Do not start a long-stored classic car until you know what you have, what has deteriorated, and whether its safety systems can work. Photograph and document the car first, preserve original evidence, move it into a dry sheltered environment, then inspect fuel, brakes, tires, chassis, suspension, wiring and fluids. Recommissioning is the work needed to make a car operate safely; restoration is a separate decision that may replace or refinish historic material.

The right plan depends on the exact make, model, year, storage history, materials and intended use. A car that fires after years of silence may still have failed brake hoses, contaminated fuel, unsafe tires, seized suspension or corroded structural parts.

Start with evidence, not a pressure washer

Before cleaning aggressively, dismantling anything or ordering replacement parts, establish the car’s identity and condition. Photograph every side, the engine bay, underside, interior, wheels, labels, serial numbers, trim, modifications and previous repairs. Record the date, where the car was stored, how long it sat, whether the building flooded or leaked, what symptoms were reported and which parts are believed to be original.

Keep loose components, old labels, fasteners and removed material together and identify where each came from. A layer of dirt, a non-factory bracket or an unusual repair may be evidence of the car’s working life. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) warns that careless restoration can erase historical information and advises specialist guidance when treatment is extensive.

Build a condition record

  • Write down the VIN or chassis number, engine and gearbox numbers, odometer reading and registration history where available.
  • Mark corrosion, dents, cracked glass, missing parts, water lines, rodent contamination and evidence of fire or accident damage on photographs.
  • Separate observed facts from assumptions. “Fuel smell at rear tank” is more useful than “fuel system bad.”
  • Save scans of manuals, invoices, inspection reports and photographs in at least two locations.

For an unusually original, rare or historically important car, consult an automotive historian or conservator before refinishing paint, replacing upholstery, rechroming trim or discarding altered parts.

Preservation, recommissioning and restoration are different jobs

These terms describe different goals. Preservation stabilizes existing material and keeps evidence intact. Recommissioning is the inspection, servicing and repair required to return a vehicle to controlled operation. Restoration may include rebuilding, replacing or refinishing parts to achieve a chosen historical or visual standard. A car can be preserved without being road-ready, or recommissioned while retaining worn original finishes.

Approach Primary goal Typical work Main trade-off
Preservation Retain material, patina and evidence Dry storage, corrosion control, gentle cleaning, stabilization and reversible protection Original defects and cosmetic wear remain
Recommissioning Make operation safe for display exercise or road use Inspecting and servicing fuel, brakes, tires, chassis, suspension, lubrication, wiring and controls Safety work can require replacing original components
Restoration Repair or recreate a defined condition or appearance Structural repairs, mechanical rebuilding, refinishing, retrimming and replacement of missing parts More cost, intervention and risk of losing historic fabric

Choose the scope after considering original material retained, intended use, storage history, reversibility, available documentation and specialist skill. A display-only car may need preservation and controlled exercise rather than a concours repaint. A car intended for regular road use needs safety work even if that means replacing aged hoses, tires or brake components.

Create a suitable long-term storage environment

Move the car into a clean, dry, sheltered and well-drained building whenever possible. The CCI identifies moisture, temperature, light, dust and pollutants as environmental factors and does not recommend outdoor storage for vehicle collections. Sunlight, rain, condensation and airborne salts accelerate damage to paint, metals, rubber, plastics, wood and upholstery.

Vehicles combine materials that respond differently to humidity. The CCI’s collection guidance uses relative humidity below 70% to limit rapid corrosion and, where complex wood or restrained leather is present, above 30%. Those figures are conservation guidance for mixed-material collections, not a universal garage prescription. Measure the actual building, improve drainage and ventilation, and ask a conservator about a car with extensive wood, leather or existing corrosion.

Keep water away

  • Repair roof and wall leaks before parking the car.
  • Keep the floor dry and well drained; avoid parking on wet soil or standing water.
  • Allow air circulation around the vehicle rather than sealing a damp car under an impermeable cover.
  • Use a breathable, vehicle-safe cover only after the car and building are dry and clean.
  • Reduce dust and chemical vapors from fertilizers, solvents, batteries and boilers.

Relieve static loads on tires and wheels

Years of weight in one position can flatten tires, distort rubber and stress vulnerable wheels. The CCI recommends suitable supports under axles or other load-bearing members for vehicles with wooden wheels or rubber tires, with wheels slightly off the ground; it also describes raising and rotating wheels when axle stands are not used. FIVA’s historic-vehicle guide likewise recommends axle stands for long-term storage. Use only lift points confirmed for your exact chassis and stands rated for the load. Never improvise under thin floor pan, suspension arms or fragile bodywork.

Where stands are unsuitable, follow the vehicle maker’s storage procedure for tire inflation, wheel rotation and movement. Inspect tires for age cracks, sidewall damage and flat spots before any driving; inflation pressure does not make an old tire safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery and floor protection

FIVA guidance recommends disconnecting the battery and placing an oil-absorbent mat beneath the vehicle during long storage. Adapt both recommendations to the battery type, wiring design and local fire rules. A disconnected battery can still leak or freeze, so store it on a stable, ventilated surface and inspect it periodically.

What to check before starting a car that has sat for years

Do not apply power merely because the engine looks complete. First identify hazards that can cause fire, mechanical damage or injury.

Initial inspection

  • Look underneath for oil, coolant, fuel or brake-fluid leaks and fresh wet spots.
  • Inspect wiring for rodent damage, brittle insulation, loose grounds, amateur splices and chewed hoses.
  • Check the air intake, exhaust, heater box, cowl and engine bay for nests, leaves and animal contamination.
  • Examine belts, hoses, fuel lines, brake lines, steel pipes, rubber mounts and steering components for cracking or corrosion.
  • Check that doors, hood latches, throttle linkages and emergency-brake mechanisms move without binding.
  • Inspect the chassis, suspension mounting points, floor and body structure for active corrosion or deformation.

Assess the fuel system first

Old gasoline changes chemically and can leave varnish, gum and corrosive deposits. A tank may be rusty, a hose may be soft or a carburetor or injector may be stuck. Do not add fresh fuel and crank an unknown system until you have checked the tank, lines, pump, filters, carburetor or injection components, filler neck and venting. Work in a ventilated area with ignition sources controlled and a suitable extinguisher available.

The article “Bringing It Back To Life” starts with fuel-system assessment for DeLorean cars and lists model-specific components. That sequence illustrates the hazard, but its parts and procedures are not universal. Use the factory workshop manual for your car or a qualified technician who knows its fuel system.

Check lubrication and fluid condition

Verify engine-oil level and condition before rotating the engine. Look for water contamination, severe sludge, metal particles and signs that a cylinder is hydraulically locked. Inspect coolant level, hoses and anti-corrosion protection; inspect gearbox, differential, steering and hydraulic reservoirs where fitted. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and neglected service can contribute to system failure. Do not flush an unknown or contaminated system blindly: identify the design, inspect seals and lines, then follow model-specific service instructions.

Inspect brakes, tires and controls

Assume the brakes need attention until proven otherwise. Check master-cylinder and wheel-cylinder condition, calipers, flexible hoses, steel lines, parking-brake cables, drums or discs and pad or shoe material. A firm pedal while stationary does not prove that the system will stop the car repeatedly. Tires can fail from age, ozone cracking or internal separation even with good tread. Confirm steering free play, suspension joints, wheel bearings and throttle return before any movement.

A safe recommissioning sequence

The following is a planning framework, not a substitute for the factory manual. Stop when a finding is outside your tools or experience, especially around fuel, brakes, high-current wiring, structural corrosion or seized components.

  1. Identify and document. Confirm make, model and year; record provenance, storage conditions, symptoms and visible damage. Photograph before cleaning or dismantling. Keep a parts and findings log.
  2. Inspect without applying power. Check for leaks, animal intrusion, damaged wiring, corrosion, compromised hoses and blocked intake or exhaust. Assess the fuel system before connecting a battery or attempting to run the engine.
  3. Make the engine safe to rotate. Follow the correct manual for lubrication, spark or injector isolation and hand rotation. Never force a seized engine; excessive force can damage historically important machinery and obscure the cause of seizure.
  4. Service safety-critical systems. Examine chassis and suspension, fuel delivery, brakes, tires, steering, wheel bearings and lubrication. Replace or rebuild parts according to condition and specification, not a generic parts list.
  5. Repair leaks and electrical faults. Secure grounds, protect wiring, install correct fuses and verify that pumps, fans, lights and charging circuits operate without overheating.
  6. Start under controlled conditions. Run the car outside, away from buildings and flammable materials, with a fire extinguisher and a way to shut off fuel or power. Monitor oil pressure, temperature, charging voltage, leaks, smoke and abnormal noise.
  7. Exercise at low risk. Revs Institute describes inspecting its cars, running them outside and making initial laps in a parking area before public-road use. That museum practice does not authorize driving an unregistered or uninspected car. Use private property only where lawful and safe.
  8. Test, repair and retest. Recheck brakes, steering, tire condition, fluid levels, fasteners and temperatures after the first heat cycle. Increase operating time gradually rather than treating one successful start as proof of reliability.
  9. Archive the work. Date photographs and notes; record fluids, measurements, replaced parts, suppliers, repairs, test results and unresolved defects. Keep removed original parts labeled and stored.

Revs Institute explains its inspection and exercise philosophy in Mechanical Preservation: How and Why We Exercise our Cars. Its checklist is a useful model for disciplined documentation, not a universal maintenance schedule.

Fuel, battery and fluid decisions during storage

Gasoline

Storage choices depend on tank material, fuel-system design, expected duration and local regulations. Options may include reducing fuel level, using a compatible stabilizer or draining the system for very long storage. Each has handling and corrosion trade-offs. A stabilizer cannot repair varnish or a rusting tank, and drained systems may still need protection against moisture. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions and label what was done.

Classic DeLorean Motor Company’s long-term-storage guidance discusses these alternatives for DeLorean vehicles and warns that fuel-system problems can remain after storage. Do not transfer its timing or quantities to another make.

Battery maintenance

Removing the battery is a common long-storage measure. A battery maintainer can be an option when its voltage, chemistry, wiring and fire protection are compatible. The DeLorean guidance specifically warns against a cheap trickle charger and describes risks from wiring and charging failures. Use a quality, correctly rated device with overcharge protection, inspect connections and follow the battery maker’s instructions; disconnecting the battery may be safer for an unknown electrical system.

Oil, coolant and brake fluid

Oil changes, coolant corrosion protection and brake-fluid service are vehicle-specific. The DeLorean storage material discusses all three because neglected fluids can damage components or leave a braking system unreliable. For another car, identify the fluid specification, inspect seals and contamination, and decide with the workshop manual or a specialist whether service should occur before storage, during recommissioning or after an initial inspection.

Intended use Static display or historical study Occasional exercise, tours or limited road use Defined show standard or a return to a documented earlier specification
Condition Stable corrosion and sound structure Usable structure with aged mechanical systems Structural failure, severe contamination or extensive missing components
Reversibility Drying, gentle cleaning and removable protection Bolted service parts and documented repairs Cutting, welding, refinishing or permanent material replacement
Expertise and resources Conservation knowledge and controlled storage Model-specific mechanical expertise Specialist body, trim, machining and historical research capability

Prefer reversible interventions where practical. Preserve a sample of original paint, upholstery, decals and fasteners before cleaning. If refinishing is necessary, record colors, layers and techniques first. The CCI advises that large machinery artifacts should be treated by mechanically skilled people with conservation training and appropriate historical resources.

Common problems after long storage

Symptom or finding Why it matters Safer response
Engine starts but car will not stop Brake fluid, seals, hoses, cylinders or calipers may be deteriorated Do not drive; inspect and rebuild the complete hydraulic and mechanical system
Strong fuel smell or wet fuel Leak or failed hose can ignite Shut down ignition sources, contain fuel safely and repair before testing
Engine will not turn Rust, seized accessories or fluid in a cylinder may cause major damage Investigate manually using the correct procedure; never use force or repeated starter operation
Flat-spotted or cracked tires Internal failure can occur without visible tread wear Replace with correctly specified tires before road use
Battery heats, smokes or repeatedly discharges Short circuits, wrong charger settings or battery failure are possible Disconnect power, inspect wiring and battery compatibility, and use protected charging equipment only
Active rust or damp upholstery Corrosion and mold can spread while hidden Improve the environment, document damage and obtain conservation or restoration advice

When professional help is the responsible choice

Use a qualified classic-car mechanic when the fuel system, braking system, high-current electrical system, structural chassis or suspension is uncertain. Use a conservator or historically informed restorer before irreversible work on a rare or original car. Specialist input is particularly important when parts are seized, corrosion is active, wood or restrained leather is present, or previous modifications are undocumented.

Ask a prospective specialist how they will document existing condition, protect original material, identify replacement parts, handle removed components and report findings. Agree on the intended use—display, occasional exercise or road driving—before approving work. The sources do not establish a universal restoration cost, timetable or failure rate; those figures depend on inspection findings and the specific vehicle.

Keep a permanent service and provenance file

A long-stored car may outlive its current owner. Make the next decision easier by maintaining a chronological file containing:

  • Before-and-after photographs with dates and locations.
  • Condition reports, measurements, fluid observations and corrosion maps.
  • Part numbers, sources, invoices, fabrication details and reasons for substitutions.
  • Battery, fuel and storage dates, including stabilizer or draining procedures.
  • Brake, tire, steering and suspension inspections.
  • Start-up data such as oil pressure, temperature, charging voltage, leaks and noises.
  • Test-route conditions, defects found and repairs completed.
  • Unresolved risks and the date they must be reassessed.

Careful indoor storage can preserve a vehicle for generations. The CCI states: “Under proper museum display and storage conditions indoors, vehicles can survive for generations.” Treat that as a conservation goal: control the environment, support the structure correctly, intervene deliberately and keep the evidence that explains every change.
