If Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) disengages, behaves unpredictably, or becomes unavailable, take control immediately and move to a safe place before touching the screen or investigating. Record the exact alert and circumstances, check the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle, contact Tesla service for a persistent fault, and file a safety complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) when the event indicates a broader safety concern. A recall lookup is a separate check and does not diagnose the car.
What Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is—and what it is not
Tesla’s current owner documentation calls the feature Full Self-Driving (Supervised). The name does not make the vehicle autonomous or transfer responsibility away from the driver. You must continuously watch the road and surrounding traffic, keep your attention available, and be ready to steer, brake, or otherwise intervene.

FSD can become unavailable, issue an alert, or disengage without indicating that the vehicle itself has suffered a mechanical failure. Conversely, an apparently minor alert can accompany a situation in which the driver must take over immediately. Treat every alert and unexpected maneuver as a driving event first and a troubleshooting question second.
Availability and behavior can differ by market, vehicle manufacture date, configuration, hardware, and software version. An instruction that applies to one model or software release may not apply to another. Use the manual for your exact vehicle and region rather than relying on a generic reset or a procedure copied from a different Tesla.

What to do the moment FSD disengages or acts unsafely
Do not investigate while moving. Your first objective is control of the vehicle, not preservation of the feature.
- Take over promptly. Hold the steering wheel and control speed and direction yourself. If the car begins an unsafe maneuver, brake or steer as needed to avoid traffic, pedestrians, obstacles, or a roadway departure.
- Disengage in a controlled way. Once you have control, move toward a safe stopping location when conditions permit. Tesla’s manual says that when intervention is required, it is best to safely disengage as soon as possible.
- Stop before using the touchscreen. Do not read alert details, change settings, clean a camera, or start a service request while driving.
- Check everyone’s condition. If there was a collision, near collision, injury, or immediate hazard, call emergency services and follow local reporting requirements before troubleshooting.
- Preserve evidence. If it is safe and lawful, keep relevant dashcam footage and note what happened while the sequence is still fresh.
“If Full Self-Driving (Supervised) disengages, an alert will appear on the touchscreen to notify you and a chime will sound. If this happens, take control of steering immediately.”
This instruction appears in Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual under “Full Self-Driving (Supervised).” A chime or screen message is not permission to delay taking control; the driver remains responsible even if the alert appears late or is difficult to interpret.

Build an incident record before contacting anyone
A precise record helps Tesla determine whether a vehicle-specific fault exists and gives a regulator enough context to evaluate a safety complaint. This is a practical documentation list, not a Tesla or NHTSA-required form.
- Date and local time: Include the time zone if the vehicle was traveling away from home.
- Location: Record the road, nearest intersection or mile marker, travel direction, and country or state.
- Road design: Note lane count, lane markings, merges, intersections, construction, unusual geometry, parked vehicles, or temporary signs.
- Conditions: Describe weather, lighting, glare, rain, fog, snow, visibility, traffic density, and the road surface.
- Vehicle identity: Include model, model year if known, configuration, and VIN when submitting a formal service request or complaint.
- Software and feature state: Record the software version if available and whether FSD (Supervised) was engaged, being enabled, or already unavailable.
- Exact alert wording: Copy the message character for character. Note the color, icon, and whether a chime or other sound occurred.
- Observed behavior: Describe what the car actually did—such as an unexpected lane change, braking event, failure to follow a curve, or sudden disengagement—without guessing at the cause.
- Your response: State when you took over, whether you steered or braked, and where you brought the vehicle to a stop.
- Evidence: Preserve available dashcam clips, photographs of the scene, and witness contact information. Keep the original files rather than only edited excerpts.
Separate observations from interpretations. “The vehicle crossed the lane line before I corrected” is more useful than “the camera failed,” unless a service technician has established that diagnosis.

Read the alert in the correct owner’s manual
Tesla manuals include an alert reference explaining what an alert means and listing troubleshooting steps. Open the manual for the relevant model, market, and software context. The Model S alert guidance, for example, is not a universal procedure for every Tesla.
Camera visibility is one possible reason Self-Driving features become unavailable. Dirt, moisture, snow, glare, darkness, or another obstruction can affect what the vehicle can see. However, the existence of a camera-related alert does not prove that camera obstruction caused a particular maneuver or disengagement. Confirm the message and follow the instructions attached to that alert.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe available guidance does not establish one reset, cleaning method, or repair that works across every model and software version. Do not disconnect hardware, repeatedly reboot the car, alter wiring, or experiment with a repair because an online post suggested it. If the alert persists, says service is required, or the vehicle may not be safe to drive, use Tesla’s service guidance instead of trying to force FSD back online.
When to contact Tesla service
Use Tesla’s official service channel when a fault repeats, a service warning remains, FSD is unavailable after the alert’s specified checks, or the car shows behavior that could indicate a vehicle problem. Service is the route for vehicle-specific diagnosis, repair, and maintenance; it is not a substitute for reporting a serious safety event to a regulator.
Information to include in the request
- The exact alert text and any accompanying chime.
- The incident record: time, location, road layout, conditions, and traffic context.
- The vehicle model, configuration, VIN, and software version if visible.
- Whether the issue occurs every time, intermittently, or only under particular conditions.
- What you did to regain control and whether the event caused a near collision, collision, property damage, or injury.
- Relevant dashcam files, with the date and time matched to the description.
Ask the service team to document the complaint accurately, including the alert wording and the driving behavior. If the problem is intermittent, provide multiple dated examples rather than describing it only as “FSD is bad.” Do not continue using the feature merely to reproduce a fault if doing so would expose people or property to unnecessary risk.

Check for recalls separately
A recall lookup can tell you whether a VIN is covered by a safety recall; it does not diagnose an individual FSD event. Check Tesla’s recall lookup by VIN and, in the United States, the NHTSA recall lookup when the symptoms could relate to a recall. Tesla’s support information for its described FSD Beta recall directs owners to VIN lookup tools.
Record the result, including whether the VIN is covered, the recall description, and any remedy status. A “no recalls found” result does not establish that the vehicle is safe or that the event did not occur. Likewise, a matching recall does not prove that it caused your specific incident; Tesla service must evaluate the vehicle and circumstances.
How to file a safety complaint with NHTSA in the United States
Anyone who witnesses a vehicle safety issue involving an automated-driving or driver-assistance feature can submit a complaint to NHTSA. Use the agency’s consumer vehicle-safety complaint process and describe the event in factual, chronological terms. You can also call the Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
What makes a complaint useful
- Identify the vehicle. Provide the make, model, model year, VIN if requested, and software version when known.
- Describe the trigger. Explain what FSD was doing, the road and weather conditions, and whether the feature had just been enabled or was already operating.
- Describe the failure. State the exact maneuver, alert, disengagement, or failure to respond. Avoid assigning a technical cause you cannot verify.
- Describe the outcome. Explain how you intervened and whether there was a crash, near miss, damage, or injury.
- Identify supporting material. Note available video, photographs, police records, service invoices, or witnesses and retain the originals.
- List prior contacts. Include Tesla service dates, repair orders, recurring alerts, and any recall result that bears on the event.
Submit one complete account rather than multiple contradictory versions. If you later obtain a service diagnosis or discover additional evidence, reference the original complaint when providing an update.
NHTSA complaints and manufacturer crash reporting are different
An individual consumer complaint is a direct report to NHTSA about a safety issue. It is separate from the agency’s Standing General Order, which requires identified manufacturers and operators to report specified crashes involving automated driving systems or Level 2 advanced driver-assistance systems. The Standing General Order is not a form that a private driver uses instead of filing a complaint.

Which path should you use?
| Need | Use | What it can do | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicle-specific diagnosis or repair | Tesla service | Review alerts, inspect the vehicle, document a fault, and perform applicable service | It does not replace a regulator complaint about a broader safety concern |
| Check whether the VIN is covered | Tesla or NHTSA recall lookup | Show recall coverage and remedy information associated with the VIN | It does not diagnose your incident or prove causation |
| Report a safety defect or dangerous behavior | NHTSA consumer complaint process or 888-327-4236 in the United States | Put your account in the regulator’s safety database for review | It does not provide roadside assistance or repair the vehicle |
| Immediate danger, collision, or injury | Emergency services and local authorities first | Address urgent safety, medical, and crash-response needs | It is not a substitute for later Tesla service or NHTSA reporting |
Common situations and the safest response
“FSD became unavailable before I started driving”
Read the exact alert while parked and consult the matching manual. A camera-visibility issue is one possible explanation, but availability can also depend on configuration, region, hardware, and software. Do not assume that cleaning one camera or restarting the vehicle will resolve every version of the problem. If the alert remains or requests service, contact Tesla.
“FSD disengaged during a trip”
Take control immediately, stop safely, and record the alert and conditions. Do not re-engage the feature solely to see whether the failure repeats. Provide Tesla with the event record and submit an NHTSA complaint if the behavior represented a safety issue, especially if there was a near collision, unexpected maneuver, or repeated pattern.
“The car made an unsafe maneuver but no alert appeared”
Treat the maneuver itself as the reportable event. Write down what happened, preserve video, and state that no alert was observed rather than inferring that none was generated. Contact Tesla for diagnosis and NHTSA for a safety complaint when appropriate.
“The same warning keeps returning”
Stop treating it as a one-time interruption. Compare each occurrence by date, location, weather, and software version, then attach the pattern to a Tesla service request. Repeated warnings or a service message warrant professional guidance rather than repeated experimentation.

“A recall appears to match the symptom”
Save the recall details and contact Tesla service. Continue to follow the recall remedy instructions and the vehicle’s manual. Do not conclude that the recall caused your event until the vehicle and incident have been evaluated.
Regional and vehicle differences matter
FSD operation and availability are not identical worldwide. Market rules, vehicle build date, installed hardware, software release, and configuration can change which features are offered and which alerts appear. NHTSA complaint procedures described here apply to the United States; other countries have their own transport-safety authorities and reporting channels.
Use the owner’s manual supplied for your vehicle and market, and identify that version in your notes. If Tesla’s current documentation changes after your incident, retain the alert text and the manual version or date you consulted so the timeline remains clear. The guidance summarized here was reviewed on October 13, 2026; software, manuals, recall status, investigations, and hotline information can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat not to do
- Do not look down at the touchscreen or type a report while the vehicle is moving.
- Do not treat FSD’s name as permission to stop supervising, sleep, use a phone, or delay intervention.
- Do not assume a camera obstruction, software bug, or hardware failure without evidence.
- Do not apply a universal reset or repair procedure from another model or software version.
- Do not keep driving a vehicle that displays a persistent service warning or may be unsafe; follow Tesla’s service guidance.
- Do not confuse a recall lookup with a diagnosis or a NHTSA complaint with a repair request.
- Do not edit or overwrite original video before creating a backup.
A concise incident template
When you are safely parked, you can organize your notes in this order:
- “On [date] at [time and time zone], I was driving [model/configuration] on [road and direction] in [weather and visibility].”
- “FSD (Supervised) was [engaged/being enabled/unavailable]. The exact alert was: ‘[copy the message].’”
- “The vehicle [describe the observable maneuver or disengagement].”
- “I [steered/braked/took over] and stopped at [safe location].”
- “The result was [near miss/crash/no contact], with [damage or injury details].”
- “Evidence available: [dashcam file names, photographs, witnesses, service records].”
Use the same factual description for Tesla and NHTSA, adding the information each organization requests. Consistency makes it easier to compare the service record with the regulatory complaint.
After you submit a report
Keep confirmation numbers, service appointment details, repair orders, recall results, and copies of every attachment. Note when Tesla responded, what it inspected, any software or hardware changes, and whether the behavior returned. If the vehicle is repaired, continue to follow the driver-supervision requirements; a repair does not turn FSD (Supervised) into an autonomous system.
If the event recurs, create a new dated entry and reference the earlier case rather than relying on memory. A clear chronology—first alert, service contact, inspection, repair, and any recurrence—gives both Tesla and a regulator a more reliable basis for deciding what should happen next.
