If you are prone to motion sickness, ask a pharmacist or clinician about a suitable medicine and take it before boarding, following the local label. Avoid alcohol, heavy meals and strong odors, and tell the crew if the ride becomes unusually rough.
Electric propulsion has not been shown in the available passenger evidence to make a ferry inherently more or less likely to cause seasickness. Your experience is driven mainly by the vessel’s motion, sea state, speed, seating position and visual cues.

Why a fast ferry makes some passengers sick
Seasickness is a sensory-conflict problem. Your inner ear detects acceleration, rolling and pitching while your eyes may see a cabin that appears relatively steady. The mismatch can produce nausea, vomiting, dizziness and vertigo. As the NOAA National Ocean Service puts it: “Seasickness results from a conflict in the inner ear and the erratic motion of a vessel.”
People vary widely in susceptibility. A history of motion sickness in cars, aircraft or amusement rides can be a warning sign, and the CDC Yellow Book (2026 edition) also identifies factors such as migraine history, vestibular disorders, age, inadequate sleep and personal sensitivity. Diesel, fuel, fish and other strong odors can amplify nausea even when they are not the original cause.

Why speed and sea conditions matter
A high-speed craft encounters waves more rapidly and can produce sharper shocks and vertical accelerations. UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) guidance says high speed typically worsens wave impacts and that vertical motion is generally greater near the bow. The same guidance is about whole-body vibration and shock on small vessels, not a guarantee that every passenger ferry will behave the same way. Hull form, wave direction, loading, trim and the operator’s chosen speed all matter.
Does electric propulsion change seasickness risk?
There is no established electric-versus-conventional passenger seasickness rate in the cited evidence. Electric motors may change noise, vibration or exhaust exposure, but those possible differences do not establish a lower or higher seasickness risk. Treat the ferry as a moving vessel: manage motion and visual conflict rather than assuming the drivetrain determines comfort.
Prepare before you board
Plan if you know you are susceptible
Do not wait for nausea to become severe. The CDC says motion-sickness medicine generally works best when taken before motion exposure; once symptoms begin, slowed stomach activity can make an oral dose harder to absorb. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which option fits your age, medical conditions, other medicines and voyage duration. Use the product’s local package directions, because formulations and availability differ between countries.

Sleep, alcohol and smoking
Get adequate sleep before the crossing. Sleep deprivation can worsen symptoms. Avoid alcohol before and during the trip; the CDC says alcohol and smoking can increase motion sickness. These precautions matter even if you plan to take medicine, because sedating medicines and alcohol can compound impairment.

Eat lightly and hydrate
Avoid a large, fatty or heavy meal immediately before departure. Choose a modest meal you know you tolerate, and carry water. There is no reliably proven special diet or supplement that prevents seasickness. The CDC describes evidence for diets, vitamins, supplements and ginger as weak or contradictory. NHS guidance lists ginger as something a traveler may try, but that is not evidence of dependable protection.
Pack for a practical response
- Water in a container that is easy to use without looking down.
- Any medicine recommended by a pharmacist or clinician, with the package directions available.
- A small bag or other provision for vomiting, tissues and hand sanitizer.
- Light layers so you can move to a cooler, better-ventilated area without becoming chilled.
Where to sit on a fast ferry
Seat location can reduce, but cannot eliminate, the motion you feel. NHS advice favors the middle of a boat and looking at a fixed point such as the horizon. The CDC advises avoiding locations of maximum motion, giving the bow as an example. MCA guidance likewise notes generally greater vertical motion toward the bow on fast craft.
| Location or feature | Why it may help or hurt | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Near the middle of the vessel | Usually closer to the boat’s center of motion than the extreme ends. | Choose this first when the seating plan allows it. |
| Bow or forward-most seats | Fast-craft vertical motion is generally greater toward the bow, especially in waves. | Avoid when you have a choice; do not move into a restricted area. |
| Stern or rear seats | Often less vertical motion than the bow, but propulsive effects, wake and the specific hull can change the experience. | Use the middle as the broad rule; ask crew about the calmest approved seating on that vessel. |
| Seat with a clear outside view | A stable horizon gives the eyes a reference that better matches the inner ear. | Face forward or toward the horizon without repeatedly scanning. |
| Enclosed seat with no stable view | A visually stable cabin can intensify the mismatch between sight and balance. | Close your eyes, keep your head still and use fresh air if permitted. |
These are layout principles, not guarantees. A catamaran, monohull, foil-assisted craft or other design can distribute motion differently, and the safest seat may not be the most comfortable one. Follow crew instructions, remain within designated passenger areas and use handholds when standing.

Use a stable visual reference
Look at the distant horizon or another fixed point outside. Do not continually sweep your eyes across nearby objects. If weather, darkness or the vessel design hides the horizon, close your eyes and breathe slowly rather than staring at a moving interior.

What to do during the crossing
- Settle in before departure. Sit in the approved mid-vessel area, secure loose items and position yourself so you can see outside without twisting your neck.
- Keep your head and torso steady. Unnecessary head movements increase conflicting signals. Rest your head against a support if one is available and safe.
- Look far away. Use the horizon or another stable reference. Avoid visual scanning of nearby seats, waves close to the hull or a moving phone screen.
- Stop reading and screen use. Put away books, phones, tablets and films at the first hint of symptoms. Reading forces your eyes to focus on a nearby stable object while your inner ear senses vessel motion.
- Get fresh air. If the crew permits it and the area is safe, move to a ventilated location or let cool air reach your face. Never enter a restricted deck or lean over a rail.
- Breathe in a controlled rhythm. Slow, systematic breathing requires attention and may help. The CDC reports laboratory trials in which controlled breathing was around half as effective as anti-motion-sickness drugs and had no medication side effects; it requires practice and is not a guarantee on a ferry.
- Drink small amounts. Take frequent sips of water, especially after vomiting. Seasickness and some medicines can contribute to dehydration and headaches, so replace fluid gradually rather than drinking a large volume at once.
- Tell the crew early. Crew can direct you to a safer seat, a ventilated area or onboard assistance. Hold rails and follow instructions if the vessel is pitching or making hard turns.
Medication: what may help and when to take it
Medication choice is personal. Drowsiness or sedation is the most common side effect across motion-sickness medicines, and each product has additional contraindications and interactions. A pharmacist or clinician can match the medicine to your health, age, other medicines, local availability and the expected intensity and duration of the trip.
| Option in CDC guidance | Reference information for adults on exposure of six hours or less | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Meclizine | Listed for mild-to-moderate motion stimulus; specific dose and timing depend on the local product. | Commonly sedating; follow the local label and professional advice. |
| Dimenhydrinate | Listed for mild-to-moderate stimulus. The CDC table gives 50–100 mg orally, onset about two hours and duration about eight hours. | Those figures are reference drug characteristics, not an individualized instruction or a prediction that you will remain symptom-free. It is sold over the counter in the United States, but availability and formulations vary elsewhere. |
| Promethazine | Listed for intense motion stimulus; the cited table does not establish one universal dose for every traveler. | Can cause substantial sedation and has medicine-specific contraindications. Obtain professional advice. |
| Scopolamine patch | Timing and use depend on the prescribed product and local instructions. | Do not cut the patch. The CDC notes specific cautions, including glaucoma and risk of urinary retention. |
The CDC’s timing and duration figures are not a recommendation to take a particular dose without checking the label. Do not drive, cycle or operate equipment if a medicine makes you drowsy, and do not combine sedating medicines with alcohol unless a clinician specifically says it is safe.
Children need separate advice
Do not give a child an adult regimen. The CDC recommends trying behavioral measures first, warns that antihistamines can sedate children or occasionally cause paradoxical agitation, and says scopolamine should be avoided in children. Use the child-specific local label and seek advice from a pediatric clinician or pharmacist.

What about wristbands, ginger and supplements?
Acupressure bands and similar products performed no better than placebo in trials cited by the CDC, although some people may still perceive a placebo benefit. NHS notes that such bands do not work for everyone. Ginger, vitamins and other supplements have weak or contradictory evidence; do not treat them as reliable substitutes for proven planning or professional medication advice.

If nausea starts anyway
- Stop reading and put away every screen.
- Move to fresh air or better ventilation if permitted and safe.
- Sit or lie down in a secure position, keep your head still and focus on a distant stable point, or close your eyes.
- Use slow, regular breathing rather than rapid breaths.
- Take small sips of water after vomiting. Avoid forcing food until your stomach settles.
- Tell a crew member that you are unwell. They can help you move safely and assess whether further assistance is needed.
Do not take an extra dose simply because symptoms continue unless the product label or a clinician tells you to. If vomiting is persistent, you cannot keep fluids down, you become confused or faint, or symptoms seem different from ordinary motion sickness, seek medical assistance rather than assuming the ferry is the only cause.
What the operator can and cannot change
The MCA guidance says operators should match speed to sea conditions and passenger comfort where relevant, and it discusses reducing speed as one possible response to shocks and impacts. A passenger can report severe discomfort, but cannot require a particular speed; safety, navigation and schedule decisions remain with the operator. No hull or seating arrangement is guaranteed to eliminate whole-body vibration in every sea state.
Ask crew about approved seating instead of moving through the vessel while underway. Keep aisles clear, use handholds and obey announcements. A calmer section may be available, but it is never worth entering a restricted deck or violating a safety instruction to reach it.

Historical passenger-comfort work shows why vessel type and operating conditions deserve attention, but it does not provide an electric-ferry seasickness rate. The European Commission’s COMPASS project surveyed conventional ferries, RoPax vessels, monohull and catamaran high-speed craft and explored monitoring motion and wave height so operators could adjust operating guidance. The project ended in 2005; its results are available at CORDIS and in a project summary.

A bibliographic record describes a 1995 study that recorded motion and collected passenger questionnaires on a 26-metre catamaran and a 41-metre monohull serving Rottnest Island. The record documents the design, not a current incidence estimate or a remedy that can be generalized to electric ferries: TRID study record.
Older Canadian public-health guidance also cautions that motion-sickness studies are difficult to compare and that evidence for some general preventive measures is observational or anecdotal: PHAC statement. For current medication and safety decisions, use the newer CDC guidance and local clinical advice.
