Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not assume a normal factory EV can use a wireless-charging road. Dynamic wireless power transfer requires a receiver coil matched to the roadway system, and access may be limited to authorized project vehicles. Before driving onto one, identify the exact road segment and operator, verify that your make, model and year are supported, confirm that an approved receiver is installed or available, and keep a conventional charging plan until both the vehicle and the road are cleared for your trip.
What a wireless-charging road actually does
A dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) road places transmitter coils beneath the pavement. A receiver coil mounted on the underside of a vehicle couples with the road’s magnetic field and converts the transferred energy for vehicle use. The system is designed primarily to supply propulsion power; the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) also describes battery charging as a possible use.

This is different from an ordinary plug-in charger. A charging cable, portable charging unit or home wall box cannot make a vehicle communicate with embedded roadway coils. The vehicle needs hardware that is compatible with the particular road system, along with whatever authorization or operating procedure that system requires.
Dynamic charging while moving
In dynamic operation, energized roadway sections transfer power as an equipped vehicle drives over them. The length of the energized section, vehicle position, speed range, receiver design and control system all affect the result. A published peak power number therefore describes a project’s tested conditions, not a guaranteed rate for every car.

Stationary wireless charging
Some projects may also demonstrate wireless transfer while a vehicle is stopped. Ask the operator whether the location supports charging while parked, charging while moving, or both. Do not plan a trip around one mode if the road operator has not confirmed the other.
Four checks that determine whether your EV can use the road
1. The exact road segment and operator
“A wireless-charging road” is not a single national standard. Start with the named segment, its operator and its current project status. Ask:
- Is this section open to the public, or only to a research, fleet or demonstration program?
- Does a driver need authorization, registration, an approved vehicle list or an escort?
- Which lanes and directions contain active coils?
- Is charging dynamic, stationary, or both?
- Are there operating dates, hours, closures or speed requirements?
The documented projects use different road layouts and control arrangements. Michigan’s project description, for example, says authorized vehicles can trigger roadway segments. That is a project-specific operating method, not proof that every driver can activate a public lane.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Your vehicle’s make, model and model year
Give both the automaker and the road operator the exact vehicle identification details. “Electric SUV” or “the same model as the test car” is not enough. Ask whether your make, model, model year, battery configuration and drive configuration are on the supported list.
The receiver is the decisive component. The official examples reviewed involve receiver-equipped test or project vehicles, including a Class 8 truck in Indiana, four prototype vehicles on the A10 motorway pilot near Paris, and dedicated demonstration vehicles elsewhere. Those examples do not establish that a conventional consumer EV includes the necessary receiver from the factory.

3. Receiver installation
Ask whether a compatible receiver is already installed, can be fitted by an authorized provider, or is unavailable for your vehicle. The sources do not establish a universal retrofit kit, a general consumer installation network or a standard price.
Do not buy a generic wireless phone pad, home charging accessory or replacement charging cable expecting it to work with a roadway. A road-specific receiver, its control electronics and the operator’s communications requirements must be approved as a system.

4. Access and operating authorization
Even a vehicle with a receiver may not be allowed onto the active section. Obtain the operator’s instructions in writing where possible. Confirm how the vehicle is recognized, whether an account or permit is required, and what to do if the system does not activate. If the operator cannot confirm public access for your vehicle, treat the road as unavailable for trip planning.
Step-by-step preparation before you set out
- Map the precise segment. Record the road name, direction, entry and exit points, operator and any project name. A broad regional description is insufficient because only part of a route may be equipped.
- Contact the operator. Ask about public access, authorization, active dates, charging mode, lane placement, speed rules and vehicle-recognition requirements. Ask whether the system is operating on the date and time of your trip.
- Contact the automaker or an authorized service provider. Provide the make, model, year and vehicle identification number if requested. Ask whether the vehicle is approved for that road’s receiver and control system.
- Verify the receiver physically and on paper. Confirm where it is installed, who installed it and whether the operator recognizes that exact hardware. If no approved receiver is installed, do not assume a retrofit exists.
- Clarify the operating mode. Confirm whether energy transfer occurs while moving, while stopped, or in both situations. Ask whether the system supplies propulsion power, battery charging, or both for your vehicle class.
- Get the access procedure. Save the permit, registration confirmation, lane instructions, contact number and emergency procedure. A project may require an authorized vehicle to trigger an energized segment rather than relying on a general public signal.
- Build a conventional charging route. Locate ordinary charging options before and after the wireless section. Base the plan on your vehicle’s normal usable range and the confirmed availability of those chargers, not on a project’s maximum laboratory or field-test figure.
- Reconfirm immediately before departure. Pilot status, lane availability and authorization can change. If the operator or automaker cannot reconfirm access, use the conventional route plan and do not rely on roadway power.
What the documented projects show
Published results demonstrate that roadway charging can transfer substantial power under defined test conditions. They do not provide a market-wide specification for ordinary consumer EVs.
| Project or source | Vehicle and equipment | Reported result | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indiana DWPT testbed, Purdue University Joint Transportation Research Program report (2026), with INDOT and FHWA involvement | Receiver-equipped Class 8 truck; 85 transmitter coils embedded 2.4 inches beneath existing pavement | 50–190 kW at speeds up to 65 mph, with efficiency approaching 85% | It is not a typical passenger-car result, a universal road design or a guarantee for another vehicle. |
| A10 motorway pilot near Paris, VINCI page (undated, accessed October 13, 2026) | Four prototype vehicles fitted with pickup coils | More than 300 kW instantaneous and more than 200 kW average under optimal steady-state conditions | It does not describe ordinary public access, every vehicle model or performance outside those conditions. |
| Michigan wireless in-road charging project, Michigan Department of Transportation | Receiver-equipped project vehicles; authorized vehicles can trigger roadway segments | Project-specific operation and vehicle integration are described | No universal consumer authorization, retrofit program or open access is established. |
| Earlier dedicated test track documented by Stellantis | Receiver-equipped demonstration vehicle on a purpose-built track | Wireless transfer was demonstrated in a controlled project setting | The demonstration does not establish that a production EV can use a public road system. |
The Indiana figures are especially easy to misread. The 50–190 kW range and 65-mph speed ceiling belong to a receiver-equipped heavy truck on that testbed. The A10 figures are explicitly optimal steady-state results from four prototypes. Neither figure should be converted into an expected charging rate for your car.

How to compare two wireless-charging roads
If your route offers more than one candidate system, compare the practical conditions rather than ranking roads by peak kilowatts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Comparison question | Evidence to request | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle compatibility | Supported make, model and year; approved receiver part and installation status | A road can be energized yet unusable by a vehicle without the matching receiver and controls. |
| Public access | Open-to-public statement, permit process, operating dates and lane restrictions | A testbed or fleet lane may not accept an independently operated car. |
| Charging mode | Moving, parked or both; activation and speed requirements | Dynamic and stationary systems serve different trip plans. |
| Measured performance | Vehicle type, speed, efficiency, power definition and test conditions | Instantaneous, average and vehicle-specific figures are not interchangeable. |
| Fallback options | Conventional chargers near each entry, exit and detour | A pilot may be offline or unavailable even after you arrive. |
Mark a road “usable” only when all five categories are confirmed. A high-power demonstration with no public authorization is less useful for a private trip than a lower-power segment that explicitly supports your vehicle and route.
Questions to ask about a receiver retrofit
Because no general consumer retrofit standard is established, ask the automaker and operator the same specific questions:
- Is an approved receiver available for this exact make, model and year?
- Must installation be performed by the automaker, a named authorized provider or the road operator?
- Will the installed hardware be recognized by the roadway control system?
- Does installation change the vehicle’s warranty, service schedule or certification?
- Is the receiver permanently installed, removable or limited to a project vehicle?
- What happens if the receiver is present but the road does not authorize the vehicle?
- Are there documented limits on vehicle speed, lane position or operating conditions?
Do not modify the underside of the vehicle based on an internet diagram or a generic wireless-power product. The project sources describe fitted prototype and test vehicles, not a universal do-it-yourself installation path.
Keep a normal charging plan
Your fallback plan should work without the wireless section. Identify conventional charging locations, allow for a detour if the pilot lane is closed, and leave enough energy to reach the next confirmed charger without assuming that roadway transfer will occur.

Do not subtract a fixed number of miles from your trip estimate because a project reports a certain power level. Actual energy delivered depends on whether your vehicle is supported, whether the lane is active, how long the vehicle remains over energized coils and the project’s operating conditions. The available evidence does not provide a market-wide consumer charging rate.
If the operator says the road is active but your vehicle is not recognized, exit according to the operator’s instructions and use the conventional plan. Never stop or change lanes in a way that conflicts with posted road rules simply to improve coil alignment.

The published power is lower on your trip
Check the conditions attached to the number: vehicle type, speed, average versus instantaneous measurement and whether the result was described as optimal steady state. Use the ordinary charging plan rather than treating a lower result as a system failure.
The segment is temporarily unavailable
Follow the operator’s closure or detour instructions and use a conventional charger. Pilot status and access can change independently of your vehicle’s hardware.
Cost, signup and availability
No project source reviewed establishes a standard consumer price, universal signup process or generally available receiver product. That means a driver should not budget for a specific installation fee or assume that a retail accessory will provide access.
