Disconnect the camera wiring before removing a camera-equipped Silverado tailgate—but use the instructions for your truck’s exact model year and configuration. Chevrolet’s manuals show different wiring details across years: the 2013 manual places the camera connectors behind the license plate, while the 2011 manual describes additional connector-protection and harness-routing steps. The mechanical removal sequence below is from the 2016 manual, not a universal procedure.
Start with the owner manual for your Silverado’s year
Silverado tailgate and camera-wiring arrangements vary by model year and configuration. Chevrolet’s Manuals and Guides page lets you select your vehicle year and find the applicable owner manual. Follow that manual if its instructions differ from the selected-year examples here; do not assume a connector location or removal step applies to every Silverado.
Disconnect the camera wiring before removing the tailgate
Chevrolet’s 2013 Silverado Owner’s Manual states: “The rear vision camera must be disconnected if the tailgate needs to be removed.” For the 2013 model, remove the license plate to access the camera connectors behind it, then press the release tab on each connector to disconnect it from the chassis harness. This location and release method are specific to the cited 2013 instructions.
Connector protection on the 2011 model
The 2011 manual describes additional steps for protecting the exposed wiring: join the exposed chassis connectors, route the harness through the pickup box, and join the camera connectors before removing the tailgate. For installation, reverse the steps and secure the grommet and connection as directed by that manual. Do not transfer these details to a different model year unless its manual specifies them.

Remove the tailgate: the 2016 manual’s sequence
The following mechanical sequence is from Chevrolet’s 2016 Silverado Owner’s Manual. Its cable and pivot instructions may not match other years or configurations.
- Support the tailgate firmly. Have another person help if needed; Chevrolet warns that assistance may be needed to avoid vehicle damage.
- Release both support cables. Remove the retaining clips and detach each support cable from its bolt.
- Free the right edge. Lift the right edge of the tailgate from its lower pivot.
- Free the left edge. Move the tailgate to the right to release its left edge from the lower pivot, then lift it away carefully.
If the truck has tailgate assist, the 2016 manual includes an additional positioning step. Follow the manual’s directions for that configuration rather than forcing the tailgate through the standard sequence. Chevrolet also cautions against allowing people to ride on the tailgate.

Before reinstalling or replacing wiring
Use the exact-year manual to reconnect and route the camera wiring, including any instructions for the grommet and connector protection. If wiring is damaged, Chevrolet lists GM Genuine Parts tailgate wiring harness 85552962 for Silverado 1500 model years 2022–2026; that listing does not establish that it is the correct camera-only harness for every configuration or that it is needed for routine removal. Verify fitment by year, trim, and VIN before ordering.
