The oil should reach somewhere between the lower and upper marks. If it is below the lower mark, add only oil that meets your vehicle’s required specification, then check again.
How do I read the oil dipstick?
- Park on level ground. Secure the vehicle as its owner’s manual directs. A slope can affect where oil sits in the sump and make the reading unreliable.
- Prepare the engine as the manual specifies. Check whether your vehicle calls for a cold-engine reading or a warmed engine followed by a wait after shutdown. There is no single condition or wait time that applies to every vehicle.
- Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to remove the oil from the measuring end.
- Reinsert it fully. Push the dipstick all the way into its tube, then pull it out again to take the reading.
- Find where the oil film reaches the scale. The marks may be labeled MIN and MAX, L and F, or MINI and MAXI. If the dipstick has markings on both sides and the readings differ, Ford advises using the lower reading.
- Compare the level with the marked range. Oil between the lower and upper marks is within the indicated range. If it is below the lower mark, top up with oil meeting the vehicle’s specified grade and approval, then repeat the check. Add cautiously and do not exceed the upper mark.
Should I check engine oil hot or cold?
Use the procedure in the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle and engine. Some manuals call for warming the engine to normal operating temperature, switching it off, and waiting for oil to drain back before checking. Others allow a check before the engine is started or after warm-up and a stated wait.
For example, the cited Hyundai 2025 and hybrid 2024 manuals specify a 15-minute wait after shutting off a warmed engine. Ford’s cited manual permits checking before starting or after warm-up and a 15-minute wait. Renault/Dacia guidance says to check after the engine has been off for some time, with the detailed timing depending on the model. These examples illustrate why one manufacturer’s wait time should not be applied to another vehicle.
What do the dipstick marks mean?
The lower mark is the minimum indicated level and the upper mark is the maximum. The oil film should fall between them. Labels vary: a dipstick might use MIN/MAX, L/F, or MINI/MAXI. If the level is already within the marked range, Ford’s manual says not to add oil.

Do not assume that the space between marks represents the same amount of oil on every vehicle. Renault/Dacia manuals specify different capacities for different engines, so use your vehicle’s manual rather than estimating a universal top-up volume.
What should I do if the oil is below or above the marks?
If the oil is below the lower mark
Add oil only if it meets the grade and approval specified in the vehicle manual. Add a small amount at a time, allow it to settle as directed by the manual, and repeat the dipstick check. Stop once the level is within the marked range.

If the oil is above the upper mark
Do not add more oil. The manuals warn against exceeding the maximum mark. If the level is clearly above it, consult the vehicle manual or a qualified service professional for the appropriate correction rather than continuing to drive on an assumed reading.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do the checking conditions matter?
- Level ground: Oil can sit unevenly in the sump when the vehicle is parked on a slope.
- Engine off and drain-back time: Oil needs to return to the sump for a meaningful dipstick reading; the required wait depends on the vehicle.
- Wiping and reinserting: The first pull can leave oil along the dipstick. Wiping it clean and taking a second reading shows where the settled oil reaches the scale.
For additional examples of vehicle-specific procedures, see the Hyundai 2025 owner manual, Ford owner-manual guidance, Hyundai 2024 hybrid owner manual, and Renault/Dacia user-manual guidance. A separate 2012 International/Navistar maintenance bulletin hosted by NHTSA also advises checking on level ground, not while the engine is running or immediately after shutdown, and waiting five minutes; that is an application-specific example, not a passenger-car rule (NHTSA-hosted bulletin).
