1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart with fit and weather, then use ratings and reviews as separate clues. Confirm the vehicle’s required size, load index, speed rating and pressure. Choose a tire category that matches your climate. Only then compare wet and dry test results, snow or ice performance where relevant, measured wear, noise and comfort. A high number or star score in one category is never a complete quality grade, and no label promises a particular mileage for your driving.
What the numbers on a U.S. tire actually mean
Many passenger tires sold in the United States carry a Uniform Tire Quality Grading System (UTQG) marking with three separate ratings: treadwear, traction and temperature. They answer different questions and were not designed to produce one overall score.

Treadwear is a relative index, not a mileage warranty
NHTSA describes a grade-100 control tire for the treadwear comparison. A tire marked 200 is intended to wear twice as long as that control tire under the grading comparison. That does not mean it will last a fixed number of miles on your car. Climate, road surfaces, speed, cornering, inflation, alignment, rotation, vehicle weight and maintenance can all change actual wear.
Tire Rack’s UTQG explanation adds an important caution: treadwear numbers are most useful when comparing tires from the same manufacturer. Manufacturers conduct the grading in their own product lines, so a 600 from one brand is not a dependable mileage forecast against a 400 from another. Treat the number as a rough, within-brand indicator of relative durability, not as a cross-brand leaderboard.

For a better estimate of service life, find an independent test that reports measured tread life using a disclosed route and method. Then look for owner reports that state the vehicle, tire size, mileage, rotation schedule, inflation practice, alignment condition and driving environment. A review saying “lasted forever” without those details cannot be converted into a useful mileage expectation.
Traction grades describe wet straight-line stopping
UTQG traction grades run from AA, A, B and C. They concern wet-pavement stopping performance, not every kind of grip. NHTSA presents the grade as wet stopping capability. Tire Rack describes the underlying procedure more narrowly: a locked tire is tested for straight-line friction on a wet surface.
That procedure does not measure dry braking, cornering grip or resistance to aquaplaning. A tire with an AA traction grade can still differ substantially from another AA tire in steering response, dry handling or how it behaves in deep standing water. Use the grade as one wet-braking clue, then inspect independent tests for the conditions you actually face.

Temperature grades concern heat resistance
Temperature grades are A, B or C. They indicate resistance to heat generation and the ability to dissipate heat under the grading conditions. Heat management matters because sustained high speed, heavy loads, underinflation and hot weather increase stress. The grade does not tell you how quiet, comfortable, fuel-efficient or winter-capable the tire is.
What UTQG leaves out
- It is not a complete dry-grip or cornering score.
- It does not rate snow or ice traction.
- It does not provide a hydroplaning-resistance grade.
- It does not measure steering feel, ride comfort or cabin noise.
- It does not guarantee a mileage figure for your vehicle.
Those omissions are why a tire should be selected by use case rather than by the highest single letter or number.
How common are the U.S. grades?
NHTSA’s consumer data, accessed in 2026, show how concentrated some grades are among current tires. The agency does not state a publication date for these distributions, so treat them as an access-year snapshot rather than a permanent market rule.

| UTQG measure | Distribution reported by NHTSA | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Treadwear below 200 | 15% of current tires | A relatively low index; compare within the same manufacturer and category. |
| Treadwear 301–400 | 32% | A common range, not a mileage promise. |
| Treadwear above 600 | 2% | Unusually high relative index; still not proof of long life on your car. |
| Traction AA | 15% | Highest wet-stopping grade in the UTQG scale. |
| Traction A | 77% | The most common traction grade in the snapshot. |
| Traction B | 7% | Lower wet-stopping grade; investigate the intended application. |
| Traction C | Four tire lines | Rare in the reported current-tire set. |
NHTSA also reports 511 people died in tire-related road crashes in 2024. That figure is broad safety context; it does not establish that a particular UTQG grade predicts an individual tire’s crash risk. Correct fit, inflation, tread condition and appropriate driving remain essential.

Confirm fit before comparing any score
A test result is irrelevant if the tire is the wrong size or load capability for your vehicle. Read the owner’s manual and the Tire and Loading Information Label, usually on the driver’s doorjamb. Consumer Reports advises matching the original tire size and speed rating in most replacement situations. Also verify the required load index and whether the vehicle calls for a particular construction or seasonal category.
Record these specifications
- Size: Copy the complete alphanumeric designation, including the wheel diameter and any construction or vehicle-specific suffix.
- Load index: Confirm that each replacement tire can carry at least the vehicle manufacturer’s specified load.
- Speed rating: Match the original rating unless a qualified tire professional and the vehicle maker’s guidance support a different choice.
- Quantity and axle fit: Check whether the vehicle requires identical tires on an axle or all four positions, especially for all-wheel-drive systems.
- Pressure: Use the vehicle manufacturer’s placard or manual, not the maximum pressure molded on the tire sidewall.
NHTSA’s TireWise guidance states: "The correct pressure for your tire is what the vehicle manufacturer has listed, NOT what is listed on the tire itself." The sidewall value is a maximum operating limit for that tire, not the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure.
Choose the tire category for your weather and roads
NHTSA says category choice depends on location and typical weather. A technically excellent tire in the wrong category can be less safe than a less highly rated tire that suits the conditions.
| Category | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| All-season | Moderate climates with varied conditions and occasional light winter weather. | Not the strongest choice for sustained deep snow or severe ice. |
| Winter | Frequent snow, ice and prolonged cold temperatures. | May wear faster in warm conditions and can feel less responsive on dry roads. |
| Summer | Warm-weather driving where dry and wet-road handling is the priority. | Not designed for below-freezing temperatures, snow or ice. |
| All-terrain | A compromise for drivers who split time between paved roads and off-road surfaces. | On-road noise, efficiency and wet handling can differ from a road-focused tire. |
Do not infer winter capability from a high UTQG traction grade. Snow and ice performance require dedicated testing and, where applicable, the severe-snow symbol or severe-ice symbol used on European labels.

Tires covered by European Union rules use a different label from U.S. UTQG. The revised EU label took effect on 1 May 2021. It reports rolling resistance, wet grip and external rolling noise; covered products may also display severe-snow and severe-ice symbols.

| EU label field | Scale or symbol | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolling resistance | A–E | Relative resistance as the tire rolls, related to potential efficiency differences. | Your exact fuel or energy saving on a particular vehicle and route. |
| Wet grip | A–E | Wet-braking performance under the label’s method. | Dry handling, cornering feel or complete aquaplaning behavior. |
| External rolling noise | A–C plus a decibel value | Pass-by noise measured outside the vehicle. | The sound level heard inside your cabin. |
| Severe-snow or severe-ice symbol | Symbol where applicable | Indicates that the tire meets the relevant severe-condition requirements. | A complete ranking of winter handling in every vehicle and snow condition. |
The European Commission’s product database, EPREL, stores additional information accessible through the QR code on the label. Compare the actual tire dimension and test information, not just the letter. The EU classes are not interchangeable with UTQG letters or numbers.
The EU label also omits a mileage class. The European Commission says an appropriate method for reliable mileage information is still being developed. It does not rate comfort, steering feel or total wear life. The Commission describes tire properties as competing: reducing rolling resistance, maximizing wet grip, limiting noise and extending wear can involve trade-offs. The practical goal is a balanced result for your route, not the highest class in every box.
How to judge an independent tire test
Prefer comparisons that disclose enough detail to show whether the tires were tested fairly. Before looking at the ranking, check:
Recommended Free Tools
- The exact model, generation and tire size.
- The test date and the vehicle used.
- Surface type, weather and track conditions.
- Inflation pressure, load and any break-in procedure.
- Whether the test measured braking distance, handling, aquaplaning, noise, comfort, rolling resistance and wear.
- How many runs were made and how results were averaged, when the publisher explains it.
Tyre Reviews says its published disciplines vary by tire type: summer comparisons cover dry and wet conditions, while winter comparisons add snow and ice. Its comparison pages present controlled test data separately from owner reviews. That separation is useful because an instrumented braking distance and a driver’s impression of ride comfort are different kinds of evidence.
Read the individual dimensions, not only the final rank
A composite score reflects the publisher’s weighting. If wet braking counts heavily, a tire that excels there may outrank a quieter tire with better dry handling. Your priorities can produce a different rational choice. For a highway commuter, wet stopping and cabin noise may dominate. For a mountain resident, snow and ice results may matter more than a small efficiency advantage.
| Test dimension | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Wet braking | How far did the tire take to stop, and on what surface and temperature? |
| Wet handling | Was control consistent through corners, not just in a straight line? |
| Dry braking and handling | Does the tire remain predictable when roads are dry and warm? |
| Aquaplaning resistance | Was standing-water behavior measured separately from wet braking? |
| Snow and ice | Were these conditions tested for the season and category you are considering? |
| Wear | Was tread life measured over a disclosed distance and method? |
| Noise and comfort | Were measurements made inside the cabin, outside, or both? |
| Rolling resistance | Was efficiency measured under stated load, pressure and laboratory conditions? |
Use owner reviews for context, not as a laboratory score
Owner feedback can reveal qualities a short test cannot: persistent humming at highway speed, harsh impacts on broken pavement, difficulty balancing a particular size, rapid shoulder wear or good behavior after many seasons. It is most useful when the reviewer identifies details that let you judge similarity.

Give more weight to reviews that include
- The same vehicle generation and drivetrain.
- The exact tire size and load or speed version.
- A similar climate, altitude and road surface.
- Measured mileage and the date or season of installation.
- Rotation intervals, inflation checks and alignment history.
- Specific observations about wet braking, snow, noise, comfort or wear.
Look for repeated patterns across many detailed reviews rather than one-line star ratings. A complaint about noise may be meaningful when it recurs on the same vehicle and size; a single report may reflect an alignment problem, a damaged wheel or an unusual road surface.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison framework for two candidate tires
When two tires appear suitable, compare them in this order:
- Fitment: Eliminate any model that does not meet the vehicle’s specified size, load index, speed rating or drivetrain requirements.
- Category: Confirm that both are appropriate for your normal temperature, snow, ice and off-road exposure.
- Safety conditions: Compare wet braking and handling first; add dry, snow, ice and aquaplaning results according to your routes.
- Durability: Use disclosed tread-life testing and detailed mileage reports, not treadwear numbers alone.
- Daily livability: Compare cabin noise, ride comfort and steering response, noting whether the source measured inside or outside the vehicle.
- Efficiency and practicalities: Consider rolling resistance, local availability, warranty terms and installed cost after the performance requirements are met.
A simple worksheet can prevent a flashy number from deciding the purchase. Create columns for the two exact models and record the tested size, test conditions, wet and dry results, winter results where applicable, wear evidence, noise or comfort evidence and your confidence in each source. Mark any field as “not reported” rather than filling it with an assumption.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: treating treadwear as a promised service interval
Correction: Use it only as a relative clue, preferably within one manufacturer, and seek measured wear data tied to a method and your type of driving.
Mistake: assuming AA traction means superior grip everywhere
Correction: Remember that the UTQG procedure concerns wet straight-line stopping. Check dry, cornering, aquaplaning and winter tests separately.

Mistake: comparing U.S. and EU letters as if they were the same scale
Correction: Identify the market’s labeling system and compare the underlying dimension, tire size and test method.
Mistake: choosing the highest score before confirming fit
Correction: Start with the vehicle placard and manual. A tire that cannot meet the required size or load specification is not a candidate.
Mistake: using a summer tire in freezing weather
Correction: Select a category designed for your lowest typical temperatures and snow or ice exposure; summer tires are not designed for below-freezing conditions.
Mistake: accepting a composite ranking without reading its weighting
Correction: Inspect the individual disciplines and choose the trade-off that matches your actual roads.
Mistake: trusting a single owner complaint or praise
Correction: Seek a pattern from reviews with matching vehicle, size, climate and maintenance details.
A final pre-purchase checklist
- Have you copied the complete size from the vehicle placard or manual?
- Does the candidate meet the specified load index and speed rating?
- Is its category suitable for your usual temperatures, rain, snow, ice and off-road use?
- Did you read the actual wet and dry test results rather than only the overall rank?
- Did you check snow, ice or aquaplaning evidence when those conditions matter?
- Are tread-life claims tied to a disclosed test or detailed, comparable owner mileage?
- Did you distinguish exterior pass-by noise from cabin noise?
- Are the test size, vehicle, date, pressure, load and conditions comparable to yours?
- Will you set pressure to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation after installation?
The most defensible purchase is the tire that fits the vehicle, matches the weather and performs well in the specific conditions you drive—not necessarily the one with the largest treadwear number, highest star average or best composite rank.
