The safest way to reduce headlight glare at night is to stop looking at the lamps, guide your car by the lower-right road edge, keep your own headlights on low beam for approaching traffic, and slow down until you can stop within the distance you can see. Clean glass, mirrors and lamps; use your interior mirror’s night setting for vehicles behind you; keep the cabin dark enough to preserve contrast; and wear your current prescription rather than sunglasses or tinted lenses. If glare is extreme, persistent or accompanied by difficulty seeing at night, arrange an eye-care evaluation.
What to do the moment oncoming headlights cause glare
Glare can briefly overwhelm the visual contrast you need to see lane markings, pedestrians, cyclists, animals or road debris. Do not try to “win” against a bright lamp by staring at it, accelerating past it or switching on your own high beams. Use this sequence instead:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Keep your eyes away from the lamps. Shift your gaze toward the lower-right side of your lane, not at the center of the approaching vehicle.
- Use the road edge as a reference. Follow the right edge line, pavement edge or another safe roadside boundary until the vehicle passes. Keep your steering smooth; do not drift toward the shoulder.
- Leave your headlights on low beam. Low beam is the appropriate response to approaching traffic, even if the other driver has failed to dim their lights.
- Reduce speed if the visible distance shrinks. Choose a speed that lets you stop within the portion of road illuminated and visible to you.
- Restore your normal scan after the vehicle passes. Check the lane, mirrors and roadside before returning your gaze farther ahead.
This technique is recommended in guidance from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Looking down and right is not an invitation to ignore the road; it is a temporary gaze shift that keeps the bright source out of your central vision while the road edge provides positional guidance.

At night your eyes rely on a small amount of available light to detect contrast. A bright headlamp entering the field of view can make the surrounding scene appear darker for a short time. The effect is worse when the windshield, mirrors or headlamps scatter light, or when your eyes have reduced ability to adapt between dark and bright areas.

NHTSA’s technical report, Nighttime Glare and Driving Performance: Report to Congress, discusses beam distribution, lamp color, lamp size, and the cleanliness and condition of headlamps and windshields as glare-related factors. The report describes an initial step in an ongoing research program, so it should not be read as a complete ranking of every lamp technology or as proof that one retrofit product eliminates glare.
Discomfort is not the same as proven loss of visibility
The report says people experienced more discomfort when exposed to bluer high-intensity-discharge headlamps than to yellower halogen headlamps. It also states that there is no evidence linking the color of an oncoming headlamp to reductions in visibility. A lamp can therefore feel harsher without a demonstrated, universal reduction in the distance every driver can see. Your immediate response should still be the same: avoid direct gaze, maintain low beam and adjust speed.
Glare resistance and recovery
California DMV material uses the concepts of glare resistance and glare recovery when describing vision. Glare resistance is the ability to continue seeing when exposed to a bright source; glare recovery is the ability to regain useful vision after the source passes. Both can vary with age, eye health, corrective needs and the contrast of the road scene. If recovery is slow enough that you repeatedly lose track of the lane, treat that as a safety problem rather than something to solve with a darker lens.
Prepare the car before a night drive
Clean the windshield on both sides
A film on the inside of the windshield can be almost invisible in daylight yet produce halos and streaks at night. Clean the inside and outside surfaces, then inspect from the driver’s seat under a streetlight or another point source. Remove fingerprints and dashboard vapor residue, and replace wiper blades that smear water across the glass.
An automotive glass cleaner and a clean microfiber cloth are reasonable supplies for this task. They are maintenance aids, not independently proven glare cures. The goal is to remove the film that scatters light so the windshield transmits a clearer image.

Clean mirrors and headlamps
Clean the exterior mirror faces, the inside rearview mirror and the headlamp lenses. Dirt on a lamp can alter its beam: NHTSA reports that dirty or damaged headlamps may send higher light levels toward oncoming drivers while providing lower roadway illumination for the vehicle’s own driver. Clean lamps therefore help both you and other road users.
Inspect for damage and check headlight aim
Look for cracked or cloudy lamp lenses, moisture inside a housing, a loose mounting point, or a windshield chip in your normal sight line. Ask for headlight aim to be checked during a vehicle inspection or by a qualified repair shop. A lamp that is aimed too high can increase glare for approaching drivers; one aimed too low can leave your own lane poorly illuminated.
Recommended Free Tools
- Do not assume that replacing a bulb automatically restores correct aim.
- After suspension work, a collision, or a front-end repair, have aim verified again.
- Replace damaged lamps or lenses according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.
Set the vehicle controls to limit avoidable glare
Use the inside mirror’s night setting
When a vehicle behind you produces a bright reflection, flip the interior rearview mirror to its night position if it has a manual tab. Vehicles with automatic glare filtering may change the mirror’s tint electronically; leave that feature enabled unless the vehicle instructions say otherwise. Set the outside mirrors correctly so the following vehicle’s lamps are not unnecessarily reflected into the cabin.
Dim the dashboard without losing essential information
Keep unnecessary interior lights switched off. Set instrument brightness low enough to preserve your view of the road while keeping speed, warning lamps and other essential information readable. A brightly lit cabin reduces the contrast between the road and its surroundings, while a completely unreadable instrument panel creates a different hazard.
Use high beams only when they are permitted and useful
High beams can improve your view on an empty, dark road, but dim them for approaching traffic and whenever you are close enough to illuminate a vehicle ahead in its mirrors. If an oncoming driver leaves high beams on, do not retaliate by keeping yours on. Continue with low beam, shift your gaze to the lower-right road edge and slow down if necessary.

Choose a safe speed when glare reduces the visible road
Headlight glare changes the distance you can see, even if the speed-limit sign has not changed. The North Carolina Department of Transportation advises driving at a speed that allows you to stop within the visible distance. That means the correct response to a sudden bright vehicle may be a gentle lift of the accelerator or a controlled reduction in speed, not a sharp brake application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Increase following distance so you have more time to react to hazards hidden by glare.
- Be especially cautious near curves, hill crests, intersections and pedestrian crossings, where another road user may appear from a dark background.
- If you cannot identify the lane or road edge after slowing, pull over at a safe, legal location and wait for vision to recover rather than continuing blindly.
Keep steering inputs small while your gaze is shifted. A large correction toward the right edge can put the tires on a soft shoulder or into a curb.
Manage glare from vehicles behind you
Rear glare is different from oncoming glare because the source is reflected in your mirrors rather than directly ahead. Use the interior mirror’s night mode first. Keep the windshield and mirror surfaces clean so the reflected image remains defined instead of spreading into a broad halo.
Do not stare at the reflection or repeatedly adjust your mirrors while moving. If a following vehicle’s lamps are so bright that you cannot maintain a safe view, increase the space ahead and, when practical, let the vehicle pass. Avoid deliberately braking or obstructing it.
Protect your night vision with appropriate eyewear
Wear the prescription you actually need
Use your current corrective glasses or contact-lens prescription when driving. An outdated prescription can make signs and lane markings blurrier, forcing you to rely on bright sources for visual cues and making glare feel more intrusive. Keep lenses clean and positioned correctly; smudges create additional scatter.

Do not use sunglasses or tinted lenses at night
NHTSA’s guidance is explicit: “Do not wear sunglasses or tinted lenses at night.” Dark lenses reduce the amount of light reaching the eyes, which can make it harder to detect a person, object or lane edge outside the headlamp beam. The same caution applies to yellow, amber or other “night-driving” tints: the available guidance does not establish them as a proven glare solution, and tint conflicts with the agency’s warning about reducing light at night.
Know when glare warrants an eye-care visit
Arrange an eye-care evaluation if you have persistent or extreme light sensitivity, recurring difficulty seeing at night, slow recovery after a vehicle passes, halos that are new or worsening, or trouble identifying road edges even at low speed. NHTSA advises extremely light-sensitive drivers to ask an eye doctor whether the condition can be corrected. Its older-driver guidance recommends annual eye examinations from age 60 onward; that schedule is specific to the older-driver guidance and is not a universal interval for every person.
Do not wait for an appointment if vision changes suddenly, one eye is affected abruptly, or glare is accompanied by pain, flashes, a curtain-like shadow or sudden loss of vision. Stop driving and seek urgent medical advice.
Match the fix to the source of glare
| Source of glare | Immediate action | Vehicle or vision check |
|---|---|---|
| Oncoming headlights | Look toward the lower-right road edge, keep low beam, and slow to a speed that permits stopping within visible distance. | Clean windshield and lamps; verify headlight aim; use a current prescription. |
| Following vehicle | Switch the inside mirror to night mode or confirm automatic dimming is active. | Clean the mirror and windshield; set outside mirrors correctly. |
| Bright cabin or dashboard | Turn off unnecessary interior lights and reduce instrument brightness while keeping essential displays readable. | Recheck the setting before driving; avoid adjusting controls while moving. |
| Dirty, cloudy or damaged lamps | Clean them before the trip and avoid driving at a speed your reduced illumination cannot support. | Have damaged lenses, moisture or incorrect aim inspected by a qualified technician. |
| Persistent personal light sensitivity | Stop using tinted night-driving eyewear and reduce night driving until you can see safely. | Schedule an eye-care evaluation and update corrective lenses if needed. |
A repeatable pre-drive checklist
- Clean the inside and outside of the windshield.
- Clean the inside mirror, outside mirrors and headlamp lenses.
- Check for cracks, clouding, moisture or other damage.
- Confirm your glasses or contact lenses match your current prescription and are clean.
- Set the instrument illumination to a comfortable, readable level and switch off unnecessary cabin lights.
- Confirm the interior mirror’s night or automatic-dimming function works.
- Use low beam when traffic approaches and know how to switch from high beam without searching for the control.
- Plan extra time and distance if the route includes unlit roads, wet pavement, hills or heavy traffic.
What not to do
- Do not stare at the lamps. Direct gaze keeps the brightest source in the most visually sensitive part of your field of view.
- Do not wear sunglasses or tinted lenses at night. They reduce available light and are specifically discouraged by NHTSA.
- Do not leave high beams on to punish another driver. That increases glare for everyone and can violate traffic rules.
- Do not polish over a headlight-aim problem. Cleaning cannot correct a lamp that is mounted or aimed incorrectly.
- Do not assume discomfort proves a lamp color is unsafe. NHTSA reports greater discomfort from bluer high-intensity-discharge lamps in the material discussed, but does not establish a universal visibility loss caused by oncoming lamp color.
- Do not continue at the same speed when you cannot see far enough to stop. Slow down or stop safely until the visual field is adequate.
When changing driving conditions make glare worse
Wet pavement
Water on the road reflects light back toward the driver and can erase lane contrast. Increase following distance, make speed reductions earlier and use the road edge as a reference when an approaching vehicle creates a bright reflection.
Dirty or fogged glass
Interior condensation and exterior spray can turn a small lamp into a large diffuse bloom. Use the vehicle’s defogging and washer systems before visibility deteriorates, then stop somewhere safe if the glass cannot be cleared.

Unfamiliar or poorly lit roads
On roads without continuous lighting, the loss of visual reference during glare is greater. Reduce speed before entering curves and hill crests, scan for reflective signs and roadside users, and avoid making navigation or phone adjustments while your visual attention is compromised.
How to decide whether the problem is the car or your eyes
Start with the simple, reversible checks: clean the glass and lamps, verify mirror and dashboard settings, and confirm headlight aim. If glare remains unusually severe after those checks, compare your experience as a driver with your experience as a passenger. Notice whether the problem occurs with every vehicle or only with certain lamp arrangements, whether one eye is worse, and whether recovery is slow after the source passes. These observations can help an eye-care professional, but they do not diagnose a condition.
A vehicle can create excess glare for other people without causing the driver’s own discomfort, especially when lamps are dirty, damaged or aimed too high. Conversely, a clean, correctly aimed vehicle does not rule out a vision issue in the driver. Treat both possibilities seriously.
