How to Set Tire Pressure for All-Terrain Tires on a Rivian R2

Use your Rivian R2’s driver-door placard for cold road pressure, a separate gauge for every adjustment and the current Owner’s Guide for off-road minimums. Learn the 4-psi warm-tire rule, the 31-psi 20-inch all-terrain reference, TPMS limits and safe reinflation steps.

For normal road driving, set every Rivian R2 all-terrain tire to the cold pressure printed on the vehicle’s driver-door tire-and-loading placard. Measure with a separate, accurate tire-pressure gauge; the R2’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is not a filling gauge. If you must check a warm tire, Rivian’s Owner’s Guide says to set it 4 psi (27 kPa) above the recommended cold placard pressure, then verify the pressure again after the tire has cooled.

Off-road pressure is a different setting. Rivian recommends airing down to improve traction and limit tire and trail damage, but the correct minimum depends on the R2 configuration, wheel and tire size, terrain and load. A Rivian all-terrain table cites 31 psi (214 kPa) as a recommended minimum for 20-inch all-terrain tires in Soft Sand and Rock Crawl modes; treat that figure as a reference from the cited table, not a universal R2 road or trail setting. Confirm the applicable value in the current R2 Owner’s Guide and on your vehicle before leaving pavement.

Use the door placard for road pressure

The driver-door tire-and-loading placard is the controlling source for your R2’s normal road pressure. It accounts for the vehicle’s approved wheel and tire combination and operating requirements. Because the value can vary by configuration, do not substitute a number found in a generic Rivian forum post, an all-terrain tire’s sidewall maximum, or another R2’s settings.

Read the placard with the driver’s door open and identify the recommended cold pressure for the front and rear positions. If the placard lists different values by axle, preserve that difference. Set each tire individually rather than applying one number to all four corners.

Rivian’s guidance also says replacement tires should match the size and style supplied for the vehicle. A nonstandard tire or wheel can change the appropriate pressure and may require qualified tire service before you drive normally.

Why “cold” pressure matters

Air pressure rises as a tire heats during driving and falls as it cools. The placard value is a cold-tire reference, so the most repeatable check is after the R2 has been parked long enough for the tires to cool. Check before a trip, not immediately after highway driving or a trail run.

If a pressure check cannot wait until the tires are cold, Rivian’s 2026 Owner’s Guide gives a specific temporary adjustment: set a warm tire to 4 psi (27 kPa) above the recommended cold placard pressure. Recheck it when cold and adjust to the placard value. This 4-psi allowance is not a new permanent target; it compensates for the heat in the tire during the interim measurement.

Routine road check with cooled tires Cold pressure on the driver-door placard Adjust each tire to its specified axle or position value.
Emergency check while tires are warm Placard cold value plus 4 psi (27 kPa) Use only until the tires cool, then verify and correct.
Off-road travel The applicable minimum in the current R2 guide and configuration Airing down is terrain- and setup-dependent; do not use the road placard as an off-road minimum without guidance.

Set road pressure: a precise procedure

  1. Confirm the setup. Check the wheel and tire size on the R2 and compare it with the driver-door tire-and-loading placard. Confirm that all four tires are the approved size and style. If a tire, wheel or spare is nonstandard, stop and obtain qualified advice before choosing a pressure.
  2. Let the tires cool. Park the vehicle and allow the tires to return to ambient temperature. A check made after a long drive is a warm reading and should be handled with the 4-psi temporary adjustment rather than treated as a cold reading.
  3. Remove the valve-stem cap. Keep the cap where it will not pick up dirt. The cap should be replaced immediately after the measurement and adjustment.
  4. Measure with a separate gauge. Press a digital or other reliable tire-pressure gauge squarely onto the valve stem and record the reading for each tire. Do not use the number shown by TPMS as the instrument used to fill the tire; Rivian states that the TPMS is not designed to be a pressure gauge.
  5. Add or release air. Use an inflator to add air or depress the valve core briefly to release it. Work in small increments, then measure again. Continue until every tire matches the placard’s cold value for its position.
  6. Inspect while you are there. Look for cuts, bulges, punctures, objects in the tread and a valve that leaks when the gauge is removed. A tire that is losing pressure or visibly damaged needs tire service, not repeated topping-up.
  7. Replace each valve cap. Rivian advises replacing the cap after checking pressure to keep dirt away from the valve and TPMS sensor.
  8. Store the readings. A simple note of the date, tire position and gauge reading makes a slow leak easier to identify at the next check.

How low to air down for off-road driving

Lowering pressure can enlarge the tire’s contact patch and let the tread conform to uneven ground. Rivian’s off-road guidance says to reduce tire pressure before going off road to improve traction, help prevent tire damage and minimize trail-surface wear. That benefit comes with a strict boundary: the pressure used on a trail is not automatically safe for public-road speed.

The 31 psi reference

A corroborating Rivian all-terrain table published in 2024 lists 31 psi (214 kPa) as a recommended minimum for 20-inch all-terrain tires in Soft Sand and Rock Crawl modes. The table is useful as a reference, but it does not establish that 31 psi is the correct minimum for every R2. The applicable R2 value must be confirmed in the current R2 Owner’s Guide for your wheel and tire configuration.

Match the setting to the actual conditions

  • Wheel and tire size: A pressure recommendation tied to 20-inch all-terrain tires should not be transferred to another wheel size or tire construction.
  • Terrain: Sand, rocks, snow and rough trails place different demands on sidewalls and traction. Use only the mode- and terrain-specific guidance that applies to your vehicle.
  • Vehicle load: Passengers, cargo and accessories alter the load carried by each tire. If the guide gives a load-related instruction, follow it rather than copying an unloaded vehicle’s setting.
  • Speed and surface: Low pressure is for controlled off-road travel. Avoid high speed, sharp impacts and long pavement sections while aired down.

Air down without creating a new hazard

  1. Stop on a stable, safe surface away from traffic and sharp debris.
  2. Record the cold road pressure before releasing air so you know the starting point.
  3. Release air in measured steps and check all four tires with the same gauge. Keep the axle-to-axle pattern required by the applicable guide.
  4. Inspect the sidewalls and tread after airing down. If a tire shows damage, loses pressure quickly or unseats from the bead, stop driving and arrange qualified recovery or tire service.
  5. Drive only within the off-road conditions for which the pressure is intended. Do not enter public roads at the trail minimum.

Reinflate before returning to pavement

Rivian explicitly instructs drivers to increase tire pressure before returning to the road and to use an air compressor. Plan the reinflation stop before the trail exit, not after joining traffic.

Carry a portable 12V inflator sized for four tires, a separate gauge and replacement valve caps. Let the compressor cool according to its instructions if it has a duty-cycle limit. Measure each tire as you work, because a compressor’s displayed pressure is not a substitute for a reading at the valve stem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Park on a level, protected surface and inspect the tires for cuts, sidewall pinches, embedded rocks or other damage.
  2. Connect the inflator securely to the first valve and add air in short runs.
  3. Check the pressure with the independent gauge, then continue until the tire reaches its cold placard value. If the tire is still warm from the trail, use the Owner’s Guide’s 4-psi-above-cold instruction as the temporary target and verify again when cool.
  4. Repeat for all tires, preserving any front/rear difference on the placard.
  5. Replace valve caps, stow the equipment and make sure no tire is visibly damaged before driving onto pavement.

Why the TPMS number may not match your gauge

TPMS is a warning and monitoring system, not the device Rivian specifies for setting pressure. Its displayed value can differ from a handheld gauge because the tire may be warming or cooling, the two instruments may have different measurement tolerances, or the vehicle may not yet have updated its sensor information.

After a wheel or spare change, drive as directed so the sensors can update; Rivian’s tow guide says this can take up to 10 minutes. A compact spare without a TPMS sensor will not display a pressure reading. During this update period, rely on the gauge and the placard rather than trying to make the dashboard number your filling target.

Common mistakes and the correct fix

Using a generic PSI found online

Online numbers may describe a different Rivian model, wheel size, tire, load or terrain. Replace the generic number with the value on your own door placard for road use, and consult the current R2 guide for off-road minimums.

Setting pressure to the tire sidewall maximum

The maximum molded on a tire is a tire-limit marking, not the R2’s recommended operating pressure. The vehicle placard remains the road-setting authority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checking immediately after a drive and bleeding to the placard value

A warm tire naturally reads higher. Bleeding it down to the cold placard number while hot can leave it underinflated after it cools. Use the 4-psi warm adjustment and perform a cold verification instead.

Driving back to town while still aired down

Off-road pressure is not a public-road setting. Reinflate before pavement, as Rivian directs, and inspect the tires before increasing speed.

Assuming TPMS proves the tire is correctly filled

TPMS may lag or show a value affected by temperature and sensor behavior. Use a separate gauge for adjustment and treat TPMS as a monitoring aid.

Ignoring a slow leak

Repeatedly adding air without finding the cause can turn a puncture, valve problem or wheel issue into a loss-of-control risk. Stop and obtain qualified tire service if pressure falls again, the tire is damaged or the size is nonstandard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Equipment worth carrying

  • Digital tire-pressure gauge: Provides the independent measurement Rivian’s guidance calls for.
  • Portable 12V air compressor: Needed to reinflate after airing down; choose one appropriate for four vehicle tires and follow its duty-cycle instructions.
  • Valve-stem caps: Replace a missing or damaged cap to keep contamination away from the valve and sensor.
  • Pressure log: Recording each tire’s reading helps identify a slow leak and confirms that all positions were checked.

When to stop and get professional help

Do not continue driving if a tire is losing pressure, has a cut, bulge, exposed cord, bead problem or other visible damage. Seek qualified tire service for a nonstandard wheel or tire, a persistent TPMS warning, a sensor that will not update after the instructed drive, or uncertainty about an off-road pressure for your exact configuration. The safe choice is to restore the vehicle to an approved tire and wheel setup and use the current Rivian documentation for its pressure.

A simple decision process before every trip

  1. Read the driver-door placard and note the cold pressure for each axle.
  2. Check all four tires with a separate gauge while cold whenever possible.
  3. Set road pressure to the placard; if warm, use the temporary 4-psi-above-cold instruction and recheck later.
  4. For a trail, verify the current R2 off-road guidance for your wheel, tire, terrain and load before airing down.
  5. Carry a gauge and compressor, monitor the tires on the trail and inspect for damage.
  6. Reinflate to the road setting before pavement, replace valve caps and allow TPMS time to update after wheel or spare changes.
