Start with tire pressure, then soften the electronic dampers—not the chassis. Check pressures cold against the driver-door label, select Comfort or Normal suspension for broken pavement, and use Custom mode to keep the engine, steering and differential settings you prefer. Only after those steps should you consider an 18-inch wheel-and-tire package with a taller sidewall. That sequence improves impact harshness while preserving the Elantra N’s adaptive dampers, electronic limited-slip differential and factory alignment geometry.
The Elantra N will never ride like a soft family sedan. Its firm bushings, performance chassis and low-profile tires are deliberate. The goal is to remove unnecessary sharpness from potholes and expansion joints without introducing tire flex, clearance problems or alignment changes that reduce its cornering ability.

Why the Elantra N feels harsh
Several parts work together to create the ride you feel. The car uses electronically controlled dampers, stiff suspension bushings, substantial chassis bracing and short-sidewall performance tires. Those parts keep the body controlled during braking and cornering, but they also transmit abrupt impacts when the road surface is broken.
Ride quality also varies with tire pressure, wheel weight, tire construction, temperature and model year. A pressure that is only a little too high can make a sharp-edged bump feel much worse. Conversely, lowering pressure below the placard value can make the car feel softer briefly while reducing steering precision, increasing heat and exposing the tire to impact damage.

Independent testing confirms the trade-off. MotorTrend recorded 0.96 g of lateral acceleration in its 2024 manual-transmission test and credited the adaptive suspension and chassis bracing for the car’s grip. The same test team wrote that, even in Comfort mode, the ride remained on the stiff side. Road & Track reported that Comfort added some compliance over rough roads but stopped well short of delivering genuine comfort.
Step 1: Correct the tire pressure before changing parts
Pressure is the cheapest, most reversible ride adjustment and the one most likely to be overlooked. Hyundai warns that overinflation produces a harsh ride, accelerated wear at the center of the tread and a greater possibility of damage from road hazards. The manual also warns that either over- or under-inflation can hurt handling and cause sudden tire failure.
- Let the tires cool. Hyundai defines a cold tire as one on a car parked for at least three hours, or driven no more than 1.6 km (1 mile).
- Use a quality gauge. Check all four tires, and check the spare if your car is equipped with one.
- Match the driver-door placard. Use the pressure printed on the vehicle label for your exact model, tire size and market. Do not substitute the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall.
- Adjust in small increments only to the placard value. Do not deliberately run lower pressure to chase a softer ride, and do not add pressure because a tire looks low after a warm drive.
- Recheck after the tires cool again. Temperature changes alter the reading, so make your final check under the same cold conditions.
A digital gauge is useful because a two- or three-psi error can be noticeable in a low-profile tire. If one tire repeatedly loses pressure, find and repair the leak rather than compensating at the other tires. Uneven pressure side to side can make the car pull, change turn-in and confuse any ride-quality diagnosis.

Step 2: Choose the damper setting for the road
The Elantra N’s electronic dampers change their force with the selected drive mode. The mode does not simply make the whole car “sporty” or “soft”; it changes several systems at once. Hyundai N’s Custom mode lets you set the engine, steering-wheel weight, suspension, transmission, e-LSD, ESC and exhaust sound independently.

Comfort suspension
Use Comfort as the first choice on patched city streets, concrete joints and roads with repeated sharp edges. It reduces damping force so the wheel can move over small impacts with less force reaching the cabin. It will not remove every jolt because the springs, bushings and tire sidewalls remain performance-focused.
Normal suspension
Normal is a useful compromise when Comfort allows more body movement than you want or when a route mixes smooth highways with rough urban pavement. It retains more vertical control while avoiding the extra impact harshness of the firmest setting.
Sport and N suspension
Sport or N damping is most useful on smooth roads, during brisk cornering or when you want maximum body control. On broken pavement these settings can make the tire skip across a series of sharp bumps, reducing comfort and potentially reducing grip on very uneven surfaces. Select them for the road in front of you rather than leaving them active by habit.

Custom mode is the best way to keep the responses you enjoy while relaxing the ride. Set suspension to Comfort or Normal, then choose steering weight, engine response, transmission behavior, e-LSD and ESC independently. Hyundai N gives an example preference of medium steering weight, normal suspension and the most extreme settings for the remaining systems. Your selections can differ; the important point is that suspension no longer has to follow the most aggressive engine or steering setting.

When evaluating a change, drive the same rough section in the same direction at a similar speed. Change one setting at a time and allow the dampers to settle after switching modes. A softer setting that feels better over a pothole but lets the car float through a long sweeper may not be the right setting for your route.
What changed for 2024 and newer cars
The 2024 refresh received urethane rear bushings, revised front bushings, greater chassis stiffness and retuned adaptive dampers. The Drive reported better comfort over choppy pavement compared with the earlier car. That does not make the ride soft: MotorTrend still described the 2024 Elantra N as stiff in Comfort mode, and Road & Track found that Comfort provided only limited compliance.
Because of those revisions, a 2024-or-newer car may need only pressure correction and mode selection for a satisfactory daily setup. Earlier cars can show a larger perceived benefit from a wheel-and-tire change, but that is not a guarantee. Tire brand, construction, wheel mass and road surface can outweigh the model-year difference.
Do not assume that a setting or wheel size from one market applies to another. Verify the model year, body style, brake package and factory tire size before ordering parts. Any change in wheel width, offset or tire diameter should be checked for brake clearance, suspension clearance, fender clearance and speedometer effect.

When an 18-inch wheel and taller sidewall makes sense
A smaller-diameter wheel can accommodate a taller tire sidewall. More sidewall generally gives the tire more room to deflect before a pothole load reaches the wheel and suspension, and it can add protection against rim damage. That is a reasoned mechanical trade-off, not a guaranteed percentage improvement. The reviewed testing does not establish a controlled before-and-after improvement for the Elantra N from moving to 18-inch wheels.
The complete package matters more than the wheel diameter printed in an advertisement. Before buying, verify:
- Load rating: The tire must support the Elantra N’s axle loads with an appropriate safety margin.
- Speed rating: Retain a rating suitable for the car’s performance and your legal operating conditions.
- Overall diameter: Keep the replacement tire close to the factory rolling diameter so the ABS, ESC, transmission and speedometer continue to receive the expected wheel-speed signal.
- Width and section shape: A wider or unusually square tire can contact the strut, inner fender or outer arch even when the nominal diameter appears correct.
- Offset and brake clearance: The wheel must clear the Elantra N’s brakes and position the tire without rubbing through the full steering and suspension travel.
- Wheel mass: A heavy 18-inch wheel can erase some of the ride benefit by increasing unsprung and rotational mass.
- Alignment: Check toe and camber after installation. A change that introduces uneven wear or steering pull is not a successful comfort upgrade.
Never lower tire pressure below the Hyundai placard to make a new wheel package ride better. Select a correctly rated tire and wheel first, then set cold pressure to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification unless a qualified tire-and-wheel engineer provides a documented alternative for that exact fitment.
How to preserve handling after a ride change
The safest comfort improvements leave the factory adaptive dampers and electronic limited-slip differential in place. Those systems are part of why the car can generate strong lateral grip while remaining usable on the street.

- Keep pressures equal across an axle and correct side-to-side differences before judging handling.
- Use the same tire type and comparable tread condition on each axle; mixing constructions can change breakaway behavior.
- Retain the factory spring and damper relationship unless you have a specific engineering reason to change it.
- After fitting different wheels or tires, inspect for rubbing at full steering lock and through compression, not only while the car is parked.
- Have alignment checked if the steering wheel is off-center, the car pulls, the steering response changes or the tread begins wearing unevenly.
- Recalibrate your expectations: a taller sidewall may improve impact absorption but can add a small amount of steering flex compared with the original low-profile tire.
Test the car in both directions on the same corner and over the same bump. A softer impact can be mistaken for reduced grip if the tire is underinflated or if the new wheel is substantially heavier. The objective is controlled wheel movement, not the softest possible first impression.
Choosing the right intervention
| Intervention | Expected ride effect | Handling risk | Reversibility and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set cold pressure to the door placard | Removes harshness caused by overinflation; restores the intended tire footprint | Lowest risk when the placard value is followed | Immediate and free; recheck when cold |
| Comfort suspension mode | Less sharpness over repeated small impacts | More body movement on smooth, fast corners | Instantly reversible; select by road condition |
| Normal suspension mode | Moderate compliance with more control than Comfort | Usually a balanced street setting | Instantly reversible |
| Custom mode with Comfort or Normal suspension | Separates ride comfort from aggressive engine, steering or transmission settings | Depends on the other systems you select | Instantly reversible; save a second profile for smooth roads |
| Verified 18-inch wheel and taller-sidewall package | Potentially better pothole impact absorption and rim protection | Depends on tire construction, mass, fitment and alignment | Costly and reversible only by refitting the original package; verify every specification first |
Troubleshooting by symptom
The car feels harsh everywhere
Check all four cold pressures against the placard, then drive in Comfort. If the ride remains harsh, inspect the tires for excessive wear, impact damage, bulges or an incorrect size. A tire with a stiff construction can feel firm even at the correct pressure.
Only one corner crashes over bumps
Look for a pressure difference, a damaged tire or wheel, and signs of a bent rim. A single-corner problem is not solved by changing the global drive mode. Have the suspension and alignment inspected if the symptom persists.

Confirm that pressures were not reduced below specification and that the replacement tire has the required load and speed ratings. Check wheel weight, sidewall condition and alignment. Restore the original wheel-and-tire set if you cannot identify the cause.
The new wheels rub
Stop driving aggressively until clearance is verified. Inspect at full steering lock and during suspension compression. Incorrect offset, excessive width or a tire whose actual section width is larger than its nominal size can cause contact. A professional fitment check is safer than relying on static clearance in a parking space.
A practical setup for daily roads
- Check cold pressure with the car parked for at least three hours and set every tire to the driver-door value.
- Select Custom mode and set suspension to Comfort for heavily broken pavement or Normal for mixed roads.
- Keep your preferred engine, steering, transmission, e-LSD and ESC settings rather than softening the entire car.
- Drive a familiar route and note impact sharpness, body control, steering accuracy and tire noise separately.
- If the car is still too harsh, inspect the tires and wheels before buying parts.
- Only then investigate a complete 18-inch package, confirming diameter, width, offset, load rating, speed rating, brake clearance and alignment requirements.
- Retest the same route after installation and keep the original wheels available so you can make a direct comparison.
What cannot be promised
No controlled test establishes a specific percentage reduction in ride harshness from a pressure correction, a wheel-size change or a damper setting on the Elantra N. Road surfaces, tire models, temperatures and measurement methods vary too much for a universal number. The reliable conclusions are narrower: overinflation makes the ride harsher; Comfort and Normal reduce damping force relative to the firm modes; and a properly engineered taller-sidewall package can provide more impact compliance while introducing fitment and steering-response trade-offs.
For most owners, the best handling-preserving solution is therefore simple: correct the pressure, use the adaptive suspension intelligently and leave the factory hardware alone until those adjustments have been evaluated. The Elantra N’s performance character remains intact, while avoidable sharpness is removed from everyday driving.
