How to Reduce Motion Sickness in Extremely Fast-Accelerating Cars

Rapid launches magnify the mismatch between what your eyes, inner ear and body feel. These evidence-based seating, driving and recovery steps can reduce sickness without relying on unproven gadgets.

The fastest way to reduce sickness in a rapidly accelerating car is to make your visual, vestibular and body-motion signals agree as much as possible. Sit where you can see through the windshield, keep your head and torso supported, avoid phones and reading, use fresh air and slow breathing, and stop the run as soon as symptoms begin. A passenger who is already nauseated, dehydrated or sleep-deprived should skip the acceleration session. Medicines, ginger and acupressure may help some people, but none is guaranteed; ask a pharmacist or clinician before taking a drug.

Why hard acceleration can make you sick

Motion sickness is a sensory-mismatch problem. Your brain continuously compares information from the inner ears (the vestibular system), eyes, muscles and joints. When those signals disagree with the motion your brain expects, nausea, dizziness, sweating, pallor and vomiting can follow. The CDC Yellow Book describes this as “the most widely accepted explanation for motion sickness … the sensory conflict or neural mismatch theory.”

A launch in a performance car adds a powerful linear-acceleration signal. Braking supplies the opposite longitudinal force; cornering adds lateral force; gear changes and throttle modulation can make the force change abruptly. If your eyes are focused on a stationary phone or the side of the cabin while your body is pushed forward or sideways, the conflict is larger. Even when you look ahead, an acceleration that is stronger or less predictable than your inner-ear model can still trigger symptoms.

What the experiments actually show

A 1982 highway experiment exposed 18 volunteers to repetitive braking maneuvers producing 0.1–1.2 g of acceleration. On that study’s nausea scale, a normal moving view produced moderate nausea (less than 1), closing the eyes produced medium nausea (about 2), and viewing a stationary reading field while the body accelerated produced strong nausea (greater than 5). Those are results from one experiment, not universal thresholds or a prediction of how any individual will react.

In a 2004 car visual-field study, both wide and narrow forward views reduced sickness, whereas a real-time video of the road ahead did not. The study also found circumstantial evidence that horizontal acceleration below 0.1 Hz (very slow side-to-side changes) contributed to sickness. A live camera image can therefore be less useful than a direct view through the windshield, even when both appear to show the road.

Choose the least provocative seat

Seat position changes how much of the road you can see, how well you can brace your body and how early you can anticipate a force. The front passenger seat is usually the best choice when it is legal and safe, but the car’s restraint system, airbags, seat design and local rules always take priority. Never ride in a position that disables an airbag or requires an unsafe posture.

Position Forward visibility Head and torso stability How predictable motion feels Practical choice
Front passenger Usually the clearest view through the windshield Head restraint and three-point belt are easy to use Often best; you can see braking and turns begin First choice when permitted and safe
Centered rear position Can provide a better forward sightline than an outboard rear seat Depends on the vehicle’s center head restraint and belt Better than a blocked side view, but vehicle-specific Useful fallback if equipped correctly
Outboard rear seat More side-window and less forward reference Can be stable, although lateral movement may feel stronger Often harder to anticipate cornering Use only with a clear forward view and proper restraint
Third row or rear-facing position Frequently limited or reversed May increase head movement and visual conflict Usually least predictable during launches and bends Avoid for an acceleration session when another safe seat is available

Set up the seat before moving

  • Adjust the head restraint so the back of your head can remain close to it without forcing your neck forward.
  • Set the seatback at a comfortable, modest recline rather than an upright posture that lets your head bob.
  • Fasten the lap belt low across the pelvis and the shoulder belt across the chest; remove slack without routing the belt behind your back.
  • Keep both feet supported on the floor or the vehicle’s intended footrest. Do not brace against an airbag panel or dashboard.
  • Ask the driver to keep the passenger’s seat position unchanged during the run so your visual reference and bracing do not suddenly move.

Prepare your body before an acceleration run

Eat and drink lightly

Avoid a heavy or spicy meal shortly before travel, and avoid alcohol. Do not start while dehydrated. A small, familiar meal and normal water intake are less likely to provoke symptoms than either a full stomach or fasting until you feel weak. Bring water so you can take small sips during a break.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your baseline

Postpone the run if you are already nauseated, dizzy, unusually tired, hung over or sleep-deprived. Motion sickness builds faster when the body is under other stresses. Tell the driver in advance what “slow down” or “stop” means, and agree that the request will be honored immediately.

What to do during hard acceleration and cornering

  1. Look through the windshield. Focus on the road ahead or a distant, stable point near the horizon. Do not stare at a nearby dashboard, your lap or a side-window object.
  2. Put every close visual task away. No phone, reading, filming, gaming or watching a screen. A passenger should not review launch data while the car is moving.
  3. Support the head and torso. Keep the back of your head near the head restraint and your shoulders against the seat. Minimize repeated head turns.
  4. Align with the turn. When it is safe and the restraint allows it, lean your head and torso into a bend instead of holding your body rigidly upright while the car pushes you sideways. The CDC describes this as aligning the body with the gravito-inertial force vector.
  5. Breathe slowly. Use quiet, regular breaths rather than rapid shallow breathing or breath-holding. Breathing will not cancel acceleration, but it can prevent anxiety and over-breathing from amplifying discomfort.
  6. Request a smooth progression. A gradual build-up gives your brain more time to predict the force than repeated surprise launches, abrupt throttle lifts and sharp lane changes.
  7. Take short breaks. After a run, stop in a safe place, get fresh air, walk briefly if steady, drink a little water and wait for symptoms to settle before deciding whether to continue.
  8. Stop at the first warning signs. Nausea, warmth, sweating, yawning, excess saliva, dizziness or headache are signals to end the run, not to test your tolerance. Continuing until vomiting can prolong recovery.

Why “just close your eyes” is not a complete solution

Closing your eyes can remove a misleading visual signal, and the AAFP review lists it as a practical measure. It also removes the forward reference that helps many passengers anticipate motion. The 1982 experiment found more nausea with eyes closed than with a normal moving view, although the stationary reading field was worse. Try a clear forward view first; use closed eyes only if that is more comfortable for you and the vehicle is being driven gently.

Fresh air, temperature and recovery

Open a window or use outside-air ventilation if safe and comfortable. Fresh, moving air can reduce the hot, stale feeling that often accompanies nausea. The NHS recommends reducing motion, looking straight ahead, fresh air and breaks for water or a walk. Keep the cabin cool rather than stuffy, and avoid strong food, fuel or fragrance odors.

When symptoms start, tell the driver immediately. Stop the vehicle safely, sit upright or recline slightly with your head supported, and take slow breaths. Do not resume an acceleration run while you remain dizzy. If vomiting occurs, replace lost fluid gradually; large gulps can trigger another wave of nausea.

Ginger, acupressure and medicines: what is realistic

Ginger

The NHS lists ginger in tablet, biscuit or tea form as an option. Ginger chews or another familiar ginger product may be convenient, but evidence and individual response vary. Treat it as an optional aid, not protection that makes extreme launches safe. Follow the product label, and ask a clinician if you use blood-thinning medicine, have a bleeding disorder, gallbladder concerns or significant reflux.

Acupressure bands

Wrist bands that press an acupressure point are drug-free and easy to try. The NHS explicitly notes that they do not work for everyone. They should never be used as a reason to ignore early symptoms or continue an aggressive run.

Medication

The AAFP review identifies scopolamine as a first-line preventive option for people who want to remain awake. First-generation antihistamines can also work, but commonly cause drowsiness and other side effects. A medicine that makes a passenger sleepy can create a separate safety problem, and some products impair the driver enough that they are inappropriate before driving.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician which product, dose and timing fit your age, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, glaucoma risk, urinary-retention history, heart or neurologic conditions, other medicines and local labeling. Do not combine products casually, use someone else’s prescription or test a new medicine for the first time immediately before a high-speed event. A clinician can also help if ordinary travel repeatedly causes severe symptoms.

Option Potential advantage Limitations and safety questions Professional advice
Forward view, bracing and breaks No drug side effects; useful immediately Cannot eliminate sickness from every acceleration profile Not normally required
Ginger Available as tea, biscuit or tablet Optional benefit; may interact with conditions or medicines Ask if you have relevant medical conditions or take regular drugs
Acupressure band Non-drug and reusable Inconsistent benefit; fit can be uncomfortable Usually not required, but do not rely on it alone
Scopolamine Preventive option that may preserve alertness Prescription and anticholinergic effects; not suitable for everyone Clinician or pharmacist required
First-generation antihistamine Can reduce symptoms for some travelers Sedation and other side effects can affect safety Ask a pharmacist or clinician; follow local label

Training your tolerance without overdoing it

The CDC describes habituation or desensitization: repeated, controlled exposures can let the internal motion model adapt. There is no validated protocol in the cited material for extreme launches. If you try gradual exposure, make it genuinely gradual: begin with ordinary driving, then short and smooth accelerations, with full recovery between sessions. Increase only one factor at a time, and stop if symptoms appear. Do not use vomiting, faintness or persistent vertigo as a training target.

A driver should never perform aggressive acceleration while a passenger is symptomatic. On public roads, obey speed limits, traffic laws and occupant-restraint requirements; a private track does not remove the need for a safe passenger briefing and a plan to stop.

Vehicle and display technology: promising, not proven protection

A 2026 Applied Ergonomics on-road study reported that acceleration-based visual cues reduced passenger motion sickness as effectively as velocity-matched cues while causing less distraction. This points toward vehicle displays that show motion in a way the passenger can anticipate. It is an emerging design direction, not evidence that a consumer gadget will reliably prevent sickness in every high-performance car.

No broadly validated consumer device or universal success rate has been established for extreme acceleration. A live road video, for example, performed worse than direct forward views in the 2004 car study. Prefer the actual windshield view and physical stability over a screen marketed as a cure.

Troubleshooting common situations

“I feel fine in normal traffic but sick during launches.”

Use the front passenger position, remove screens, keep your head supported and ask for fewer, smoother launches with longer recovery periods. The problem is likely the larger and less predictable acceleration signal rather than ordinary road motion.

“Looking down makes me sick immediately.”

Stop the close visual task. Look toward the road or horizon, put the phone away and ask for fresh air. Reading and stationary visual fields intensify the mismatch when the body accelerates.

“The front seat is unavailable.”

Choose the safest legal seat with the best unobstructed forward view, often a properly belted center-rear position if the vehicle provides a suitable head restraint. Do not trade airbag or belt safety for a better view.

“I become dizzy after the car stops.”

Remain seated with head support, get fresh air and wait until balance returns. Do not drive, cycle or walk near traffic while dizzy. Recurrent or prolonged dizziness deserves medical advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A band or ginger did not work.”

That is consistent with their variable benefit. Return to the measures with the strongest practical rationale—forward vision, stable posture, no close-up screens, smooth driving, fresh air and early breaks—and discuss medication with a professional if the problem persists.

When motion sickness needs medical attention

Seek urgent medical help for fainting, chest pain, severe headache, weakness, confusion, trouble speaking, new hearing or vision loss, inability to keep fluids down, signs of serious dehydration or symptoms that continue long after the ride. Arrange a routine medical assessment for frequent severe episodes, symptoms during ordinary stationary activities, unexplained vertigo, or a change from your usual pattern. Motion sickness should not be used to explain away a potentially unrelated illness.

A practical passenger checklist

  • Choose a legal, airbag-safe seat with the best forward view.
  • Eat lightly; avoid alcohol; arrive rested and hydrated.
  • Adjust the head restraint, seatback and belt before moving.
  • Put away phones, books, cameras and other close visual tasks.
  • Look through the windshield toward the road or horizon.
  • Keep the head and torso supported; lean with bends when safe.
  • Ask for smooth, predictable acceleration and a pre-agreed stop signal.
  • Carry water and a sick bag; plan safe pull-over points.
  • Use ginger or an acupressure band only as optional aids.
  • Get pharmacist or clinician advice before medicines.
  • Stop at early symptoms and recover fully before traveling again.
