How much horsepower did a Chevy 409 have?
There was no single horsepower rating for every 409. The rating depended on model year and configuration. General Motors’ description of a specific 1962 Bel Air identifies its 409 V8 as rated at 409 horsepower. Chevrolet’s revised January 1964 vehicle information kit lists three 409 options, with ratings from 340 to 425 horsepower.

The 1962 heritage entry says its Bel Air had solid lifters and a manual transmission, and describes it as capable of a 12.2-second quarter mile. What was the 409’s racing and cultural legacy?
The 409 became closely associated with drag racing, and NHRA’s retrospective connects the engine’s reputation with the Beach Boys’ song. The racing story also needs one important distinction: NHRA describes the 1963 drag-racing engine as a stroked 427-cubic-inch W engine. The first- and final-year figures in that tally are especially small. Chevrolet’s engine timeline places the start of the Mark IV generation in 1965. The enthusiast source says the 409 option ended around February of that year and was replaced by the 396; that specific phase-out timing comes from the secondary source, not a factory production record. How many 409 engines or cars survive today?
