To set an AM preset, select the AM band, tune to the station, then press and hold an available preset button or use the radio’s Save, Favorite, or Add to Favorites control. To find stations, use Seek for the next receivable signal or Scan to preview several stations. Button names, scan behavior, and preset capacity vary by radio model, so use the procedure below as a model-agnostic guide and confirm the final control in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
Know what each AM-radio control does
Car radios commonly provide four different ways to tune and recall stations. They may appear as physical buttons, steering-wheel controls, touchscreen icons, or a mixture of all three. Knowing the difference prevents the most common mistake: expecting Scan to save a station or expecting Seek to preview every station in the band.

The Ford owner’s instructions treat manual tuning, Seek, and Scan as separate functions, while vehicle systems from other manufacturers may put those functions behind different icons or menus. If your display uses a different label, look for wording such as AM, Favorites, Save, Store, Auto Store, or Preset.

- Park the vehicle before navigating menus or holding buttons for several seconds.
- Turn the ignition and audio system on, and select the radio source rather than Bluetooth, USB, or another input.
- Identify whether the system has one AM list or separate AM groups. Some receivers divide stations into pages or banks of presets.
- Have the desired station’s frequency available if you know it. Manual entry is usually faster than searching a crowded band.
- If you plan to preserve existing presets, avoid any control labeled Auto Store, Auto Memory, or Automatic Scan until you have checked what it does on your model.
How to set AM radio presets
1. Select the AM band
Open the radio source and choose AM. If the screen shows more than one AM group, select the group in which you want to save the station. A preset belongs to the active band or list; tuning an AM station while FM is selected will not create an AM preset.

2. Tune to the station
Use whichever tuning method matches your radio:
- Manual tuning: Tap the up or down tuning arrows, rotate the tuning knob, or use the radio’s manual-tune control until the desired frequency appears.
- Direct frequency entry: If the receiver offers a keypad or an “Enter frequency” command, type the station’s frequency and confirm. Kia’s current touchscreen instructions include both manual tuning and direct frequency entry; see the Kia radio instructions.
- Seek: Press the forward or backward Seek control once. The receiver searches for the next signal it can receive. Seek does not necessarily stop on every weak or noisy station.
Wait for the station audio and frequency to settle before saving. If the receiver displays a station name as well as a frequency, verify that the frequency is the one you intended; station names can be abbreviated or unavailable on AM.
3. Save the tuned station
Most radios use one of these storage methods:
- Numbered preset button: With the station playing, press and hold the desired numbered button until you hear a confirmation tone or see the frequency replace the old entry. A short press generally recalls an existing preset; the long press is what stores the current station.
- Touchscreen Favorite or Save control: Tap the star, heart, Save, or Add to Favorites control. Kia and Hyundai touchscreen systems describe adding the current station to a Favorites list; the labels and screen location can vary by software version. See the Hyundai radio instructions if your interface uses that layout.
- Scan-and-hold storage: Some receivers let you hold the Scan button while a station is playing. Mazda describes holding the scan button during the scan interval to retain a station. The exact timing and confirmation vary, so follow the procedure in the Mazda owner’s manual for that system.
Do not assume that pressing a preset once saves a station. On many radios, a short press only recalls what is already stored, and a long press is required to overwrite that slot.
4. Verify the preset
Change to another frequency, then press the new preset once. The radio should return to the saved station. If it does not, check that you saved in the intended AM group and that the Favorites list is not full. Kia warns that a full Favorites list can prevent additional stations from being saved; remove an unwanted entry or use another available slot.

How to scan for AM stations
Use Scan to preview stations
Select AM, then press Scan or tap the scan icon. The receiver will pause on stations in sequence. Kia’s AM scan instructions play each station for five seconds; that five-second interval is a feature of that Kia system, not a universal AM-radio standard. Other radios may use a different interval or scan stored presets instead of the entire band.
Watch the display while scanning. If the frequency changes through the full AM range, the receiver is performing a band scan. If it jumps only among frequencies you have already saved, it is performing a preset scan. Press Scan again, the source button, or the on-screen stop control to end the preview, depending on the receiver.
Use Seek for one station at a time
Press the forward or backward Seek control when you want the next receivable station rather than a timed preview. Seek stops when the tuner finds a signal that meets its reception threshold. Press it again to continue searching. Manual tuning remains the better choice for a station that is too weak for Seek or for a precise frequency that you already know.

Save a station discovered during a scan
- Start Scan and listen for a station you want.
- Stop the scan while that station is playing. If the receiver advances before you act, use Seek or manual tuning to return to the frequency.
- Save it with a long press on an empty preset or with the Favorite/Save command.
- Test the slot by switching away and recalling it once.
Scanning is for discovery; it does not automatically mean that every station will be stored. Automatic memory functions are a separate feature and can have destructive behavior.
Choose the tuning and saving method that fits your radio

How different radio systems handle presets and scanning
Touchscreen systems with Favorites
On a touchscreen receiver, select AM, tune the station, and look for a star or Favorites control near the frequency. Tap it to add the station, then open the Favorites list to confirm that it appears. If the list is full, delete an entry before trying again. The Kia instructions document this style of control and also describe a five-second AM scan interval.

Vehicles with numbered preset keys
With physical keys, the usual sequence is to tune first and then hold the chosen number until the radio confirms storage. The number of available slots is not a universal AM limit. It depends on the receiver and may differ between AM, FM, satellite, and other sources.
Receivers that store during Scan
A scan-and-hold design can save a station without requiring a separate preset menu. Mazda’s instructions describe holding the scan button during the interval to retain a station. Because this is not common to every receiver, do not hold Scan unless your manual identifies that action; on another model it may simply restart scanning or change the scan mode.

Receivers with separate AM memory groups
Some systems expose multiple AM pages or groups. Save each station while the intended group is selected, and check every group when a preset appears to be missing. A station saved in one group will not necessarily appear on another page.

Preset capacity and automatic memory warnings
Preset capacity is model-specific. One Harley-Davidson receiver manual states that its AM band can store six preset frequencies. That six-station capacity applies to that named receiver and should not be treated as a limit for car radios generally; consult your own manual for the number of slots.
Automatic memory can also change the contents of the radio. The Philips AJ260 manual says its automatic scan stores stations and erases previous presets. If preserving your current list matters, use manual saving instead, photograph or note the existing frequencies, or confirm the auto-store warning before starting.
Troubleshooting AM presets and scanning
The radio will not find the station
- Confirm that AM, not FM, is selected.
- Use manual tuning or direct frequency entry instead of Seek; a weak station may not meet the Seek threshold.
- Try the station outdoors or in a different location. AM reception can change with location and electrical interference.
- Check whether the frequency is in another AM group or page.
The preset did not save
- Hold the numbered key rather than tapping it. Wait for a tone, flash, or on-screen confirmation.
- On a touchscreen, tap Save, the star, or Add to Favorites while the station is still selected.
- Check that the Favorites list is not full, then remove an obsolete entry if necessary.
- Verify that you are saving to AM and not to an FM or other source’s preset page.
Pressing a preset recalls the wrong station
The slot was probably overwritten or the radio switched to a different preset bank. Select the correct AM group, tune the desired station again, and hold the intended slot until the receiver confirms the replacement. If several presets changed at once after using Auto Store, consult the model manual because that function may have erased the previous list.
Scan stops too quickly or skips stations
Scan is designed to preview, not to guarantee reception of every weak signal. Stop the scan and use manual tuning for a frequency it skipped. If the radio is cycling only through saved stations, you are using preset scan; switch to the band-scan command if your receiver offers both.
The controls do not match these steps
Do not force a button sequence from another vehicle. Different systems place Scan, Seek, and Favorites in different menus, and some use a long press where others use a touchscreen command. Search the owner’s manual for “AM radio,” “presets,” “Favorites,” “Scan,” or “Auto Store,” using the exact make, model, model year, and infotainment version. The Kia, Ford, Mazda, Hyundai, Harley-Davidson, and Philips examples above demonstrate variation rather than a universal layout.
