Before you leave cellular and Wi‑Fi coverage, verify that your exact phone, software version, purchase region and carrier support the satellite feature you intend to use. Install updates while you are still online, learn the phone’s connection assistant, and practice its alignment prompts. When you eventually need a connection, move outside to an area with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Satellite messaging is slower and less predictable than cellular service, so treat ordinary satellite messages and emergency SOS as different tools.
Apple’s current guidance covers iPhone satellite connections and Messages via satellite (Apple Support; Apple Support). Google documents Satellite SOS for supported Pixel phones (Google Pixel Phone Help).

Decide what you need the satellite feature to do
“Satellite messaging” can describe several functions. Identify the one you expect to use before checking compatibility, because support for one does not prove support for another.

| Personal messages | Sending a message when cellular and Wi‑Fi are unavailable. | On iPhone, Messages via satellite availability depends on the iPhone model, software, location, purchase region and, for SMS, carrier support. Apple directs users to Emergency SOS via satellite for emergencies. |
| Emergency SOS | Contacting emergency services when you cannot make a normal call. | It follows a separate emergency workflow. Google’s documented Pixel Satellite SOS is for emergency services, not a general personal-texting service. |
| Roadside assistance | Requesting help for a vehicle problem in an area without normal coverage. | Availability is feature- and region-specific. Confirm it on the manufacturer’s current support page before relying on it. |
| Location sharing | Sending your position to another person or service. | Support and privacy handling vary by feature. Do not assume that an emergency location share has the same behavior as a personal iMessage. |
The safest preparation is to plan for the exact scenario: a routine check-in, a roadside request, or an emergency. A routine message should never be your only emergency plan.

Check phone, software, region and carrier eligibility
Identify the exact model
Record the model name and where the phone was purchased. “iPhone” or “Pixel” is not specific enough: satellite capabilities are limited to supported generations and regional variants. Apple says iPhone 14 or later models support its satellite features, subject to country or region, purchase region and compatible software. Google’s Satellite SOS documentation applies only to supported Pixel phones. Confirm the current list on the relevant manufacturer page immediately before a remote trip.
Verify the country and purchase region
Satellite service can be unavailable even when the hardware appears compatible. Apple’s current support guidance says satellite connectivity is not offered on iPhones purchased in Armenia, Belarus, China mainland, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Russia. Phones purchased in Hong Kong and Macao have satellite connectivity only on iPhone 16e and later, according to that guidance. These rules can change; use Apple’s live availability information at support.apple.com/en-us/105097 rather than treating this list as permanent.
Check both where you will use the phone and the market in which it was sold. A phone bought abroad can have different feature eligibility from an apparently identical model bought locally.

Confirm carrier support for satellite SMS
Apple states that SMS via satellite requires carrier support. A compatible iPhone therefore does not automatically mean that ordinary SMS will work through satellite. Check your carrier’s current terms for your country, plan and SIM or eSIM. If the carrier is not listed as supporting the feature, do not count on satellite SMS for personal messages. This requirement is separate from the phone’s emergency SOS capability.
Check the Pixel requirement
Google says Google Messages must be the default messaging app for Pixel Satellite SOS. Changing the default messaging app disables Satellite SOS. Set Google Messages as default while you still have internet access, and confirm that the emergency option remains available in the phone’s settings.
Update the phone before leaving coverage
Install the latest compatible operating system while you have reliable cellular or Wi‑Fi service. Apple specifically recommends updating iOS before entering an area without cellular and Wi‑Fi coverage. Updates can add regional availability, correct connection problems or change the wording of the on-screen prompts.

Find Connection Assistant before you need it
On an eligible iPhone, locate the satellite Connection Assistant from Control Center or Settings while you are still connected. The assistant is designed to show how the phone indicates satellite direction and alignment. Familiarize yourself with the prompts, buttons and status messages; this prevents a first attempt from happening during an emergency.
Run the satellite demonstrations
Apple provides satellite demonstrations so you can rehearse the process. Run the relevant demo in an open place and follow the alignment instructions on screen. The Emergency SOS demo is for practice and does not call emergency services. Make sure every driver or passenger who may carry the phone knows that distinction.
The demonstration is not proof that a message will succeed at your destination. It teaches the interaction; actual performance depends on sky visibility, terrain, foliage, latitude, network availability and message conditions.
Learn the separate emergency route
Keep the path to Emergency SOS via satellite distinct from ordinary Messages. If someone is in immediate danger, use the phone’s dedicated emergency satellite feature and answer its questions as accurately as possible. Do not attempt to improvise an emergency request through a routine text thread when the emergency workflow is available.

- Install the latest compatible Android update while connected.
- Open the default-app settings and select Google Messages as the default messaging application.
- Review the Satellite SOS entry and its emergency instructions before travelling.
- Use any available on-device connection guidance to become familiar with the alignment process.
- Do not change the default messaging app after setup; Google says doing so disables Satellite SOS.
Google’s cited documentation describes Pixel Satellite SOS as a way to contact emergency services. It does not establish ordinary personal SMS availability through that feature, so do not advertise it to your travel group as a general off-grid texting service.

Plan for the physical connection conditions
Find an open view of the sky
Satellite signals need a usable view of the sky. Apple describes a clear view of the sky and horizon as ideal. Before trying to connect, leave the vehicle if it is safe, move away from buildings and steep terrain, and avoid standing beneath dense tree cover. Heavy foliage or other obstructions can prevent a connection altogether.
A car roof, windscreen frame, canyon wall or forest canopy can block part of the required view. The phone’s arrows and prompts are more useful in an open turnout, field or ridge than inside a parked vehicle. Never walk into traffic or an unsafe drop-off to improve reception.
Expect delays
Apple says sending can take 30 seconds or more under ideal conditions. Light or medium foliage, higher latitudes and other environmental or network conditions can extend the process to several minutes. Treat a progress indicator as an active connection attempt, not as a guarantee that the message will be delivered.
Keep the message simple
Message length is one factor that can affect connection time. Prepare concise text containing the essential facts: who needs help, what happened, your location, the number of people involved and any immediate hazard. A short status update is more practical than composing a long narrative while the phone is aligned with a satellite.
Use this workflow when you are actually out of coverage
- Confirm the ordinary network is unavailable. Satellite controls generally appear when the phone detects that cellular and Wi‑Fi cannot be used. Do not force a satellite attempt while a normal connection is available.
- Move to a safe open area. Stop the vehicle legally, remain clear of traffic and choose the best available view of the sky and horizon.
- Open the correct feature. Use Messages via satellite for an eligible routine message, or use Emergency SOS via satellite when there is an emergency. On a Pixel, use the documented Satellite SOS emergency flow.
- Follow the alignment arrows. Hold the phone as instructed and slowly adjust your position when the screen requests it. Keep the phone oriented until the transfer finishes.
- Wait for confirmation. A slow transfer is normal. If the attempt fails, move farther from obstructions and try again rather than repeatedly tapping send from the same blocked position.
- Read the status carefully. A drafted message, a message sent to the satellite network and a message delivered to its recipient are different states. Do not assume delivery without the phone’s confirmation.
- Escalate appropriately. If the situation is an emergency and the first attempt does not connect, follow the emergency feature’s instructions and seek another safe means of contacting help as soon as possible.
Prepare a vehicle-trip communication plan
Satellite capability belongs in a broader off-road communication plan. Before departure, tell a trusted person your route, intended stops and the time at which you will check in. Agree on what a missed check-in means and which emergency service should be contacted. This plan matters because satellite transmission can take minutes or fail under obstruction; it is not continuous tracking.
Write down the coordinates or route references you expect to use and keep essential information available without an internet connection. When a satellite message does connect, include a precise location and a short description of the road, trail or landmark. If your route crosses national borders, verify feature availability separately for each country.

- Compact SOS satellite communicator enables two-way text, photo and voice messaging even in areas with no cell coverage; requires active subscription (some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Connect with your compatible smartphone using the Garmin Messenger app to share your adventures with multiple contacts simultaneously; send text messages with up to 1,600 characters, share photos and send 30-second voice messages with friends and family
- Explore with peace of mind knowing you can trigger an interactive SOS message to Garmin Response℠, a 24/7-staffed international coordination center, to seek help in an emergency (active subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Check in with friends and family by using preset phrases that do not count against your monthly allotted text messages, or send custom messages when you have more to say
- Optimized inReach device messaging uses either Wi-Fi technology or the cellular connection of your smartphone then seamlessly switches to satellite technology when you go beyond cell service (active subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
No separate antenna or accessory is required by the Apple and Google setup guidance cited here. The phone itself still needs sufficient charge to complete a potentially long alignment and transfer, so begin the trip with the device charged and avoid using satellite as a substitute for normal trip preparation.

Know what can make a connection fail
| Symptom | Likely factor | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No satellite option appears | Unsupported model, outdated software, unavailable region, or a feature that is not offered by the carrier. | Reconnect to Wi‑Fi, update, check the exact model and purchase region, and verify carrier support for SMS. |
| The alignment keeps changing | Partial sky view, trees, buildings, terrain or movement. | Move to a wider, safer opening and follow the on-screen direction slowly. |
| The transfer is very slow | Foliage, higher latitude, network conditions or a longer message. | Wait several minutes in the best available position and shorten the message to essential information. |
| The message will not send under trees | Heavy foliage can block the connection. | Move into an open area; repeated attempts under the same canopy may not help. |
| Pixel Satellite SOS disappeared after an app change | Google Messages is no longer the default messaging app. | Restore Google Messages as the default and recheck Satellite SOS settings. |
Understand privacy and message routing
Privacy depends on the feature, not simply on the word “satellite.” Apple says iMessages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted between the sender’s and recipient’s devices. That is different from Emergency SOS handling.
Apple says Emergency SOS messages are encrypted in transit to Apple, then decrypted so they can be transferred to the appropriate emergency service or relay provider. Location information is shared with Apple and relay providers to route the request and assist responders. Do not describe every satellite message as having identical encryption or recipient handling.
Before a trip, decide what information is necessary to transmit. Include location and medical or hazard details when an emergency service needs them, but avoid adding unrelated personal information to a routine check-in.
Recheck availability immediately before departure
Device lists, carrier participation, software requirements and country rules can change. Apple identifies Globalstar and affiliates or other network providers in its satellite services, and availability varies by service and location. Google’s Pixel support page can likewise change as supported models and regions expand.
On the day before departure, repeat the following checks:
- Exact phone model and purchase region recorded.
- Latest compatible operating-system update installed.
- Correct country or region feature confirmed on the manufacturer’s current support page.
- Carrier support confirmed if ordinary SMS via satellite is required.
- iPhone Connection Assistant or satellite demo completed, or Pixel Satellite SOS reviewed.
- Google Messages still set as the Pixel default messaging app, if applicable.
- Emergency SOS route understood separately from routine messaging.
- Route includes safe places where you could obtain an unobstructed sky view.
These checks turn satellite messaging from an assumed feature into a verified contingency. The phone may still take 30 seconds or several minutes to transmit, and no satellite service should be treated as guaranteed coverage.
