The most reliable way to reduce exposure to poor outdoor air is to use layers: check local air-quality conditions, keep polluted outdoor air from entering, filter the room or home where you spend time, avoid creating more particles indoors, and ventilate again when conditions improve. During smoke events, closed windows are useful only if the space can remain safely cool; if it becomes dangerously hot, move to a cleaner, cooler location rather than treating a sealed home as automatically safe.
What “poor outdoor air” means for an indoor plan
This guidance is strongest for outdoor particulate pollution, including fine particles in wildfire smoke. Particles can enter through open windows and doors, gaps around the building envelope, and normal air exchange even when openings are shut. EPA advises, “Keep your windows closed when outdoor pollutants are high,” and explains how outdoor particles contribute to indoor particle levels in its Sources of Indoor Particulate Matter (PM) guidance.

Particle-control steps should not be presented as a universal solution for every pollutant. Air cleaners may target particles, gases, or both, and no device removes every pollutant. A particle filter is therefore not proof of protection from gases such as some volatile chemicals or from every outdoor contaminant. Identify the pollutant named in your local alert and follow instructions from your state, local, or public-health agency.
1. Check outdoor conditions before changing your routine
Use AirNow.gov or your state or local air agency to see current particle conditions and forecasts. Check before opening windows, exercising outdoors, starting ventilation, or deciding whether children, older adults, or anyone with a respiratory condition should remain inside. Wildfire smoke can change quickly as winds, fire behavior, and local weather shift, so a clear-looking morning does not guarantee clean air later.

- When outdoor particle pollution is high: keep windows and exterior doors closed as much as practical, reduce unnecessary trips outside, and start filtration in the room where people spend the most time.
- When officials advise staying indoors during wildfire smoke: follow that instruction and use the smoke-specific steps below.
- When conditions improve: use the cleaner interval to exchange indoor air, provided the home can be ventilated without bringing pollution back inside.
Air-quality information is a decision input, not a substitute for heat and safety judgment. If closing the home makes indoor temperatures unsafe, the correct response is to seek a cooler, cleaner place.
2. Stop unnecessary outdoor air from entering
Close the main openings
Close windows and exterior doors while outdoor pollution is high. Keep doors closed between trips and avoid propping them open for convenience. Particles also enter through cracks and crevices, so closing a window does not make the home perfectly sealed; it does, however, remove the largest controllable pathways.
Set central systems to recirculate
If your central heating or cooling system has a fresh-air intake, set it to recirculation or close the outdoor-air damper when the equipment allows that setting. During wildfire smoke, EPA specifically recommends recirculation or closing the outdoor intake where possible. Do not disable equipment protections or ventilation required for combustion safety, and consult the system manual or a qualified technician if the controls are unclear.
Keep safe egress available
Closed windows and doors must not block an emergency exit. A cleaner-air room should have a usable way out, and occupants should still follow fire, gas, and other emergency instructions. Reduce leakage where practical, but never tape or seal a required exit or cover a combustion appliance’s safety opening.
3. Filter the room where people spend time
A portable air cleaner is a room-scale tool. It is most useful when placed in the bedroom, living room, or other space occupied for long periods, with doors and windows closed as much as safely possible. EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance sizes a unit by its smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR): choose a smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet.

Use the CADR sizing rule
Multiply the room’s floor area by two-thirds, then select a model whose tobacco-smoke CADR meets or exceeds that result. For example, a 300-square-foot room needs a smoke CADR of at least 200 under EPA’s rule. If a room has unusually high ceilings, an open layout, or frequent door opening, a larger-capacity unit or more than one unit may provide a more practical margin, but EPA’s stated rule is based on floor area.
| Room area | Minimum smoke CADR using EPA’s two-thirds rule | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| 150 sq ft | 100 | Choose a smoke CADR of 100 or higher. |
| 300 sq ft | 200 | Choose a smoke CADR of 200 or higher. |
| 500 sq ft | 334 | Choose a smoke CADR of at least 334; round up when models use whole-number ratings. |
| 800 sq ft | 534 | Consider a larger unit or multiple units if one model cannot reach this rating. |
The CADR figures above are applications of EPA’s sizing formula, not health-effect measurements. Check that the rating is specifically for tobacco smoke, because CADR categories are not interchangeable.

- Put the cleaner in the occupied room, not in an unused hallway where its airflow cannot serve people directly.
- Leave clearance around the intake and outlet as the manufacturer specifies; blocked airflow reduces performance.
- Run it continuously during the pollution episode when practical, using a higher setting when smoke is heavy or the room is occupied by more people.
- Keep doors and windows closed while the unit is doing particle-control work, unless opening them is needed for safe cooling or an emergency.
- Choose equipment designed to produce little or no ozone. Do not use an ozone generator in an occupied space.
EPA’s Indoor Air Filtration guidance generally favors commercial cleaners with known performance. A portable cleaner can reduce particles in its room, but it does not automatically clean every room in the building.
4. Use central HVAC filtration when the system can handle it
A central forced-air system can distribute filtered air throughout the home, but only when the filter fits correctly and the equipment can move air safely through it. EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest MERV rating the system can accommodate, in its wildfire-smoke guidance.
Verify compatibility before installing a higher-MERV filter
- Find the filter size and airflow direction printed on the existing filter or in the equipment manual.
- Check the furnace, air-handler, or heat-pump manufacturer’s allowable filter rating and pressure-drop requirements.
- If the documentation is missing, ask an HVAC technician to confirm that MERV 13 or another high-efficiency filter will not restrict airflow beyond the system’s design.
- Install the filter with the arrow pointing toward the blower or air handler, and make sure it seats without gaps.
A high rating is not a safe blanket recommendation if the filter is the wrong size or incompatible with the blower. Poor fit allows bypass leakage; excessive resistance can reduce airflow or stress equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and replacement schedule, and replace the filter sooner if it becomes visibly dirty or loaded with smoke particles.

Run the fan to move air through the filter
Use the thermostat’s fan setting or circulation mode to operate the blower as often as the system and comfort allow. Continuous operation can improve filtering during a smoke episode, but it also uses electricity and may affect temperature or humidity. If the system cannot maintain safe indoor conditions with the fan running, prioritize safe cooling and consult a professional.
5. Make one cleaner-air room
When the entire home cannot be kept equally clean, concentrate protection where people spend the most time. EPA’s cleaner-air-room instructions suggest a room large enough for occupants to be comfortable, such as a bedroom with an attached bathroom.
- Choose the room. Pick a space that can hold everyone who needs protection without crowding, has a closable door, and permits safe egress.
- Close the envelope. Shut windows and the room door while outdoor pollution is high. Keep the door closed as much as practical, but do not compromise emergency exit access.
- Control temperature. Use air conditioning, a fan that recirculates indoor air, or other safe cooling available in the home. If the room becomes dangerously hot, relocate to a cooler, cleaner building.
- Filter continuously. Operate a properly sized portable cleaner, or use compatible central HVAC filtration with recirculation.
- Remove particle sources. Do not smoke, vape, burn candles or incense, use a fireplace or wood stove, or spray aerosols in the room.
- Spend the high-exposure hours there. Sleeping, working, and caring for children in the cleaner room reduces time in less-filtered parts of the home.
Keep supplies such as water, medicines, chargers, and temperature-appropriate clothing in the room so occupants do not repeatedly open exterior doors during the smoke period.
6. Do not add more particles indoors
Indoor sources can undermine the benefit of closing windows and filtering. During smoky conditions:
- Do not smoke or vape indoors.
- Skip candles, incense, and fireplaces or wood-burning stoves.
- Avoid aerosol sprays and other products that release particles unless essential.
- Limit high-heat cooking, frying, grilling, and broiling. Use a range hood that vents outdoors only when the outdoor-air path and local conditions make that appropriate; otherwise, avoid creating the emissions.
- Avoid vacuuming unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter. Ordinary vacuuming can resuspend settled dust.
- Use a damp cloth or mop to collect settled dust instead of dry dusting.
These steps address indoor particle sources; they do not make a particle filter capable of removing gases. If an indoor source is producing smoke, fumes, or combustion products, stop the source and follow the relevant safety guidance rather than relying on an air cleaner.

7. Balance smoke protection with heat and ventilation
Keeping windows shut can lower particle entry, but it can also trap heat, humidity, odors, and indoor-generated pollutants. EPA’s frequent questions about wildland-fire smoke emphasize that staying closed up should not override cooling and safety needs.
When the home is still safe and tolerable
Keep openings closed, use air conditioning or safe recirculating fans, and run appropriate filtration. Monitor indoor temperature and the condition of occupants, especially infants, older adults, and people with heart or lung disease.
When the home becomes too hot
Do not assume that a sealed house is safer than a cooler location. If air conditioning cannot keep the space at a safe temperature, go to a cleaner, cooler building such as a public cooling center, workplace, relative’s home, or other location identified by local officials. Take medications, chargers, water, and any needed respiratory equipment. If anyone develops severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or other emergency symptoms, seek urgent medical help.
When outdoor air improves
Use a cleaner-air interval to air out the home. Open windows or use the HVAC fresh-air intake when local conditions are clearly better and the temperature is manageable. You can then return the system to its normal ventilation setting. If smoke returns, close openings and switch back to recirculation promptly.

8. Compare the main filtration options
| Option | Coverage | Performance measure | Best fit | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portable room air cleaner | One room or nearby area | Smoke CADR; EPA’s sizing rule is at least two-thirds of room area in square feet | Bedrooms, living rooms, or a designated cleaner-air room | Does not automatically clean the whole home; requires replacement filters and electricity. |
| Central forced-air HVAC filter | Potentially multiple rooms served by the duct system | MERV 13 or the highest rating the system can accommodate | Homes with compatible central heating or cooling | Compatibility, fit, airflow, and fan operation must be verified. |
| DIY box fan and high-efficiency filter | Usually one room | Performance varies by design, filter, sealing, and fan | Temporary or lower-cost option when commercial equipment is unavailable | EPA generally prefers commercial cleaners with known performance; inspect construction and avoid unsafe electrical or airflow setups. |
For any option, check ozone emissions, replacement-filter availability, noise, and whether the equipment can run for the hours you need. EPA does not endorse a specific brand. Choose by measurable fit and performance rather than a marketing label.

9. Use a box-fan cleaner only as a temporary alternative
A box fan paired with a high-efficiency filter can provide a lower-cost way to move air through filter media when a commercial cleaner is not available or affordable. Its actual performance depends on the fan, filter resistance, how well the filter is attached, and the design of the assembly.
- Use a sound, undamaged fan and filter of the correct dimensions.
- Attach the filter in the correct airflow direction and seal obvious gaps so air does not bypass the media.
- Keep the assembly stable, away from water and combustible materials, and clear of blocked intakes.
- Inspect the filter for loading and replace it when dirty or according to the filter maker’s instructions.
- Do not use a damaged fan, defeat a safety guard, or leave an improvised assembly where children or pets can pull it over.
Because construction quality varies, treat this as a temporary measure rather than assuming it delivers a published CADR equivalent to a tested commercial cleaner.
10. If you must go outside, add personal protection
Home filtration cannot protect you during time spent outdoors. If an essential trip cannot wait during unhealthy wildfire smoke, EPA advises using a well-fitting N95 respirator as a supporting measure. Fit matters: the respirator must seal closely to the face, and facial hair or an incorrect size can reduce protection. An N95 does not remove gases, does not clean the home, and should not replace reducing outdoor time when officials advise staying inside.

EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home states: “Portable air cleaners and HVAC filters can reduce indoor air pollution; however, they cannot remove all pollutants from the air.” That limitation affects both product choice and expectations.
- Particles versus gases: A particle filter can reduce smoke particles but is not established here as protection against every gas or vapor.
- Source control still matters: An air cleaner cannot make indoor smoking, combustion, or heavy aerosol use harmless.
- Coverage is limited: A portable unit works primarily in the room it serves; doors, walls, and airflow determine how much reaches other spaces.
- Ozone is not a cleaning shortcut: Ozone irritates the lungs. Avoid ozone generators and choose equipment tested to emit little or no ozone.
- Maintenance is part of performance: A clogged filter, incorrect installation, or disabled fan reduces the intended airflow.
12. Troubleshoot common situations
The room still smells smoky
Confirm that windows, exterior doors, and any HVAC fresh-air intake are closed or set to recirculation. Check the portable cleaner’s filter orientation and intake clearance, verify that it is sized for the room, and look for indoor sources such as cooking, candles, fireplaces, or smoking. Odor alone does not identify every pollutant, so continue following the local air-quality alert.
The HVAC system struggles after a filter upgrade
Turn to the equipment manual or an HVAC professional to verify MERV compatibility and pressure drop. Confirm the filter size and airflow direction, and check whether the blower is operating normally. Do not keep forcing an incompatible filter through a system that cannot maintain safe airflow.
The home is getting dangerously hot
Use the safest available cooling and recirculating-air options, but do not remain in an unsafe temperature merely to keep windows closed. Move to a cooler, cleaner location and follow local heat and smoke instructions.

Pollution improves briefly, then worsens
Use the improvement to ventilate only while local readings and forecasts support it. Close openings again when conditions deteriorate, return HVAC to recirculation, and resume cleaner-room filtration.
Quick Recap
13. A simple routine for a smoke episode
- Check AirNow.gov or your local air agency before opening windows or planning outdoor activity.
- If pollution is high, close windows and exterior doors; set central HVAC to recirculate or close the outdoor intake where the system permits.
- Move occupants to the designated cleaner-air room and start a properly sized portable cleaner or compatible central filtration.
- Remove indoor particle sources: smoking, vaping, candles, incense, fireplaces, aerosols, and high-heat cooking.
- Check temperature, comfort, and symptoms regularly. If the home cannot stay safely cool, relocate.
- Inspect filters and replace them when dirty or according to manufacturer guidance.
- When outdoor air is demonstrably cleaner, ventilate the home, then return to normal settings before the next pollution increase.
