How to Secure Cargo Safely in a Van: A Practical Guide for Drivers

A practical guide to securing van cargo with safe loading order, restraint-system choices, ratchet-strap checks and multi-drop procedures for England, Scotland and Wales.

Secure van cargo by keeping the heaviest items low and evenly distributed, loading them toward an intact bulkhead where practical, and attaching large or heavy pieces to suitable vehicle anchor points. Put small loose items in containers, close avoidable gaps with suitable packing or barriers, protect the cab, and inspect the load again after every stop where cargo has been removed or moved.

The correct arrangement depends on the van, anchor points, cargo weight, shape and movement risk. There is no safe universal number of straps or single strap rating for an unspecified load. This guide follows current Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance for England, Scotland and Wales; other countries may apply different rules.

Why an unsecured van load is dangerous

Cargo that moves can change a van’s centre of gravity, reduce steering control and lengthen braking distances. In a collision or emergency stop, an item becomes a projectile. Even a box that seems manageable by hand can exert several times its static weight when the vehicle stops suddenly. A shifted load can also obstruct doors, damage the body, injure a person opening the rear doors or enter the cab.

DVSA states: “All loads carried on vehicles must be secure regardless of: what vehicle they’re on; the size or type of the load; the length of the journey.” HSE gives the workplace rule in similar terms: “Anything transported on or in a vehicle must be secured to the vehicle.”

More than 800 fatalities a year are attributed to unsecured loads in a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) figure. That is a US agency statistic, the page does not state the year, and it is not identified as van-specific, so it should not be treated as a UK van-fatality rate.

What the UK guidance covers—and what it does not

The DVSA manual “Securing loads on HGVs and goods vehicles” applies to England, Scotland and Wales. It was published on 20 July 2023 and updated on 24 September 2026. It is guidance rather than a legal document, but it explains how to meet duties arising under road-traffic and workplace-safety law. Your obligations depend on the vehicle, cargo, journey and circumstances; requirements elsewhere may differ.

Responsibilities on commercial jobs

  • Operators: provide suitable vehicles, anchorages, restraint equipment, instructions and training, and maintain them.
  • Drivers: check the load and equipment before departure and after changes. Do not proceed when you doubt the load’s security; report the problem and obtain a safe solution.
  • Consignors and loaders: present cargo in a stable condition and provide accurate information about weight, dimensions and handling hazards.

HSE expects goods to be stable when loaded, before lashings are applied. If a stack or item is unstable, put it in a box, stillage, frame or comparable structure and secure that structure to the vehicle. A strap is not a substitute for a stable load.

Pre-loading checks

Do these checks before lifting the first item. They prevent you from discovering a defect after the van is full.

  • Vehicle limits: confirm the van’s gross vehicle weight and each permitted axle load from its plate or handbook. Include the driver, passengers, fuel, tools, packaging and all cargo.
  • Floor and body: look for damage, oil, water, loose panels and anything that could reduce friction or puncture packaging.
  • Anchor points: check that each ring, rail or mounting point is designed for load restraint, firmly attached and free from deformation, corrosion or contamination. Never assume a tie-down point has the same capacity as one in another van.
  • Restraints: inspect webbing for cuts, pulled stitching, abrasion, chemical damage, burns or excessive fading. Check hooks, end fittings, ratchets and labels. Remove defective equipment from service.
  • Bulkhead and doors: verify that the bulkhead is intact, firmly mounted and has no opening through which cargo could enter the cab. Make sure doors can close and latch after loading.
  • Route and handling: consider steep roads, roundabouts, emergency braking, rough surfaces, multi-drop unloading, pedestrians and any need to work at height.

A safe loading sequence

  1. Plan the order. Put the last delivery where it can be reached without disturbing earlier cargo, while keeping the overall mass balanced. Decide where restraints will run before items block the anchor points.
  2. Load heavy items first and low. Place dense tools, machinery, cases and materials on the floor. Avoid a tall heavy stack that raises the centre of gravity. Keep weight distributed between the left and right sides and within axle limits.
  3. Work toward the bulkhead. Where the van and load permit, place cargo against the bulkhead so there is less room for forward movement. The bulkhead is protective only when it is strong enough, usable and free of gaps that admit cargo. Do not use it to justify exceeding the van’s limits.
  4. Make each item stable. Use a positive fit, blocking, packing or a suitable barrier to stop rolling, sliding and tipping. Chock round objects and protect fragile surfaces. Do not stack an unstable item merely because a strap will be added later.
  5. Contain small pieces. Put hand tools, fittings, parcels and offcuts in boxes, bins or other robust containers with secure closures. A container should itself be prevented from sliding or overturning.
  6. Attach large or heavy cargo. Route compatible lashings to rated vehicle anchor points, tighten them without damaging the load and keep hardware clear of sharp edges. Use edge protection where a strap bears on a corner.
  7. Control remaining gaps. Pack voids with suitable material or install a barrier when movement is possible. Do not use loose scrap, damaged cardboard or items that can become projectiles as packing.
  8. Check visibility and access. Nothing should block the driver’s view, controls, emergency equipment or a safe exit. Keep doors and any required ventilation paths usable.
  9. Close, test and recheck. Shut and latch every door, then push and pull the accessible cargo to detect movement. Re-tighten or redesign the restraint rather than accepting a load that shifts.

Designing a restraint system

DVSA describes a system as a combination of vehicle structure, physical barriers, lashings, friction matting or a high-friction surface. Select the combination for the actual load and van. The guidance says the system should withstand forces equivalent to the full weight of the load forward and half the load weight sideways and rearward. These are system-design forces, not a shortcut for choosing a casual strap count: the load mass, geometry, friction, angle, anchor capacity and every component’s condition must be known.

Method or equipment Useful for What it cannot do alone Checks before use
Ratchet lashing straps Securing many suitably shaped loads to vehicle anchor points They do not make an unstable stack safe, and a strap cannot compensate for an inadequate anchor or sharp unprotected edge Read lashing-capacity and standard-tension-force labels; inspect webbing, stitching, hooks and ratchet; protect edges; confirm anchor compatibility
Bulkhead or fixed barrier Limiting forward movement into the cab It does not restrain sideways or rearward movement and is ineffective if damaged or gapped Check strength, mounting, condition and openings; load so cargo cannot bypass it
Boxes, bins, stillages or frames Making loose or unstable pieces into one stable unit The container or frame still needs securing to the vehicle Use a sound structure, close or contain its contents, and restrain the structure
Friction matting or a high-friction surface Reducing sliding as part of a larger system It is not a complete restraint and cannot replace lashings, barriers or blocking Keep contact surfaces clean and dry; use only with a system designed for the load
Cover, sheet or net Containing light pieces and stopping items bouncing out It does not provide sufficient restraint for heavy cargo or stop all movement Use the appropriate cover or net and combine it with positive restraint
Cargo bar or restraint pole Some compatible van or refrigerated-vehicle layouts Not every bar fits every van or has the capacity for every load; it may not control all directions Confirm the vehicle mounting arrangement, rating, fit and manufacturer instructions

Using ratchet straps safely

Choose by capacity, not appearance

The label’s lashing capacity and standard tension force are key information. Match those figures to the load and the restraint arrangement, and account for the lowest-rated hook, ring, buckle, rail, stitching and connector in the load path. A wide or new-looking strap is not automatically stronger. Do not combine components when their ratings or intended use are unknown.

Route and tension the strap

  1. Place the load so the strap can resist the direction in which it could move, rather than merely lying over the top.
  2. Attach hooks to suitable vehicle anchor points; do not hook onto door handles, trim, seat fittings or an unverified body seam.
  3. Keep the webbing flat and untwisted. Protect it where it contacts a sharp, hot, abrasive or oily edge.
  4. Take up slack and tension the ratchet according to its design. Do not extend a handle with a pipe or apply force that can damage the mechanism.
  5. Secure the loose tail so it cannot flap, catch on a wheel or become a hazard. Ensure the ratchet cannot contact a surface that will release it.
  6. After tensioning, test the load for movement and inspect the strap again. Recheck it after the first part of the journey because vibration can settle packing and reduce tension.

Store straps dry and protected from sunlight, chemicals and crushing. A strap with damaged webbing, distorted hardware, failed stitching or an unreadable safety label should not return to service.

Protecting the cab and managing the bulkhead

An intact bulkhead is a critical last barrier between cargo and occupants. It should be strong enough to stop the load entering the cab during heavy braking and should not have gaps through which a box, pipe or tool can pass. Inspect its fasteners and joints, not just the visible panel.

Do not place long material where it can slide around the side of the bulkhead. If the load cannot be kept behind the barrier, use a suitable frame or other engineered restraint arrangement. Never rely on a cargo cover, a net intended only for light pieces, or the driver’s seat as a structural stop.

Rechecking after stops and partial unloading

Every delivery can change stability. Removing a heavy item may leave a void, move the centre of gravity toward one side or release tension in a strap that was holding several pieces together. At multi-drop stops:

  • Park safely before opening the rear or side doors and stand clear of a possible falling item.
  • Open cautiously and look for leaning, bulging or shifted cargo.
  • Unload the planned items without pulling against a strap or climbing on an unstable stack.
  • Repack remaining pieces, close new gaps and reposition or retension restraints.
  • Check axle distribution and that doors, visibility and emergency access remain satisfactory.

Do not continue simply because the load was secure at departure. A changed load is a new load to inspect.

Safe loading and unloading at a workplace

Loading plans should separate vehicles from pedestrians, provide enough space for handling, address manual-handling limits and control work at height and falling-object risks. Use a loading bay or level ground where possible, apply the parking brake and follow the site’s traffic plan. Do not stand in a crush zone between a reversing vehicle and a fixed object.

If a vehicle arrives with a shifted load, HSE says it must not be sent back onto the public highway. The site and operator should agree a safe way to unload or stabilise it, using appropriate equipment and people. Do not open doors fully, drive around to “settle” the cargo or ask a person to climb into a dangerous space.

Practical arrangements for common van cargo

Tools, cases and small parts

Use lidded boxes or bins, keep dense cases on the floor and restrain the boxes if they can slide. Separate sharp tools from fragile goods and prevent drawers from opening. A blanket or sheet can protect surfaces but is not a restraint.

Appliances, cabinets and other tall items

Keep the item upright only when its instructions and stability allow it. Place it on a level base, block it against tipping, protect corners and use lashings to control forward, lateral and rearward movement. Do not stack another heavy item on top unless the packaging and stability are designed for that load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pipes, timber and long sections

Bundle pieces, cap or protect ends and stop the bundle sliding lengthwise. Use a frame or suitable blocking where the van layout cannot prevent movement. Ensure no length can project into the cab, obstruct a door or exceed legal projection limits for the journey.

Loose parcels and mixed deliveries

Group parcels by route in robust containers or cages, place heavier groups below lighter ones and restrain each group against movement. Leave access for the next delivery without creating a freestanding wall that can topple when a lower parcel is removed.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • “The load is heavy, so it will stay put.” Weight increases the force in a stop. Add positive restraint and blocking.
  • Using a cover or friction mat alone. Treat it as containment or friction assistance within a complete system.
  • One strap over several unrelated items. Separate, containerise or block items so one moving piece cannot release the rest.
  • Ignoring the anchor rating. Verify the vehicle point and the weakest component; replace an unsuitable point or redesign the system.
  • Strapping over an unprotected sharp edge. Add edge protection or change the route; inspect the webbing after tensioning.
  • Filling the van to the roof. Reduce height, distribute mass and preserve visibility, door operation and a safe bulkhead.
  • Failing to recheck after unloading. Rebuild the restraint arrangement whenever the load or its gaps change.
  • Driving with a doubtful load. Stop in a safe place and obtain the equipment or assistance needed; a schedule does not make an insecure load acceptable.

Quick departure checklist

  • Gross and axle limits allow the complete load.
  • Heavy items are low, balanced and close to the bulkhead where practical.
  • The bulkhead is intact, secure and free of cargo-sized gaps.
  • Loose pieces are in containers or positively blocked.
  • Large and heavy items are attached to suitable rated anchor points.
  • Straps, hooks, ratchets, barriers and mats are compatible, undamaged and correctly fitted.
  • Sharp edges are protected and strap tails are secured.
  • Nothing blocks the driver’s view, controls, doors or emergency access.
  • All doors are closed and latched.
  • A recheck is scheduled after the first part of the journey and after every partial unload.

Choosing equipment for a particular van

Compare equipment on five points: compatibility with the van’s rated anchor arrangement; stated capacity versus the cargo’s mass and shape; the directions of movement it controls; condition, edge protection and ease of inspection; and how the system will work after partial unloading. Suitable categories include lashing straps, boxes or containers, compatible cargo bars or restraint poles, blocking materials and high-friction mats used with other restraints. Product descriptions that omit capacity, intended use or mounting compatibility are not enough to establish suitability.

For a van-specific search, “van ratchet straps” describes the relevant category, but the word “van” does not prove that a listing fits your anchor points or load. Check the label and the vehicle manufacturer’s information before purchase.

Bottom line for drivers

Load low, balance the weight, use the bulkhead correctly, contain small items and positively restrain heavy or large cargo to sound vehicle anchor points. Build a system that controls forward, sideways and rearward movement, inspect every component, and reassess the load after each delivery. If you cannot demonstrate that the cargo is stable and the restraint system is suitable for the actual van and load, do not drive until it is made safe.
