leaks and cooling airflow |
| What visibility gear is needed? | Destination rules and the vehicle’s mounting instructions | A safety flag or light whip and working lights can improve detection near dune crests |
| How much repair gear should I carry? | Route remoteness, tire construction, group skills and load limit | Honda recommends tire-repair supplies and spare tires, but the quantity is situation-dependent |
| How often should I service for sand? | The exact manual’s severe-use schedule | The 2026 RZR Pro R manual classifies frequent sand use as severe duty; that schedule must not be generalized to another model |
A properly prepared desert side-by-side is not defined by one tire pressure, tire brand or accessory list. It is a vehicle-specific setup matched to a legal route, checked before loading, adjusted cautiously, equipped for visibility and occupants, and maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions for the actual severity of use.
