Restore a Miura headlight in this order: identify the car’s year and market specification, select the matching factory wiring diagram, document every connection, repair the aluminum aperture, bench-check the lamps, renew only damaged terminals, and test the complete circuit before the nose is closed. The wiring is not identical across all Miuras. The period workshop material separates 1968–1969 non-North-American cars, 1968–1969 North-American cars, 1972-on non-North-American cars, and 1972-on North-American cars. It also shows different lamp arrangements by market, so a bulb or fuse chosen from a generic parts listing can be wrong for your car.
Start with the correct Miura wiring diagram
Do not disconnect the headlight harness until you know which diagram applies. Record the car’s P400, P400S, or SV designation, chassis and production information, and whether it is a North-American specification. Then match those facts to the diagram in a model-specific Miura workshop manual. The period manual’s index includes P400 wiring and headlight material, while P400S workshop references combine owner and technical instructions useful during maintenance and restoration.

The four diagram groups are:
| Car specification | Diagram group | What must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| 1968–1969, non-North-American | 1968–1969 non-North-American sheet | Twin-filament left and right headlight bulbs, circuit routing, grounds and fuse-box connections |
| 1968–1969, North-American | 1968–1969 North-American sheet | Sealed-beam left and right units, circuit routing, grounds and the diagram’s fuse specification |
| 1972-on, non-North-American | 1972-on non-North-American sheet | Lamp arrangement and circuit details for the later non-North-American specification |
| 1972-on, North-American | 1972-on North-American sheet | Lamp arrangement and circuit details for the later North-American specification |
“1972-on” is the period manual’s grouping; it is not a claim that every later chassis has the same harness. If a car has been converted, re-bodied, or rewired, treat its actual components and the applicable factory sheet as separate evidence. A previous owner may have installed a different lamp, added relays, moved a fuse, or substituted wire, so never infer the circuit from year alone.
Keep the manual beside the car
Use an original or reliable reproduction Miura workshop/wiring manual while working. The drawing’s component labels are more dependable than faded insulation colors. A period manual identifies the battery, lighting switch, headlight flasher and dimmer control or relay, fuse box, left and right headlight units, and ground straps. Those labels let you trace function even when a harness has been repaired previously.

Safety and preparation before disassembly
A Miura headlight combines live battery wiring, a metal body aperture and old insulation. Isolate the battery before removing terminals or probing an exposed connector. Support the nose and lamp assemblies so a loose bracket cannot drop onto the paint. If welding or grinding is required around the aperture, remove or shield wiring, lamps, trim and flammable material from the heat and sparks.
- Photograph the front of the car, each lamp from the rear, every connector, the fuse box and each ground strap before removing anything.
- Tag both ends of every wire. Use labels that remain legible after cleaning; a tag on only one end is not enough when several wires share a route.
- Record connector orientation, terminal position, fastener location and the direction of any grommet or bracket.
- Note additions that are not shown on the factory sheet, including inline fuses, non-original relays, crimp joints and extra grounds.
- Use a digital multimeter for continuity and voltage checks, suitable automotive test leads, terminal tools, contact cleaner, correctly sized terminals and heat-shrink or another automotive-grade joint covering.
Disconnecting the battery protects the harness, but it also erases the easiest reference for where a connector was seated. Photography and labeling are therefore part of the electrical work, not optional documentation.
Inspect and repair the headlight aperture first
The aperture is a structural restoration item. A lamp can be electrically perfect and still sit incorrectly if the thin aluminum around its opening is torn, distorted or weakened. A documented Miura restoration found a tear in the thin aluminum at the right headlight opening, welded in thicker replacement metal, and test-fitted the headlights before completing the final bodywork. That sequence is a useful standard for any damaged opening.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What to inspect
- Look for tears radiating from the opening, stretched or cracked rivet holes, loose brackets and distorted edges.
- Check for corrosion products, previous welds, filler hiding a crack, and fasteners that have pulled through the sheet.
- Inspect the lamp mounting points and the surrounding nose for evidence of a past impact or an opening that is no longer symmetrical.
- Check that the rear of the lamp has clearance for the socket, wiring and ground connection without pinching the harness.
Repair sequence
- Remove the lamp and protect the surrounding finish. Expose enough metal to see the full tear rather than welding over paint, filler or corrosion.
- Have a technician familiar with thin aluminum stabilize and repair the damaged area. The documented restoration used thicker replacement metal at the torn right opening; the correct thickness and method depend on the damage and the surrounding structure.
- Dress the repair without removing the metal needed for strength. Restore the edge, bracket position and fastener support rather than merely making the visible surface smooth.
- Test-fit the headlight, bezel and hardware before final filler, paint or sealing. Confirm that the lamp seats evenly, the trim follows the body line and the rear connections remain accessible.
- Only after the fit is correct should final bodywork and finish be completed.
Thin aluminum around a headlight opening is a poor place for improvised reinforcement. If the metal is torn, badly distorted or repeatedly cracking, use a classic-car body-restoration specialist rather than trying to compensate with extra tightening or a thicker random bracket.

Identify the lamp before ordering a bulb
Bulb type is market-dependent. The 1968–1969 non-North-American legend specifies a twin-filament bulb for the left headlight and another twin-filament bulb for the right headlight. The North-American legend specifies a sealed-beam unit on each side. These descriptions identify the arrangement shown by the diagram; they do not provide a universal modern bulb number for every chassis.
| Configuration shown in the period legend | Specified lamp description | Buying decision |
|---|---|---|
| 1968–1969 non-North-American | Twin filament bulb, left, for headlight; twin filament bulb, right, for headlight | Confirm the socket, filament arrangement and lamp housing before purchasing a twin-filament replacement |
| 1968–1969 North-American | Sealed beam unit, left; sealed beam unit, right | Confirm the sealed-beam housing and connector; do not substitute a twin-filament bulb without proving that the car has been converted |
| 1972-on diagrams | Use the lamp description on the applicable later-market sheet | Verify the actual housing and harness on the individual car before ordering |
No authoritative current parts catalog establishes one modern bulb number for every Miura chassis and market. Original-style units may preserve the appearance and focal position, while an available replacement must match the socket, focal position, wattage and connector used by the car. Read the marking on the existing lamp, compare the housing to the selected diagram and verify the fit on the bench before installation.
Trace the circuit by function
Once the body opening and lamp type are understood, trace the circuit in the same functional order shown by the drawing. The circuit is more than the lamp itself:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Battery feed: establish which battery supply reaches the lighting circuit and inspect the feed terminal for heat damage or looseness.
- Lighting switch: follow the supply into the lighting switch and identify the output that feeds the headlight control. Do not assume a wire’s color proves its destination.
- Flasher and dimmer control or relay: the manual labels a “Headlight flasher and dimmer relay.” Confirm whether the car uses the relay arrangement depicted on its sheet, and note any later conversion.
- Fuse box: identify the relevant fuse position, its incoming and outgoing terminals, and signs of overheating. A fuse that opens repeatedly indicates a fault; it is not a reason to install a larger fuse.
- Left and right headlight units: trace each side separately. Check the socket or sealed-beam connector, the terminal grip and the wire where it enters the lamp housing.
- Ground straps: follow the specified return path to the body or other ground point. Clean the contact surfaces and verify that a painted or corroded joint is not adding resistance.
Use the component names on the diagram while labeling the harness. If the drawing identifies a relay, fuse position or ground strap, write that function on the tag instead of relying on a color that may have faded, been painted, or been changed during an earlier repair.

Renew damaged connections without losing originality
Preserve original routing, clips, grommets and connectors wherever they are safe. Replace brittle insulation, overheated terminals, loose crimps and corroded contacts rather than preserving a failure for the sake of appearance. A clean, correctly sized automotive terminal is preferable to a loose original terminal that creates heat and voltage drop.
Terminal and harness procedure
- Remove oxidation with an appropriate contact-cleaning method and inspect the terminal under good light. If the spring tension is gone, replace the terminal rather than squeezing it repeatedly.
- Cut back only as far as needed to reach clean copper. If corrosion extends into the harness, splice in the correct conductor size and preserve the original route.
- Crimp with the proper tool for the terminal. A solder blob over a poor crimp does not restore mechanical strength and can make a rigid failure point.
- Protect the joint with automotive-grade heat-shrink or an equivalent method suited to the location. Keep repaired joints away from sharp edges and water paths.
- Secure the harness so it cannot rub on the aperture, bracket or lamp housing. Leave enough service loop for lamp removal without pulling the terminal.
Do not increase a fuse rating to cure a blown fuse. The higher rating can allow a damaged wire or connector to overheat before the fuse opens. Find the short, crushed wire, failed lamp, incorrect connection or bad relay that is causing the fault.
Verify the fuse specification for this particular car
The 1968–1969 North-American diagram states “All fuses: 8 amps.” That is a diagram-specific reference, not permission to fit 8-amp fuses to every Miura. Confirm the car’s market, the correct year diagram, the marking on its fuse box and any documented factory or specialist modification before replacing a fuse.
| Check | Why it matters | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Market and year diagram | Fuse information varies with the applicable sheet | Use the sheet that matches the car before selecting a fuse |
| Fuse-box label and position | A previous repair may have moved circuits or altered the box | Compare the physical box with the manual and document discrepancies |
| Fuse condition and holder | Heat damage can cause voltage loss even when the fuse is intact | Repair the holder or terminal if it is loose, discolored or overheated |
| Replacement rating | Oversizing removes the intended protection | Fit the verified rating; never up-rate a fuse to stop nuisance opening |
Bench-check the lamps and grounds
Test the lamps before they are installed in a freshly finished nose. Confirm that the lamp type agrees with the selected diagram, then inspect the socket or sealed-beam connector, reflector condition and ground path. A lamp that works on a bench but fails in the car can still have a poor body ground, a loose terminal or a harness that is pulled tight when the bezel is fitted.

- Inspect the socket for heat discoloration, spread contacts and evidence that a terminal has backed out.
- Clean the ground strap connection and the body contact area to bright, sound metal where appropriate, then protect it against renewed corrosion.
- Compare both sides for secure mounting and matching focal position. Do not force a lamp into a housing that is distorted.
For a twin-filament arrangement, identify which contact corresponds to each lighting function from the diagram and socket design. For a sealed-beam arrangement, verify the connector orientation and ground before energizing the unit. The manual’s legend is the authority for the car’s configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reconnect and test before closing the nose
Complete electrical tests with the battery isolated, then reconnect through the verified fuse and observe the circuit in stages. Keep the headlight assemblies accessible until every function and alignment check passes.
- With the battery disconnected, perform continuity checks from the relevant fuse-box output through the switch, flasher/dimmer control or relay, lamp connector and ground path. A continuity result is useful only when the circuit is isolated from unintended parallel paths.
- Inspect for an unintended connection to ground, a short between adjacent terminals or a wire trapped under a bracket.
- Reconnect the battery using the correct fuse. Stop immediately if a fuse opens, a terminal heats, insulation smells hot or smoke appears.
- Test the parking-light function if it shares the front lighting assembly, then test low beam, high beam and the headlight flasher function required by the applicable diagram.
- Measure voltage at the lamp under load and compare the result with the supply. A significant drop points to resistance in a switch, relay, fuse holder, connector, ground or undersized repair.
- Move the harness gently while the lamp is operating. Flicker identifies an intermittent terminal, broken conductor or poor ground that a static test may miss.
- Secure the nose and repeat the test. The final fastener position can change the harness strain or lamp alignment.
Symptoms and likely areas to inspect
| Symptom | First checks | Do not do |
|---|---|---|
| Both headlights dead | Battery feed, lighting switch, common fuse supply, flasher/dimmer control or relay and common ground points | Assume both lamps failed simultaneously or fit a larger fuse |
| One side dead | Side-specific connector, filament or sealed beam, terminal grip and ground strap | Swap wires based only on color |
| Low or yellow light | Voltage drop across fuse holder, switch, relay, connectors and ground; lamp condition and focal seating | Compensate by installing a higher-wattage lamp without checking the circuit |
| Fuse opens when lights are switched on | Pinched wire, shorted socket, incorrect lamp connection, failed relay or damaged harness | Increase the fuse rating |
| Flasher works but high/low beam does not, or vice versa | Headlight flasher/dimmer control or relay, its terminals and the function-specific lamp contacts | Bypass the control permanently without documenting the change |
| Light changes when the bezel is tightened | Harness strain, loose socket, poor ground or distorted aperture | Force the lamp into alignment with excessive fastener torque |
Set lamp alignment after the body repair
Alignment is a mechanical and bodywork task as well as an electrical one. With the car on a level surface, fit the lamp and trim using the repaired aperture and the original mounting points. Confirm that the lamp sits at the intended depth and angle, that the bezel follows the surrounding body line and that the rear wiring has clearance through the full range of adjustment.

Do not finalize paint or filler around an untested lamp. A headlight that is flush before tightening may move when the bracket is loaded, and a wiring loop that looks safe with the lamp loose can be pinched once the assembly is secured. Test the lights again after final tightening and after the nose is installed.

Originality versus serviceability
A sympathetic restoration keeps the original routing, connector style, clips and visible hardware when they remain electrically and mechanically sound. Serviceability takes priority over a cosmetic preservation of a dangerous fault. The practical compromise is to retain the original route and appearance while renewing hidden terminals, repairing damaged conductors, cleaning grounds and adding protection where the original insulation has failed.
- Preserve: factory routing, connector positions, grommet locations, lamp seating and documented ground straps that are in good condition.
- Renew: brittle insulation, overheated fuse holders, loose terminals, corroded grounds and damaged sockets.
- Document: any added relay, inline fuse, replacement connector or altered wire so a future owner can reconcile the harness with the factory drawing.
- Verify: that a replacement lamp has the correct socket, focal position and wattage for the applicable market arrangement.
When a specialist is the right choice
Careful owners can photograph, label, clean and continuity-test a harness. A specialist is the safer choice when the aluminum aperture is torn, when previous collision work has changed the opening, when the harness has been extensively modified, or when alignment cannot be achieved without stressing the body. A classic Lamborghini restoration specialist can combine thin-aluminum repair, lamp fit and period-correct finish; an automotive electrician can trace a modified harness against the factory sheet.
Give the specialist your chassis and production information, market specification, photographs, the selected diagram and a list of every non-original component you found. That prevents a repairer from assuming that a North-American sealed-beam arrangement or the 8-amp statement from the 1968–1969 North-American sheet applies to a different car.
