What to do before the first ride
The F 450 RR is a 420 cc, water-cooled, two-cylinder four-stroke motorcycle rated at 48 hp at 8,750 rpm. Its braking hardware is substantial—a 310 mm floating front disc with a Brembo four-piston fixed caliper, a 240 mm hydraulic rear disc with a one-piston floating caliper, and ABS Pro—but none of those specifications replaces the running-in procedure for a new engine or pads.

Find the correct handbook for your motorcycle
Do not copy an RPM ceiling from another BMW model, an older model year, or a forum post. BMW Motorrad’s handbook portal instructs owners to enter the vehicle chassis number (VIN) to find the exact model handbook. The VIN-specific book is the authority for the F 450 RR’s break-in RPM, throttle and load limits, inspection requirements, and any market-specific wording.

- Have the motorcycle’s VIN available from the steering-head plate, registration documents, or delivery paperwork.
- Open the BMW Motorrad owner-handbook portal and search by chassis number, or select the exact model from the model-selection screen.
- Save the handbook to your phone and keep an offline copy for the first rides.
- Read the running-in section, the engine-speed or gear guidance, the brake-pad warning, and the maintenance schedule before starting the engine.
If the handbook cannot be retrieved, postpone spirited riding and use conservative varying-speed riding only. The exact numeric limit remains unconfirmed until the VIN-specific handbook is available.

Complete the delivery checks
- Check engine oil level, coolant level, brake-fluid reservoirs, chain condition and adjustment, tire pressures, lights, mirrors, and fasteners according to the handbook.
- Make sure the front and rear brake levers have a firm, consistent feel and that the wheels turn freely without abnormal rubbing.
- Confirm that ABS Pro and the motorcycle’s warning lamps complete their normal self-check.
- Set controls and mirrors before moving. A rider should not be adjusting a lever, display, or navigation device while bedding in brakes.
- Plan a route with safe pull-off points, light traffic, changing gradients, and enough visibility to brake early.
How to run in the F 450 RR engine
BMW’s break-in instruction is simple but important: up to the first break-in inspection, vary the throttle opening and engine-speed range frequently and avoid riding for long periods at a constant speed. The goal is to vary engine load and speed within the limits printed in your handbook, not to hold one RPM for hours and not to treat the entire period as a low-speed endurance test.
Use changing engine load
On an open road, accelerate gently through several gears, hold a different moderate load for a short period, then roll off and let the motorcycle decelerate before repeating. Use the road’s natural rises and descents to change load without abrupt throttle movements. Keep every acceleration, roll-off, and gear change inside the handbook’s stated ceiling.
- Open the throttle progressively rather than snapping it fully open.
- Change gear before the engine is working hard at the upper end of the approved range.
- Do not lug the engine in a high gear at very low revs; select a lower gear when a hill or traffic demands more response.
- Allow the engine to warm normally before using higher portions of the permitted range. Avoid extended idling as a substitute for warming up.
- After a demanding section, use an easy section to let temperatures and load settle rather than stopping immediately after hard acceleration.
What RPM should you keep a new F 450 RR under?
There is no safe universal number to publish for every F 450 RR. BMW specifies the running-in ceiling in the handbook for the motorcycle identified by its VIN. The 8,750-rpm figure in the technical data is the engine’s listed peak-power speed, not a break-in recommendation and not permission to operate there during run-in.

Can you ride on the highway during break-in?
Highway riding is not automatically prohibited, but a long, uninterrupted, constant-speed run conflicts with BMW’s guidance. A highway can be used when traffic, weather, and the handbook’s RPM ceiling allow it, provided the route lets you vary speed and load safely.
Use these practices on a motorway or expressway:
- Choose a section with safe opportunities to change speed without disrupting traffic.
- Vary gears and throttle within legal speeds and the handbook’s engine-speed limit.
- Avoid setting cruise control for a prolonged, unchanging period during the run-in.
- Take regular breaks so you can inspect the motorcycle and avoid fatigue.
- Do not create an unsafe speed differential merely to vary RPM; traffic safety takes priority.
If the available highway requires hours at one steady speed, choose a different route for the early rides. Curvy or slightly hilly roads are useful because they naturally vary load, but only when sight lines, traction, traffic, and your own skill make them safe.
A practical sequence for the first rides
- Start gently. Confirm normal oil-pressure and warning-light behavior, then ride away without prolonged idling.
- Keep the first section light. Use moderate throttle and frequent but smooth gear changes while the motorcycle, tires, and rider settle in.
- Introduce variation. Alternate mild acceleration, steady moderate load, roll-off, and engine braking without exceeding the handbook’s limit.
- Use terrain intelligently. Let small rises, descents, and bends change the load; never use a steep hill to force the engine to work outside its permitted range.
- Increase workload gradually. As mileage accumulates, use more of the approved range only as the handbook allows. “More” means more variation within the ceiling, not repeated maximum acceleration.
- Inspect after the ride. Look for leaks, loose fasteners, unusual noises, chain issues, or changes in brake feel before riding again.
How to bed in the new brake pads
BMW warns that new brake pads do not initially provide their optimum friction force. Until they bed in, stopping distances can be longer. The required response is to brake earlier, leave a larger margin, and apply the controls smoothly and progressively.

Initial brake check
In a quiet, clean area, test the front and rear brakes at low speed before joining traffic. Confirm that each control builds pressure normally, the motorcycle tracks straight, and ABS does not activate unexpectedly on a dry, grippy surface. A soft lever, fluid leak, severe vibration, scraping, or a pull to one side is a reason to stop and have the motorcycle inspected rather than continue bedding.
Progressive bedding method
- Choose a safe surface. Use clean, dry pavement with good visibility and no pedestrians or traffic entering your path.
- Make gentle stops. From a modest speed, apply both brakes smoothly and progressively, stopping well before any hazard. Avoid grabbing the lever or locking the rear wheel.
- Allow cooling. Roll forward between applications so air can reach the discs. Do not hold the motorcycle stationary with the brakes clamped hard after a hot stop.
- Build pressure gradually. Repeat with slightly firmer applications while preserving a generous stopping margin. The lever should remain consistent and the motorcycle should stay stable.
- Use normal riding intervals. Alternate braking practice with easy riding so the pads and discs can cool. Do not perform repeated emergency-style stops.
- Finish with an inspection. Check for a normal lever feel, even pad contact, abnormal odors, smoke, fluid leakage, or a disc that appears damaged.
BMW’s published material for this motorcycle does not state a specific number of bedding stops or a mileage distance. Do not invent a target such as a fixed number of miles; judge readiness by consistent control feel and follow any additional procedure in the VIN-specific handbook or dealer instructions.
Braking during the first traffic rides
- Cover the front brake lever in dense traffic without resting unnecessary pressure on it.
- Look farther ahead and begin braking sooner than you normally would.
- Keep extra space from the vehicle ahead so a longer initial stopping distance does not become an emergency.
- Use both brakes in a coordinated, progressive manner; ABS Pro is a safety aid, not a substitute for following distance or traction.
- Be especially cautious on wet paint, gravel, leaves, metal covers, and other low-grip surfaces while the pads are new.
Choosing a route for engine and brake run-in
The best route lets you vary engine load while preserving a large safety margin for the new pads. Route shape alone is not a reason to ride quickly; a winding road with poor visibility or heavy traffic is a poor break-in environment.

The break-in inspection and included service
Schedule the included Ultimate Care Break-In Service with an authorized BMW Motorrad dealer. On the US F 450 RR model page, BMW calls this the “600 Mile Service” and states that it is included with each new 2027 BMW motorcycle. The same page gives a maximum window of six months from the in-service date or 750 miles, whichever comes first. A BMW US press release states that 2027 and 2028 motorcycles include the service as standard.
Those dates and limits are market- and model-year-specific. Confirm the applicable window for your motorcycle with the dealer, especially if it was sold outside the United States or has a different model year.

When to stop riding and seek inspection
Running in does not require tolerating a symptom that could indicate a defect. Stop in a safe place and contact an authorized BMW Motorrad dealer if you notice:
- A persistent oil, coolant, brake-fluid, or fuel leak.
- Oil-pressure, engine, ABS, or other warning lamps that remain illuminated after the normal startup check.
- New knocking, grinding, metallic rattling, severe vibration, or a sudden change in engine response.
- A brake lever that becomes soft, travels unusually far, pulses severely, or loses pressure.
- The motorcycle pulling to one side under braking, a wheel that does not spin normally, or a disc that shows heat discoloration or damage.
- Repeated ABS intervention under conditions that should not trigger it, or any electronic fault message.
- Overheating indications, coolant odor, or a temperature warning.
Do not attempt to cure a brake or engine symptom by riding farther to “finish” the break-in. Record the mileage, conditions, warning messages, and recent actions so the technician can diagnose the problem accurately.
A simple run-in record
A short log prevents missed deadlines and helps identify changes while the motorcycle is new. After each ride, note:

- The highest engine speed used, checked against the VIN-specific handbook limit.
- Any unusual noise, smell, vibration, warning lamp, or fluid trace.
- Brake lever feel and whether stopping remained straight and predictable.
- The next service appointment and the mileage or date remaining before the dealer window closes.
Keep the log with the handbook and dealer paperwork. It gives the technician useful context at the break-in inspection without replacing the manufacturer’s service records.

Get the VIN-specific handbook before deciding how high to rev the engine. During the run-in period, vary throttle opening, gears, speed, and load; avoid long constant-speed stretches; and choose roads that allow those changes without compromising traffic safety. Bed the pads with repeated smooth, progressively firmer stops and extra space, because BMW does not publish an F 450 RR-specific stop or mileage count for bedding. Finally, reserve the included dealer break-in service within the deadline that applies to your market and model year.
