Say “There’s a speed check here” to Siri while Apple Maps is navigating. You can also report one through the iPhone’s Report an Incident control or CarPlay’s Report button. The options depend on active turn-by-turn directions, your region, iOS version, and— for CarPlay—your vehicle’s compatibility.
The quickest way to report a speed check in Apple Maps is to activate Siri and say, “There’s a speed check here.” You can also report it from the on-screen Report an Incident control on an iPhone or through the Report button in CarPlay. These controls appear while Apple Maps is providing turn-by-turn driving directions, and availability varies by country or region.

Only report an incident when doing so is safe and lawful. If you are driving, use your vehicle’s voice-command control or an existing hands-free Siri control rather than reaching for your iPhone.

“There’s a speed check here.”
Siri sends the speed-check report to Apple Maps without requiring you to find a button on the screen. Apple’s current Siri guidance specifically lists that wording as an example of a supported traffic-incident report.
How to activate Siri while driving
- Press and hold your vehicle’s steering-wheel voice-command button, if your vehicle supports it.
- In CarPlay, touch and hold the CarPlay Dashboard or Home button.
- Say “Hey Siri” if that feature is enabled and supported by your vehicle and iPhone.
The exact control depends on the vehicle and CarPlay setup. Do not pick up the iPhone to activate Siri while the vehicle is moving.
Report a speed check from the iPhone Maps screen
If you prefer to use the visual controls, start turn-by-turn driving directions in Apple Maps and follow these steps:
- Tap the Report an Incident button beside the map.
- Tap Speed Check.
On iOS 18 or earlier, Apple’s instructions say you may first need to tap the gray arrow at the bottom of the navigation screen and then tap Report an Incident. Button placement and labels can change in later iOS releases, so look for the reporting control within the active navigation view rather than relying on a fixed location.
Incident choices may differ by location

- Crash
- Speed Check
- Traffic
- Roadwork
- Hazard
- Road Closure
The list is not universal. Apple gives mainland China as an example of a location where Roadwork is offered instead of Speed Check. Use Speed Check when that is the incident category displayed in your version of Maps; do not assume that every country provides the same categories.
Report a speed check in CarPlay
When Apple Maps is showing turn-by-turn directions on the CarPlay display:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Select Report on the CarPlay screen.
- Choose Speed Check, if that incident type is available.
CarPlay can also be used with Siri. Press and hold the vehicle’s voice-command button, touch and hold the CarPlay Dashboard or Home button, or use “Hey Siri” where supported. Voice reporting is usually the better choice when selecting a screen control would distract you from driving.
Wired and wireless CarPlay requirements
CarPlay connection options depend on the vehicle. Apple supports connection through a vehicle USB port on compatible systems and wireless CarPlay on vehicles that provide it. Siri must be enabled for Siri-based reporting. If CarPlay is unreliable, check both the iPhone’s iOS version and the vehicle’s current software.
If you use wired CarPlay, a USB cable for wired CarPlay can be a practical troubleshooting step, but the correct connector depends on the iPhone and vehicle: check whether the car provides USB-A or USB-C and whether the iPhone uses Lightning or USB-C. A cable cannot add CarPlay support to a vehicle that does not have compatible hardware.

What other drivers see after you report it
Apple evaluates incoming incident reports rather than guaranteeing that every report is accepted or displayed immediately. Speed checks work differently from many other incident types: Apple says they are not displayed as persistent incident markers. Instead, speed-check notifications can appear while another driver is following turn-by-turn directions.
That means a submitted report may not become visible at once, may not appear for every driver, and may be filtered based on Apple’s evaluation and confidence thresholds. Do not treat the absence of a notification as proof that no speed check is present.
Can you remove or clear a speed-check report?
Apple documents Cleared and Still Here controls for certain supported hazard and accident reports. Those controls do not apply to speed checks. Apple says users cannot clear speed-check reports through that workflow.
Why “Speed Check” may be missing in Apple Maps
1. Turn-by-turn navigation is not active
The incident-reporting control is documented within the navigation experience. Start driving directions and check the map screen again. The general Reports area is not always the same as the quick-report control used while driving.
2. Your iOS version or interface is different
Apple’s iPhone support documentation states that incident reporting is available with iOS 14.5 and later. The exact interface can vary by release; Apple’s newer documentation uses current iOS labels while retaining a separate note about the iOS 18-or-earlier layout. Install available iOS updates if your device supports them, then restart Maps and begin navigation again.

3. The feature is not available in your region
Maps incident reporting is listed separately by country and region, and Apple cautions that Maps features vary geographically. The United States is included in Apple’s availability information, but the presence of Maps in a country does not by itself guarantee that every incident category is offered there.
4. CarPlay is not connected or supported
For CarPlay reporting, confirm that:
- Your vehicle supports CarPlay.
- The iPhone is connected using the wired or wireless method supported by the vehicle.
- Apple Maps is actively navigating on the CarPlay display.
- Siri is enabled if you are using voice reporting.
- The iPhone and vehicle software are up to date.
If your car has no built-in CarPlay but you still want to use Siri hands-free, an iPhone car mount can keep the phone visible and secured while you use “Hey Siri,” where supported. A mount does not activate Maps reporting, add CarPlay, or make handheld phone use legal; follow local driving laws and use voice controls only when safe.
5. Siri is not responding
Check that Siri is turned on, then use the vehicle’s voice-command button or the CarPlay Siri control instead of trying to operate the iPhone manually. Also confirm that the vehicle microphone and steering-wheel voice button work with other voice commands. Siri availability and activation methods can differ between vehicles.
“Speed check” versus “speed camera” in Apple Maps
Use speed check when describing the reportable Apple Maps incident category. Do not automatically substitute speed camera. Apple lists Report an Incident and Speed Cameras as separate Maps capabilities, and their availability can differ by region. A report about a police speed check is not necessarily the same feature as an Apple Maps speed-camera notification.

| Method | Best for | What to do | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siri | The least distracting option while driving | Say, “There’s a speed check here.” | Requires Siri and a supported activation method |
| iPhone Maps | Drivers who prefer visual controls or cannot use Siri | Active navigation → Report an Incident → Speed Check | Do not handle the phone while driving; the control may vary by iOS version |
| CarPlay | Drivers whose navigation is on the vehicle display | Report → Speed Check | Requires compatible vehicle hardware and an active CarPlay connection |
Bottom line
For a hands-free report, activate Siri and say “There’s a speed check here.” With active navigation, you can instead use Report an Incident → Speed Check on the iPhone or Report → Speed Check in CarPlay. The feature is region-dependent, reports are evaluated rather than guaranteed to appear, and Apple presents speed-check notifications during turn-by-turn directions instead of as permanent incident pins.
