There is no universal percentage that suits every EV or household.
When the battery reaches the reserve threshold, the vehicle-to-home system stops discharging or otherwise protects the remaining energy, depending on the vehicle and equipment. The correct setting depends on your EV, model year, home-integration hardware, expected outage, household loads and how soon you must drive.

What a charging limit means during vehicle-to-home backup
In ordinary EV use, “charging limit” usually means the maximum state of charge allowed while the vehicle is plugged in. During vehicle-to-home (V2H) backup, the setting that matters most is usually the energy reserve: the amount of battery energy the system protects for driving.

Power flows from the EV to selected home circuits until the system reaches its reserve rule. Raising the reserve leaves more energy available for driving and less for the house. Lowering it gives the home access to more of the battery but increases the risk that you will not have enough range when you need to leave.

The stopping behavior is system-specific. Ford’s 2025 F-150 Lightning manual describes an energy-reserve amount tied to a selected driving range or the nearest available charging station. GM’s V2H owner guidance says its system stops sending power to the home when the EV reaches the vehicle’s range-reserve percentage. Those instructions should not be treated as universal menu behavior for other vehicles.
Choose the reserve from the trip you must still make
Start with a destination, not a percentage. Decide where the vehicle must be able to go if the outage continues: work, school, a medical appointment, an open charging station or another essential location. Include the return trip if charging there is uncertain.
- Identify the next essential drive. Write down the destination, distance and whether you can reliably charge there.
- Add a practical margin. Account for weather, traffic, elevation, towing, heating or air-conditioning use and the possibility that the nearest charger is unavailable. The vehicle’s own range estimate and owner’s manual should determine how you translate that trip into a reserve setting.
- Set the reserve in the V2H controls. Use the vehicle app, touchscreen or energy-management interface specified for your system.
- Recheck after the plan changes. A later departure, a longer trip or a larger household load can make yesterday’s reserve inadequate.
For a short, predictable outage when the EV will not move, a lower reserve may allow more backup energy to the home. For a storm, evacuation risk or an outage with uncertain duration, a higher reserve is the safer choice. The manufacturers cited here do not prescribe one percentage for every household, so a precise universal number would be misleading.
Ford and GM use different equipment and controls
The table below shows what the cited manufacturer materials establish. It is a comparison of named systems, not a compatibility list for every EV.

Model year, regional equipment and installation rules matter. A reserve menu on one EV does not prove that the vehicle can export power to a house, and a bidirectional charger without the required vehicle or home controls will not create a working V2H system.

Step-by-step: set a safe reserve before an outage
1. Confirm that the EV is actually V2H-capable
Check the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s compatibility information for your exact model year and market. Confirm that the vehicle supports bidirectional discharge and that your home has the required charger, transfer equipment, integration hardware and electrical approvals.
2. Decide which circuits must stay powered
List essential loads such as refrigeration, communications, medical equipment, heating controls or a sump pump. Your installer or system documentation should identify which circuits are connected to backup. Do not assume that every receptacle or appliance in the house is supplied.

3. Define the driving reserve
Choose the range needed for your next essential trip or for reaching a charging station. If the outage could prevent charging elsewhere, use the more demanding destination. Treat the reserve as a protected floor, not as energy that is guaranteed to be available for every appliance.
4. Select the transfer mode
Use the mode described for your system. Automatic operation is intended to respond to a qualifying outage; Manual operation requires the user to initiate or manage transfer; Off disables the backup function. On the 2025 F-150 Lightning, Ford specifically warns that Off mode will not recognize or notify you of an outage.
5. Enter and verify the reserve
Save the reserve in the app, touchscreen or vehicle interface. Confirm that the displayed value matches your plan and that the vehicle is communicating with the charger and home-integration equipment.

6. Revisit it when conditions change
Change the reserve when your departure time, destination, weather, expected outage or household load changes. Before a predicted outage, verify the vehicle’s current state of charge and make sure it is plugged in as required by the system.
2025 Ford F-150 Lightning: where to set the reserve
Ford’s 2025 F-150 Lightning Owner’s Manual places the relevant controls under Home Backup Power Settings. The manual says the settings are available through the Ford app or the vehicle touchscreen.
- Open the Home Backup Power controls in the Ford app or on the touchscreen.
- Choose Automatic, Manual or Off for power transfer, according to how you want the system to respond.
- Set the energy-reserve amount so the truck retains enough energy to drive within the range you selected or reach the nearest available charging station.
- Confirm that the Lightning is paired with the Charge Station Pro, connected to the separately purchased Home Integration System and plugged in.
- After saving the setting, check that the system shows the expected backup status. If you choose Off, do not expect outage recognition or notification.
These steps describe Ford’s 2025 Lightning system only. The labels and behavior can differ on another Ford model, another model year or a vehicle sold in another market.
GM V2H: how the reserve stops home discharge
GM’s V2H owner guidance uses the vehicle’s battery-reserve level as the stopping point. In practical terms, the EV can discharge to the home until its state of charge reaches the reserve percentage configured for the vehicle or system; home discharge then stops to protect that remaining energy.
- Verify that the EV is a compatible bidirectional GM model and that the PowerShift Charger, V2H Enablement Kit and home equipment are installed.
- Open the vehicle or system control that displays the battery-reserve level.
- Set the reserve to cover the range you need after the outage, including the route to a dependable charging location if necessary.
- Check the reserve again before an outage begins and after changing the planned departure or backed-up loads.
- During the outage, watch the vehicle state of charge and the home’s active loads. Once the reserve is reached, the system’s documented behavior is to stop sending power to the home.
GM’s instructions apply to its V2H equipment and should not be used as a generic procedure for another make or charger.

How much of the house can an EV run?
GM states that its V2H Bundle can discharge up to 9.6 kW to a properly equipped home. That is the manufacturer’s maximum output for that system, not a promise that all household appliances can operate simultaneously.
Whether the backup remains stable depends on the loads connected to the backed-up panel. A refrigerator, internet equipment and lights typically present a different demand from electric resistance heating, central air conditioning, an electric water heater, an induction range or an EV charging another vehicle. Starting surges can also matter. Your electrical design and the system’s load-management rules determine what can run together.
Backup duration is a separate question from maximum power. GM identifies these factors:
- the specific EV and its state of charge;
- the reserve you set for driving;
- which circuits are backed up;
- how much power those loads use over time; and
- battery health.
To improve runtime, prioritize essential circuits, avoid simultaneous high-demand appliances and follow the installer’s load-management guidance. Do not lower the driving reserve merely to make a large appliance run longer unless you have deliberately accepted the reduced escape range.

A reserve control cannot turn a conventional EV charger into a home-power system. Before relying on V2H, verify all of the following:

- Vehicle: exact make, model, model year and bidirectional-power approval for your market.

- Home integration: transfer, isolation and control equipment that separates the home from the utility grid when required.
- Electrical service: a properly equipped backup panel and circuits sized for the intended loads.
- Grid interconnection: utility approval, permits and inspection where required by local rules.

Ford’s cited setup requires the Charge Station Pro and a separately purchased Home Integration System. GM identifies a compatible bidirectional EV, PowerShift Charger, V2H Enablement Kit, a properly equipped home and proper grid interconnection. Confirm the exact installation package before purchase; equipment names and eligibility are not interchangeable.
Reserve choices for common outage situations

The table gives planning logic, not manufacturer-prescribed percentages. Translate each situation into the range your vehicle and manual support.
Troubleshooting reserve and backup problems
The home does not receive power during an outage
- Check whether the backup mode is set to Off. On the 2025 F-150 Lightning, Off mode does not recognize or notify you of an outage.
- Confirm that the EV is plugged in and paired with the required charger and home-integration equipment.
- Check whether the utility outage qualifies for the system’s automatic transfer behavior.
- Review installer instructions before operating any manual transfer controls.
Discharge stops sooner than expected
- Look at the vehicle’s state of charge and the configured reserve; the system may have reached its protected driving floor.
- Check whether high-demand appliances or starting surges consumed energy faster than expected.
- Confirm that battery-health information, temperature and the backed-up circuit list have not changed.
You cannot find a reserve setting
Search the owner’s manual for terms such as “energy reserve,” “range reserve,” “Home Backup Power” or “V2H.” Menu names differ by vehicle and model year. If the manual does not document bidirectional home power, do not assume a normal charging-limit control provides it.

Keep the driving reserve as the safety boundary you selected. Reduce nonessential household loads, switch off high-demand appliances and use another approved backup source if available. Do not bypass the system’s reserve protection or alter wiring without a qualified installer.
A practical pre-outage checklist
- Record the next essential destination and the charging station you would use.
- Set the reserve from that range requirement, not from a generic percentage found online.
- Confirm the EV, charger, home-integration equipment and grid interconnection are compatible.
- Verify the transfer mode and understand whether it is Automatic, Manual or Off.
- Know which home circuits are backed up and which large appliances must be managed.
- Check the vehicle’s state of charge, plug connection and communication status.
- Recheck the reserve after changing travel plans, expected outage length or household loads.
Bottom line
Set the reserve to the driving range you must retain, then let the V2H system use only the energy above that floor. The right value is vehicle- and situation-specific: Ford’s 2025 F-150 Lightning and GM’s V2H equipment illustrate the principle but do not establish a universal percentage. Confirm compatibility and installation requirements first, and manage household loads because maximum discharge power does not determine how long the battery will last.
