- Turn the ignition off, keep the key or key fob away from the vehicle and make sure no one operates the switches while the wiring is disconnected.
- Open the door fully and clear the surrounding area. Leave room for two people to step away while carrying it.
- Place a padded blanket, stand or other stable protected surface nearby. Do not rest a painted door on bare concrete, gravel or a sharp edge.
- Have a second person available before loosening anything. The handbook specifically directs you to lift the open door with another person.
- Prepare a small labeled container for screws, nuts and any removable covers. The handbook says the hinge-pin screws and nuts can be stowed in the rear cargo tray under the rear load floor.
- If your manual specifies the handbook procedure, have a T50 Torx head driver for the hinge-pin screws and a T40 Torx head driver for the center door-check screw. These tools are not required on a tool-free system.
Handbook procedure: remove a door with Torx fasteners and a wiring connector
Use this sequence only when it matches your Wrangler’s owner handbook. Work on one door at a time so the remaining doors provide a visual reference and so parts cannot be mixed.
1. Lower the window
Roll the glass completely down before loosening the door. The handbook includes this step to prevent the window or its surrounding parts from being damaged while the door is handled. Keep the glass down until the door has been safely placed on its padded surface.
2. Remove the hinge-pin screws
With the door open, remove the hinge-pin screws from both the upper and lower outside hinges using a T50 Torx head driver. Keep the driver squarely engaged with each fastener so the recess is not damaged. Retain the screws and nuts together; the handbook identifies the rear cargo tray under the rear load floor as a storage location.
Do not start lifting the door after removing only one hinge fastener. Both hinge locations must be free, and the door still remains connected through the door-check and electrical harness.

3. Move the front seat forward
Slide the applicable front seat or seats fully forward. This exposes the lower B-pillar area and gives you working room to reach the wiring access door without leaning against the door or pulling on the harness.
4. Open the B-pillar wiring access door
At the bottom of the B-pillar, carefully pry open and remove the plastic wiring access door identified in the handbook. Use controlled pressure at the cover’s edge. Keep the cover with the fasteners and do not tug on the wiring visible behind it.
5. Unlock and unplug the wiring connector
Disconnect the door wiring before attempting to lift. The handbook describes squeezing the tab at the base of the wiring harness to unlock the connector tab, then unplugging the connector. Pull on the connector body rather than the wires. Once separated, position both halves where they cannot catch on the hinge or door-check arm.

A connector that will not release is a stop sign, not a reason to use a screwdriver as a lever. Recheck the locking tab’s position in the manual and make sure you are pressing the release at the harness base.

6. Remove the center door-check screw
Remove the center door-check screw with a T40 Torx head driver. The door-check arm limits how far the door opens; leaving this screw installed can prevent the door from clearing the body. Keep the screw with the other door hardware and support the door as soon as the check is free.
7. Lift the door off with two people
Open the door as directed, then have one person take the main weight while the other controls the outer edge. Lift vertically to clear the hinge pins and move straight to the padded support. Keep the wiring connector and door-check arm clear of the body and do not twist the door sideways against the hinges.
Set the door down on its protected surface with the painted outer panel and mirror protected from contact. Do not carry it by the window frame, wiring, mirror or door-check arm.

Reinstall the door in the reverse order
Reinstallation is the removal sequence reversed, but alignment and connector routing deserve deliberate checks. A door that is forced onto a misaligned hinge can damage the hinge, paint or wiring.

- With two people, position the open door so the hinge barrels line up with the vehicle’s hinge pins. The handbook notes that the upper hinge has a longer pin that can help guide the door into place.
- Lower the door gently onto the hinges. If it does not settle naturally, lift it back off and correct the alignment rather than forcing it.
- Reinstall and secure the center door-check screw with the T40 driver when the handbook procedure applies.
- Route the wiring as it was originally positioned and reconnect the harness. Push the connector together until its lock engages; never leave it partly seated.
- Replace the plastic wiring access door at the bottom of the B-pillar.
