Set up the electric G-Class by confirming the exact model year and market manual first, then checking its 265/60 R18 tire specification, learning the factory off-road controls, and planning around the correct water and clearance limits. The Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology has four individually controlled electric motors, torque-vectoring virtual differential-lock behavior, selectable LOW RANGE, and functions including G-TURN, G-STEERING and intelligent off-road crawl. Those systems improve control; they do not remove the need to assess terrain, water flow, space and recovery risk.
Do not combine figures from different markets into one specification. The 2025 Canadian operator’s manual gives a 27.6-inch (70-centimeter) maximum fording depth for this model, while United States Mercedes-Benz newsroom material states 33.5 inches. Use the manual supplied for your vehicle and treat the lower, vehicle-specific figure as the safer planning reference when documentation is unclear.

1. Confirm which electric G-Class you are preparing
“Electric G-Class” refers here to the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. Before changing settings or buying equipment, record the vehicle’s model year, sales market and wheel-and-tire configuration. Mercedes-Benz publishes market- and edition-specific operator manuals, and the numbers or control descriptions in one market’s material may not match another’s.

Use the vehicle’s own operator’s manual as the authority
The United States vehicle information explicitly says: “Read Operator’s Manual before driving off-road.” That is more than a disclaimer. The manual for your vehicle is where you verify the exact LOW RANGE procedure, warnings, instrument-display messages, water-crossing limits, tire pressures and any restrictions for the installed wheels, tires and optional equipment.

Why the market distinction matters
Official Mercedes-Benz material gives different fording figures. The 2025 Canadian-market manual specifies 27.6 inches (70 centimeters) for the G 580 with EQ Technology. United States newsroom material states a maximum fording depth of 33.5 inches. These are not interchangeable measurements for every G 580. They may reflect different documentation contexts, test conditions or market specifications, so the applicable manual takes precedence.
2. Check the factory wheels and tires without guessing at upgrades
Start with the published size
Mercedes-Benz technical data lists 265/60 R18 tires for the G 580 with EQ Technology. This is the factory size specification, not an endorsement of every tire sold in that size and not a recommendation to fit a particular all-terrain pattern.

How to choose a replacement responsibly
- Read the tire and wheel information on your vehicle and in its manual, including the permitted sizes and pressure values.
- Shortlist tires that retain the required load and speed ratings and are physically compatible with the wheel.
- Check full-lock clearance and suspension clearance with the exact wheel-and-tire combination; do not assume that the same nominal size has the same casing dimensions.
- Ask the tire manufacturer or a qualified installer to confirm approval for the G 580 with EQ Technology in your market.
- Carry a pressure gauge and inflation method appropriate to the vehicle, but change pressure only within the manual’s guidance.
A larger or more aggressive tread can alter steering feel, noise, energy consumption, clearance and electronic-system behavior. Without an approval statement for the exact vehicle, it is an experiment rather than a verified setup.
3. Learn what the electric drivetrain can and cannot do
Four individually controlled motors
Mercedes-Benz describes four individually controlled electric motors. Instead of mechanically locking conventional differentials, the vehicle can create virtual differential-lock behavior through torque vectoring. The newsroom description presents that behavior as automatic. Do not search for a traditional front- or rear-differential-lock lever unless your own manual specifically shows one.
Torque vectoring can direct drive torque where it is useful when wheels have different levels of grip. It does not create traction on a surface that has no usable friction, and it cannot compensate for a tire that is overloaded, damaged or incorrectly fitted.
LOW RANGE
LOW RANGE provides selectable off-road gear reduction for controlled, slow-speed work. Use the exact engagement conditions, speed limits and display prompts in your manual; the supplied material does not establish one universal button sequence for every market or model year.

Before entering a technical section, select the appropriate range while stopped or moving only as the manual allows, confirm the instrument display shows the requested state, and test the accelerator response in a safe area. If the system refuses a change, stop and read the displayed message instead of repeatedly forcing the control.
G-STEERING and intelligent off-road crawl
Mercedes-Benz also identifies G-STEERING and an intelligent off-road crawl function. Their exact availability, activation path and operating limits are vehicle- and manual-dependent. Treat them as aids for low-speed maneuvering, not as substitutes for choosing a line, checking obstacles or controlling wheel slip.
4. Build the setup in a deliberate sequence
The following sequence separates verified vehicle facts from prudent preparation. Where the manual gives a different instruction, its instruction wins.
Step 1: Inspect the vehicle before loading it
- Walk around the G 580 and look for sidewall cuts, bulges, exposed cords, damaged wheels or objects trapped in the tread.
- Check that the charging-port door, underbody panels and exterior trim are closed and secure.
- Remove loose items from the cabin and luggage area. Secure recovery, communication and first-aid equipment so it cannot become a projectile.
- Confirm the vehicle is within its permitted load and axle limits. Ground clearance and handling change as payload increases.
Step 2: Confirm pressures and ratings
Read the pressure label and manual for the actual vehicle. Set pressures when the tires are cold, using a reliable gauge. The available official sources do not establish a separate off-road pressure number, so do not copy a figure from another G-Class, tire brand or online forum.
Step 3: Plan the route around the documented limits
Review maps, land-access rules, weather and the ability to turn around. Mark water crossings, steep grades, side slopes, narrow ledges and sections where a disabled vehicle could block the route. A route that is technically within a published capability figure may still be unsuitable because of loose rock, hidden holes, current, vehicle load or lack of recovery access.
Step 4: Select the off-road controls before the obstacle
Choose LOW RANGE or another permitted off-road function before the climb, descent or crossing begins. Verify the mode on the display and keep both hands available for steering. Avoid changing settings halfway through an obstacle unless the manual specifically permits it and the vehicle is stable.
Step 5: Brief every driver
Explain accelerator sensitivity, regenerative-braking behavior as described by the manual, the selected range, the planned line and the stop signal. Only a driver who understands the vehicle’s limits and the terrain should operate it off-road; Mercedes-Benz gives the same qualification in its off-road guidance.

5. Understand the published clearance, water and slope figures
Fording depth: use the correct manual figure
The 2025 Canadian operator’s manual gives a 27.6-inch (70-centimeter) maximum fording depth for the G 580 with EQ Technology. The instruction applies to slow travel through standing water. It warns that flowing water reduces traction and therefore lowers the permissible depth. The manual also warns against exceeding the maximum, creating a bow wave and allowing water to accumulate during the crossing.
United States Mercedes-Benz newsroom material separately states 33.5 inches maximum fording depth. Because the official contexts differ, do not advertise 33.5 inches as a universal G 580 limit. If you cannot establish which figure applies to your vehicle, postpone the crossing until you can consult the correct manual or Mercedes-Benz support.
How to assess a crossing
- Stop before the water and inspect the entry, exit and bottom on foot only if doing so is safe and permitted.
- Check for current, drop-offs, submerged rocks, soft silt and an exit that can support the vehicle’s weight.
- Estimate the water level at the deepest point, allowing for waves from other vehicles and any change in the route.
- Use the applicable manual limit as a hard ceiling, not a target. Flowing water requires a lower permissible depth because available traction falls.
- Enter slowly and smoothly, avoiding a bow wave. Maintain the manual’s permitted speed and do not stop where water could accumulate around the vehicle.
- After exiting, check the vehicle for debris or damage and follow the manual’s post-water inspection guidance.
Ground clearance has more than one published definition
Mercedes-Benz newsroom material states 9.8 inches of ground clearance between the axles. A May 2026 Canadian G-Class SUV electric MBUX Owner’s Manual lists 9.2 inches (233 millimeters) minimum ground clearance. The Canadian manual notes that dimensions can vary with tires, wheel diameter, load and special equipment.
These figures should not be treated as contradictory promises. “Between axles” describes a particular measurement location, while “minimum ground clearance” identifies the lowest relevant clearance under the stated configuration. Use the measurement and conditions in your own manual when judging a rock, rut or crest.
Gradeability and side-slope stability
United States newsroom material reports up to 100 percent gradeability on suitable surfaces and lateral stability on slopes up to 35 degrees. “Up to” and “suitable surfaces” are essential qualifications. A wet clay slope, loose gravel, off-camber rut, uneven load or inappropriate tire can reduce usable grip well before those numbers are reached. Keep the vehicle straight where possible, avoid abrupt steering and select a safer bypass if the surface does not support controlled progress.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches6. Use G-TURN only in its stated conditions
G-TURN is not a general-purpose parking maneuver. Mercedes-Benz states that it is an off-road function for loose or low-friction surfaces where there is enough space for the vehicle to rotate. The driver remains responsible for checking the surroundings and surface before initiating it.
Pre-use checklist
- Confirm that the manual for your vehicle authorizes the function and gives the correct activation procedure.
- Use only loose or low-friction ground, never ordinary pavement unless the manual explicitly permits a specific surface.
- Walk or otherwise verify the full rotation area, including hidden rocks, drop-offs, people, animals and nearby vehicles.
- Allow more room than the vehicle’s apparent footprint; the body, mirrors and tires follow different paths while rotating.
- Stop immediately if the surface grips unexpectedly, an obstacle enters the path or the vehicle does not respond as the manual describes.
G-TURN can help reposition the vehicle in a suitable open area, but it does not make a narrow trail, crowded campsite or steep edge safe.

7. Recovery planning: what is not established
The official material reviewed for this setup does not identify rated recovery points, winch capacity, an approved winching method or a universal recovery procedure for the G 580 with EQ Technology. It also does not establish a tire-pressure setting for off-road use.
Do not attach a strap, winch line or shackles to a tow eye, suspension component or other point merely because it looks strong. Before carrying recovery hardware, obtain the exact vehicle’s rated-point and method information from Mercedes-Benz documentation or a qualified professional. If that information is unavailable, plan routes where self-recovery is unnecessary and travel with a trained recovery operator.

- Tell someone the route, expected return time and vehicle identification.
- Carry communication equipment that works where you intend to drive.
- Bring suitable lighting, first aid and weather-appropriate clothing.
- Know where a safe turnaround exists before committing to a one-way section.
- Never let bystanders stand inside a straight-line recovery path or near a loaded line.
8. Driving technique for the electric G-Class
Use smooth inputs
Electric motors can deliver torque immediately. Apply the accelerator progressively so the tires stay within the available grip. A sudden input can break traction on rock, mud or wet grass even when the drivetrain has ample theoretical capability.
Look beyond the hood
Have a spotter guide difficult sections when visibility is limited. Stop before a crest, dip or blind turn and inspect the next section. Keep the wheels as straight as the terrain allows; unnecessary steering increases scrub and can reduce forward progress.
Control descents deliberately
Select the range or crawl function permitted by the manual before descending. Maintain a speed that lets you stop within the visible distance, and avoid alternating sharply between accelerator and brake. If wheel slip or a warning appears, stop in a stable position and consult the display and manual.
Protect the battery and underbody
Stay on the planned line and avoid impacts that could damage the battery enclosure or underbody. The supplied material does not state a universal underbody-protection package or a water-sealing service procedure, so inspect for damage after contact or a deep crossing and seek qualified service if anything is bent, leaking or warning lights appear.

10. Capability figures at a glance
| Capability or specification | Published figure or description | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Tire size | 265/60 R18 | Mercedes-Benz technical data; verify the size fitted to the individual vehicle. |
| Fording depth | 27.6 in (70 cm) | 2025 Canadian operator’s manual; slow travel through standing water. Flowing water lowers the permissible depth. |
| Fording depth | 33.5 in | United States Mercedes-Benz newsroom material; not a universal figure for every market or edition. |
| Minimum ground clearance | 9.2 in (233 mm) | May 2026 Canadian G-Class SUV electric MBUX Owner’s Manual; varies with tires, wheels, load and special equipment. |
| Ground clearance between axles | 9.8 in | United States Mercedes-Benz newsroom material; measurement context differs from minimum clearance. |
| Gradeability | Up to 100 percent | Manufacturer figure for suitable surfaces; actual grip depends on terrain, load and tires. |
| Lateral stability | Up to 35 degrees | Manufacturer-published capability; not a guarantee for every slope or surface. |
| Drive hardware | Four individually controlled electric motors | Torque vectoring provides virtual differential-lock behavior; the system does not eliminate traction limits. |
11. A practical decision rule for every obstacle
Proceed only when three conditions are all true: the obstacle is within the applicable manual limit, the surface offers enough grip for controlled movement, and you have a safe exit or turnaround. If any condition is uncertain, stop and reassess. A lower route, a different line or turning around is a successful off-road decision—not a failure of the vehicle.
