Protect a Silverado Multi-Flex tailgate in two separate ways: protect its painted surface with a correctly fitted tailgate liner, and control the cargo from the bed so it cannot shift or strike the gate. Chevrolet’s molded Tailgate Liner with Mounting Tracks (GM part 84166958) is the directly relevant surface-protection accessory for Silverado 1500 Multi-Flex applications. It does not create a heavy-cargo rating for the tailgate. The 375 lb (170 kg) figure in the 2026 Silverado 1500 Owner Manual applies to using the tailgate as a step and includes the person and cargo; it is not a rating for cargo loaded onto the gate.
What “protecting the tailgate” actually involves
Heavy-cargo loading can damage a Multi-Flex tailgate in more than one way. Cargo can scratch the painted outer panel, dent or abrade the inner surface, press against the hinges, or move unexpectedly when the gate or step is being used. A liner addresses contact with the finish. It does not make an unsecured load safe, increase the gate’s carrying capacity, or replace the truck’s bed tie-down system.

The safest arrangement is to have the cargo supported by the bed floor and restrained to the designated bed tie-downs. Treat the tailgate as a closure and access system unless the owner manual gives a specific rating for the particular operation you are performing. The official materials reviewed for the Silverado Multi-Flex do not publish a general heavy-cargo rating for the primary or inner tailgate.

The 375 lb step rating is not a cargo rating
General Motors’ 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Owner Manual states: “When using the tailgate as a step, the load rating is 170 kg (375 lb), which includes a person and cargo. Overloading the tailgate step can cause damage to the tailgate system.” This number applies only to the step-use condition described by the manual. It includes the person standing on the step and anything being carried, so it cannot be converted into a permissible weight for freight resting on an open tailgate.

A load stop still requires restraint
The same manual warns: “When using the tailgate step as a load stop, the load must be secured as the load could shift.” A long board, pipe, sheet, or box that touches the step or inner gate is not secured merely because the gate is upright. Use an appropriate restraint attached to the bed’s rated tie-down points, and check the specific manual for your truck’s model year and configuration.
Bed tie-down ratings do not establish tailgate capacity
Chevrolet’s 2026 Silverado 1500 commercial feature page lists 12 standard bed tie-downs rated at 500 lb per corner. That specification belongs to the bed tie-down hardware, not the Multi-Flex tailgate. It also does not mean that every tie-down can safely receive 500 lb in every direction or that the tailgate can support an equivalent load. Follow the tie-down and cargo-restraint instructions for the truck, the restraint equipment, and the load.
Prepare the truck before loading
- Confirm the exact vehicle. Identify the model year, 1500 or HD series, bed length, receiver size, and Multi-Flex configuration. A 2026 Silverado 1500 manual should not silently be applied to every Silverado generation or to an HD truck.
- Inspect the gate. Look for loose hardware, cracked plastic, bent hinges, damaged step components, or debris that could concentrate pressure under the load. Do not load until a damaged mechanism has been assessed.
- Plan where the weight will sit. Keep dense cargo on the bed floor, supported over the bed rather than perched on the inner or outer tailgate. Check the truck’s payload information and the cargo manufacturer’s handling instructions separately.
- Choose restraints before lifting. Select straps, chains, blocks, or other equipment suitable for the load, and identify the bed tie-down points you will use. Do not improvise with the tailgate latch, step, trim, or mounting tracks.
- Protect contact surfaces. A liner, clean blocking material, and edge protection can prevent abrasion. Keep grit, metal chips, and sharp protrusions from being trapped between the cargo and painted panels.
Use the correct Multi-Flex tailgate liner
Chevrolet Tailgate Liner with Mounting Tracks
Chevrolet lists a custom-molded, ribbed Tailgate Liner with Mounting Tracks under GM part 84166958. The listing says it fits MultiPro or Multi-Flex tailgate models and helps prevent scratches and other damage to the painted tailgate surface. Its listed dimensions are 47.87 by 8.35 inches, and the listing says no drilling is required.

The cited fitment covers Silverado 1500 model years 2019 through 2026 and also lists the Silverado 1500 LTD for 2022. Confirm the exact year, bed, and tailgate configuration with Chevrolet before ordering: a similar-looking gate or a different Silverado series is not proof of compatibility.

What the liner can and cannot do
- It can: provide a molded barrier over the painted tailgate surface and reduce scratches and other finish damage from normal contact.
- It cannot: establish a maximum cargo weight, make an unsecured load safe, certify impact resistance, or protect hinges and mechanisms from overload.
- No quantified impact test is established here: Chevrolet’s stated function is surface protection. There is no cited independent impact rating or test result that supports assigning the liner a particular load or drop capacity.
Installation and fit check
- Verify that the part number and fitment match your truck before opening the package.
- Clean and dry the tailgate surface so grit cannot be sealed beneath the molded liner.
- Place the liner as directed by the manufacturer, align its edges and mounting-track features, and use only the supplied hardware or approved attachment method.
- Operate the primary and inner tailgate sections slowly. Confirm that the liner does not interfere with latches, hinges, cables, the step, or the tailgate’s normal closing position.
- After the first load, inspect the liner for movement, trapped debris, or rubbing. Correct any interference before carrying more cargo.
Load heavy cargo without making the tailgate carry it
- Open the bed and position the load on the floor. Place the heaviest portion as low and as far forward as practical while preserving the truck’s required weight distribution. Do not use an open gate as a shelf for a concentrated load.
- Use stable blocking. Blocks, dunnage, or edge guards should keep the cargo from rolling, sliding, or cutting into the liner. They should sit on the bed or other approved support, not on fragile tailgate trim.
- Center and balance the load. Avoid a single heavy item bearing on one corner of the gate. Distribute contact across the bed and keep the load within the bed’s physical boundaries whenever possible.
- Attach restraints to bed tie-downs. Route each restraint so it holds the cargo down and toward the truck, with no strap crossing a sharp edge or rubbing against a latch. The 500 lb-per-corner figure cited by Chevrolet describes the bed tie-down points; it does not authorize an equivalent force on the tailgate.
- Remove slack and protect the restraints. Tighten enough to prevent movement without crushing the cargo or overloading an attachment point. Add corner or edge protection where a strap contacts metal, timber, or a sharp package.
- Test before driving. Push and pull the load by hand, check that the restraints remain tight, and verify that nothing can contact the gate while turning, braking, or accelerating. Recheck after a short distance and whenever the load settles.
- Close and latch the tailgate when the load allows. A closed gate keeps the load inside the bed, but it is not a substitute for restraints. If the load must extend beyond the bed, use the truck’s appropriate load-stop arrangement and secure the extension as the manual requires.
- Keep people off the tailgate during cargo handling. If someone uses the step, stay within the manual’s step-use conditions and remember that the 375 lb total includes the person and cargo.
Using the primary or inner tailgate as a load stop
Silverado Multi-Flex equipment provides primary and inner tailgate load-stop functions for retaining long or second-tier items. Those features help position cargo, but they do not turn the gate into an independently rated platform. The owner manual’s explicit warning is that cargo used with the tailgate step as a load stop must be secured because it can shift.
For lumber, pipe, ladders, or similar long items, keep the majority of the weight on the bed, prevent rolling with suitable blocking, and restrain the item to bed tie-downs. Check clearance at the inner gate, outer gate, cab, and any accessory before moving the truck. If the item cannot be restrained without relying on the gate to carry its weight, change the loading method or use equipment designed for that cargo.
Prevent receiver-hitch interference
Opening the inner tailgate with a receiver hitch installed can create a separate risk: the gate may contact the hitch hardware. Chevrolet lists a CURT Multi-Flex protective hitch cap for this situation. Its stated purpose is to prevent opening the inner tailgate while the receiver hitch is in use; it is not a cushion for cargo impact and does not increase the tailgate’s load capacity.

Verify the part number, truck series, model year, and receiver size before installation. If a hitch is fitted, check clearance before operating either tailgate section rather than assuming the cap fits every receiver.

Tailgate liner versus bed liner
These are different purchases with different coverage. A bed liner protects the floor and sides of the cargo box; a tailgate liner covers the tailgate surface. Chevrolet’s cited short-bed bed-liner listing explicitly says that the tailgate cover is not included.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using 375 lb as the cargo limit
Why it fails: the figure is for step use and includes a person and cargo. Correction: treat it only as the manual’s step-use rating; do not use it to approve freight on the tailgate.
Relying on the load stop without a strap
Why it fails: the manual says cargo can shift when the tailgate step is used as a load stop. Correction: secure the item to bed tie-downs and test for movement before driving.
Applying the 500 lb tie-down figure to the gate

Buying only a bed liner
Why it fails: bed and tailgate surfaces are separate, and the cited short-bed listing says the tailgate cover is not included. Correction: select a Multi-Flex-compatible tailgate liner when gate-surface protection is the goal.
Forcing the inner gate against a hitch
Why it fails: receiver hardware can occupy the inner-gate path. Correction: check clearance first and use the correctly sized protective hitch cap when its stated interlock function matches your truck.
Assuming a liner makes overloading acceptable

Heavy boxes or machinery carried inside the bed
Install the exact-fit tailgate liner if painted-surface abrasion is a concern. Place the machinery on the bed floor, use stable blocking, and restrain it to the bed tie-downs. Keep the tailgate closed when dimensions permit; the liner does not change the truck’s payload or restraint requirements.

Long boards, pipe, or ladders extending beyond the bed
Use the appropriate primary or inner load-stop position only to retain the item while it is properly secured. Keep weight supported by the bed, prevent rolling, and inspect clearances around both gate sections. The manual’s load-stop warning means an item touching the gate still needs a restraint.
A receiver hitch is installed
Before opening the inner gate, identify the receiver size and confirm that the corresponding hitch cap fits the truck. The cap’s purpose is to prevent inner-gate opening during receiver use; it is not a general tailgate protector.
You are unsure which manual applies
Pause loading and obtain the owner manual for the exact model year, series, bed, and tailgate configuration. Do not transfer the 2026 Silverado 1500 step guidance to an HD model or an older generation without confirmation.

- Look for liner movement, trapped gravel, exposed paint, or rubbing at the edges.
- Check straps and attachment points for cuts, looseness, crushed packaging, or contact with a sharp edge.
- Confirm that both tailgate sections latch and that no restraint, block, or hitch accessory obstructs their travel.
- After the first short drive, stop and retighten or reposition the load if it has settled.
- Remove debris before closing the gate so grit is not pressed into the painted surface.
Bottom line
For heavy cargo, protect the Multi-Flex tailgate with the correctly fitted Chevrolet Tailgate Liner with Mounting Tracks, but protect the truck mechanically by keeping weight on the bed and securing it to the bed tie-downs. The 375 lb figure is a step-use limit that includes a person and cargo, not a heavy-cargo tailgate capacity. The 500 lb-per-corner specification applies to bed tie-downs, not the gate.
