What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The biggest savings come from sending fewer, less precise location updates and stopping live sharing as soon as you no longer need it. Location sharing has three adjustable demands: precision, update frequency and delivery speed. Higher precision, more frequent calculations and lower delay generally require more power. Sharing also needs an internet connection, but there is no reliable, cross-app figure for megabytes used per hour. Use the app’s sharing controls first, then measure that app’s cellular use on your own phone.
What actually uses battery when you share a location
A phone must determine where it is, decide when to calculate that position again and send the result to a service. Those steps create three practical battery levers:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Precision: A precise fix can use more demanding location sources. A coarser area may be sufficient when a contact only needs to know which neighborhood or route you are in.
- Frequency: Recomputing and transmitting a position more often increases work. A one-time location or occasional refresh is lighter than a continuously updated trip.
- Delivery delay: An update that must arrive immediately normally costs more than one that can be delayed or batched. Android Developers describes delayed or batched updates as an efficiency option for apps that do not need an immediate fix.
These are general platform principles, not a promise of a particular percentage of savings. Battery results vary with signal strength, screen use, navigation, weather, phone model, operating-system version and the sharing app’s design. Android’s developer guidance warns that background location can significantly affect battery life, but its platform figures do not predict the result for every consumer sharing service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the least demanding sharing mode that still solves the problem
| What the recipient needs | Lower-demand choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Where you are right now | Send a one-time location or a static pin | The recipient will not see movement after the message is sent. |
| Proof that you are travelling safely | Use live sharing only for the trip, with the shortest useful duration | Updates stop when the selected period ends. |
| Approximate area or arrival context | Use reduced precision where the app and phone permit it | The map may place you in a wider area or show a less exact route. |
| Immediate, continuous tracking | Keep precise, frequent background updates enabled | This is the most useful for real-time monitoring and usually the most demanding for battery. |
Do not lower precision when the recipient must find the exact entrance to a building, coordinate a pickup at a large venue or respond to an emergency. The right setting is the least precise and least frequent one that remains safe and useful.

Android: reduce power without breaking the share
1. Start in the sharing app
Open the app that is sending your location and inspect its sharing duration, update or accuracy choices. Select a one-time location when a live trail is unnecessary. If the app offers a time limit, choose the shortest period that covers the journey rather than leaving sharing on indefinitely.
Then check the app’s Android permission. On Android 12 and later, an app can have separate access to approximate or precise location. A live-sharing feature may also request background access so it can continue when the screen is locked. Menu wording differs between Android versions and phone manufacturers, so look for the app’s location permission in the system settings if the in-app control is unclear.
2. Understand Android’s accuracy controls
Android distinguishes an app’s precise-location permission from the device-wide Location Accuracy setting on Android 12 and newer. Changing one does not automatically make the other unnecessary. Review both before assuming a global switch will reduce consumption.
Some phones expose a Battery saving location mode. Google describes this mode as favoring lower-power sources such as Wi-Fi and mobile networks. It can be appropriate when an approximate position is enough. Test the result in the actual sharing app: a position that updates too slowly or appears too broadly may defeat the reason you shared it.
Do not confuse Battery saving with Device only. Google describes Device only as relying on GPS and sensors; it can estimate location more slowly and use more battery. Selecting GPS-only because it sounds simpler is therefore not a dependable battery-saving tactic.

3. Pause Google Location Sharing when live updates are not needed
Google’s Location Sharing controls include Use Location Sharing. Turning it off pauses updates without deleting the configured shares. When you turn it back on, the shares can resume. The setting is tied to the particular device and account, so check the account and phone currently in use.
You can also stop sharing with an individual person instead of pausing every share. That is useful when one journey has ended but another contact still needs access. A pause does not turn off the phone’s location system: other services, including Maps, may continue to use location.
4. Treat Android background behavior as a limit, not a schedule
Android applies background limits. The developer documentation describes background gathering being throttled so that, under the limits it discusses, location may be computed and delivered only a few times an hour. That description is not a guaranteed cadence for every location-sharing app. An app’s foreground service, permissions, operating-system release and manufacturer changes can alter behavior.
Use the app’s own end time and pause controls rather than relying on an assumed background interval. If updates are too sparse for a safety trip, restore the permission or accuracy needed for that trip instead of trying to defeat the platform’s limits.
iPhone: review per-app access before changing system-wide services
1. Open the location privacy controls
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Select the app used for sharing and review its permission and the Precise Location option where shown.
Apple provides per-app and system-service controls. Use the sharing app’s entry to match access to the task: a trip that must continue while the iPhone is locked may require background permission, while a one-time pin may not.

2. Decide whether background access is necessary
Apple’s developer guidance says most apps need location only while actively used, but that is guidance for app makers, not proof that a particular sharing app will continue live updates with foreground-only access. If the recipient must watch your movement while the screen is locked, removing background access may stop or degrade the share. If you only need to share during a meeting or short trip, stop sharing outside that window instead of granting background access all day.

Turning Location Services off prevents apps from accessing location and can limit app functionality. It may stop the very sharing feature you are trying to control and affect unrelated navigation, weather, camera or safety functions. Change the sharing app’s permission or end the share first; use the global switch only when you intentionally want location unavailable to all apps.
How to reduce mobile-data use without guessing
What is established
Google lists an active internet connection as a requirement for Location Sharing. That connection may be Wi-Fi or cellular data. The official platform material does not provide a current, general megabytes-per-hour figure for ordinary location sharing, and different apps may send different numbers of updates or additional map and messaging data.
Do not treat a figure from one phone, app or trip as a universal benchmark. A screen showing an app’s cellular total may include map tiles, photos, messages or other traffic in addition to coordinates.
Measure your own app over a comparable period
- Record the sharing app’s cellular-data total in your phone’s mobile-data settings. The exact menu label varies by operating system and manufacturer.
- Note the measurement period and whether the phone was on Wi-Fi, cellular service or both.
- Run a representative test: use the same sharing mode and a similar trip length, then record the total again.
- Repeat with live sharing paused, or with a shorter duration or less precise setting, for a comparable period.
- Compare the change, while noting other activity by the app during each interval.
This is a personal measurement, not a platform-wide data rate. Reset the phone’s statistics if that option exists, or write down a baseline and end reading so unrelated historical traffic is not mistaken for one trip’s usage.

Do not assume a data-saving mode will throttle location sharing
The available platform documentation does not establish that Android Data Saver or iPhone Low Data Mode changes every location-sharing service in a predictable way. Such a mode may affect background networking, but the app can respond differently. Check the app after enabling it: confirm that updates still arrive when expected and that the recipient sees a current position.
Pause, stop or disable: three different actions
Pause a service’s live updates
Use a service-level pause when you want to keep the share configured but temporarily stop real-time updates. Google’s Use Location Sharing control works this way. Other apps may use different labels. Verify the status in the app after pausing.
Stop sharing with a person
Use an individual stop control when one recipient no longer needs access. This limits the interruption to that person and leaves other intentional shares alone. Review the recipient list after ending a trip; a duration timer is safer than relying on memory.
Disable location access for an app or the device
Removing an app’s permission prevents that app from obtaining location, while disabling system Location Services affects all apps. These are privacy controls, not finely tuned battery settings. They can also make navigation, safety features or other location-dependent functions fail.
A practical setup for common situations
Walking or driving to meet someone
- Choose live sharing only for the estimated journey and add a small safety margin.
- Keep precision high enough for the pickup point.
- End the share when you arrive; do not leave an open-ended session running in the background.
Checking in during a long trip
- Send periodic one-time locations if the recipient does not need a continuous trail.
- If continuous monitoring is required, use the app’s shortest useful live interval and accept that more frequent updates cost more power.
- Carry a charging plan for the trip, but remember that a power bank adds available charge; it does not reduce the phone’s consumption.
Sharing an approximate area
- Use approximate or reduced-precision permission when an exact door, road position or route is not important.
- Check the map result from the recipient’s side before depending on it.
- Restore precise access for tasks where an error of several streets could matter.
Leaving a share on for family safety
- Agree on who needs access and how long it should last.
- Use a duration or a scheduled check-in rather than an indefinite share when continuous tracking is not necessary.
- Explain that pausing live updates does not necessarily disable all location use on the phone.
Troubleshooting: when the lower-power setup fails
The recipient sees an old position
First check the internet connection and whether you accidentally paused the service. Then review the app’s background permission and battery restrictions. If the app requires precise access for its live feature, restore it for the duration of the trip. Android’s background limits and iPhone permission choices can prevent continuous updates; there is no universal update schedule to override.

The position is too vague
Switch from approximate to precise app permission or choose a higher-accuracy mode supported by the phone. Confirm that the device-wide Location Accuracy setting has not been changed in a way the app cannot compensate for. More precision can increase power demand, so return to approximate access after the exact-location task ends.
Battery falls quickly even with infrequent sharing
Check whether navigation, a bright screen, weak cellular reception or other background apps are consuming power at the same time. Location sharing is only one battery load. Compare a period with sharing paused against a similar period with the same other activities; do not attribute the entire difference to coordinates without controlling those factors.
Pausing did not stop all location indicators
A service-level pause affects that service’s updates. It does not necessarily stop Maps or another app from accessing the phone’s location. Review per-app permissions if you want to limit unrelated access, and use the global Location Services switch only when you understand the wider impact.

Data usage appears higher than expected
Check the measurement window and whether the app downloaded maps, media or messages. Record a clean baseline, repeat a comparable test and compare the app’s total with sharing paused. Because no universal per-hour figure is established, a phone-specific comparison is more defensible than an online estimate.
A quick decision checklist
- Does the recipient need a live trail, or only your current place? Choose a one-time location when possible.
- Does the task require exact positioning? If not, consider approximate or reduced precision.
- How long must updates continue? Set an end time and stop the share afterward.
- Must updates work while the screen is locked? Keep the background permission required by that app, but remove it when the use case ends.
- Are you changing an app permission, pausing a service or disabling all Location Services? Pick the narrowest control that meets your goal.
- Are you trying to lower data use? Measure the app over comparable intervals rather than relying on a universal number.
- Does the lower-power setting make the location too old or vague? Restore the minimum accuracy and freshness needed for safety.
What the evidence can—and cannot—promise
Android’s documentation provides platform-level principles: higher accuracy, more frequent computation and lower latency generally consume more power, while delayed or batched work can be more efficient. It also describes background gathering being limited to only a few computations or deliveries per hour under the documented background restrictions. Those statements explain why reducing demand helps; they are not a battery guarantee for a named app or phone.
Apple’s developer documentation similarly advises apps to request an accuracy appropriate to their use. On iPhone, the user-facing choice is to review each app’s permission, precise-location option and background behavior. Neither platform documentation supplies a universal consumer percentage for battery saved by location sharing, or a standard mobile-data allowance per hour.
The dependable approach is therefore conditional: reduce precision, frequency or urgency only when the recipient can still use the information; pause or stop sharing when it is no longer needed; and measure your own cellular total if data usage matters.
