There is no universal driver procedure for recalibrating a windshield camera. The required method depends on your vehicle’s exact make, model year, trim and camera-equipped driver-assistance system. Before normal use, ask the glass installer or a qualified ADAS repair facility to check the current manufacturer service procedure, perform every required calibration and scan, and give you confirmation of the result. A warning light—or a normal-looking test drive—is not proof that calibration was unnecessary.
Why windshield replacement can require camera calibration
A forward-facing camera is mounted in a precise relationship to the windshield and the vehicle body. Removing and reinstalling the camera, changing the glass, disturbing its bracket or fitting incompatible glass can alter that relationship. Even a small change in the camera’s view can affect systems such as forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning or lane-centering.

Whether calibration is mandatory is vehicle-specific. The correct answer comes from the vehicle maker’s current repair information, not from visual inspection or a generic online checklist. I-CAR’s ADAS guidance says post-repair work must follow the original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) procedure and may require a scan tool, special aiming equipment and a drive under prescribed conditions (I-CAR ADAS Collision Repair Diagnostics Process).
Some systems use the camera only for warnings; others use it to command braking or steering assistance. That difference does not let an owner decide whether calibration is needed. The vehicle maker may require a procedure after any windshield replacement, after camera removal, after bracket work, or only under specified conditions. Treat the manufacturer instruction as the controlling requirement.

First identify the exact camera and vehicle procedure
Give the shop the complete vehicle identity before work starts:
- Make, model and model year.
- Trim or package when it changes the ADAS hardware.
- The name of the camera or system shown in the owner’s manual or dashboard messages.
- Whether the camera, its bracket, wiring or windshield was removed or replaced.
- Any warning message or diagnostic trouble code that appeared after the repair.
Ask the shop to consult current manufacturer information for that exact configuration. I-CAR’s OEM Calibration Requirements Search is an index, not a complete substitute for the manufacturer’s information; I-CAR explicitly says its vehicle matrix does not include every vehicle and that the current vehicle-maker procedure must be verified.
Model-year changes can alter the camera, bracket, target pattern or software even when the vehicle name is unchanged. A procedure for the same model from a different year, trim or market is not automatically applicable. Ask the facility to record the procedure title or information number and its revision date on your work order.

“Calibration” can describe different operations. Your vehicle may require one method or a combination.

The Automotive Glass Safety Council (AGRSS) describes the need for OEM-approved calibration equipment and procedures, or an equivalent documented as suitable for the specific vehicle. Equipment must not be used outside the vehicle coverage in its database (AGRSS Compliance Checklist Rev. 8, revised July 14, 2023). Do not infer a target distance, route, speed or drive time from another make or model.
Static work is usually performed in a controlled bay because target position, floor level and vehicle measurements must be known. Dynamic work depends on the road environment and the vehicle’s diagnostic instructions. Bosch’s ADAS glass-fitter guidance likewise distinguishes workshop target procedures from road-based learning or verification; the equipment and software still have to cover the particular vehicle.
What a qualified facility should do
1. Confirm the replacement glass and mounting
The windshield must be compatible with the vehicle’s camera and any optical area used by the system. The technician should check that the camera bracket, clips, adhesive and attachments are the correct parts, firmly secured and free of damage or contamination. The camera must be installed in the intended position before aiming begins.

The facility should compare the replacement part and camera attachment with the vehicle-maker requirements, not rely only on physical dimensions.
2. Check the vehicle’s preconditions
Manufacturer procedures can specify tire pressure, fuel or load, ride height, steering-wheel position, battery voltage, lighting, floor level, weather, windshield cleanliness and the absence of other faults. The shop should follow the listed conditions rather than substitute its own judgment.
Ask whether the procedure requires the wheels and steering to be straight, a level surface, a particular vehicle load or a minimum battery state. A calibration can fail because a prerequisite is wrong, and repeating the same operation without correcting that condition does not establish a valid result.

3. Scan the vehicle
A diagnostic scan can identify stored faults, confirm which ADAS modules are present and place the system in the mode needed for calibration. The appropriate scan tool is the one required or accepted for that vehicle and procedure.

4. Perform static aiming when required
For a static procedure, the facility positions calibrated targets at measured locations relative to the vehicle. The technician enters the vehicle data and follows the diagnostic system’s aiming sequence. Floor slope, wheel alignment, target height and distance can matter; an apparently centered target is not proof of correct setup.
Targets are not interchangeable decorations. Their pattern, size, height, reflectivity and placement can be specified by the manufacturer or by an approved equipment database. A frame designed for one coverage list should not be assumed to support another vehicle merely because the target can be placed in front of it.
5. Complete the prescribed dynamic drive when required
A dynamic procedure teaches or verifies the camera while the vehicle is driven under manufacturer-specified conditions. The route, speed, lane markings, weather and traffic requirements differ by system. The technician should not replace a required drive with an arbitrary short trip.
Some systems will not complete learning unless the road has suitable lane lines, visibility and traffic conditions. If the drive is interrupted or the conditions fall outside the procedure, the diagnostic tool may report an incomplete operation rather than a pass. The facility should explain whether another attempt is required.
6. Run post-calibration checks
The facility should complete any post-repair scan, fault-code clearing, self-test or functional verification listed by the manufacturer. The exact tests vary, so a universal pass/fail checklist does not exist.
Verification can include checking that no relevant diagnostic trouble codes remain, that the camera module communicates correctly and that the dashboard status matches the completed procedure. A road test may be part of verification, but it cannot replace a required static or dynamic calibration step.
7. Record the result
Ask for the calibration or scan report, or written confirmation stating which procedure was required, which steps were completed and whether they passed. Keep it with the windshield invoice and vehicle service records.

Useful documentation identifies the vehicle, mileage or date, system addressed, equipment or diagnostic process used, and any unresolved restrictions. If the shop cannot print a report, request a signed work-order note that states the result and any follow-up required.

What you should do after the windshield is installed
- Do not assume calibration is optional. Ask the installer whether the manufacturer requires camera removal, reinstallation, static aiming, a dynamic drive or a combination.
- Request the exact procedure name. A credible answer identifies the vehicle system and the manufacturer source used, rather than saying only that the camera “looks fine.”
- Confirm equipment coverage. Ask whether the targets and diagnostic system are approved by the vehicle maker or documented as an equivalent for your exact vehicle.
- Ask whether all steps succeeded. If a dynamic drive is required, ask whether it completed under the specified conditions.
- Obtain documentation. Request a scan or calibration report and note the date, vehicle mileage and facility that performed the work.
- Follow any remaining warning instructions. If a warning, fault message or failed calibration remains, have the vehicle diagnosed before relying on the affected assistance features.
Ask these questions before paying for the job, not only after a warning appears. A glass installer may subcontract the calibration, so find out who performs it, where it occurs and whether the vehicle must remain for a separate road drive. Confirm that the quoted service includes every required operation rather than only a code reset.
Why a generic DIY target or reset is unsafe
The available professional guidance does not provide one recalibration sequence that works for an unspecified vehicle. Cameras may use different target patterns, measurements, software modes and driving requirements. Aligning a camera by eye, placing a homemade target at a guessed distance, disconnecting the battery or clearing a warning is not a substitute for the manufacturer process.
Even professional equipment is not automatically interchangeable. AGRSS requires equipment to be suitable for the specific vehicles covered, while I-CAR notes that procedures may require special tools and aiming equipment. A shop that owns an ADAS frame is not necessarily equipped for every camera system.

Unless the manufacturer procedure accepts that tool for your exact vehicle, it may only read codes or initiate a limited function. The same caution applies to online instructions that specify one universal target distance or a fixed road speed.
A vehicle-specific example: Subaru EyeSight
Subaru’s service bulletin 12-192-15R, revised February 1, 2021, illustrates why the vehicle procedure matters. It instructs that the EyeSight camera be removed before windshield removal, then reinstalled and calibrated using the complete applicable inspection/adjustment and automatic-adjustment procedures. The bulletin states:
“NEVER return a vehicle to a customer which has not had the complete EyeSight Camera Adjustment and Inspection AND the Automatic Adjustment procedures performed successfully following any windshield replacement.”
For that specific Subaru procedure, if automatic adjustment has not completed after a 30-minute drive, the adjustment and inspection procedure must be repeated and the attempt made a second time. This timing and instruction apply to the named EyeSight service procedure; they are not a rule for other makes or camera systems. What to do if calibration fails or a warning remains
Warning appears immediately after replacement
Return to the installer or an ADAS-qualified facility and request a diagnostic scan. The cause may be incomplete calibration, an incorrectly seated camera, damaged hardware, incompatible glass, wiring trouble or another vehicle fault. Do not treat the warning as a harmless reminder.
The shop says calibration is complete but provides no result
Ask which manufacturer procedure was used and request the scan or calibration record. If the shop cannot identify the required method or confirm a successful result, obtain a second evaluation from a facility with documented coverage for your vehicle.
Static calibration cannot be completed
Ask whether the vehicle’s prerequisites were met: level floor, correct target, measured setup, ride height, tire pressure, battery condition and absence of other faults. The technician should correct the failed condition and follow the manufacturer’s retry instructions rather than improvise.

Dynamic calibration will not complete
Ask which driving conditions are required and whether the route met them. Weather, lane markings, traffic and speed can prevent completion. The vehicle may need another attempt after the underlying issue is corrected.
The camera or bracket was damaged
Calibration cannot compensate for a bent, loose or incorrectly installed mount. The facility should inspect and correct the physical problem first, then repeat the manufacturer’s complete process. If the replacement windshield is not compatible with the camera system, replacing or correcting the glass may be necessary before aiming.
What one documented case does—and does not—show
An account filed in an NHTSA docket by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety describes a 2016 Honda Civic evaluation in which the camera mount was skewed and a clip was loose after windshield replacement; the account says recalibration resolved the observed issues (IIHS account in NHTSA docket NHTSA-2023-0021, attachment dated August 11, 2023). This is an individual case, not a failure rate or evidence that every replacement creates the same defect.
No general prevalence percentage establishes how often a camera is misaligned after windshield replacement. The practical lesson is to verify the mount and procedure on the individual vehicle, not to estimate risk from one example.

Follow the vehicle maker’s and repair facility’s instructions. If a required camera adjustment is incomplete, do not return the vehicle to normal use on the assumption that it will correct itself. The affected assistance features may be unavailable, limited or inaccurate even when the vehicle starts normally and no warning is visible. If you must move the vehicle for repair, ask the facility what limited movement is safe and which functions should not be relied upon.

Do not test an uncalibrated system by deliberately approaching another vehicle, crossing a lane line or relying on automatic braking. These features are driver assistance, not a substitute for attentive driving, and an incomplete calibration can make their status uncertain.
How much does recalibration cost?
There is no reliable universal price. The work can involve a scan, static targets, a dynamic drive, additional diagnosis or correction of a mounting problem, and requirements vary by vehicle and region. Request an itemized estimate that identifies the glass work, calibration method, any diagnostic repairs and the documentation supplied. A low quote that omits a required procedure is not a true comparison.
Ask whether the estimate covers a second attempt if the prescribed drive cannot complete because of weather or road conditions, and whether parts or bracket correction are excluded. Compare estimates by completed manufacturer requirements, not by the shortest advertised appointment or the lowest standalone calibration fee.

- Does the manufacturer require calibration after this windshield replacement?
- Is the procedure static, dynamic or both?
- Which manufacturer information and revision date did you use?
- Are your targets and scan tools approved or documented as equivalent for this vehicle?
- Did every required adjustment, automatic-learning step and post-repair scan pass?
- Can I have the calibration or scan report?
- Are any warning lights, codes or restricted functions still present?
- Was the camera bracket, clip and wiring inspected after the glass was installed?
- If a road drive was required, what conditions were met and was the drive completed successfully?
- Who should I contact if a warning returns after I leave?

Is a warning light proof that calibration is needed?
A warning can indicate incomplete calibration, a mounting or wiring problem, incompatible glass or another fault. It warrants diagnosis, but the absence of a warning does not prove that a required procedure was completed.
Can a regular repair shop do the work?
