Photograph the interior, report the smell to the counter or rental company, and request written instructions or another vehicle. If the odor appeared after you accepted the car, remove the contamination source, vacuum thoroughly, clean surfaces with material-safe products, and use only a light, fabric-safe neutralizer for residual odor. Heavy smoke residue, urine in padding, or an odor that returns after drying should be handled by the rental company or a professional detailer—not improvised with an ozone machine.
Cleaning a rental car also has a financial risk: odor and excessive-cleaning charges differ by company and location. Your rental agreement controls, so check it before you alter mats, apply chemicals, or return the vehicle.

First, establish who is responsible for the smell
Do not start cleaning until you have created a record of the vehicle’s condition. Odor disputes are much harder to resolve after a rental has been driven for hours or treated with a product.
At pickup
- Photograph each seat, the carpets and mats, dashboard, door panels, cargo area, and any ash, hair, stains, or wet spots. Include wide shots that identify the vehicle as well as close-ups of the contamination.
- Tell the counter agent or rental company immediately that the vehicle is not satisfactory. Ask the agent to note the odor on the rental agreement or inspection record.
- Request a replacement vehicle or written instructions if the smell is present before you leave. Budget advises customers to speak with an agent before departing when a vehicle is unsatisfactory.
- Keep copies of messages, photographs, inspection forms, and the time of your report.
Reporting before departure matters because a company may otherwise associate the odor with your rental. Avis states that a returned vehicle with tobacco odor can receive special cleaning even when visible evidence of smoking is absent.

If you notice it after driving away
Call the rental location or the company’s roadside or customer-service number as soon as you safely can. Describe the odor, when you first noticed it, and what you have done. Do not conceal the problem with strong fragrance before the company has advised you; masking can make an inspection more difficult.
Why smoke and pet odors linger
Smoke is not merely a smell in the cabin air. Tobacco smoke leaves residue on fabrics, fibers, and hard surfaces, which can continue emitting odor after the cigarette ends and ash have been removed. Avis executive vice president of operations Larry De Shon described this mechanism in 2009: “Tobacco smoke leaves a residue on fabrics, fibers and surfaces of vehicles, which emits odors that many people find unpleasant.” A spray applied to the air therefore cannot reliably remove heavy contamination embedded in upholstery or carpet.
Pet odor has a different source profile. Hair, dander, bedding, food, feces, and urine can remain in seams and cargo-area carpeting. If urine reaches seat foam or another absorbent layer, surface cleaning may make the cabin smell better temporarily while the padding continues to release odor as it warms or becomes humid.

Never assume a household cleaner is safe for a rental’s leather coating, touch-screen finish, headliner adhesive, or soft-touch trim. Avoid abrasive pads, bleach, ammonia, solvent-heavy products, and anything that leaves an oily film.
Removing cigarette or tobacco odor
1. Remove ash and disposable debris
With the car parked safely and ventilated, collect cigarette ends, ash, wrappers, drink containers, and other trash. Check cupholders, door pockets, the center console, seat rails, under-seat areas, and the spare-tire or cargo compartment. Bag the waste rather than brushing it into carpet, where it can become a second odor source.
2. Vacuum slowly and systematically
Vacuum the upholstery, carpets, removable mats, seat rails, and crevices. Move the nozzle in several directions over fabric so that ash and particles are lifted from the pile. Run the crevice tool along seat backs, belt anchors, console edges, and the folds where the seat cushion meets the backrest. Vacuum the cargo area even when the smoke was noticed only in the front seats; odors and residue travel through the cabin.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not remove trim panels, seats, or fixed carpeting from a rental vehicle. If a removable mat needs washing or replacement, obtain the rental company’s permission first and keep the original item.

3. Wipe non-porous surfaces
Use a compatible cleaner on the dashboard, door panels, console, coated trim, glass, and reachable portions of the vents. Apply the cleaner to a cloth rather than flooding the surface. Keep liquid away from switches, screens, electrical connectors, speaker openings, and air-bag seams. Wipe until the residue is removed, then use a clean, barely damp cloth if the product instructions call for it.
Clean the inside of the glass carefully. A smoke film can create glare and may be mistaken for a persistent odor problem because it leaves the cabin feeling dirty even after ventilation.
4. Ventilate
When the vehicle is parked in a secure location, open the doors or windows to exchange cabin air. Do not leave the car unattended with doors open, and do not ventilate where weather, theft, or building rules make it unsafe. Ventilation helps after source removal; it is not a substitute for cleaning residue from surfaces.
5. Treat only light residual odor
If the cabin is clean but has a mild remaining smell, apply a fabric-safe odor neutralizer sparingly and exactly as directed. Thrifty names Freshwave as an example in its own smoke-remediation process, but that reference is not a guarantee that the product is approved for your rental or effective for severe contamination. Test any product on an inconspicuous fabric area and prevent overspray on electronics, glass, leather, and controls.

Removing dog or cat odor
1. Remove the source
Take out pet bedding, toys, food, waste, litter, and any visibly soiled removable item. Inspect the cargo-area seams, seat cracks, floor edges, and under-seat spaces for hair and dried material. If a removable item belongs to the rental company, do not discard it; bag it and ask how the company wants it handled.
2. Vacuum in multiple directions
Vacuum slowly across seats, carpets, mats, and the cargo area, then repeat across the same areas from a different direction. Use the crevice tool in seat joints and around plastic trim. Hair often winds around stitching and carpet fibers, so make several passes rather than relying on one quick sweep.
3. Treat a localized fabric spot
For carpet or cloth, spot-test a fabric-safe enzymatic or detergent cleaner in an inconspicuous location. Apply only enough liquid to reach the contamination. Follow the label’s blotting or extraction directions and use towels to remove moisture. Do not saturate seat foam, headliners, electronics, or leather. Excess water can create a new odor, stain, mold risk, or damage claim.

If urine has reached padding, if a wet spot is extensive, or if the smell returns after the area has completely dried, stop treating it yourself. Tell the rental company what happened and ask it to arrange professional cleaning. A returning odor usually indicates contamination below the surface, where repeated spraying can worsen the problem without reaching the source.

Should you use an ozone or oxidation machine?
Do not run an ozone or other oxidation device with people or animals inside the vehicle. More importantly, do not assume a renter is authorized to use one. Such treatment can affect materials, create a safety issue if the car is occupied before adequate airing-out, and complicate responsibility for any damage.
Ask the rental company to arrange de-smoking instead. Thrifty says its fleet process uses a “specially developed electronic oxidation device” and may take the vehicle out of service for up to 24 hours. Hertz likewise says de-smoking can require up to 24 hours out of service. Those statements describe company procedures, not a promise that a consumer device will work in a rental car. A rental company can also inspect HVAC components, replace filters where appropriate, and document the treatment in its own records.
When professional cleaning is the better choice
Contact the rental company before attempting more treatment when any of these conditions applies:
- The smoke smell remains strong after debris removal, vacuuming, surface cleaning, and ventilation.
- Odor is strongest from the headliner, seat foam, carpet padding, or air vents.
- Pet urine has soaked into a seat, floor padding, or cargo-area lining.
- You cannot identify the source of a recurring odor.
- The agreement requires company authorization for chemical treatment, mat removal, or other cleaning.
- Your return deadline does not leave enough time for the vehicle to dry completely.
Provide the company with your photographs, the location of the odor, and a list of products or methods already used. This gives its detailer a better chance of finding contamination and protects you from an allegation that an unreported treatment caused the damage.
What odor charges can look like
The following are published examples from named rental companies and policies accessed in 2026. They are not a universal industry tariff; the agreement, location, vehicle class, and evidence of damage control the actual charge.
| Company | Published example | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Avis | Up to $250 | Amount shown in its rental-policy FAQ; a tobacco odor may trigger special cleaning even without visible smoking evidence. |
| Thrifty | $400 | Amount shown in its published rental policy for smoking-related cleaning. |
| Budget | Up to $750 | Amount shown in its rental-policy FAQ; Budget also advises reporting an unsatisfactory vehicle before leaving. |
| Hertz | $100 | Amount shown in its no-smoking policy FAQ; its policy says de-smoking may require up to 24 hours out of service. |
| Thrifty | $50–$250 | Published range for excessive pet hair, soiling, or animal damage. |
These figures may not apply at every airport, franchise, country, or vehicle class. Read the no-smoking, cleaning, and pet provisions in the contract for your booking, including any language about administrative fees, taxes, or proof of damage.
Choose the least risky option for your situation
| Situation | Best first action | Main risk to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Odor present at pickup | Photograph it, report it, and request a written note or replacement. | Being treated as the source because the condition was not documented. |
| Loose ash, trash, hair, or bedding | Remove the material and vacuum seams, carpets, mats, and upholstery. | Leaving the source in the cabin while attempting to mask it. |
| Light smell after cleaning | Use a small amount of a material-safe neutralizer and ventilate safely. | Overspray, an oily film, or fragrance that conceals rather than removes odor. |
| Smoke residue on multiple surfaces | Ask the rental company for professional de-smoking. | Assuming household spray can remove contamination in fibers, padding, or HVAC areas. |
| Urine in padding or recurring pet odor | Stop DIY treatment and request professional extraction or replacement. | Saturating foam and creating a moisture or damage claim. |
| Considering ozone or oxidation | Obtain company authorization and let the fleet provider arrange it. | Operating a device around occupants or animals, or using an unauthorized method. |
Before returning the rental car
- Recheck the seats, carpets, mats, cargo area, door pockets, and cupholders for remaining debris.
- Confirm that treated fabric and carpet are completely dry. Do not return a vehicle with damp upholstery or a wet headliner.
- Remove your own bags, towels, cleaners, and waste.
- Photograph the cleaned interior in the same areas documented at pickup.
- Tell the return agent about any odor that remains and show the earlier report and photographs.
- Keep the final inspection record and receipt until the deposit or card authorization is released.
Common mistakes that make an odor problem worse
- Using fragrance as the first step: perfume does not remove ash, residue, hair, or urine and can make the source harder to identify.
- Flooding upholstery: liquid can migrate into foam, wiring, sensors, and carpet backing.
- Scrubbing leather or coated trim aggressively: abrasion can leave a visible change that becomes a separate damage claim.
- Spraying into vents: liquid can reach electrical components; clean only reachable vent surfaces with a compatible product.
- Removing or replacing rental parts without permission: keep mats and other items with the vehicle unless the company instructs otherwise.
- Waiting until the return counter: late notice weakens your ability to show that the odor was pre-existing or that you followed the company’s instructions.
- Using an ozone device in an occupied car: clear everyone and every animal from the vehicle and obtain authorization before any such treatment.
The practical answer
For a rental car, the safest odor-removal sequence is responsibility first, source removal second, targeted cleaning third, and escalation when contamination has reached padding or remains after drying. A clean, dry, documented vehicle is more valuable than a heavily perfumed one. If the smell was present at pickup, the rental company should own the remediation decision; if it arose during your rental, prompt disclosure and a restrained, material-safe cleanup give you the best chance of avoiding a larger cleaning charge.
