A MINI Countryman can be prepared for a rally only after you identify its model year, trim, drivetrain, market and the event’s current rulebook. Those details determine what the car is designed to tolerate, which tires and wheels fit, what modifications are legal and what safety equipment is mandatory. Do not treat a standard Countryman as rally-ready simply because it has ALL4 all-wheel drive.
For example, the 2015 owner’s manual explicitly warns, “Do not drive on unpaved terrain, as otherwise the vehicle may be damaged.” That warning applies to the vehicle covered by that manual, not automatically to every Countryman. Use the correct manual for your car, then build a conservative plan around the organizer’s inspection and safety requirements.

Start with the exact Countryman and the exact rally

- Trim or special edition, including the exact ALL4 configuration if fitted.
- Engine, transmission and factory wheel-and-tire specification.
- Country or market of registration.
- The rally’s name, surface, distance, dates and organizing authority.
- Whether the car is entering a competition class, a regularity event, a navigation rally or a noncompetitive off-road tour.
Download the manual for your vehicle from the manufacturer’s owner-information resources, rather than applying figures from an older manual. MINI Canada provides a Countryman manual entry point at MINI Canada’s owner’s-manual page. A manual for a different year or market may contain different warnings, dimensions or operating limits.

Next, obtain the event’s current rulebook and technical bulletins directly from the organizer. No single set of rally requirements can be assumed here because the event and jurisdiction have not been specified. Ask the organizer to confirm the rules for safety equipment, allowed suspension and tire changes, underbody protection, lighting, noise, emissions, vehicle inspection, navigation equipment, communications and recovery procedures.
Make a one-page vehicle and event brief
Put the vehicle identity and event requirements on one sheet. Include the vehicle identification number, current odometer reading, factory tire size, wheel diameter, curb-weight information from the correct documents, driver and co-driver details, service contacts and scrutineering deadlines. Add a column for every proposed change and mark it as “permitted,” “requires approval” or “not yet confirmed.” Do not order a part while a rule or fitment question remains unresolved.
Know the limits before planning modifications
The available 2015 MINI Countryman/Paceman owner’s manual gives two figures that are useful for understanding the risk of assuming an ordinary Countryman is an off-road vehicle:

The manual’s exact wording is: “Do not drive on unpaved terrain, as otherwise the vehicle may be damaged.” Read the complete manual for the relevant model and year at the 2015 MINI Countryman manual. A rally organizer may permit an entry that the manufacturer does not recommend for ordinary use, but event permission does not erase mechanical, warranty, insurance or legal consequences.
Use the 2027 Untamed Edition as context, not a retrofit recipe
BMW Group’s October 2026 announcement for the U.S. 2027 MINI Countryman Untamed Edition describes a factory package with specially developed all-terrain tires and a suspension lift. The lift increases ground clearance by up to 19 mm, depending on powertrain and market. The announcement also says that ABS, DSC and steering were specially calibrated for the revised suspension and tire combination. Those facts show that tire and suspension changes can require coordinated chassis and software work; they do not establish a safe aftermarket recipe for another Countryman.

Use the BMW Group announcement only to understand what the factory changed on that edition. It is not evidence that fitting a lift kit, larger tire or all-terrain tread to another Countryman will preserve handling, braking, electronic-control behavior or reliability.
Build a rule-compliant preparation plan
1. Get written answers from the organizer
Send the scrutineer or clerk of the course a complete description of the car and planned changes. Ask for written confirmation of:

- Whether the Countryman is eligible for the chosen class and surface.
- Permitted tire construction, tread category, speed and load ratings, wheel sizes and studded-tire rules.
- Suspension lifts, spacers, spring changes, dampers and required fender coverage.
- Underbody guards, tow points, recovery straps, lighting, communication devices and fire-safety equipment.
- Seat, harness, helmet, clothing, medical, identification and extinguisher requirements.
- Navigation rules, road-book format, GPS restrictions, odometer requirements and co-driver equipment.
- Noise, emissions, road-registration and insurance requirements for the event’s jurisdiction.
- Inspection dates, documentation, weighing, sealing or post-event checks.
Do not convert a general internet checklist into an event specification. The applicable rulebook and organizer’s current interpretation control.
2. Establish a mechanical baseline
Have a technician familiar with the exact Countryman inspect the car before modifications. Record existing faults and obtain written measurements where useful. The inspection should cover the engine and cooling system, transmission, ALL4 system if fitted, driveshafts, CV joints, wheel bearings, steering, suspension mounts, brakes, exhaust, fuel and electrical systems, body mounts, doors, underbody and factory recovery points.
Replace worn components before adding equipment. A rally exposes weaknesses that a commuter may never reveal; reinforcing or adding weight around a failing component does not solve the underlying problem. Scan for stored diagnostic faults, verify that warning lights are absent and check for fluid leaks after a road test.

3. Select tires only after fitment and rules are confirmed
“All-terrain” is a useful search category because MINI documents that category for the Untamed Edition, but the category name does not identify a correct tire for your Countryman. Confirm the exact tire size, load index, speed rating, wheel width, offset, clearance at full steering lock and clearance through full suspension travel. Check whether the tire remains legal under the event rules and local road regulations.
When those checks are complete, you can shop for all-terrain tires for a MINI Countryman or ask a tire professional to check tire fitment for your Countryman. Do not treat a generic listing as compatible merely because it uses the Countryman name or says “ALL4.” Have the proposed wheel-and-tire combination test-fitted, including the spare, before the event.
Balance and torque the wheels to the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure. Recheck torque after the first heat cycle and after any wheel removal, following the manual and shop guidance. Carry only a spare and repair equipment that the event permits and that physically fits the modified wheel well.
4. Decide whether suspension changes are justified
More clearance can reduce contact with obstacles, but a lift also changes suspension geometry, alignment, center of gravity, driveshaft angles and the relationship between the tire and body. The 2027 Untamed Edition’s factory calibration demonstrates why a suspension-and-tire package cannot be reduced to a spring or spacer purchase.
If the rulebook allows a lift, require the installer to document the parts, alignment settings, fastener torque and post-installation inspection. Verify that brake hoses, wiring, sensors, bump stops and steering components remain correctly routed. Test for tire contact at full lock and full compression. Recalibrate or diagnose electronic systems according to the exact vehicle’s service information; do not assume warning lights or stability-control behavior will remain unchanged.

5. Protect vulnerable components without exceeding the rules
Ask the organizer whether sump guards, transmission protection, differential protection, fuel-tank shields, mud flaps and rocker protection are allowed. Any guard should be securely mounted, serviceable and clear of cooling airflow, drainage points, jacking locations and factory inspection access. Added protection increases mass, so account for it when checking axle loads, tire ratings and clearance under the actual rally load.
6. Prepare brakes, cooling and fluids for repeated loads
Start with fresh, correctly specified fluids and a documented service history. Inspect pad thickness, disc condition, caliper operation, hoses and parking-brake function. Confirm that the cooling system is clean, leak-free and able to maintain temperature during low-speed work and high-load running. Do not install a higher-capacity cooler, fan or fluid without checking compatibility, mounting and rule compliance for the exact car.
After each test session, inspect for overheated fluids, damaged lines, loose fasteners, cracked mounts and new noises. A temperature or pressure warning is a reason to stop and diagnose, not to continue until the finish.
7. Plan recovery and load management
Recovery equipment must match the vehicle’s approved attachment points and the event’s procedures. Confirm the location and rating of tow points with the correct manual or service information. Ask the organizer what recovery straps, shackles, winches, traction aids or communication equipment are permitted. Never attach a recovery device to an unverified suspension, bumper or plastic trim component.
Secure every tool, spare, jack, compressor, water container and safety item so it cannot become a projectile. Keep heavy items low and close to the vehicle’s center, while staying within the manufacturer’s load limits and the event’s class rules. Recheck tire pressures and vehicle mass with the actual rally load, not an empty-car assumption.

8. Protect the occupants and prepare the crew
Follow the event rulebook for seats, harnesses, helmets, clothing, fire protection, medical supplies and identification. A restraint or protective device must be compatible with the seat, mounting structure and the organizer’s inspection requirements; do not improvise attachment points. Train the driver and co-driver to use the navigation system, communicate hazards, perform a controlled stop and respond to a vehicle fire or injury.
Practice entering and exiting with helmets and equipment, securing the cabin after a puncture and checking the car without standing in a dangerous location. The best mechanical preparation cannot compensate for an untrained crew or unsecured equipment.

Use progressively harder tests on private property where permitted. Begin with ordinary-road checks, then use a controlled gravel or dirt area only when the owner’s manual, landowner and event rules allow it. Keep speeds low while checking steering response, braking, tire clearance, warning lights, underbody contact and stability-control behavior.
- Photograph the car and record tire pressures, wheel torque, fluid levels and diagnostic status.
- Drive a short shakedown route with the full crew, spare and equipment load.
- Stop and inspect wheel nuts, tires, suspension, guards, fluids, wiring and recovery points.
- Repeat at a modestly higher workload only after correcting every fault.
- Perform a final service, then document parts, settings and spares for the event.
Do not use public roads or private land in a way that violates local law, insurance conditions or the property owner’s permission. A test that damages the car before the rally is useful only if it reveals a problem safely and early.

A practical decision sequence
Use this sequence to decide whether to proceed:
- Identify: Confirm year, trim, drivetrain, market, manual and factory wheel-and-tire specification.
- Qualify: Confirm that the event accepts the vehicle and define the class, surface and jurisdiction.
- Inspect: Establish a documented mechanical baseline and repair existing faults.
- Approve: Submit proposed tires, suspension, protection, safety and navigation equipment to the organizer.
- Fit: Install only parts that are compatible with the exact car and approved in writing where required.
- Validate: Test the complete loaded vehicle, inspect it between runs and correct faults.
- Recheck: Complete the organizer’s inspection with the required documents, spares and safety equipment.
What information is still needed for a model-specific checklist?
A precise preparation list cannot be completed without the Countryman’s model year, trim, drivetrain and market, plus the rally’s rulebook and location. Those inputs determine tire fitment, permissible modifications, mandatory occupant protection, inspection procedures and recovery requirements. Provide them to a qualified technician and the event organizer before turning this general plan into a parts list.
Final go/no-go decision
Proceed only when the exact Countryman is mechanically sound, the proposed changes fit and remain legal, the loaded vehicle has been tested in a controlled setting and the organizer has confirmed eligibility and safety requirements. If any of those conditions is unresolved—especially the manual’s off-road warning, tire fitment, suspension changes or mandatory equipment—the responsible decision is to stop, obtain the missing information and revise the plan rather than treating a standard Countryman as rally-ready.
